Interesting place to eat. The main restaurant is open during the weekends. They only have the outdoor patio open during the week. I walked up to the window to see how they operate. I was informed that the patio is open and to order using a QR code at one of the tables in the patio. You have to sign in and create an account to order. It took me a minute to order. I wanted to try their specialty dishes especially because they have mushroom dishes and soy protein dishes. But by the time I was able to figure out how to order and sign up, I was pressed for time to order a meal and ended up ordering crispy spring rolls. Once your order is placed, you wait for a text to let you know your order is ready. Then I have to pick up at the window. Spring rolls were okay. I really wanted to try the crispy oyster mushrooms or the lion mane mushroom dish. Or even the Sea Fruits plate but I wasn't going to have enough time to enjoy them. The patio was fine. A few picnic tables. You bus your own table at the end. Everything they used was biodegradable. I wish it was a better experience. The food looked delicious in pictures, but eating in an outdoor patio, ordering from a QR code, and picking up your food from the window made for a sad and sub par experience. read more

We came here on a weekday night for dinner. Coming in, it was a little confusing as the indoor seating is only available Fri-Sun, so we walked to the outdoor seating, found a table and ordered via the QR code. The food came out relatively quickly and we went to the pick up counter to grab the food. The food was absolutely delicious with so many vegan options! We ordered: - Crispy Spring Rolls - It was crispy on the outside and the inside was savory and flavorful and a good combination when dipped in the sauce. - Joyful Tofu (GF) - We ordered this with extra rice on the side. The sauce and veggies were delicious combined! The tofu was also delicious, but I think fried tofu would've soaked in the flavor more. - Formosa Noodle Soup - I loved the taste and consistency of the soy protein in this and it tasted so good dipped in the broth! I first stumbled upon this restaurant trying to find a vegan spot to eat when I first moved to the Bay after picking up some furniture. I was ravenously hungry and this place did not disappoint. I ordered a few different items and ate outside on the cute patio outside with my moving partner. I brought my aunt and uncle out here on a second visit some months later and ordered a ton of food. They enjoy trying vegan food on occasion with me so we were all extremely satisfied with the spread, the service, and the spacious restaurant inside. They proclaimed to become regulars as did I on my future visits to San Jose. read more

Went to Vegetarian house on a Saturday around 1pm! Found parking in the lot behind the restaurant and it was not too busy when we arrived. We had such a tough time deciding what to get - we ended ordering the Spicy Cha Cha, Formosa Noodle Soup, Carrot Juice, and Thai Tea. The food came within 20 minutes. Water and utensils are self serve Spicy Cha Cha (5/5): This was delicious! Favorite dish of the two. We both really liked the yam flour crescents - they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Formosa Noodle Soup (4/5): Big portion size! We requested for this to be spicy but it wasn't really so we ended up adding some sriracha and also some lemon to give it more flavor. The vegetables were cooked well an tasted very fresh Carrot juice was refreshing and the Thai tea satisfied my sweet tooth! Wouldn't be able to tell it's vegan. Overall, good food and friendly staff. A must-go if you are in town! Vegetarian House has an extensive vegan menu and seasonal specials to boot. We ordered everything our eyes thought we could finish and went back with leftovers. Everything sounded delicious and in fact, they were! The Japanese Vegetable Tempura was crisp, perfectly cooked, and seasoned. I wasn't too into the dipping sauce it was served with but they tasted great on their own! The Happy Crispy Rice was gluten free and delicious! We love the charred rice bits that come at the bottom of clay pots and hit the spot. The vegetables tasted fresh and was a great on their own or as an accommodation to other entrees! The seafood style entree made with bean curd and veggies was extremely sea tasting but amazingly savory and delicious as well! This paired well with the rice dish we got but would also be lovely with plain white rice. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert. We were more than satisfied with the Thai Tea that we ordered at the start of our meal. It was cold, sweet, and refreshing. The staff was friendly and accommodating. I was down in San Jose for business and offered to take my co-workers out for lunch. One of them being a vegetarian, didn't seem to mind where we at, just wanted a vegetarian option. They had decided on the Vegetarian House. Normally, I would prefer some meat with my meal, but I really enjoy most food, so I didn't have a problem coming here. We were here for lunch, so the dining room wasn't open, but they had a great covered patio. It happened to be a beautiful day outside. I ended up going with the Spring Roll Noodles. This was Rice noodles tossed in Au Lac vinaigrette with cucumber, soy protein, lettuce, bean sprouts, fresh mint, pickled daikon, carrot, and green onion, with crispy spring rolls, topped with crushed peanuts. I can honestly say this dish tasted delightful. It was a great balance of flavors with all the ingredients and the vinaigrette. The spring rolls tasted great as well. This is a dish I would not hesitate to order again. Though I can't remember what my co-workers ate, every dish really looked unique, and everyone said their food tasted great. My interaction with the gentleman at the counter was minimal as he primarily just brought us our food. You order via a QR code. But he ensured that we had everything we needed and was very pleasant. If you find yourself in San Jose and in the need for a Vegetarian restaurant, the Vegetarian House won't disappoint. Honestly the best vegan restaurant in South Bay serving a mix of Asian-based foods and also Western-based foods. Best dishes are the Eggplant Sizzle and Stroganoff, but you really can't go wrong with any of the dishes with all dishes VERY reasonably priced. Note that it's takeout during weekdays and the dining room is open during weekends. They do have a nice parking lot with ~20 spots The food is flavorful and comes out quickly. They're very accommodating of allergies and can remove ingredients most times and showcase which allergies are in the food. The staff are friendly and quite attentive, although you do grab your own tableware from a communal table. read more

I'm giving this a 4, but I'd rather give it a 3.5. The plan was to get dinner before seeing a show, but the time it took to read the menu on our phones (from a QR code that we needed to scan at one of the patio tables), create an account, and place an order ended up taking too long so I just ordered the dal. For a first-time visitor and not knowing the menu it was a bit of a pain to look through it on my phone. Having a laminated menu posted somewhere would be helpful. I also didn't like having to set up an account to order. I wonder if you have to do that Fri - Sun when indoor dining is open??? Once your order is ready you receive a text to go pick it up at a take-out window that a few Door Dashers were seen using. You bus your own table. A trash can (maybe compost can) is located just outside the patio and a place to set your trays is also nearby. Of course, as a first-time visitor it took a bit of time to figure out where to bus everything since they were not located in the patio area. If you are driving, there is ample parking. You need a code to use the restroom, which is clean and spacious. As for the dal, it was good. It didn't look like the picture on the menu, so I was expecting something different. Amazing vegan/vegetarian Asian food They've been around for a long time and have managed to maintain the same quality over the years! The interiors are cozy, service is just alright, nothing great.. typical Asian restaurant style but nothing to complain about. We happened to be in the neighborhood around brunch over the weekend. After a quick search for vegetarian food and gluten free options, we settled onto trying Vegetarian House. It's located around the SJSU campus. We parked along the streets, but they actually have a parking lot that we found afterwards. Since it was our first visit, we ordered a few things to sample the food. Overall, the flavor is pretty good. We ordered the fried cauliflower, which was drizzled with a sweet and tangy sauce. It was flash-fried, so the batter was light, and it was not too heavy- just enough to scratch the itch without feeling weighed down afterwards. We also ordered the teriyaki bowl, which had a delicious dressing, maybe carrot ginger? Lastly, we ordered the joyful tofu, which is like a kung pao tofu. At first, we were hesitant to try it, since we handle spicy foods, but it's pretty mild, and more tangy than spicy. The service was great- the gentleman taking our order, was a young guy who explained everything and made recommendations. We had originally ordered another dish, and he suggested that we try another type of protein, since it was our first time. Silverware, water, and napkins are self serve. It gives the feel of a mom and pop shop. There are stained glass windows to help hide the natural outdoor surroundings, which would have been a parking lot or street. A very sincere, heartfelt vegan restaurant. We could feel the intention of the spiritual community behind the food, its flavors, quality and service. The set up is a bit unusual but we've seen it in other similar type restaurants where you pick up your own dishes and silverware, water. Staff is busy, happy and helpful. The menu is a long one so it took us awhile to figure out what flavors and elements we wanted to have without ordering too much. Especially because we wanted one of their desserts! Although there are plenty of regulars here and my company even caters from here (and I've had good experiences then), the bun bo hue that I tried in person didn't hit the mark. The vegetarian bun hue was severely deficient in flavor, especially that "tang". The customer service here is great however. After they noticed I didn't touch my food and wasn't enjoying it whatsoever, they discounted me 50% off my item without me asking. I've been coming to Vegetarian House since it first opened back in the mid-90s, and after all these years, I still haven't found better vegan food, locally or globally. Their food is consistently amazing, and their mix of Asian and Western cuisines makes it easy for an interracial couple to find something we both love. My go-to dishes are: * Queen's Joy: Soy protein stir-fried with onions and garlic--so simple, yet so good. * Claypot Sensation: Bean curd cakes wrapped in seaweed and braised in a rich, savory gravy. * Dancing Asparagus: Fresh asparagus cooked with soy protein, mushrooms, bell peppers, and a slightly spicy peanut sauce. Perfect balance of flavors. * Rainbow: Crispy bean curd wrapped in nori, served with veggies and mushrooms in sweet & sour sauce. Always hits the spot. Honestly, I think I've tried everything on the menu, and I've loved it all. They're open for indoor dining Friday through the weekend, and on weekdays, you can sit on their heated patio (they're closed Tuesdays). Horrible, horrible service, and very complicated for it to be your first time coming to eat to this place. The door is like they have different schedule dates. You have to go sit in the patio. You're not allowed to talk to nobody. You cannot ask questions you just scan a code and see what they bring you. You cannot edit your order. You cannot be a specific with what you do or what you don't want on your order. Very complicated place. The only time you see somebody. Body is when they're gonna send you the Food through the window and that's it. They don't answer you Questions in person or nothing. Horrible customer service. Three of us shared: crispy spring rolls, 4 - pronounced crunch and substantial contents and orangey dipping broth pleasant. Potstickers 4 - wonderfully crisp outside, contents had nice texture and brown dipping broth a good accompaniment. Pad Thai and Crispy? Chow Mein - tossup on which we liked best. Liked smooth texture of pad and tofu strips but one didn't care for the shrimp looking yam crescents. Loved the crunchy peanuts and wouldn't mind a bit more. Loved the mushrooms in chow mein. Well established, vegan eatery that's been around 30+ years as of 2025! Dating back to the time when going vegan was rare Lots of menu options, including an extensive array of fake meat dishes. Lots of choices with vegetable based (no fake meat) too. The fake meat quality is excellent and we could taste the freshness in all the ingredients! Very flavorful food! Amazing service and knowledgeable staff. Outdoor patio is open on certain days and the dining hall is also open on select days. Patio is heated when required. Large interior seating areas - not sure if private parties are possible. At different times we have tried - fresh rolls - 4 stars - golden nuggets 5 stars - quinoa sushi - 4 stars - chow mein - 5 stars - eggplant tofu - 5 stars - dancing asparagus - 5 stars - korean? bowl - 5 stars - need to try their delicious looking desserts which are vegan too!! Took a chance and ordered vegan from this restaurant. It did not disappoint. I placed our entire order online and was sent a time when it would be ready. The time was absolutely accurate and the service was polite and efficient. We ordered for 6 people and the portions were more than generous, we even had leftovers. We love this place! We always get the chow mein and spring rolls - even when ordering through DoorDash the food arrives perfectly made and warm! Went here on Sunday for lunch with friends! There's a parking lot on the side and the place has a good amount of seating inside. I think there's seating outside too but it was closed off the day we came. The inside of the restaurant is really cute! I really liked the colorful stain glass windows. The menu has a variety of kinds of food, from asian food to burgers. I got the pad thai which was huge, very warm and filling. They definitely give you big portions and at a reasonable price. I've been eating at the VH for over 6 years (since I was a student at SJSU). It's a restaurant that is always consistent when you're in the mood for Asian vegan food. It is 100% vegan. I haven't been back since right after the reopened during the Covid pandemic. That's when they shut down their indoor dining and were only doing to-go. I went back this weekend and expected their indoor dining space to be open but nope!! They're still closed for indoor dining, apparently for renovations? They did spiffy up their outdoor eating space but it still feels like I'm eating on a park bench lol. The area isn't the best so I really can't wait for their indoor space to reopen. When you arrive, you order at the window or at your table and then you get a notification to pick up your food when it's ready. Such a shame they package everything even when you order to eat outdoors, not eco friendly at all. The outdoor space has self serve water and sauces available for you to use as you please. This time around I ordered their spring roll noodles. It was packaged to-go so I was surprised that they put the dressing in for me. The veggies were DRENCHED which made it overall too sweet for my liking. If the food is packaged they really should put dressing on the side. I really enjoyed their soy protein and the spring rolls though. It's a nice portion so you definitely get your moneys worth. We chose Vegetarian House Vegan for our holiday party as many families attending are vegetarian. We ordered a medium Party Pack under their catering menu for 19 people. If you do not want to pay for the serving utensils ($10), just write this in the comments and you won't be charged. Originally I delayed my order because of this, but then I called to clarify. The food is delicious and the serving size is generous. Staff included signage for each dish which included all the ingredients. This was a very nice touch. Working with the staff was seamless.
