The wheatgrass margarita is delicious. That alone is reason enough to check out the new Dimes on Canal. From probiotic breakfast and brunch items to anti-inflammatory lunch and dinner plates, Dimes is a health hipster's paradise. It's also very likely the most Instagrammable restaurant in all of New York City. But more importantly, for anyone that gives a damn about what they put in their body - a movement that's becoming more ubiquitous these days - Dimes is something that needs to be on your short list of downtown dining options. I went for brunch. Due to the overwhelming amount of beautiful food photos located all over Yelp and other social media channels, I felt like I already knew their menu front to back. Their breakfast bowls are works of art. The pickled salmon plate is perfectly curated - the pink of the flesh pops in contrast to the accompanying slices of fresh cucumber. And their salads feature shades of green I didn't know existed. But despite these museum quality meals, I went with their eggs any style with side salad and seven grain toast. Call me boring, but acai rarely does it for me. However, even the most basic of breakfast staples are done exceptionally well here. Bacon and eggs are no exception. My only criticism is the noise level. I swear I'm no "get off my lawn" type, but the acoustics (or lack thereof) are quite noticeable. It's a hip room any millennial can feel at home in, but if they had something to soften the sound waves bouncing off of their white-walled conclave, it'd make for a far more enjoyable experience. Seeing it on Instagram, the spot and its food looked beautiful, which basically meant that I went out of my way to pay this cute looking cafe a visit. I'm not one to write bad reviews - I want to give people the opportunity to try places for themselves as well, but I just gotta put this out because I did not enjoy my experience there at all. First impressions were great - just like I saw in the pictures, place had colorful, bright tables and enough sunlight that made it look really cute! Then came the service.. the waiter was just downright rude, and gave the impression that he didn't care.. no smiles, nothing. Moving on, the food. I got the lavender acai bowl, and I would honestly rather go through the hassle to buy a blender and import acai berries myself than to have that again. Underwhelmed. I'm right in their target demo, but I didn't enjoy Dimes -- the hype was huge and I ended up disappointed. Yes, everyone in here looks like they just stepped out of an advertisement for a French pilates class, and the menu has cutesy-healthy-California food with some creative flourishes, but food that's good for you can taste delicious, and I didn't find that here. It's also uncomfortably tiny, so if your girth is a little more substantial, you might have an embarrassing time here. I'd 10x rather walk up to El Rey Coffee and Luncheonette, where the food has the same concept but better execution. The flavors here lacked brightness and complexity, and the portions were teensy. The stuffed dates everyone loved? I don't get it! Why would I eat this date stuffed with tasteless quinoa and smothered in olive oil when I could have a delicious bacon-wrapped date instead? Similarly, the lamb meatballs tasted like bad catering food, with a bland tomato sauce that didn't lend much help to the tastes-like-frozen meatballs. The grainy/salad dishes are also generally tasteless, and I cannot for the life of me understand how they managed to take so much flavor out of a link of lamb merguez (a delicious, savory sausage that almost never disappoints me!). It wouldn't kill them to up the savory/spice factor a little bit. This was an incredibly blah meal (though the one thing I did like was the cocktails! These were well-executed). After reading other reviews on Dimes I feel torn because I did not have the same experience the other customers/yelpers had at Dimes. I went to Dimes for a brunch/lunch and was not disappointed. The interior of the restaurant was one of my favorite aspects of Dimes. It was accented with different colors that reminded me of the 70s or possibly Palm Springs. The bathroom was also super cute! There was Santal in a little dish by the bathroom and a bar that I believe was also serving food. For our brunch/lunch we had the summer hash (without the egg & added salmon) and the Carob Acai Bowl. Don't worry, this place is and has long been amazing. For those who don't know the deal with NYC and Dimes let me give you a short primer on why the low stars: Since it first opened in a different (and much smaller) spot nearby, Dimes has been the king of trendy restaurants in Manhattan. With that status came a tidal wave of models, art freaks, hipsters, green juice addicts, and hardened scenesters. It also meant there had always been a wait and the food here still takes a notoriously long time to come out. So, that said, people who aren't so in love with man buns, celebs featured in US Weekly, or wait times could be served the best food they've ever tasted and would still give Dimes low stars. Also, if you don't look like a model (like me for instance) you can sometimes feel a bit out of place. But when it comes to super healthy, super creative, West Coast-ish food this is as good as it gets in all of NYC. The acai bowls and breakfast sandwiches alone have cult followings. And honestly, Dimes is even better now in this new home with an expanded menu and much shorter wait times. The Strawberry Pitaya Bowl here is absolutely awesome, topped with a homemade apricot granola, bee pollen, and tons of dragon fruit. The Love Toast happens to have the best house-made tahini I've ever tasted in my life, and pairing it with honey and berries was a pretty genius move. I also got the Big Salad with chicken which was ok but I know from hitting the other location that I should have been more adventurous with this one. A little boring. (Update: Get the Tuna Nori Wrap instead) Anyway yeah, come here and get ready to a see a mix of NYC's trendiest people laughing in their black skinny jeans, but also be prepared for some of the best healthy hipster food in the entire city. They kid not about this place being a hipster joint. I walked in on a random Tuesday afternoon & sure enough Dimes was bustlin' w/ liveliness. I was really craving a breakfast bowl & since I was in the neighborhood, I figured I might as well stop by since I've been meaning to since this restaurant opened. No offense but the waitress didn't really seem to care. She had that chilled vibe, which I completely get - your mood totally matches the vibe of the place. But when I asked "what's a pitaya?", are you really going to respond "...you know... A pitaya?" Smack my head.... Regardless, I ordered a strawberry pitaya bowl. Simply delicious! I had trouble deciding between 2 and 3 stars, since I hate basing a rating so heavily on service. But when the service is so horrendous it makes you not want to go back despite the food being delicious, it needs to be reflected. Knowing that the lines can be really bad we decided to go on a weekday for lunch (pouring rain on a Tuesday). The place was packed but we only had to wait for 5 minutes for a table. We got the Seared Tuna Nori Wrap and the BLT for lunch. The wrap was a party in my mouth. The seared tuna was barely cooked (just the way I like it) and the bitterness of the seaweed and heartiness of the black rice complimented the sweet and refreshing notes from the lychee and spicy cucumber. Avocado never hurts and the texture contrasted well with the crunch daikon. The BLT was very bacon heavy but not overwhelming and the flavored were very well balanced. I would truly eat the nori wrap all the time. It's so balanced and the perfect to go lunch. My friend and I were discussing that we wished there was a takeout counter to eat their food without interacting with their staff. The food took about 25 minutes which seemed like a long time to wait for a sandwich but they could have had a really long line of tickets so I can cut them some slack for that. What was really irritating was how hostile the servers were. And when we asked for the check the woman said she'd get it and then promptly went outside to chill and stare out into the rain. We waited another 15 minutes before we found somebody else to ask for the check. Food was 4 stars and the service was 0 to 1. I loved the concept and I was super excited for the food here, but I don't think I'd travel here again. Super cute, bright, trendy eatery, but the food was a bit lackluster. The bf got the Breakfast Sandwich, which was admittedly very tasty - I loved the texture of the bread and the fluffiness of the eggs. Perfect breakfast sandwich, but it was pretty small and not filling at all. He thought it was just okay. I got the strawberry acai bowl, but it was hugely disappointing. The bowl tasted like it had been pulled from the freezer - definitely not freshly made - because there were chunks of ice in it. The "granola" (tiny seeds and nuts) were also frozen and extremely difficult to chew through. I had brain freeze after my first few bites; my teeth felt terrible and it was truly agonizing to eat it. The bf wanted me to just throw it out and get brunch somewhere else, but I didn't want to waste it, so I just mixed it vigorously and waited a bit until it warmed up a bit and became more palatable. Aesthetically, Dimes is a very cute brunch spot. It's located near the heart of Chinatown and it's a pretty small place. It was a pretty busy Saturday, so it took about a half hour to get seated. Once seated, we were promptly served by the waitress. Together, my best friend and I ordered the Kedgeree, The Love Toast, and Breakfast Sandwich. The Love Toast - This was by far my favorite. The tahini sauce was creamy goodness and perfectly paired with the toast and fresh raspberries. Everything tasted extremely fresh. I really enjoyed the whole farm-fresh to table experience. Breakfast Sandwich- It was pretty good, but nothing extraordinary. Again the avocado, eggs, cheddar, and jalapeno were fresh, with a nice touch of Dimes house sauce. It's a pretty solid choice. Kedgeree - This is what my bestie ordered. The smoked trout was good, or at least I liked it better than my friend did. The poached eggs, pomegranate, parsnip, and basmati were paired pretty well in the plate. This was a really creative dish. I'd definitely be willing to go back again, provided that tabling won't be as much of a hassle as other reviewers have stated. Definitely watch out for peak hours. I'm pretty sure the only reason most people go here is to get this on their instagram. Let's be real, that's why I went (and the photo I shot broke 350 likes--boom!) I met up with another food 'grammer and were were vying for the pink table by the window but some family was there where the little girl was poking at her overpriced avocado slices. I was seated at one of the tables lining the wall, after we waited a little over an hour, and we did the awkward shuffle of pulling out the table, trying to scoot in, apologizing to everyone in a 10 foot radius of us and readjusting everything on our small table. I asked the rather chipper waitress what her recommendation was, and she suggested the kedgeree. It was an absolutely solid choice. It's an Indian-British dish with smoked fish a top curried rice with various vegetables. It was light, filling and I wanted a small bowl of it to go. I also ordered these matcha buns and I should've passed on those. The syrup or glaze they drizzled on top gave it an almost cloying artificial sweetness and was a rather unfortunate way to end a meal. TL;DR: The food is alright, but not alright enough to deal with your neighbors breathing down your neck because you're sitting atop each other in this cramped space. read more

THE WORST!!! Service was terrible - came in for brunch for 2 pax and requested to sit away from the sun. The server offered another table that was slightly larger and I ordered immediately while waiting for my friend to arrive. My friend was still on her way when my food was served and the server told me to move over to the bar if my friend didn't arrive and order soon (mind you, this was 15 minutes into me being seated). At this point, I was already annoyed and after I was done eating (which was 25 minutes after I was seated), my friend arrived but because of how disrespected I felt, I decided to just settle the check. This might be the most "hip" place I've ever dined. I felt awkward in the outfit I threw on before running out the door early on a Saturday morning. Anyway. Wear black and a beanie. The space is tiny and the wait is long. While we waited on the sidewalk, the host sent people around the corner to the Dimes Deli. We decided to tough it out. I shared the Love Toast, which was totally revelatory. Who knew that tahini and raspberries would work so well together? That's a must-order in my book. We had a great meal at Dimes at the end of 2022. We had the pulled pork (the best in my opinion!), the salmon and seabream. While they don't have a gluten free menu the staff were really knowledgeable and willing to check with the chef. The vast majority of the menu could be made gluten free and dishes that were fried (the wedges) were done in individual pans so there was no cross contamination. All were gluten free and fantastic! I came here a couple of times when staying in the area for work. I stumbled upon it in a groggy morning hunt for coffee and food. I came in and sat at the bar. I had some chickpea egg concoction which sounds super weird but was absolutely outstanding. The service is great, very on point but very friendly. The music is oh. my. god. If they don't send me their Spotify playlist I'm going to die. Someone must be in the music business or a musician or just have a highly trained ear because it's super vibey/lovely/special. Wandered in with KC for a late lunch. Having been here in the past, I expected more of a wait but didn't have any at 2pm on a Wednesday. I ordered the black rice and mixed vegetables plate and KC ordered the soup of the day and a side of broccolini. The black rice dish had a nice combo if avocado, eggplant, greens, and acidity but beware, the dish can get very puckering if you add too much of the sauce. Otherwise the black rice has a nice firmer texture than normal white rice and adds a tiny bit more savory nutty flavor than normal. I didn't get a chance to sample the soup of the day but the broccolini was a nice crunchy and spiced side to balance out our acid and our tangy dishes. So why just four stars? In other visits here, I've had less positive experiences with food, with excessive waits and only okay quality. Hopefully I can upgrade it to a 5 if they keep it up! read more

The best thing about Dimes is that it is a small space with surprisingly lovely acoustics and excellent music that you can fully hear and enjoy while carrying on a conversation. I'm pretty sure I would want to kill myself if I came here for brunch amid a bunch of social media influencers who were born in 1996, but for dinner the vibe was surprisingly adult and sexy, if culinarily perplexing. The second best thing about Dimes is its bravely creative menu, which is hit-or-miss. The curried, turmeric-stained, coconut-soaked carrot starter served with basil, cilantro, and shaved almond was FABULOUS. The burrata with pesto and red pepper sauce and crunchy toast was deeply satisfying in terms of sensuality, look, and taste. The fizzy rose and pepper and basil-keffir lime drinks were delicious and deeply flavored. But entrees were such a let-down! The signature quinoa and black rice plates were BLAND, BLAND, BLAND. "Well, it tastes 'healthy,'" said a companion, but our dishes could have used some pizzazz: A pico de gallo, a mango salsa, some carrot-miso dressing? I dunno. When Souen has more flavorful macrobiotic food, you need to step up your game. Our server was... funereal. We tried a rose-yogurt créme brulée with nasturtium, raspberry compote, and some kind of matcha powder or moon juice dust--which SOUNDS like glorious faerie food, but was meh. Boring food for boring people. I used to try to like this place, but now that I've grown out of my Daria phase, I realize that the menu is stale and the food was never good. It's made to be grammed, not to be eaten. The pancakes are the saddest, grossest pancakes I've ever tasted, for 14 dollars. The African porridge also has no flavor and a skimpy amount of sweet potato, banana and every other ingredient besides oats; it's fifty cents' worth of food, prepared in a worse way than I would have at home with no spices, for ten dollars. The coffee is weak, as if it were made by Tinkerbell or a writing major who never published anything, for $4 (with no refills). The dishes came out suspiciously quickly, weren't close to piping hot and gave off strong vibes that they had been sitting around (they had that chewy-microwave-reheated-leftovers / damp-sponge consistency to them). The waitstaff also kept bumping my IKEA-knockoff chair almost aggressively. One-star overall experience. There are healthier, tastier places within a block or two where you don't have to wait twelve minutes for a micromouse-voiced tree waif to notice your existence. Only pick this if it's the only place open, or if you ran out of random legumes to slice a quarter of an avocado onto. Or if you lost your dictionary and need to look up the word pretentious or the phrase 2000 & late. Or if you are a baby who is ready for solid food but whose taste buds aren't ready for real food with flavor. Or if you're as boring as the food. This is the #1 symbol of the gentrification apocalypse of blasé disposable-income boringness that's slowly oozing over Chinatown like microwave-reheated porridge. Yeah it's hip, yeah it's super Instagrammable (in the daylight), and yeah you'll pay a premium for those things. But what else is Dimes? Pretty tasty, interesting food and a cute date spot - especially if you're lucky enough to get the corner booth. My favorite dish by far has been the cod+risotto plate, which is 5-star deliciousness with a super citrus-y avocado yogurt sauce that I would put on anything and everything. I've also tried the spiced quinoa bowl (solid veg option but unexciting,) the cod lettuce cups (yummy) and the black rice (fine flavor but too mushy.) Came for dinner last night and the hostess with the short blonde hair (unfortunately didn't catch her name) was one of the sweetest people I've ever encountered in service. Came here to eat outside with a friend. HORRIBLY RUDE hostess told me there were no seats, when there were. Tacos were gross and service was terrible. Would never recommend. This place was like a bad cafeteria. read more
