Since moving to Austin my wife and I have been searching for a good Middle Eastern restaurant, and we finally found one! Usually buffets aren't the best, but for Middle Eastern food they work pretty well, and Dimassi's nailed it. The stuffed grape leaves, the falafel, hummus, the list goes on and on it was all great food. If you go on the weekend, they have lamb shank, but you have to remember to ask them. You could also take food to go from the buffet. Outside of the food truck at the domain, this is by far the most authentic Middle Eastern food in Austin. read more

Ate here, in part, based on the tripadvisor reviews. I would say that the food was, overall, good. Some things, such as the lamb shank, were excellent, well-prepared. Some things, pita, lentil soup, basmati rice, and eggplant were certainly edible, but just that, edible -- either bland, over-cooked, or just meh. Chicken dry. Tilapia had nice flavor but was overcooked. Gyro meat appeared to have sat out too long, dry, very disappointing. Kafta kabobs were good. Spinach delicious. Rice pudding a bit too firm, but tasty. All of the salads I tried, and I believe I had 3 of the 4, had fresh tasting ingredients and were good. In regard to the service ... what service? I get that this is a buffet. I've been to many buffets. From a distance of about 50 feet, the nearest employee on my arrival pointed toward the mostly open tables. I took my seat. I've not been here before, didn't realize I was to get my own silverware and beverage -- which was fine, I just didn't know. Walked halfway to the employee that greated me and mouthed and used a hand gesture for silverware - he pointed to the area that the silverware is set out. No one came by during my 45 minutes or so at the restaurant to inquire if the food was good, if I found everything/needed anything, etc. I sat facing the buffet. No one looked over the food/passed by the food and stirred it, turned it, fluffed it up, etc the entire time I was at the restaurant (although additional food was added to some of the recepticals). By the time I finished, I had accumulated a soup bowl and four empty plates which were eventually cleared (along with clearing of three other tables nearby that had been vacated for 15-25 minutes without being cleared of dishes, cups, etc). I'd have to say I won't be back. Too many good Meditteranean options in town that have better food and an overall better eating/dining experience. Wow - excellent and very authentic. Usually I am not a huge fan of buffets as I tend to overeat, but the meat here always leaves me wanting to go for more. The tabooli, hummus, kafta, falafel gyro meat is all done well and the only other place I can compare this to is when I actually had local cuisine in UAE. Not sure if the chef is local but the way its cooked is superb! Also the variety is excellent - you can go there and only try a few things and make it into a full meal because you really cant eat too much of everything thats on the table. I usually go there from work with friends and I never leave dissatisfied. Hoping they open another location more up north! read more

Bland, Food, Lacks Lacks Depth of Flavor Middle Eastern food is something I have a lot of experience making. Tahini, Salt, garlic, lemon, and mint are Essential Ingredients. Use them in the correct proportion, and your food explodes with flavor. Other than tahini, the Essential Ingredients were missing from the food I ate at Dimmassi. The only flavor in the hummus was tahini. It lacked garlic and lemon. The baba was not bad. They grill fresh egg plant so it has a light smokey flavor, but it iacked garlic, lemon and salt. It would hav also been mproved if the egg plant had been cut, salted and allowed to drain before cooking to remove the acrid bitterness. The tomatoes in the taboli were "mushy", like they had been processed then refrigerated for too long. The salad (chopped cucumber, tomatoes, carrots) was made in too large a quantity, so it sat out too long and did not taste fresh. Also, there is a lot of potential to improve the salad dressing by adding fresh lemon and mint. The tomato sauce based hot items shared the same bland flavor profile, and I could taste the can metal. They lacked the essential garlic and mint. The chicken kabob (white meat chicken) was over cooked and dry. I am not a fan of the fresh baked bread, it has too much baking powder for my taste. I preferr the more traditional style of unleavened bread. It is a lot more work to make, but could be the best bread in Austin if it was fresh baked in their bread oven. read more

The food has home-cooked feel to it. It's not like your typical buffet where did your slap a lot of plates. Fresh pita bread comes out of the oven right in front of your eyes. The salad bar and the fixings are really fresh. Everything from the lamb shank to the baklava to the chicken and the gyro meat are fantastic and freshly cooked. read more

Went here this past weekend using a Groupon and I have to say, as much as I dislike the drive from SA, this is one place I will be sure to come back! I am a fan of Mediterranean food, but I have a bad habit of picking the same dishes over and over again because I know what I like. When I saw this place on Groupon, I had to get the deal so I could allow myself to explore more mediterranean food. And I'm quite glad I did! For starters, there isn't much staff here- just a guy at the door/register who says to seat yourself, and another who clears your table occasionally. The rest of the staff are obviously in the back cooking away, I assume. Just a heads up that the drinks and plain pita bread (both crisp and baked) are along the back wall behind the buffet to serve yourself- I totally didn't notice this and went half my meal wondering when we would get water. My bad! Okay, so straight up, I stuffed my face. Let me tell you how. Hummus and baba ghanouj- both tasty, though I prefer the latter to be warm. The hummus had a plain white-ish color to it, which I am not used to, but the taste was not a problem. In addition to the pita mentioned above, there were also two trays of pita slices at the buffet- one topped with melted feta, which I could easily have eaten endlessly if I had been allowed to; and another with spices and seasonings that was also quite tasty. The rice and rice-pasta dishes were flavorful and moist, and I topped them with the chicken kabob which was also moist and well-seasoned: I probably ate way too much of that. There was a chicken pasta dish that seemed overcooked, but that may just have been because it had been sitting out. It just wasn't really my thing, though. I prefer my dolmas warmed, but here they were served cold. They were still okay though, as were the falafel- had way too many of those, too. I tried a few other odds and ends across the buffet, but those were the main noteworthy ones. Now for drinks and desserts- I am not a drinks or desserts person, let me start off by saying. I tend to drink water 99% of my life, but something made me want to try the rose drink- and good lord, I could drown myself in that stuff. It was heavenly. I don't know if it was a tea, or just a drink made with rose water, or steeped petals, or what. I have no clue what it was aside from delicious and sweet. Between this stuff and the honey cake (ode to follow), I could practically feel myself getting diabetes. The honey cake was amazing- it's not something I normally would have even tried, but for whatever reason, I selected a piece when I picked up my baklava (which was pretty generic), and it was like a mouth gasm. Sweet and moist, but somehow dense and light at the same time. I immediately made a mental note to start seeking out bakeries in San Antonio that might have it. I really wanted to eat more than one piece, as I know I won't beback here any time soon and it was so good,but I simply didn't have the room in my belly. Where to begin? Let's start with the sign on the outside that says "Delight Food"--is that a play on "delightful"? Because it "Was Not". How about the 1-hour parking in front of the restaurant (all the spots directly in front of the restaurant). My friend and I thought it was ludicrous (unless you're on lunch break, who orders and finishes a meal in under 1 hour)? 30 minutes later, and walking out the door, we knew why. But I'm getting ahead of myself. We walk in and are greeted by "two buffets?" Yes, we're doing fine today, how are you oh surly gentleman? And thank you for explaining how your restaurant works. We know it says buffet outside, but maybe a general intro to your place, since you are new, would be nice. Okay, two. $12.95. For both? No, for each. (ignore the tip jar--for what service am I tipping?) We should have left then, but we thought if the food is good, really good, it will be worth the $13. The cafeteria-like feel of the place wasn't overly welcoming either. Sorry to say the bland decor was an indication of the bland food. The only exceptions were the tabbouleh (cold salad of bulgur, parsley, mint) which was yummy and the hummus (spread/dip made from chickpeas, usually) and the pita bread. Oh, and we liked the cabbage rolls and Kafta Kabob (which looked like cat poop, but tasted good). And from what we could tell, there was no slime in the ice machine. But then again, they're too new. Some of the dishes on the buffet weren't labeled, so I'm not sure what we ate. There were several dishes consisting either of dried, petrified, chicken or ground beef. Let me just say I haven't had to spit out food since I don't know when. Stay away from the little meatballs. They had the look and perhaps (I'm only guessing), taste and texture, of cat or dog food. Oh, and there's a sign that says something along the lines of "take all you can eat, not all you can serve"--whatever. I go to buffets so I can taste everything and I will be leaving food behind. I purchased the groupon as I was reading the Yelp reviews on this place, but they did not discourage me too much. I knew that I couldn't pass up a deal on my favorite type of food that my family cooks. On that note, because I have grown up eating most of this food, I knew I would be picky. One great thing is that all the meat is halal and only a few of the meat dishes contain dairy, so I was able to treat my roommate to some lunch! I took my friend Sunday afternoon at 11:45 (they open at 11). The restaurant was not busy, but not empty and just as I walked in, I saw fresh pita bread being made in the brick oven! What a great sign! This was our first time going here, so we were waiting for someone to sit us down, but the manager said we pay after and can just sit down on our own. I started off with the salads and there is a good variety of them. The hummus was very good and the baba ganoush was not bad either (my dad makes the baba g. better). They have a fresh cabbage salad that I really enjoyed and the spinach salad was lightly tossed in a vinaigrette. Then when I saw that my roommate had a beautiful lamb shank on her plate, I knew it was time to make it to the meat line. I put one or two pieces of the ground beef kabob, meatballs, falafel, chicken, along with some of the vegetable sides like okra and beans made in tomato sauce. My roommate and I split this food, although I ate most of it... I tried the kafta kabob (ground beef) and it was great! It tasted different than my dad makes it, but it was equally as good if not better! (do not tell him I said that) The lamb shank was amazing and there was pulled beef that was very good as well. I tried two types of chicken and they were both very good. Then I had some watermelon and I tried all three of the desserts. The baklava was very nice and I like that the portions on the desserts are small, so I didn't have to stuff myself too much! Also, I had some of the rose water which was very good, but a little too sweet for me so I watered it down and it was perfect! When Z and I walk into Dimassi's around dinner time, there are about 10 patrons there. No one is at the front counter to seat us or take our money. We stand near the doorway, looking around, feeling very confused. Should we just sit down? I think we need to pay first.. What? Is this a pizza buffet? Hey, I don't make the rules. After a few minutes, some guy comes and takes our 25 dollars and tells us to sit anywhere we want. We grab a spot near the corner and sit down to survey the restaurant. Flourescent lighting. Sterile tiling. If it weren't for the belly dancing music blaring in my ears and the nudie lady dancing on the tele, I would have sworn we were sitting in a hospital cafeteria, waiting to visit his grandmother. Anyway, after absorbing the "ambiance", we head to the buffet. There was a pretty decent selection of food: falafels, lamb shanks, egg plant, chicken, and a few types of salads. Overall, these dishes were OK. However, I believe that the cornerstone to every good Mediteranean meal is a good pita. Mmm... hot, soft pitas... Unfortunately, Dimassi's dumps their pitas into a giant freeforall basket, so the pitas were cold and dry. Overall, I wasn't a huge fan of this place, although I can see why people would eat here: there's a good selection of food; it's a buffet; and it's affordable. As a few other Yelpers indicated, Dimassi's is quite vegan friendly -- they even go to the extent to mark vegan options on their buffet. Vegan options include: rice, pita, falafel, dolmas, hummus, tahini, babaganoush, tabouli, roasted cauliflower (one of our favorite dishes), roasted peppers and eggplant, cucumber salad and an assortment of fruit. The hummus is ridiculous. So creamy. Way better than any hummus you are going to find in a grocery store. We live near by and stop here often to grab a quick bite to eat. If you are looking for a place with 5 star atmosphere and personal service, this is not your kind of place. If you are looking for a place with 5 star food, then you have found it! It's trully a self-service place, from seating to the buffet to drinks. But the presentation of the food was nice - all the selections where fresh, the correct temperature, constantly refreshed/replaced, and delicious! Even as they were placing itmes on the buffet the staff was professional and courteous. Heck, they even thanked me for trying an item! There is a wide variety of items including many vegetarian items. My favorite items were the baba ganoush which had a very creamy texture and a smokey flavor, the stuffed zuchinni with a hearty rice and meat filling and the Dimassi eggplant that I found rich and buttery. It is very obvious that they use fresh vegetables in their dishes! Oh, and I can not forget to mention the fresh, warm pita bread that is baked in a stove oven right in front of you. I can honestly say there wasn't a single item that I tried (and I tried many!) that I didn't care for. Everything was flavorful without the spices and herds being overpowering. This place is really solid. The fresh hot pitas are great (5/5) and the gyro meat is solid (4/5). The chicken was kind of boring, especially if you don't eat the skin (2/5) but the lamb shank (only on weekends, I think) is absolutely amazing (6/5). I will definitely come back and I will have a much more targeted approach that focuses only on hot pitas filled with gyro, salad/babagnosh/hummus/etc and lamb shank, when possible. background - I used to travel to the Middle East three or four times a year for work and I was VERY excited about a Lebanese restaurant opening in Austin. I was considerably MORE excited before I ate than after. Ambiance - Dimassi's was very clean and looked maintained will. It WAS really really bright so I wouldn't recommend it as a date place with a girl you met at a bar in the dark. First off, she met YOU in the dark as well so bright lights might mean the end of a relationship before it begins. Service - Its a self-serve buffet and I'm pretty awesome at serving myself so I would have to give myself 5 stars on this one. Food - Um... so... SOMEONE at Dimassi's must have gotten sick with Salmonella poisoning at some point in the past because I think they cook their chicken kabobs for about 4 hours. At which point they flip them. And cook the other side for 4 hours. Seriously, if I'm in Dimassi's and someone robs the place I can find a pointy kabob and it will double as a ninja-star. The various rice dishes were average-ish and the salads were kind of disappointing. In all honesty I would consider the food below average for a mall found court and considering the price it falls VERY much below average. Overall - I've heard Dimassi's has food food in Houston so this might just be a manager of the owner training the cook to a higher degree. I would rate the food about four stars. It was good except the vegetables which, every single one was over cooked and had sat too long. The sauces were good as were the dips and other dishes. While we waited for our other group members, I asked the manager who was working if they had wine for sale. He gave me a dirty look and said, "We only sell good things, so no, we don't have wine." I said, "Excuse me, but I wasn't aware that wine was a bad thing." His reply was, "well if you drink one, you drink more and you can't stop." Um...ok. So, I'm an alcoholic??? It was just so pious and unnecessary. We had a group of eight and three of us a Groupon to use. The guy gave us all sorts of hell over it, which kind of soured the visit. He said you can't have more than one per table, so we said that was fine, we would sit at separate tables. He said, "That doesn't matter, you all came together." The Groupon only stated "One per table", not per group. So, after getting our food, we sat in a room by ourselves, away from the other customers.. We were almost done eating when he turns around from the cash register and tells us we are being too loud. We were in a room by ourselves and there were MAYBE six other people in the entire place. At that point, we all got up and left and vowed to not return. I honestly thought the price was good and the food nice enough to return, but I will not give money to hateful businesses. 24 veggie dishes? Wow!! I think I missed some but I tried about 24 of them. This place is heaven for vegetarians. Thanks to Dimassi's, I figured out a way to make middle eastern food unhealthy: gluttony is the secret!! The hot bread they serve is a treat. Their pilaf is great! Cauliflower is yummy, Honey cake is delicious, Tabouli is refreshing, falafels are scrumptious, their salads are fresh and inviting, Grilled veggies are tasty, Curried veggie soup is amazing....writing this review. Vegan buffet heaven. We were a bit taken aback by the $12 dinner price tag, my friend being near-vegan (we discussed how non-meat-eaters really should get a discount on buffets, since we are only eating, usually, half or less of the food on offer, and the cheapest food at that!), but we really enjoyed the meal. Some of the items suffered a bit from their prolonged exposure to the heated buffet, and were a bit soggy or gloopy, but, generally, the quality was solid. They had an impressive selection, if not variety. There are a lot of cucumber based dishes, and a lot of lemon juice and tomatoes (I don't like tomatoes, and they're diced up in most of the veggie dishes here, so I mostly picked around them). All this was to be expected. However, initially I expected a broader variety, since the place bills itself as a "Mediterranean" buffet, not a "Middle Eastern" buffet, which is what it really is, specifically a Lebanese buffet with a few other items thrown in. Not that that's a bad thing at all! The roasted eggplant with pomegranate molassases, peppers, and olive oil was out of this world, and well worth another trip. The tahini was really good and so creamy that I was suspicious! The falafels during our visit were overcooked to the point of being burnt, which was a disappointment (but did not stop me from eating one!). The grilled veggies were also great, as was the fresh, homemade pita bread with herbs. The atmosphere is strip-mall-decorated-by-Big-Lots, with bright lighting, and reminded me of being back in East Texas. I will definitely be going here again since it's so near my friend's house, and we are sick of going to Kerbey. Also, it's cheaper before 4:00pm; $12 is a little steep for all vegetables, especially considering this place has little to no atmostphere. However, I remain impressed with both the selection of vegan items and the clear labelling on each dish, showing its ingredients. A+ on that. All restaurants should do this! read more

I frequented Dimassi's in Houston for years and years, so when I saw the sign go up on the restaurant, I called everybody I knew who was familiar with Dimassi's. That it's "just around the corner" from my house is a definite bonus. I was surprised to hear they were going to set this restaurant up as a buffet. I always felt their "cafeteria line" option worked so well. Although I recognize this model is probably more cost effective, I do wish it allowed for more than one pricing model, such as...vegetable options only. Sigh. The buffet is a bit pricey if you're vegetarian. But there is plenty for vegetarians and omnivores alike. I have not wept in ecstasy at every dish that I have tasted. But the food has all been very good, each time I went. The omnivores I had with me agreed. No one had a negative experience with any dish they tried. The teensy little desserts are just the right size, in case you forgot to leave room. Like another reviewer, I wanted to fill my pockets. I'm glad Dimassi's is in Austin, and I hope they do well. Dimassi's is the most authentic Mediterranean cuisine that I have tasted in Austin so far. I started off healthy with Lebanese salad, Tabouli salad, Greek salad, falafel, hummus, grape leaves with beef and rice and fresh hot pita bread. After consuming the healthy plate, I started in on the good stuff. Baked fish (baked in lemon and spices), lamb shank, kafta kabob (ground beef with parsley, onion and garlic), chicken kabob (marinated with oregano, green pepper and onion) fried cauliflower, seasoned potatoes with herbs and cilantro. The second plate was packed. I normally pass on the desserts but they had some baklava that I could not resist. What was also nice was that the price of the buffet included the soft drinks, coffee, ice tea (sweetened and unsweetened) and also a very nice mango-peach tea. I will definitely be back. read more

My husband and I recently moved from Houston to Austin. Which is glorious and wonderful and I couldn't be happier. HATE Houston. Anyway, I used to visit the Dimassi's in Houston near the Galleria very frequently. And I loved it. So fresh and delicious. So when I saw that there is a Dimassi's in Austin, I was VERY excited! Only to be disappointed :( Husband and I went on a week night, and I was grossed out by the food. Everything looked like it had been sitting out for hours. One of my fav dishes, the fatoush (cucumber/tomato salad), had obviously been sitting there for hours. The radishes in the dish had actually stained the cucumbers pink. UGH. The hummus tasted sour, and pita bread was stale. I guess the falafel was...okay. I had been looking forward to Dimassi's all day only to be somewhat disgusted by the food. Maybe eating there at lunch is a different story, but from now on I'll hold off on Dimassi's until I go to Houston again. read more

Everyone I know, including people who are bringing kids, enjoys eating here. Yes, it's a buffet, which is usually scary in Austin. They keep the food extremely fresh here, though, even at off-peak times. I have been pleasantly surprised at 2:00 on weekdays to see them bringout out dish after dish fresh from the kitchen. Buffets mean variety. I eat more different foods here in one meal than just about any place else. Others have expressed the same thought. It's hard to think of a place where you could get such a variety of healthy foods, if that's your goal. The food is generally plainer than you might find elsewhere. We came here the other day just as they were opening and I wanted to note how beautiful the presentation of the buffet is before people start digging in. All of the colors from the fresh food and many spices are vibrant. I've never seen such a pretty buffet, I must say. They were also pulling out fresh piping hot pita from the oven. I have control issues so I love buffets. I'm also very picky. This place has really improved since the owners bought it back from the old franchisee. If you've never been it's kind of like going to Kinkos for the first time. I mean this place really needs and instruction manual!!! First, you just walk in and dig in. You pay on the way out but sometimes you have to go hunting for the cashier first. I've been half tempted to walk out without paying. I mean I admire this level of trust I really do but geez, man the register people!!! If you know how to navigate this buffet Dimassi's is delicious. I start with a plate piled high with romaine salad add in a wilted mixed greens, mushrooms and red bell pepper salad next to a scoop of sweet yummy cole slaw. I make my own dressing by mixing tahini sauce and red wine vinegar with the Mediterranean spice blend they have in a shaker by the salads and pour it on my romaine salad. Then I grab an iced tea and proceed to pig out. I follow that with yet another plate of roasted crunchy chewy cauliflower, perfectly cooked grilled zucchini, freshly-baked-right-in-front-of-you-pita-bread hot out of the oven to make my own falafel sandwich with yet more tahini sauce and a side of curry vegetable "soup." If there ever were a vegetarian heaven this is what it would taste like. Meat lovers can make their own gyro but the ingredients are strewn about the rather large buffet so building one is a bit like going on an easter egg hunt. If you don't know how to build you're own gyro you'll never find what you're looking for. Hubby's a pro: He uses gyro meat, cucumber sauce (looks like sour cream) onions, lettuce and steals roasted tomatoes from the roasted zucchini tray. (You could also put the diced tomato cucumber salad in your gyro or falafel sandwich.) My husband says they have the best ever fried chicken in Texas. Great for kids too as they have some bland foods like this weird hamburger patty thingy that has no flavor and cubed roasted potatoes plus the fried chicken and they have baked chicken too. I would highly recommend this place! They have a variety of tasty options. If you are a fan of lamb, I would recommend going for dinner on the weekends. They bring out lamb shanks that are exquisite. The meat falls off the bone, it is so good! The hummus is creamy and very flavorful! Grilled veggies, fresh pita, soups, chicken and the list goes on and on! The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars is that they are slow to clean up the tables. I have gone a few times and find that the tables have not been cleaned up. For me, that is a minor thing. This was the worst food I've ever eaten in Austin. That's a big statement... but I honestly can't think of a worst meal. Everything I put in my mouth was pretty terrible... aside from the hummus... which I ate with stale "pita" bread. Even the small things, like rice, were terrible. The sight of lamb and beef swimming in a vat of hot red liquid made me sick to my stomach. The only edible meat was the chicken which wasn't terrible... but I can make better chicken at home. I hate to give someone a 1 star review... especially since the staff seemed so nice. But I don't want anyone spending the money to eat here. Austin lacks good Greek food... any great reviews for this place are from people who have never actually tasted REAL Greek. read more

Really great food. THE PITA BREAD IS SO SOFT AND YUMMY. Its not that pretty on the inside (minus 1 star) But the owner is very nice, and makes sure the buffet is super clean. (I watched him go around the edges 3-4 times double checking the food) There are so many choices, meats, fish. FALAFEL is crispy but soft on the inside. The baba ghanouj is really savory. I come here at least once every two weeks. Try the rose water too!! Also ask for a card they can punch so you get a free buffet after 10 visits! read more

I came here for lunch, and the salad- type food is good. The meat is questionable looking, and it's pretty standard as a buffet. The reason I will not go back is not the food. It's the signs. They are apparently intended to "reduce waste and keep costs down" but every place you look- forks, dessert, buffet line- there's a sign reminding you not to take too much food. Clearly, the management has decided that if you have chosen to eat at a buffet, you are an ugly, fat American ready to stuff your face beyond all reason. Even taking one of their tiny desserts is a trap- there's a sign -paraphrase- that reads:"only take these if you can fit it in your bloated face. Don't take them home or we'll catch you and charge you a dollar." Unfortunately, a buffet is all you can eat, and people will eat. Scolding them for doing so is such a self-sabotage, no? The place is cavernous and undecorated - not suitable for a first date, but it's impeccably clean. The name is unfortunate too. It sounds Italian. I'm sure many people drive by thinking it's a clone of the dire Cici's Pizza chain or such. On the other hand, it's veggie heaven. Wife and I thoroughly enjoyed dinner. We I arrived late and expected dregs, but got plenty of food and reasonably fresh too. Highlights = hummus and baba ghanouj, the surprising roast cauliflower which is apparently a specialty, the gyros, the roast eggplant. I've had my share of falafel in my life and theirs is among the best. Flavors indeed a bit toned down for the untrained American palate, but thoughtfully so. Everything about as well done as you can expect at a buffet. I found it hard to stop. Look for the baklava, too. It is a revelation. read more

We tried the buffet for the first time today. It was excellent. All of the vegetables were wonderful, tasty, fresh. Homemade pita in a wood burning oven, salads fresh and abundant! Desserts - killer. I really haven't had great Greek food until today. Go there! You will not be sorry. read more
