It is a vegetarian spot, so not many would eat, a lot of people came in to order takeout, I decided to sit and ordered the bun Bo hue and it was good, the flavor lacked a little but it was fine. But it's the only kind of BBH that will not hurt my stomach. Service was good and food came out to order. It's a Vietnamese restaurant so they won't be as attentive but if you raise your arm and ask, someone will come. Stopped by this place with my husband, and right when we walked in the energy felt very clean and calming--almost like temple vibes. From the moment I stepped in, I had a feeling it was going to be a good experience. When you walk in, there's a food display in the front with windows where you can see what's being prepared. Once you're ready, you order at the counter and the staff member takes your order. I ordered the banh canh, and I must say it was very comforting. The flavor reminded me of something someone's grandma would make. It had such a homey feel, and every bite was really enjoyable. My husband ordered the bun rieu. He said the food was decent, but one thing he would critique is that the broth was a bit sweeter than expected. Usually bun rieu leans more toward the savory and slightly salty side, but here the broth was more on the sweet side, which he wasn't the biggest fan of. Overall, the service was excellent and the ambiance inside had a very clean, welcoming energy. We'll definitely be coming back to try more items on the menu. I hardly eat vegan food but if I will, it will definitely on the first day of Tet - Lunar New Year. This year, me and my mom went to DiLac for our family tradition, I saw a lot of great review and convinced her to check it out with me. The store is more spacious and brighter than I expected, surprisingly not a lot of people dine-in but they do have customer come in and out picking up to-go order quite often. I think the menu was simplified, it was a double-sided piece of paper and have likes total of 20-30 items, which I likes because it help with my indecisiveness. Staff and service was friendly during my visit, our food came out quite fast, under 10 minutes. We ordered the Com Tam Chay (Vegan Broken Rice) and Bun Bo Hue Chay (Vegan Spicy Beef Noodle Soup). Everything tasted delicious, the Com Tam have 3 different toppings, I prefer the Bi and Suon Nuong the most, Cha was okay, but their vegan fish sauce was giving me doubt because it taste soooo close to the real fish sauce, it was amazing and I love that they used real broken rice instead of regular white rice! Also came with a small size of soups as well but I forgot to tell them no cilantro so I only sip on it a little bit, it was good. I also tried my mom's Bun Bo Hue and really likes it, mom said she prefers her have more vegetables instead of vegan ham but we both agree the broth was tasty. Price wise, it was actually cheaper than a few other vegan that I went in the past and their portion was decent. DiLac also have a deli section if you want to grab some entrees or sides to-go, my mom have her eyes on their stir-fried chow mein, she probably will go back to grab some of that in the near future. There is a lot of parking in the plaza. They do prefer crash or you pay 3% extra for card. Overall, it was a pleasant experience for my first vegan meal of the year at DiLac. read more

As a tofu and vegetarian food lover, I really enjoy coming to DiLac! The prices are reasonable and I usually come here to get a takeout lunch. My favorite is the tofu dish that sort of looks like chicken/meat. I'm not really sure what it's called, but it's two dollars extra if you order it with a box. The texture is sort of like bean curd and mixing it so that the sauce combines with rice is so flavorful. The lemongrass tofu is very good as well with a strong lemongrass flavor. I've ordered the chow mein before as a side, but it's a little bit bland. The staff here mostly speak Vietnamese so it's a little hard to communicate sometimes, but I usually just get by with pointing to what I'd like. They're all very nice and patient though. read more

Upon returning to this restaurant, the extremely nice and friendly Owner or manager that was there was not working that day. Instead, it was a younger man who was not very kind or friendly. And brought me a plate of shaken beef. With about seven pieces of beef on it. I asked him why there is such a little beef on it and he said because I ordered rice and it cost about $2.50 more. But instead of charging me $2.50 they just shorted me meat on my plate. I couldn't believe it. It was a really bad experience upon returning. I think they should fire this guy. We ordered Sweet Basil Eggplant (3.5/5) this was the best dish we had. After a long bike ride with some buddies up Mt Hamilton, carbs were the only thing on our mind. Since one of our friends is vegan, we settled on Dilac Vegetarian Cuisine to make sure everyone had plenty of options. Initially, I was a little skeptical because I've had vegetarian noodle soups, and it didn't seem possible to replace the flavors of slow cooked bone broth and fish sauce. Nevertheless, I still wanted to give the vegetarian bun bo hue a try. Honestly, I was shocked by how good it was! I'm not really sure how they accomplish the savory flavor without any pork trotters or bones, but I thought it was just as good as the meat version. I didn't mind the veggie meat at all and the texture is pretty close to Vietnamese ham and fish cakes - only thing I really missed were the cubes of pig blood usually present in my dish. I did taste my friend's pho, which was a little sweet for my taste, so I'd probably recommend sticking to the bun bo hue if you can handle a little spice. They have 3 base teas. Jasmine,black and earl gray. I came in around lunch time and they were out of earl gray. I was a bit disappointed. So I posted for the jasmine tea. They have combos that include Oreo cookies and fruit loops cereal. I find that a bit odd and could get soggy. I just got the jasmine tea with regular brown boba. Unfortunately the boba was not that fresh. The outside was chewy but the inside of the boba was a bit hard. A little disappointed in their boba. Hopefully the iced coffee is better. read more

There are a ton of vegan/vegetarian Vietnamese restaurants in San Jose and this is certainly a standout. Although further away from folks coming from the rest of the Bay, it is worth a trip for the food, service, and prices. When looking at the menu, I noticed some items had a small symbol indicating 'vegan' so I asked to make sure with our server. She explained that everything on the menu is now vegan friendly since they've switched over their mock meat supplier which I assume used to be vegetarian. Great news! We started with their fresh Spring Rolls - a set of three sliced in half. I thought these were decent but nothing exciting. I felt it lacked mint or avocado to really kick it up and the mock meat inside was a bit bland. Pass on this in the future. However, the main entrees here were phenomenal. The Lotus Salad was fresh, crunchy, tangy, and came with vegan shrimp chips. They provided a vegan pineapple dressing but we really didn't need it as the small amount of sauce in the salad went a long way. Their Bun Bo Hue was also very fragrant - wonderful vegetable broth with noodles, tofu, mock meats, and some veggies. The real winner here was their Broken Rice dish which was fantastic. All of the pork substitutes were well seasoned and it brought me back to the flavor and somewhat textures I remember from consuming meat. It was definitely a great meal that we could not finish in one go. Taking it home and reheating our rice was easy so they are definitely take out-friendly. Prices here are lower than other vegan Viet restaurants so that makes transitioning to a plant-based diet or reminiscing on old eating habits a lot more affordable and easier. Wow! This Vietnamese vegetarian place up the bar for all my vegetarian experiences. I am so impressed with the quality of food here that I now vow to order take out here and not other places that I've been to. The quality of the food you can taste and see when you feast your eyes on that sautéed "meat", or the "fish". I ordered a few dishes and the food looked very vibrant and the texture didn't taste rubbery, drenched in oil and overly salty, it actually taste almost like real meat. I really enjoyed the food here and noticed even in the dishes that I ordered it didn't have a stale smell. I've experienced in similar vegetarian places that the foods weren't made fresh and the smell and texture of the food would turn me off. This is probably the first time that everything I tasted fresh, not heavily processed, and really good. I also got the yogurt and it was not overly sweetened. There are alof of flavor in the soup broth, I know eat outside afraid of MSG but the broth is not too salty or overly sweet. Wish I discovered this place earlier because it is SO GOOD!!! Probably the best vegetarian viet food in the area. The quality was amazing, the portions were big, and they managed to pack the banh xeo well so it stayed crispy even though it was takeout. The inside of the restaurant looked new/clean as well. My only complaints are that the tofu was a bit too salty because of the black bean and the spring roll "meat" to noodle ratio could have been better. Everything was super flavorful and the imitation meat textures were pretty spot on. They did an amazing job with the food and it managed to take in the flavor and texture of actual meat dishes. So happy to have found this little hidden gem! Whenever I feel like having a Vietnamese vegetarian meal I make a visit to DiLac. My go-to order is their Bún bò Huế noodle soup. The soup itself is light, flavorful, and has a nice spicy kick to it - prepare some napkins because it might make you sweat! Each noodle soup comes with a side of fresh vegetables (shredded cabbage, bean sprouts, mint & basil) as well as their house made chili paste. Not only are the dishes Chinese and Vietnamese inspired but every single thing I have ever ordered from here actually tastes good. The freshness of herbs and different spices really enhances flavors, texture and presentation. You can order family style dishes or individual bowls of specialty noodle soups -- there is something for everyone regardless of group size. Reviewing on the spring roll we ordered while drinking our teas from Bloom Tea. DiLac is sharing the store with Blooming Tea so don't be surprised if there is a different set of furniture inside the store. We initially just wanted to enjoy our tea (which was a different review) but since it is a attached to a vegan restaurant we figured to have some snack and ordered spring rolls. My daughter went to the counter and ordered spring roll. The girl behind the counter misheard her and called the order in the kitchen for egg rolls. She actually charged us for the price of the egg roll which was $2+tax for two. We waited for the food thinking I'd get to try some fresh spring roll but then the girl by the counter was handing us a brown bag with the fried egg rolls. We clarified to her that we wanted the spring rolls and paid $5 for 3 pcs. My daughter got refunded for the previous payment she gave. As we dived in our spring roll we noticed that the peanut sauce is not fresh because it was hella cold. It was too thick and if left longer in the fridge could might as well be peanut sauce icecream. The actuall roll has mint, and lettuce along with vermicelli noodles and fake bbq meat. The bbq meat (red in color) tasted funny - like it was marinated in jasmine tea. My daughter initially tasted it and told me about it. I just realized it halfway to my first roll. Since there was 3 rolls in one order, my daughter said that she doesn't want to finish it and gave the last one to me. Over all the spring roll was meh. Great even if you're not a vegetarian. It's mostly vegan but the food is full of flavor.

I had food here before so I'm not sure what the heck happened. All the food came out spicy (Chili spicy). Why? Some are classic viet dishes that does not need to be spicy. I wish they would specify spicy dishes because that plays a role in what people order. Lotus root salad: 3 stars. tasted ok except that it was spicy (mild to mod) but it wasn't like this last time. Wish they just put chili on the side. However, I haven't had a lotus root salad with bell peppers and apple before. It's so far from the classic "goi" although flavor was decent, no one in the fam liked it. Egg rolls: 2.5 stars. Meh. Ok in flavor. I wrapped with salad and mint and ate with dipping sauce. Salted fish fried rice: 2 stars. This was spicy too. Why? It's salted fish. (Veggie of course). But also there is a lot of lemon grass all throughout and some of the pieces of lemon grass are not completely minced so when you bit into it it's bitter. There was no description of the the fried rice and salted fish with lemongrass so I'm befuddled with the flavor. And I got it for the little one as most fried rice are not spicy unless it's Thai flavors. So now she can't eat it either. Clay pot caramelized fish: 3 stars. also slightly spicy. Not great but decent. But why is it spicy. I would have expected plenty of ground pepper but not spicy from Chile. Sizzling salmon: 3 stars. Good textured protein. However the veggies looked dried and over cooked. It's a Friday evening and there is only one person in the front. People are just coming in and some cutting in a head all crazy. People are waiting to order and some are waiting to pick up. My food was ready but I waited over 15 minutes to pick up. If it was good food, I wouldn't mind but it isn't up to par. So sad. With too many of my favorite vegan restaurants closing I decided to travel far and try Di Lac Vegetarian! Worth the trip? Absolutely! Tasty? Beyond a symphony for my taste buds! Starting with the Spring Rolls to cool off and clear the pallet the fridge crunch and the hint of mint were the perfect beginning to a relaxing lunch! The sauce was fresh made to order and I loved it. They can make it without the peanuts if you like. For lunch the main attraction was Gourmet Shaken Cubed Beef with Salad, Bò Lúc Lác! Cubes of vegan beef sauteed in a tang yet sweet sauce covered in carmelized onions and grilled peppers with shallots over a bed of crispy lettuce and thin sliced tomatoes and the edge! It was brilliant. I was in vegan dining out heaven! I can't recommend Di Lac more highly, your taste buds will thank you! read more

With an estimated 85% of Vietnamese claiming Buddhism as their religion, its always a sure bet to find a decent selection of vegetarian/vegan chow at any Viet joint. There are also quite a few dedicated all-vegetarian/vegan Viet restaurants (hint: look for the words "com chay" in the name) that make vegetarianism a no-brainer, and DiLac falls into that category. I had been here once before, but wasn't too impressed. However the day of Tet came and I was really looking forward to some Viet food to celebrate, and I knew going to Little Saigon would be a major shit show. So we decided to celebrate here, and we weren't the only ones. The interior was packed with people dining in and people grabbing chow to-go from their deli-style case. It took over 15-minutes just to be seated, and another 20-min before our orders were taken. It then took what felt like an eternity to get our food. I understand the place was busy, but the servers were unapologetic and just threw the food down in haste. They also got my cohorts order wrong, but the idea of waiting another 20min for his chow was a bit much so he sucked it up and ate it. As for my food, the spring rolls ($5) were just OK and mostly lettuce, and my Thai Sweet & Sour soup ($11) had a decent flavor but the texture of the broth was a bit off. Like they used too much cornstarch or something to thicken it. Not a lot of feat in it either, just mostly broth and a few noodles. I understand it was Tet and I know that bad service is SoP at a lot of Viet places, but DiLac has an air of being slightly more upscale than that. However grumpy servers, wrong orders and mediocre food equals $1 tip and me never darkening their doors again. read more
