people will argue about the significance of the "Dimes Square" hub or buzz in NYC--dependent on what side of the coin you're on. what can't be argued is that Dimes was/is what anchored the micro-neighborhood by serving up a healthy-ish variety of dishes in a chill cafe ambiance. West Coast-ish undertone in design and menu without being blatant...laidback and clean-looking but not sloppy... like your favorite pair of well-worn denim that works seamlessly in any mood or environment. the soft-touch lighting, modern-ish retro interior provides an intimate dining drinking + small bar area experience without feeling like your packed like sardines in a can. that said, if it's a full house, Dimes can be a bit loud. acoustics, ya know. while the menu is as much a draw as the digs with familiar diner-like offerings with unfamiliar influences...i find the coffee here to be consistently good if you keep things simple like an Americano when you want coffee as you make the rounds downtown with friends in tow or solo-dolo. most recently, used Dimes as a waypoint to grab coffee a few times recently as i made my way through things to do in the Chinatown, LES, & Two Bridges areas. Dimes has a nice flexibility for its food, drinks, and "vibes." definitely would recommend for a drive-by coffee or choose a light meal with friends and such if you have plans in the area. read more

Walked in for a Saturday brunch & got a seat immediately outside. These breakfast tacos were wonderful! Only complainant would be the need for a bigger tortilla because it was packed to the brim with toppings! LOL not a bad issue at all, there was so much flavor in the mango salsa + dimes hot sauce, the eggs were perfectly cooked & the bacon was PERFECTLY crispy! Exactly how I want my bacon. The John Kouka team loves the Neptune burger. We also love the Collard Greens. Last time we tried two desserts (one was on the house because they wanted us to try it.) In the neighborhood and looking for a great little brunch spot you found it! Nestled on Canal my friend and I came for a Sunday brunch. The place is small and very cozy. It wasn't super busy when we first got there but it definitely got really busy! And it was not loud at all. We were seated promptly. My friend had coffee and I had a latte which came out with a heart shaped design. For brunch my friend had the breakfast sandwich and I had the bergamot pancakes. LET ME TELL YOU! I'm not a big pancake eater but these pancakes were light, fluffy, oh so full of flavor. The blueberries on top were just perfect! I didn't even need the syrup on the side. I happened on Dimes last evening on my way to Chinatown, and decided, "Why not?" I chose the only vegan entrée--the Neptune burger, made with seaweed--and was totally unsurprised at how delicious it was. I'm sorry there weren't more vegan options on the menu, but everything I had was amazing. This tiny--I counted 30 seats, plus bar--restaurant is cozy and comfortable; I didn't ask their hours, but I'm sure they're on a par with the area restaurants. Dinner was a cute spot for dinner. Nice location, ambiance and helpful staff. Dinner was a tad underwhelming, but it seems dimes is more well known for brunch/breakfast. My steak was great, albeit a small portion. The broccoli rabe was bitter... but I'm convinced it's just a bad season for broccoli rabe as I've been disappointed all summer at multiple spots whenever I choose to Eat it. Next time I'll come back to dimes for lunch hours, and stick to my favorite Kiki's around the corner for dinner. read more

There were lots of "trendy" people there when we went on a Sunday morning. The menu was full of interesting Brazilian inspired brunch items, but the decor and atmosphere felt more like a toned down Urban Outfitters, and it felt disconnected. Fun spot to grab brunch with friends. We came on a Monday morning and it was pretty quiet, which meant lots of 1-on-1 time with our lovely waitress Breckyn. The menu is full of unique offerings - my fav was the MATCHA PANCAKES. The breakfast sandwich was simple yet tasty, but made even better by adding bacon. You can get a huge side of bacon for only $2.50! Score! Back to the matcha pancakes... bright green, topped with blueberries, blue cornflowers and crushed nuts. The stack was not strongly matcha flavored, and quite large, but somehow I managed to eat every last bite. My boyfriend got his usual espresso and I ordered a large cup of rose peppercorn lemonade. (All proceeds of the rose lemonade go to Syrian refugees - YAY!) Service was quick but we didn't feel rushed. The decorations are bright and fun, and remind me of a coastal cafe in Southern California. Great break from the hustle and bustle of surrounding Chinatown. Be sure to take a pit stop in the bathroom (tiny but super colorful). If I'm ever in the area again, I'll certainly be back for another delicious and nutritious meal. It was alright! Got the oyster mushroom toast because I'm an idiot and expected there to be oysters and mushrooms but it was just oyster mushrooms. Wasn't super flavorful but was a pleasant bite, the bread was hard to break off. My friend's pulled pork was great with a hefty portion, and the potato wedges were average. The place has not overcrowded but has a nice amount of customers to make it lively. I'd come back for another brunch with friends. I had Dos Tacos and the juice of the day - juice was a nice blend of 4-5 kinds of fruits, but it's only a small amount so the price of $6 is a bit too much. I ordered the BLT and it came out on one of the smallest plates possible. The bread was also pretty burnt on the edges. As I tried to bite into the sandwich and eat the market greens that accompanied it, everything just fell on the table Not only are the plates and portions small, the water pitcher and cups are even smaller. I wouldn't have a problem with this if the waiters were actually attentive and refilled the water. I've eaten lunch at Dimes twice. There's something slightly odd about the restaurant's atmosphere but it's hard to put my finger on what it is. Dimes is quite small, so prepare to be close to your neighbors. The vibe is neither relaxed coffee-shop nor is it upbeat. It falls flat somewhere in the middle, making me feel slightly awkward every time I'm there. It's saving grace is it's fresh, delicious menu. I've had the spring salad and the Cesar salad and added pickled salmon to both. I loved the salmon although it worked better with the lighter, cleaner spring salad. Since the Cesar had anchovies, it felt salty already and probably would have been better without the fish. Prices are also quite high and if you want protein on your salad, lunch will end up being about $18 before tax and tip! read more

Great food, cool vibe. I had been meaning to try this place for a while but what got me through the door is that they have a salad with jicama...oh jicama, my delicious and nutritious friend. (Seriously, if you've never had jicama, google some recipes, then go get you some!) I've been here twice now and I really like their colorful vibe. Fun place to come for a date or to catch up with a friend. First time I went we split the salmon salad toast and the encino man. I thought the encino man was all right. I was really into the salmon salad toast; the combination of flavors worked really well. Had to order it again the second time I came, as well as one of the acai bowls that I've heard a lot about. We got the berry acai and it was a refreshing complement to the toast. Out of curiosity, we tried two of their chilled beverages, the pH tonic and the umeboshi shiso seltzer. They were interesting, but not for me, so I probably won't do that again. I'll stick to the earl grey I ordered the first time around; I asked for milk and honey along with it and it came in a cute setup. Will not come here again. Dimes is known for their healthy food, but I believe that this place is incredibly overhyped and overpriced for subpar food and portion sizes. Even the service isn't the greatest. We had the love toast, the carob acai bowl, the berry acai bowl, and the encino man, and I think everyone was disappointed with what they had. The acai bowls did not taste fresh, it felt as if it was kept in the refrigerator for several days before serving it. There are so many tastier, healthy food places around NYC that I could have gone to. 4-ish stars for the food, 2-ish stars for everything else about this too trendy/too hipster to care about anything, somewhat larger but still tiny new location of the popular white girl hangout, Dimes. Go for brunch, and you'll see the throngs of skinny girls and their guy friends they're not interested in, in their skinny jeans, waiting outside for the hour or so waits. If that sounds appealing to you, then put your name down and go get a donut and/or cookie from the awesome Pies-N-Thighs two doors down while you wait. They won't text you or anything once your table's ready, so return and stick around the front. You'll be crammed in pretty closely into one of the small tables, and then you'll wait quite a bit more for some food to finally come out: - Tartine ($11) For an idea of what this asparagus, ricotta, sunny side up egg and chili on a crispy piece of toast is like, just open Instagram and you'll see something just like it very quickly. It was actually pretty tasty though, and not as boring as a typical avocado toast. - Carob Acai Bowl ($9) Next please (I tried, but sorry, I don't get these). - Sayonara Summer Tacos ($8 for 2) These were delicious. Make sure you say yes when asked if you want sausage or bacon in these. We opted for sausage, which was a great addition, and made for a great taco though the tortillas themselves were inferior compared to most of the good tacos in the city. - Breakfast Sandwich ($6.50) This is definitely the thing to get, and a solid bargain for an excellent sandwich at a low price. They sandwich scrambled eggs, avocado, cheddar and hot sauce between two delicious pieces of soft bread. Add some bacon to this one for a very satisfying option. I can't tell who here looked like they were more annoyed with life - the stressed out models that made the trek from Bushwick to eat their salads, or the somewhat rude, very indifferent waitstaff. Either way, it was pretty uncomfortable, both emotionally and physically, especially after the two-top next to us was cleared to make way for a family of 5. If you're too cool for school and/or moved to NYC from the Midwest and/or are living off your parents' money, you might really love this place. None of the above applies to me though, so I'm happy sticking with some excellent fried chicken and donuts next door. read more
