First things first, this review is based almost entirely on the service and dining atmosphere. The food is very good. However, you can good food and great service elsewhere so let's dive in shall we? Two friends and I went to Dimes for brunch recently. We'd eaten at the old location before but were eager to check out the new space. We were seated with no problems--the difficulties arose when we tried to order. I was the first to order. The waitress, by the way, was trying to memorize the order and writing nothing down. I asked for the breakfast sandwich with one caveat. The sandwich includes avocado which I am deathly allergic to. As such, I asked if I could substitute bacon for the avocado. I didn't really expect them to let me but since the avocado was functioning as the protein in this situation I thought I'd try. The waitress confirmed that, no, I could not sub bacon for avocado. So, I asked for bacon anyway and told her she could leave the avocado on the side as I was sure someone at the table would eat it. The waitress proceeded to tell me that I could not put the avocado on the side because then it would become a SIDE of avocado..... Just let that B.S. sink in for a minute. I pointed out to her that avocado is included IN THE SANDWICH and why would I need to pay extra for the kitchen to just plunk it down on the plate as opposed to on my sandwich. The waitress just repeated that it would cost extra. Frustrated, I just told her to scrap the avocado altogether. She took my friends' orders then attempted to repeat the order back to us. She got at least four things wrong including saying that I had ordered a side of avocado. I corrected her and she left. The order came and guess what. There was a damn side of avocado on a plate next to my sandwich. I called the waitress back over and asked if we were being charged for it, she said yes because I ordered a side of avocado. (Forehead slap) I had her take it away assuring her we would not be paying for it. Exhausted yet? It gets worse. At this point I had been extremely polite and my friends and I went along happily eating our brunch. Suddenly the manager appears at our table. Thinking she was going to apologize for the mistakes with our order I smiled and introduced myself. She opened with, "I heard there may have been a misunderstanding here. Did you order something and send it back." EXXXXCUSE ME. I recounted the whole story for the manager thinking she'd see that the miscommunication was not on our parts. However, she became increasingly haughty and hostile. She said to me, "Maybe next time you should try to communicate your problems better. The waitress considers this a hostile table now and she is not comfortable coming over." Our jaws were on the floor. Not once had we raised our voices, not once had we been rude. What the actual Fuck was going on? The waitress never came back over to our table--instead she sent another girl over with our bill--in case, I don't know, we planned to bite her or something. The manager spent the rest of the time we were there glaring at us and not so subtly whispering about us to other employees. To have the manager of a restaurant come out and actually berate a customer for the mistakes of her inexperienced and thin-skinned waitress is beyond my comprehension. Especially when said customers worked out the problem on their own and had been sitting quietly eating their brunch in peace. I have never encountered such blatant disregard for customer satisfaction. There's no way in hell you could drag me back to Dimes. You'll notice many of the low reviews on Yelp are for service, now you know why. read more

To all brunch lovers out there DIMES is not totally not the dime piece you guys want to encounter. This review is during a Monday morning visit Interior: This place probably would receive its only star when it comes to the environment, this is a match made for instagrammers that are obsessed with the minimal look, so I guess you should come here for a glass of filtered water and snap some aesthetics before walking out. I mean the pink, blue and white tables makes the mood shine bright. Food: The mood did not shine bright with the food at all, my friend ordered a Peachy Toast and on a Monday morning(11am), they didn't have any. How could you possibly not stock up before a Monday morning? My friend was a bit bummed out to hear that, but she did settle for the love toast, assuming it was good. On the other hand, I had the black ride bowl where I did pay extra for salmon and don't get me started, salmon for brunch sounds amazing but this salmon was atrocious and super sour for my tastebuds, everything else in the bowl was dry and the only thing worth eating were the fried egg and black rice. With that being said, I wasn't pleased seeing a strand of hair in my bowl as that ruined my appetite. Totally not the best $20 I spent where I can go to a chain restaurant and binge eat all I want. Service: Usually when you go to a restaurant, you would expect a greeter at the front door, it took a good minute for us to be noticed so that was lame, in addition we noticed other customers waiting forever to get their order in. The waitresses looked clueless and it took 5-10 minutes to receive our shit. So not coming back. Able to get a walk-in seat for 4 on a Sunday morning; as we left, people waiting had been told "15-20mins", but it 45 mins had passed...? Staff was friendly and helpful. We ordered the breakfast sandwich, kedgeree, huevo kathmandu, and patty plate. The sandwich and patty plate scored big points for flavor, whereas the kedgeree and kathmandu were "just ok", lacking a bit in flavor. Portions sizes felt on the smaller side for the price. Wow. After reading the numerous bad reviews regarding the service on Yelp, I decided to take it with a grain of salt and take my family out for a rare night out. I don't think I have ever been more embarrassed suggesting a place to eat in my life. Having an early dinner we (table of five) were only the second table in the restaurant at the time. Even before we were seated, we literally felt unwanted by the staff. I tried to rescue the table's mood but with each interaction with our waitress (getting menus, ordering drinks, ordering our meal, asking questions about the food, etc), I could not cover up for the complete lack of interest or professionalism of our server. If it was at all possible, she actually made me feel guilty for wanting to eat there. We generally tip quite generously as I, like many others around the world, have worked in service and understand the importance of tipping but for the first time in my life, I voted to leave zero tip. If you're working that close to your guests you should probably refrain from loudly scolding your co-workers and also should be quicker to the draw when it comes to simple things like water and the check. I apparently was served someone else's dish, as she rudely ripped it out from in front of me without saying a word before, during, or after. To top it off she delivered my check without a simple thank you or a smile or even a touch of eye contact. The place looks to be about the same size as my studio apartment and the tables are on top of each other. That's pretty standard of a place like this in this area. But it is an American brunch place right in China town! I was a bit confused myself. My party of 3 waited about 25ish minutes for a table for three and I'm not sure the food was worth it completely. Food: Strawberry Acai Yogurt - this was very watery and seemed very heavy on the granola. I've never had Strawberry Acai Yogurt before, so not sure if it's the normal consistency BLT - the BLT was probably the best item we got but wasn't anything exceptional and was relatively small. The bacon was very crispy. Breakfast sandwich - mediocre - I was very disappointed with this! It didn't have much flavor - I was really hoping the dimes hot sauce would be more tasty, but it really didn't add anything. I think this is a good place to try, but not a place to be a regular at. For a while now, I had wanted to check out Dimes due to the endless beautiful pictures on Instagram and Yelp. Their acai bowls looked legit and the food reminded me of health-centric food spots in SoCal. Decided to come out of my way to finally give it a try. The space is pretty small, even though it's much bigger than their original location! Tables are crammed together so do not expect any sort of privacy. Luckily for us, there was no wait at 2:30 on a Thursday afternoon and we opted for a more spacious, orange colored table. Ordered the Moroccan poached eggs with avocado, spring salad, and the mango pitaya bowl. The eggs were delicious, especially because they were accompanied by warm melting haloumi cheese. The spring salad was pretty good but didn't seem fresh. The apples on top had browned quite a bit - underwhelming for 13 bucks. The mango pitaya bowl was good - better than a lot of other bowls I've had in the city! However, they sprinkled some stuff on the top that had an odd stale flavor to it. I'm sure it was some kind of healthy super food I'm not aware of, but they can do away with it. What irks me the most about this place is its staff. I don't mean to be rude, but why does it look like no one took a shower? And there was a strong odor of BO the whole time I was there - I know some people don't believe in deodorant but it's hard to enjoy my food when the natural unpleasant odors of others keep trying to grab my attention. Our waiter was pretty weird, he would ask us questions while giving us these soul searching stares. Definitely seemed like someone smoked a bit too much before work. Also, he had dirty fingernails - gross. Maybe this is the vibe they are trying to achieve but it's a restaurant after all - cleanliness and hygiene should be a given. What's the point of being served supposedly fresh healthy food by people who are in desperate need of a bath and maybe some vitamins. So all in all, I didn't love eating at Dimes and wouldn't recommend it. Btw, I'm about 5'6", so if you're taller than me, you'd be even more uncomfortably squished into Dimes. To top it all off, there's no reservations, so we had to wait for this experience. I know you're reading this review mostly for food so here's what we ordered. Love this trendy little place and their creative dishes. They have many healthy and light options too. My boyfriend and I shared the peachy toast and the chia pudding for a quick lunch (yes these items were on the breakfast menu but they were too good to pass on at 2pm). The toast features lavender goat cheese on a slice of bread, topped with honey and crunchy, thinly sliced peaches. The salty and creamy cheese paired surprisingly well with the crunchy peach slices and the honey was the perfect element that tied it all together, keeping the toast a light and sweet treat. The chia pudding was creamy and lightly sweetened, with fresh raspberries, pomegranate, almonds, and bananas. It was my first time having it and I enjoyed it, but I personally prefer acai bowls over chia pudding. They also have pitaya and acai bowls that I would love to come back and try. I'm also looking forward to trying the love toast or some of their salads and entrees on my next visit! The interior gets a lot of natural light and it's a nice spot to catch up with friends since it's such a bustling and chill restaurant. Keep in mind that it is popular spot though -- when I went for lunch, it was 2pm on a Monday and people were still waiting. It has a clean, minimal white interior, beautiful, healthy food (e.g. acai bowls and perfectly layered granola), and equally beautiful people who eat there. But it doesn't quite live up to the hype. My friend and I grabbed brunch here a few weeks (or was it months?) ago, and I was underwhelmed by the overall experience. The acoustics are horrible (it's hard to have a conversation without yelling), service is mediocre, and the food takes forever to come out. We probably waited around 25-30 minutes for my acai bowl and her tuna wrap. Sadly, the food was just average. My lavender acai bowl was nothing to write home about. The verdict? Really can't complain about my dinner here. It's called Dimes because all their customers are 10s. But the crowd kind of makes me want to throw hamburgers next time I'm drunk in the hood. Back to my actual experience.. I got the spiced quinoa. The place was too dark for me to actually see my food. If there were a bug or whatever in my food I probably wouldn't have been able to tell. But I liked the dish a lot. Dressing was automatically served on the side. I topped the bowl with pickled salmon which was nicely poached and very moist. I tried my friend's striped bass in green curry which was delicious as well. Drinks were decent too. I recommend Gift of Summer. This place serves healthy food done right. Many people hate on it because of the crowd I guess. That's why you should go at dinner when it becomes too dark for you to see anything or anyone. This restaurant has clean lines and minimal decor. The vibe is trendy. I took away a star because my friend and I both had dirty coffee cups and the servers were not friendly. I got the quinoa salad and it was fantastic. The roasted red bell pepper added such great flavor to the asparagus and quinoa. I find the professional breakfast to be a particularly harsh form of punishment, for it's difficult to be presentable in the best of circumstances before 9 a.m., but having to do without eating anything first is neigh impossible. Now my meal at Dimes was only an internal get together, with a very nice person in town from London, but it still meant that certain things about the meal seemed magnified because of the hour. We'll start with the extremely cold temperature, not helped by a swinging door which let air in without any protection whenever a new customer arrived. Nearly every patron was wearing their coat at the table, many (myself included) with a hat as well. There was also our waiter, who I believe might sleep in some of colony located on another astral plane. He wore a sweater with several lovingly sewed patches in places with one dangling chain of an earning and serene expression that only comes from a serious amount of meditation. We eventually made our way through the menu, a bewildering list of bowls and plates scattered with ingredients I associate more with clothing than edible food. My co-worker wound up with a bowl of strawberries, chia seed, some grain with hemp scattered on top. She gave up after a few bites. The neurotic New Yorker and the excited Londoner aren't probably the best audience for this very Los Angeles of restaurants, but my entree of olives, feta, eggs, bulgur wheat, spinach and cilantro hit the healthful, flavorful mark. It was satisfying breakfast food without the grease of dinner classics. It's weird and definitely not the typical scene, but it's open for breakfast and downtown at 9 a.m. and a pretty satisfying option. read more

I'm a bit surprised to see a 3.5 star rating but agree with most reviews. It's a bit unfortunate that they moved to a still small and uncomfortable space. It's almost like the lesson was not learned. So much of the dining experience is the environment (decor, space, etc) at least on my end. I really want to give 3.5 stars but Yelp won't allow that so since it's the New Year I'll round up lol. My two friends and I ate Sunday dinner here. No reservations which was fine because we came at 6pm. The space is really not meant for parties more than 2 people unless you are a group of 4-6 then you get a booth but 3 people is and was an incredibly bizarre seating arrangement. So we were not allowed to combine two 2 person tables (fine, I get it) so we sat at a corner table side by side like sardines. It was very comical. It was not too uncomfortable just weird and annoying when one of us had to go to the bathroom, it was like musical chairs. IT WAS FREEZING, yes we were sitting against the window but omg so cold. One friend was wearing her jacket. They need to get heat and/or insulation because winter has barely begun in NYC. *** So space and temperature is where 1.5 stars gets knocked off *** The menu is actually very nice and diverse, it's really healthy and light. We opted to share everything which worked out well, would've been better if we had a normal table but whatever. We ordered the following: 1. stuffed dates- This is really nice, it's 4 dates stuffed with cous cous. It's only $5 so a nice little starter. The cous cous balances the sweetness of the dates. 2. Mezze- This was interesting, probably would not order it again and opt for a salad but interesting combination of food. There was an eggplant spread, pomegranate, grapefruit, olives and mushrooms served with a few crostinis. 3. Black rice- This was probably my favorite, it was really unique and has an Asian feel (I think a lot of the menu is Asian inspired). It's black rice, squash puree, mushrooms, cucumber, kale and seaweed. Very interesting and eclectic mix. 4. Striped bass- I wasn't a big fan but only for the reason this is a bit spicy. It tastes very Thai inspired with the lemongrass. Relatively good size fish and portion. If spicy does not bother you than you will probably enjoy. 5. Carrot cake- I actually never crave carrot cake so when this stood out on the menu I knew I had to order. It's really good and light. I was expecting something a bit different like a layered cake but this is more flat. Really yummy and not too sweet. 5. Chocolate pot de creme- I was not a big fan. It's kinda of weird flavoring because it's a bit bitter but has a good amount of cardamon seasoning which tasted a bit odd. My friend loved this. I think it should be a tiny bit sweeter. Overall, it's good, light and healthy food. The cocktails looked nice and the bartender is very cute (brunette lol). It's really just the space that was very frustrating. I came here for dinner with a friend on an August Tues night and we were promptly seated. The vibe is chill, trendy, 30-something's. Wine selection was good, I enjoyed a rosé and my friend had a glass of red. Food was good, service was too and everything came out in a reasonable amount of time. We both had the vegan quinoa salad and enjoyed it - although if you're really hungry you may need to add an appetizer. The biggest issue we had was noise. Once every table in the place was full it was very difficult to hear each other and we were only 1ft away + we were lucky enough to be in a corner. And forget hearing the waitresses recommendations - I just smiled and nodded. Overall everything was good. Not great. Not quite enticing enough to return but please don't read that as negative. Dimes isn't new, they opened up in 2013, but they recently moved into a bigger space, which has been getting them a lot of attention. Probably because now, more people can join in the restaurant to get their healthy, yet still delicious fix. So, I was off to scope out the new digs at their Chinatown location. Ok, so, remember how I said they were expanding into a bigger space? Well, it's still pretty cozy, but, this is New York, so, we're all pretty used to smaller spaces. However, the amount of appeal from their menu is huge. I wanted to order about half of all the items on the menu, but I zoned in on a dish for my main. I ordered the Striped Bass (green curry, salmon roe, baby corn, patty pan squash). So. This was incredible. The only negative thing I can say about this dish, was that there wasn't three times the amount of it for me to eat. It was so incredibly delicious, as well as beautifully plated. The vibrancy of colors immediately lures you in, and then the flavors win you over. The fish has a light and crisp skin, and underneath it's perfectly tender and flaky. The green curry sauce was killer, it had a kick of heat, and if I could order a bowl of that as soup, it'd eat it all the time in the winter to keep me warm. This is one of those restaurants that I wanna love so badly, and when I come here I try to be positive and overlook the cons. The food is awesome, I'll give them that. I've tried their different sandwiches and each time they arrived savory and delicious. Location is also a plus, in the lower east side surrounded by all this culture and conveniently located. Now my gripe is mostly about the atmosphere. Came here on a busy day during lunch time and this place was jam packed, people were waiting in the front, out the door, standing around. When we finally got the table, I felt like I was sitting less than six inches away from the table next to me and I could hear their entire conversation better than my own. Yikes! Pricing is fair for what they serve if you're considering NYC standards ($10-$15 for a pretty small sandwich), but come on guys we're the lower east side! Maybe bring it down a notch. I came here a few weeks ago with a girl friend for brunch. It's a very clean eating kind of brunch, not the post-drinking morning smorgasbourg you usually associate with brunch. You could come here post-gym and not feel like you're un-doing everything. The inside is very weird. Disjointed in a way where you don't ever really feel comfortable. Everything is mismatched obviously intentional, but it ends up making you feel a little mismatched inside. The brunch options are very interesting and tasty! I had the kedegree, with smoked trout, pouched egg, curry basmati rice, parsnip hash and pomegranate. Not the most filling, but enough to get me going. Unfriendly staff, constantly texting at the bar, not exactly the best service. No greetings as such; hello, thank you etc. In an industry and city with a lot of restaurants service really does matter, memories of chipper, friendly enthusiastic servers in the smaller cafe before it was to go are but a distant memory. Food- ciao bowl. Mediocre and that's being kind it didn't really seem to know what it wanted to be. Sounded delicious but with half of it hot and the other half cold my mouth and mind weren't exactly pining for more. Sure acai bowls and chia are all wonderful but something that can be recreated at home. Ambiance- I felt like leaving immediately as I sat with too loud music, unfriendly staff & sitting on top of eachother patrons. It is not a dining experience I ever want to experience again. I had a juice of the day for 5$ and a breakfast sandwich with egg and jalapeños for 8$. Both tasted really good. BUT. The service might be the worst I've EVER experienced. Two couples and one single guy walked in a good 5-10 minutes after me and got their food first. After my complaints the waitresses started GRINNING at each other, as if they enjoyed my anger. Really great flavors and nice, chill vibe for dinner. Great music, VERY hipster staff, and delicious menu selections. The cocktail was meh, but the food definitely lived up to expectations. Would definitely come back. read more
