I had a very small order - just a double cheese burger. It came very quickly and was fine. The problem is the prices! I wanted fries but would not pay almost $10 for an order of them. I wanted cole slaw, but again I thought the price of $6.50 was way too high. Ordered as a platter, the price is about $22 to $23. The economy is not that great to be able to splurge. My boyfriend and i came here for breakfast. If I could give this zero stars I would. We walked in and no one even greeting us. It was not that busy and I had to find someone to get us a seat. We got seated the waitress came over wasn't the most pleasant. She took our order went to put it in and was chatting with the other workers. When the food came she walked it to another table and then realized it was our order then she didn't know what meal belonged to who. Then she came and threw napkins on the table. The food was okay. I had an omelette with pepper and onions and cheese. The peppers were raw like they were just cut up and thrown in super crunchy. The toast came moments later wasn't even cut in half. We had to ask for water twice. My boyfriend did like his home fries. The best part was when you ask for the check they open the menu to write the prices all out. This cute old fashioned diner is reminiscent of a little diner my mom and I used to frequent in Bay Ridge called Hinsh's luncheonette : old fashioned booths, pictures of food that is served, old fashioned register, red leather stools at the counter. Very vintage themed diner.. the diner is nestled in an eclectic block that houses a glatt kosher market, a kosher bakery, a really nice pasta restaurant, Steven's Pasta and smoke shops. When you enter this charming place there are specials on a blackboard and numerous booths and tables. We were seated at a booth and given menus promptly. This was our breakfast before hitting the beach. We both decided we wanted eggs. There are numerous omelette options especially " spa themed" that serve egg whites, rise and shine specials and of course bagels, French toast, oatmeal and other diner delicacies. My friend decided to order two poached eggs with home fries and toast. She enjoyed her meal with a large glass of iced coffee. I ordered one of the spa special omelette: egg white with spinach and mozzarella with grits and substituted toast with lettuce and tomatoes with house dressing. I really enjoyed my omelette but it seemed less egg white and more fried. The coffee was fresh and piping hot. The restaurant was hopping and filled with locals and Labor Day visitors. We watched waiters serving huge portions of toast, eggs and mouth watering shakes. The Rise and Shine specials are really worth it: you can choose for example, 2 eggs with home fries or grits and toast and coffee for $8. I dined in that the next day before hitting the beach. This diner is everything you expect from a diner: cozy dining with comfort food served daily. The ambience is cool and courteous service. Have been hearing about the shakes at DBTS for years. Finally got around to checking them out for myself and I was unimpressed. Let me start off by saying that I do appreciate that they aren't going over the top with their shakes. The shakes here are more affordable and more appetizing than the $15 diabetic shock shakes found in many burger spots these days. (The milkshakes here are $8.) But unfortunately, in my opinion, not worth the price. The shake I had was neither thick nor creamy. My Nutella shake had the consistency of chocolate milk. It was lacking in flavor and just not very exciting. I did enjoy the little tiara clip served on top... but I wouldn't willingly pay $8 for that. The fries were crispy and had a good taste. I always liked this diner...past tense. I went there last night for a burger... Well, the place was in serious disrepair. At the counter the tiles on the floor were not just broken but big chunks were gone. The walls and ceilings were pretty filthy... I waited about 10 minutes for a server to come over...I ordered a hamburger and my guest ordered a cheeseburger...the easiest thing in the world for a diner... I waited about a half hour and watched person after person that came in after me getting their food. I got frustrated and asked the waitress if there was an issue. I was told that there was no issue. 10 minutes later our burgers came out. Mine was RAW. Not rare! RAW. And not just the middle. The edge looked line raw chopped meat! Well, now I called the manager over. She told me the server forgot to put our meal in with the kitchen. Now it at least made some sense. She brought my burger back to be cooked...of course this time it was cooked so much it was pretty much leather. Through all of this, no apology! On a good note, my French fries were good. I love Diner by the sea, I've come here at least twice a year for the past 3 years in hopes to try at least half the milkshake flavors. I especially love to come here after a day at the beach because diner food is comfort food, and I've yet to leave here dissatisfied. On my most recent visit I tried the coco pebbles shake which the server mentioned contained Nutella, and it was amazing! In the past I've had the cake batter shake, the Nutella shake, and the oreo shake. Every time I bring a new person here they are in awe of how fun the milkshakes are, and are just as happy at their taste too. My friend ordered the fruity pebbles shake which she loved and was especially smitten by the princess tiara that was placed on the whipped cream. She was a big fan, as am I, of the decor that's placed on the walls by the local children. The major/only draw of this place is the big colorful shakes with little trinkets in them, and the shake itself tasted fine, most of the fun was in the presentation - same with the rainbow pancakes. The rest of the food was fine, not great, but certainly edible. The only other thing that brought this place down was the setting. The diner is fairly small and absolutely packed, which meant it was very loud, the service was inconsistent, and the entire place felt quite cramped. Prices were average for food and a little pricey for the shakes (the tiny toys must cost a pretty penny). Parking was ample, available on the street and the location in downtown Long Beach makes this a convenient day-out stop. I'm glad I went once, but I don't feel the need to go again.
