Mongolian beef with chow mein upgrade
Alice V.

I came in for lunch and there were plentiful seatings and a good ambiance. Service was attentive and nice. Just got water for drinks, and it was straight tap water no filter, not good. I did like the chili oil on the table. The lunch special was expensive for a "lunch special" priced at $17 per meal. It came with a side of soup of either egg drop soup or hot and sour. Then your choice of entree with either rice, fried rice, or chow mein for an additional $3. Then also one egg roll. The food was decent. I got the Mongolian beef with the chow mein upgrade and egg drop soup. My partner had gotten kung pao chicken but it wasn't spicy. We might've gotten the wrong dish(?). There was A LOT of food for one $17 lunch meal as shown in the picture. This meal could've been a 2 person meal for sure, splitting it at $8.50 per person; which would've been more reasonable than ordering 2 separate meals. So unless you have the intentions to either share with someone or eat leftovers (because it's basically 2 meals) I think it's an okay deal. But if you don't dine in, you don't get soup so you lose out on value a bit and ordering it online is more expensive. Wouldn't come back because it just wasn't adding up right for me.

General's chicken lunch special

I got generals chicken w/egg roll lunch special. nothing to write home about. If u want rice or chow mein it's $3 more but the photos show it comes w/it. Very misleading.

Dim sum is always my go to!! I can never get enough. I love this spot and this is the one spot I miss the most since I moved away. This was our first time trying their soup which I didn't get a picture of, but their sizzling rice was so damn good. We ordered it with chicken and I love the amount of veggies that they include in theirs. We got the salt and pepper shrimp and I'm impressed that they used the extra large shrimps so they didn't shrivel small when cooking. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area. If you've never had dim sum, what are you waiting for? Get in there!

Pork won tons July 2024

Bland sauces. It used to be better. But fresh Veges and still pretty good. The pork won tons had no sauce for dipping. The flavor of the food like my happy family fish was just off. It wasn't good. Also our waitress was a young Caucasian woman who was very unsure of what she was doing and had lots of trouble taking a basic order for lunch. We ordered off the lunch menu. She nearly gave us dinner items but we discovered her mistake as well and corrected that.

Pork spareribs lunch combo with soup
Crystal H.

We dropped in Saturday at 11am to have brunch after stopping by a store. This was the only Dim sum place I could find in Salinas. There was only 1 table taken. We ordered the lunch combo pork spareribs with black Bean sauce and a bunch of dim sum items. The best item was the spareribs. Decent items were the hot & sour soup, shrimp dumpling, tofu skin wrap, Siu Mai. The skin on the shrimp chives dumpling was too thick and the inside is like a shrimp Ball instead of just chives and shrimp pieces like other places. The pan fried turnip was ok. Think it has a lot of flour with some dried shrimp, Chinese sausage, and squid. The veggie eggroll that came with the lunch combo was ok. We order meat type of eggrolls. I think they are better for Chinese food instead of dim sum. And they don't push dim sum carts here. The food came out at a good pace so we didn't feel rushed. You pay at the counter in the front.

Clean. Friendly. Good food. Average dim sums dishes, but it is the best choice in the area.

This place was a real surprise to me. A waitress noticed me quickly and came to ask if had placed an order or needed to. They have a big menu! The lunch specials are amazing deals - a main course, with chow mein, fried rice, and soup! All for less than $15?! In this economy?? So I ordered the cashew chicken and a starter of cheese puffs (wanton). The food was all flavorful, the chow mein had a deliciously satisfying chew, the cheese puffs had a tangy cream cheese filling. I would say there wasn't an abundance of chicken - but there was a lot of other food to make up for it. Oh and complimentary hot green tea! I will definitely come back again!

I ordered delivery through DoorDash and had mixed results. The beef with broccoli lunch special was…read moreokay--nothing particularly memorable, but it was probably the best part of the order. Unfortunately, the chow mein was one of the worst I've had. It was mostly noodles with very little meat, and the meat that was included tasted old. I ended up throwing away at least half of it. Normally, I would have sent it back, but since it was a delivery order that wasn't practical. I had hoped to save some for leftovers, but the quality wasn't good enough to justify reheating. I also ordered two char siu baos, but after my experience with the rest of the meal, my expectations are pretty low. My biggest concern was the packaging. None of the food was sealed in any way. The chow mein container had popped open during transit and was handed to me already open. The other takeout container wasn't taped or sticker-sealed either, and the soup came in a plastic container with no seal at all. In my opinion, restaurants using delivery services should place tamper-evident stickers or tape on all containers. Food should not be arriving open or capable of popping open during delivery. The lack of sealing was concerning and did not inspire confidence. The soup was also only about half full, which made me wonder whether some had spilled during transit or if that was the intended portion size. Overall, the beef with broccoli was merely okay, the chow mein was very disappointing, and the packaging raised concerns. Based on this experience, I do not plan to order from or visit this restaurant again.

I actually had to circle back to find it, which already made it feel like a bit of a hidden gem. Arriving around 1:30 pm, the dining room was completely empty at first glance. For a moment I wondered if they were closed, until I noticed the doors slightly ajar. Not long after stepping in, I was greeted and invited to sit wherever I liked, which added a relaxed, unhurried feel to the whole experience. I went with the Mango Beef Special Lunch Combo ($10.99) The dish came with generous crisp vegetables, chunks of mango that paired nicely with the zesty savory beef. The fried rice and chow mein leaned a bit on the mild side flavor-wise, but a touch of chili oil and some of the entrée sauce brought everything to life. The combo also includes soup of the day and your choice of appetizer, making it a well-rounded plate. Portion-wise, it's more than fair--especially for the price. In fact, it easily undercuts most nearby Chinese spots and even fast food options, in the later case being obviously fresher and more balanced alternative. This feels like the kind of place you root for. I'll be back to explore more of the menu--and honestly, I'd take supporting a quiet local kitchen like this over a fast food chain any day.

They're lunch specials are fairly priced, 13.99 and they have a big selection. I ordered the chicken and vegetables with fried rice and noodles. The noodles were on the dry side, but the fried rice was good. There was only one server during a lunch rush, you could tell she was a little overwhelmed, but she managed to help everyone.

I'm happy to say that now there is a decent asian place that we can drop by if we have a craving or if we are bringing overseas friends to the aquarium. Very clean interiors, you seat yourself and order at the counter. We had the beef noodle soup, veggie noodle soup, and the XLB. The beef noodle soup was mostly soy sauce based, not too salty, just the right amount of savoring. The meat was not beef shank, but a leaner cut with less connective tissue so don't expect any chewy tendons. And the noodles were cooked with just the right chew. XLB was only okay. Not terrible but not something I would order again. Overall decent, and for Monterey standards definitely a 4 out of 5. Obviously cannot compare to beef noodle shops in the south bay, but this will do if you are spending a day touring the local area and have the craving for noodle soup. No free water here by the way, you'll have to buy a bottle of water at the front counter so plan accordingly.

We ordered basic egg roll, the dim sum sampler, combination chow mein, and Shanghai Noodle Three delight. The egg roll came with 2 rolls. They were the perfect amount of crispy and flavor. The dim sum sampler was mostly average. The only piece we could not eat because we found it disgusting was the chicken mochi. My partner said the chow mein was something he would come back for. If that was the only thing he ate it would be 5 stars. I ate the Shanghai Noodle Three delight. It was not a delight. It advertised having items like noodles, bean sprouts, onions, chicken, egg, shrimp, and calamari. After ordering I found it is supposed to come with 3 pieces of shrimp and 3 pieces of calamari. My plate only had two pieces of calamari. At first I was disappointed there wasn't more calamari, but then I tasted it. The calamari tasted rubbery, tough, and no good flavor. When I brought the problem of only having 2 pieces of calamari and they only said it usually tastes like that and I should have gotten three pieces. (So no solution.) My advice to the restaurant, if you know the majority of your customers think the calamari is disappointing, don't serve calamari. The dish would have been much better if you put more shrimp and deleted the calamari. (Without up charging customers.) The servers were kind and friendly. It did seem weird how busy they were when there were only two tables eating at the place. We barely saw them but they did fill up our drinks before we thought to ask.
