I went to Dimassis a couple months ago during lunch. I can't say that I was impressed at all. Sterile environment is a pretty good term to use to describe Dimassis. It was really quiet, which was a little off-putting. The food itself is just plain bad. I doubt any of it is actually homemade - if it is, I would be shocked. Maybe my standards for Mediterranean food are too high, but this stuff was not so good. Granted, my selection at this place is slightly limited because I am a vegetarian. But the items I did have were just not so good. Is there good Mediterranean food in Austin???????? I have yet to find one that compares to El Basha's in Worcester, MA. read more

I've been to a Dimassi's in The Woodlands several times, and it is a completely different experience from this one. Granted, I went on a Sunday night when business was really slow and they probably didn't feel like refilling all of the chafing dishes on a regular basis. The decor inside leaves much to be desired. It's in an older building and someone who loves the color khaki must have chosen the color scheme. As far as the buffet goes, it's a great place for a vegetarian. All of the veggie dishes I tried were great. The tabouli, Lebanese salad and cabbage salad were easily my favorites, and I am a sworn carnivore. I could just eat those three things and the rice pilaf for every meal. Most of the meat I had didn't leave much of an impression. The kafta kabob tasted like it had been sitting out for a little too long. Might have tasted better fresh, but it's a buffet so the standards are lower, I guess. The baked fish was good. I put garlic sauce on it (I call it the Mediterranean version of wasabi.) The chicken kabobs were pretty dry but it had a good flavor...kind of mustard-y. I'd have to say the best meat was the beef shanks. They were tender and cooked well. Bottom line: Go to a Dimassi's in Houston (they have lamb!). The one good thing I can say for this place is the variety, so you did get to try a lot of things. It's a cheap way to try different dishes. The problem I had was that it was all average quality. Nothing really stood out as being "Wow, this is good!" to me. Some of the food had been sitting out too long and a lot of it was greasy. To be fair, some of that comes from a buffet restaurant. Heading to north Austin is always a little easier thanks to Dimassi's. Hands down the best middle eastern food in central Tx! The food is always fresh and delicious. My favorites are the baba, dolmas, fattoush and of course the Lamb. YUM! The place is clean, the service is great and we leave feeling full and like we've eaten a mostly healthy meal! I was SO sad when the Dimassi's down south closed but at least I have a delicious reason to drive north! read more

We were invited last Sunday by some friends for dinner. Right from the beginning no one welcomed us or even acknowledged us... After 5 minutes of standing we just picked a somewhat clean table ourselves and sat down; eventually someone brought over drinks while we were looking at the buffet selection. I tried a bit of everything and with the exception of the salads and hummus I musty admit I was not impressed. Food was super bland and overcooked. Meats were tough except for the lamb. Ive eaten here 3 times and I really enjoy the food. The hummus is good, and all the different salads are very tasty. Warm, fresh pita tops it off for me. Today I saw that they added tandoori chicken, and it wasn't so tasty, but the kabobs are usually good. ALthough the fish fillets look greasy, drain them off with the spatula and try them anyway. They are awesomely spiced. I am also a big fan of the cauliflower and the lemon roasted potatoes. Though Mediterranean isn't my first choice, Dimassi's was excellent food. The price for the buffet was VERY reasonable and they had a huge assortment of different meats, vice, veggies and desserts. Even had some grub for the exceptionally picky folks who are there for the company and not authentic the food (fried chicken and french fries). It's all self service aside from someone coming around at random to take away empty plates. Be prepared to not only fix your plate, but fill and refill your drinks as well as get napkins/silverware for your table. The thought of a Mediterranean buffet made me really happy. It's some of my favorite food in the world!! So when I saw a Groupon for it, I snatched two up right quick. I'd heard of the place before-- just never realized it was a buffet. We went on the last night at 8:00pm (it says they close at 9pm). Plates full, I stood near the kitchen waiting to spot someone to fill up the pita bread (which they appear to bake in house, in a brick oven). When I asked about it, they said they were ALL DONE MAKING IT FOR THE NIGHT! An hour before closing??? Super disappointing! I often judge a place first on how good the pita is... and to find out pita will be nonexistent for the meal is just a real drag. :( :( :( It's pretty much essential for Mediterranean food. So we get a basket of some leftover toasted pita ends (which seemed straight from a box) and dealt with it. The hummus was ehhh. The baba ghanouj was pretty good. The grape leaves tasted straight from a can. The kofta was SUPER dry (inedible). Tabbouleh was decent. There were some spicy-ish meatballs that were pretty yummy. Can't complain about the felafel- that was really crunchy and tasty. The green beans and okra in sauce were good. The cauliflower was super salty and overseasoned. Gyro meat was good. And there was some baked fish in a sauce that looked really inviting... I went up and got a piece when a fresh tray had just come out (because they kept refilling everything BUT pita..) The fish was majorly overdone, but I guess what's to be expected at a buffet/ under a heat lamp? As for dessert, the baklava was soggy and all of the desserts seemed store- bought. There was a pink coconut halwa dessert on the buffet line that was delicious though.. All in all, totally meh experience. I'd truly give it 2.5 stars but i feel like 2 is too low. I love Mediterranean food so much, it would almost be worth it to go back and see if the food is better on another day (or maybe earlier in the day, aroundtime lunchtime? At least they'd have pita then!) I am really glad I had a Groupon because, if I'd paid $13-15 for dinner without one, I'd definitely feel ripped off. read more

The food is consistently delicious. The owner is sweet and responsive. Everyone I. My family loves it, even my baby. We only eat the vegan food, which is plentiful and clearly labeled. We love the falafel, lentil soup, hummus, roasted veggies and tons more. We go at least once a week, and my sons begs for it! read more

We have been there about 7 times since it has opened and the food has always been fresh and tasty with quite a variety. I can understand that some people may not like the atmosphere as it is nothing special, but I don't expect a buffet style restaurant to be that way. I am not sure why some people are complaining about the food as it is great quality for a buffet, and again, the large variety is very nice. The people who work there have always been friendly but I do agree that a more appropriate greeting is probably in order. We have been enough times that they know us so we just walk up, pay, grab a table and then go through the buffet. But greeting customers with a "Welcome to our restaurant" and then asking "Have you have been in before?" would be a great thing for them to do instead of just asking how many and then giving a price, but hopefully they will start doing that if they read these reviews or perhaps someone will suggest it to them. Again, we like it and will go back often and I even suggested it as a place for our car club to have a dinner so hopefully everyone in the club will like it too. read more

I'm not usually a fan of buffets because it usually means a lesser quality in exchange for the quantity they need to turn out. I've been to Dimassi's for lunch and dinner both during the week and on weekends; they are always very consistent with their quality and available quantity. Very relaxed atmosphere, pick a seat and hit the buffet. I like that there are a lot of naturally gluten free options available. The food is a mixture of types of food, a vegetarian, Celiac or meat-obsessive will find plenty of great options. For the quality and variety of food, the price is great! When I lived in Houston, I frequented Dimassi's and my experiences were generally positive. Now, we finally have another Middle Eastern cuisine option in Austin! Dimassi's here is set-up a bit different here than in Houston, however - here's it's completely buffet style with one flat charge. In Houston, it cafeteria style and you pay for what you want. It's arguable what's more cost effective, but I'm not sold on the buffet model for this type of food (yet). I've only been to Dimassi's in Austin once so far and I thought the selection of items was phenomenal - there is a hot and cold line of dishes with a great deal of variety. The highlights for me were the fish, chicken, baba ganouj, and many of the salads. However, the atmosphere and setting was OK - it felt a bit like a Mediterranean Luby's. It was not warm and inviting. Also, I think the price point is a bit on the steep side - an even ten bucks would be a fairer price. I will most likely go again, but I'm not sure I will frequent as often as I did in Houston just yet. read more

Other than having a smattering of Mediterranean food at various events, this is the only Mediterranean Buffet/restaurant I've been to. So, my review is based on the experience here and is not a comparison to other Mediterranean places. I've been here twice with my vegetarian friend. Between the two of use we've sampled just about everything. Click on the above link for the menu, everything = a lot. She loves all the non meat offerings and I love everything. Stuffed grape leaves, meatballs, chicken, lamb, hummus, rice pudding, salads, vegetables (some fried, most sauteed) etc., etc., it was all delicious. I also love bread but try not to fill up on it. Both of my visits included, fresh from the oven pita, it was very hard to not stuff each bit of food in a piece of hot fresh bread. I've been to several Austin buffets, this is the only one that's constantly refreshing the food. No atmosphere has been mentioned in a few reviews. I agree but this place is for serious eating not for romantic dates. My only other petty gripe would be the dessert - not many choices, good but not up to par with the rest of the food offerings. I have no idea how anyone can complain about the price. $12 for all you can eat, including soft drinks, hot tea and coffee and some dessert, if you still have room, is a fantastic bargain. Additionally, Dimassi's is 100% self-serve which means no tipping required. Walk in, pick a table and go crazy. read more

It's a lowbrow buffet in a strip center, but if you can get past that, this is really a great place to eat! The hummus, the pita bread fresh out of the oven.... I don't even know what to pick as my favorite... Every time I go there I eat until I hurt myself, but it's soooo worth it. Unlike most buffets, they don't really have a greeter; so just go in, fix yourself a plate and sit wherever you like. Drinks are included. Pay on your way out. Definitely impressed. The oven-baked chicken here is simply heaven; it falls off the bone and is a perfect blend of tender succulence and savory -- a touch of spices, a curl of carmelized onion, and bliss. It looks a bit like tandoori; not sure of the name. There are many other standouts, like the baby okra in some kind of tomato broth -- oh wow, so sublime, and smooth as silk. My friend (who has traveled extensively in the Middle East and cooks her own baba ganoush) was floored by their baba and hummous. I found them tasty if different (creamy, almost like sour cream; I like mine more garlicky and heavy). And of course dolma (!) and baklava (!). Neither of them was exceptional, but hey, it's a buffet. Surprised that this doesn't get more love. I'm picky but this was totally worth it. There were really no sour notes on the whole buffet, so I gotta give it 5. Also, it seems like people are picking at it for some fairly arbitrary or personal reasons. read more

Lots of interesting dishes, all of it tasty, and the prices were reasonable, especially considering the up-front price includes a drink. Lots of variety for both the veggie and the meat eater. I wasn't even sure what Mediterranean food was until I came here, but I found a lot to like. Unfortunately, one of the employee's family kept following us around with their extremely loud kids. I'm assuming they were employee family since kid and mom alike kept going back into the back. We even changed tables, and they changed to be nearer to us, even though they were not eating and there was only one other group of customers! I'm sure there was some reason other than trolling us, but still, annoying and headache inducing. I went for lunch with a coworker. Neither of us have been to Dimassi's and there aren't too many buffets in North West Austin so we decided to give it a try. We paid 10.81 after tax each for the buffet and looked at the food while we looked for a table. Everything looked pretty good and there is a good variety of different foods. We sat down at a wall table and prepared to hit the buffet. There's a good variety of mediterranean foods as well as other foods for people who may not want to be adventurous. Nothing was 'omg gross spit it out' worthy, and a few items were mm this is tasty. However, I never ate something that made me go "WOW! I DEFINITELY GOTTA GET ME MORE OF THIS". And because of that I give the food a 3.5, better than good but not great. I got two sodas from their soda machine, and they both tasted like soda water. After that I decided I would be better getting tea. My coworker got coke and said it tasted fine so I guess the soda is hit or miss? or 2 stars. The place recently took down the "Now Open" banners that gave the impression that the place is new. It doesn't look new, it looks like a restaurant that's been around for a while without any attempt to upgrade the looks. Which just quite alright with me, I didn't come looking for remarkable decor and art work every where. 3 stars. Overall, Dimassi's is a great place to go if you just want a big variety and want to know that everything tastes good and won't make you gag. Pros: The variety is good and the food is on the better side of mediocre. If you've been curious about trying some different Mediterranean dishes before, for $12 you get a drink and unlimited trips to the buffet bar: so you can try new things and go back to your old faves if you don't like them. If you want decent food and zero interaction with waitstaff, this is the place for you. When I say zero interaction, I mean it. We walked in and just sort of stood there for a moment. The owner or manager (not sure), who had been outside smoking, stepped in and told us to seat ourselves. We sat down and after after a few minutes of looking around realized there would be no waitress coming by to take our drink order because this place is truly self service! After we got our drinks and silverware, we hit the buffet. The lamb shanks were fabulous...totally falling off the bones. And the fried cauliflower was delicious! All the food was very good and the fresh baklava for dessert made us all wish we'd left more room for it! My only real complaint was that empty plates were cleared by a busboy who pushed his cart to the table and dumped scraps into the garbage bin on his cart right there at the table while we were still eating. By far one of the most amazing buffets I have ever been to in my life. I used to come here more often - years ago, but it had been a while since, and I couldn't recall if my last experience was anything special. Today I went with someone who had never been, and we were both blown away by the selection, quality and flavor. Everything is fresh. Everything tastes amazing. It's so much food at such a great price - I could eat there everyday (but would promptly need to start walking there, as I'd overeat all the deliciousness every time). The fried cauliflower, dolmas, all the sauces (and the babaganouj!), lamb shank, fried chicken, chicken kebab, fresh pita bread, and baklava were all something super special. Everything I ate was amazing, and the people kept the buffet clean and stocked and were kind, but not over-present, which I really liked. I was very disappointed in the lack-luster food and the sterile conditions. We arrived at 5pm for an early dinner as my wife had a class at 6pm nearby. The restaurant was almost completely empty and most of the food trays in the buffet line were either empty or over-cooked. The hummus, one of the few things positively reviewed on yelp was down to scrapings and remained so throughout our visit. There was a fish with mustard dish that both my wife and I found to have the consistency of dry chicken breast rather than any fish we had eaten. I really hope it was chicken. Dry rice, mushy lamb, greasy everything else and a very disappointing dessert selection. Well, aside from the food, the atmosphere is dreadful. I don't mind the cafeteria decor, but a little music could go a long way to making you feel like you're at a restaurant. Honestly, since this seems to be a relatively successful chain, I am very surprised at the very low quality. I hope they can improve it soon. read more

But here, I get a little bit of everything and it is always good. I am especially fond of the roasted cauliflower and grilled veggies. They have a number of vegan/vegetarian options, with an equal number of hot and cold selections. I went to this place on the recommendation of a friend of a friend. I pass it on a regular basis so one evening I decided to give it a try. I was surprised that there were so many 4 and 5 star reviews on Yelp for this place. It wasn't bad by any means, but it was just so bland. I tried almost everything on the buffet, and found most of the food to be lacking in flavor. Maybe I am just not super familiar with Mediterranean food in general, or maybe I caught them on an off night. There were a number of other people in the restaurant, so clearly people were enjoying SOMETHING on the buffet. I thought the gyro meat was good and the falafel was okay. The pitas were fresh and hot, although as someone else noted, they were very thick. Everything else was just meh. The friend I was with complained the next day of digestive issues but I didn't have any problems. I don't regret going but I'm not sure I will go back or recommend this place to a friend. DiMassi's is a piece of work. The founders gutted a strip mall Mexican restaurant and created something infinitely worse. The food was revoltingly bland (think hospital food), the decor was stark and resembled a Syrian prison hall. This place is for people who like high-school cafeteria type ambiance with some extra filth thrown in (the floors were downright disgusting). I found it cheap, depressing with food to match. I could imagine galley slaves in the back stirring pots of insipid, low-seasoning hummus with broomsticks. The cabbage leaves stank of sulfur and were filled with hard chewy rice. The chicken was fatty. The fruits looked like a three year old had chopped them. The lamb was abysmal. If you're wanting Mediterranean food, do yourself a favor and go to Phoenicia Deli or Sarah's and stay away from the DiMassi's "experience". NEVER again. Should have listened to those who wrote a bad review. The restaurant, if you can call it that, looks more like a cafeteria, has no decor at all. One would expect some mediterranean decor, but there is nothing. The food is plenty, but disappointing. I've been to middle eastern/mediterranean buffets before and they were wonderful. The eggplant was disgusting, the "greek salad" was really not bery Greek, the spinach was horrible and the baclava could have been good hadn't it been so dry. The only things that were OK were the different kinds of rice. The price is quite low, but I would rather pay more and have good food. Not going back. read more
