Driving back from LA to the Bay Area, we stopped at this little Chinese restaurant in Salinas. So hungry and tired. They served us warm green tea- so good for the dark winter night. We ordered a bunch of dishes, and the waiter was so kind to let us know the quantities are more. Yea that's right, big plates is it! Yummy comforting food. We all loved it, including the kids. We asked for water and no ice, got each a lemon wedge in our water glasses. The kids enjoyed their water too! China House is probably the longest running Chinese restaurant in east salinas. The new owners have maintained the tradition of the original owners, with a light spin. I like some of their dishes, because it isn't too salty or oily. This is more of a comfort food spot. They have a wide array of lunch specials too. The staff are warm and welcoming. Service is attentive and prompt. Sometimes they do get swamped though. The atmosphere is pleasant and they are always adding new features. Such as their new beer and wine bar is coming along nicely. Terrible experience! I told the server I had a shellfish allergy and she acknowledged it but brought me chow Mein with shrimp. Our orange chicken was burnt, we asked for fried rice and got white steamed rice. When she replaced my plate for chow mein without shrimp she brought me "the new plate" BUT the rest of my food was COLD. The new fried rice was just pretty much white rice with soy sauce heated up. We kindly smiled and thanked them for their time. We paid and left our plates full and server . Terrible service from out server and food was just disgusting . My family and I have been going to this restaurant for years, never had any issues with placing to-go orders..prices are reasonable. Although since this is a review, I must say that the restaurant itself is in need of major remodeling. Old carpentry, rips in the seating etc.. unfortunately, my son found a hair in his food last night. We understand that stuff may happen like that once in every blue moon so we disregarded it and finished our dinner. Here I am the next day warming up leftovers and I found a piece of sharded metal maybe from a grill cleaner of some sort in my bbq pork fried rice and chicken chow mein. I can't even imagine ingesting it and getting ill from thier mistake. We will never ever, be back again. Please check your servings before eating from them for stuff like that.. horrible! read more

Definitely the most underrated Chinese restaurant in town I think the reason why it's because it's tucked away in the middle of Alisal street surrounded by a lot of Mexican restaurants and businesses. The food here is amazing cooked fresh the orange chicken is my favorite as well as the sizzling seafood soup amazing. Definitely worth checking out its not perfect the parking is terrible and I feel like the inside of the restaurant should get a modern remodeling job. But overall highly recommended read more

I might give this place a 3 star max but would never reach a 4 IMO, fried and battered entrees doesn't necessarily mean Chinese, drowning your meal in oyster sauce doesn't mean Chinese food either - There is no WOW factor in the food, nothing to make your eyes twinkle and look forward to the second scoop of hot and sour soup or the next dishing of pork fried rice, Oh well. As soon as we walked in, we smelled wet dog. The carpet was filthy and smelled terrible. The wallpaper is peeling and the walls were dirty. We ordered the combination chowmein and we had to return it as they forgot to put the shrimp in it. The manager came with a small bowl of chowmein with a few shrimp in it. The chowmein was not edible; it was extremely greasy and no flavor. The BBQ Pork and broccoli was a fail. There were little bits of pork in it and big pile of broccoli. The server never checked back on us and we needed refills on our drinks.The manager was rude with us when I said we were not paying for the chowmein as we left it untouched. He was verbally abusive and said because we "ordered" the chow mein, we had to pay for it even though we did not eat it. We did not pay for it and he told us to never come back again. Not a problem!! This restaurant actually impressed me. I found out about this place from two coworkers. They told me how good this place was so I had to go and see for myself. I went on a Tuesday around 7pm. Just by looking at the place I wasn't too sure but don't let it deceive you. I walked in and and got greeted promptly. I told the girl I wanted a to go order of shrimp chowmein, vegetable fried rice, kung pao chicken, and orange chicken. I also told her I didn't want them to add msg to my food since my coworker told me they use msg so to make sure it was without. She was really nice and my whole order came out to 30 something. I sat down for about 10-15 minutes and they called me by name to let me know it was ready. They gave me a free side of white rice which I'm sure all Chinese places do that. When I got home I tried it and honestly it was all pretty good. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the Kung pao chicken since it was mostly veggies and it was rare biting into chicken. Also they only added a few pieces of shrimp to my chowmein they need to be a little more generous with the shrimp. Other than that the food was good and I will probably go back. I don't know where to start, the bathrooms where disgusting. If the bathrooms look like that imagine the kitchen. So we sat right across the kitchen door way which means I saw alot. But let me start with, the place smelled funky, I saw a woman that works in the kitchen lick her fingers while serving a plate. I saw one of the cooks go inside the restroom with his apron on. Now I work at a restaurant and it's mandatory to take off the apron and leave it out, he took it inside with him. The food was horrible we had to return one plate because it tasted old and hard.
