Today's new tryouts. # Red bean paste pie # Curried beef noodle in soup # Sauteed shrimp with chilli sauce Red bean paste pie had a thin chewy dough that was pan fried to have a perfectly thin crisp texture on the outer surface. When bitten, it gave way to a softer sweet interior. Delicate! Loved this. Curried beef noodle in soup's beef was super tender, melt in the mouth. It was not as spicy as regular beef noodle soup. I added a bit of Chilli paste/oil on the table :) Yum! Sauteed shrimp maintained plumpy texture - good :) All the other regular items (XLB with crab meat & scallop, Stir fried baby bokchoy with garlic, minced beef pie) are consistently great!!! We used to love Ding Tai Fung. The restaurant is clean and comfortable and it used to be good value. Not anymore. DTF is my daughter's favorite spot for XLB and stir-fried snow pea leaves, so we still come here once in a while. But to say the value has really gone downhill is an understatement. Not only did the prices go up significantly for most dishes, but the portion size has also gotten substantially smaller. We don't mind paying a little extra for food but to receive less when you're paying more seems like double dipping. For this dinner, we had 2 orders of dumpling, 1 rice dish, 1 noodle soup, and 1 stuffed pancake (yes, 1 palm sized pancake) and the bill came to $120 before tip. That same meal used to cost us less than $80 just last year. The flavours also seemed a bit off this time around as well, most notably with the braised beef noodle soup where the broth was way more herbaceous than it used to be. The chive and pork dumplings were also filled with mostly chives and could not taste the pork at all. The tiny turnip and pork stuffed pancake was tasty but for $7.25 for 1 pancake seemed terribly expensive. I came here for dinner with friends on a weeknight in July and it was a great first experience! While this restaurant isn't affiliated with it's very famous US counterpart with a similar name, it's still a great option if you're in the area. We got a few dishes to try and shared amongst us. Happy Chinese New Year and Year of the Dragon. I celebrated New years with my family. This restaurant has locations all over the globe. I've seen one inside the Aria in Las Vegas. Our favorite items here are the fresh soup filled dumplings, pan-fried dumplings, green onion pancakes, Shanghai noodles, braised beef rolled pancake, Siu mai with shrimp. The dining room is spacious, modern, and comfortable. It's much better than the First Markham place location. You order your food with a checklist order card, and the items are categorized and listed numerically. I'm very very very surprised about this restaurant. I did not have any anticipation at all for this restaurant. I am from Taiwan. This restaurant's name, Ding Tai Fung, apparently rips off the famous, michelin-star restaurant Din Tai Fung and the Chinese name is exactly the same. I even dispised it because how can a pirate brand makes good dishes? However, I was surprised at the moment stepping into the restaurant. It was very nice, modern and clean. I felt comfortable. The dishes we ordered were really tasty especially the xiaolunbao. I think I might be too harsh at it. I should reflect that the concept of intellectual property was not solid in the past especially in Asia. Nobody really cared about the brand names and just immitated each other. I think the owner might just used the name because...who would know in Markham, Ontario, Canada, there's a restaurant using a brand name that was only famous in a small island, Taiwan? My favourite dish at this restaurant are the xlbs. The skin of the dumpling is thin and soup inside is hot and steaming! This is exactly how it should be and will always be the highlight of this restaurant. This restaurant and the one's across America and Asia that share a very similar name do xlbs justice. This is my second time visiting Ding Tai Fung. The first time, I went to the FMP (Markham) location. This time around, ordered the steamed dumplings with pork and chives... as well as this beef cabbage soup which was delicious. The restaurant at this scarborough location was much bigger than the one in Markham. Looks like a cross between congee queen and a fancy chinese banquet. Overall the two items ordered hit the spot. We had all the standard dishes including the beef rolls, Shanghainese noodles, potstickers, Shanghai stir Fried rice cakes, etc. The food was all goods, this restaurant has nice bright lighting and a lot of windows with natural lighting. The staff were very friendly. My niece and nephew went to the window where you can see the cooks prepare the XLB, they gave the kids a small piece of dough for them to kneed, so it was for min for the kids. I knew it when they didn't have tiny chili cucumbers *sad* but besides that: The pork ear 豬耳朵 was a great appetizer. But these were marinated well and the seasoning complemented it nicely. 4.5/5 steamed soup dumplings w/ dried scallop & pork filling 瑤柱小籠包 - this was your average pork soup dumpling. I didn't really taste the scallop in it. 3/5 steamed soup dumplings w/ crab meat & pork filling 蟹粉小籠包 - this was really delicious! Personally, I am a fan of all things seafood so I welcomed the slightly fishy taste with open arms. And while their soup dumplings are no match for those from the true Taiwan chain, they're still good enough to try and come back for more. On this occasion, we got 12 pork soup dumplings. The skin is thin, soup is plentiful and flavorful and pork ball in the middle delicious. Had their beef wrap which was also delicious. Crispy Asian crepes with beef and some sweet sauce in the middle. Got their noodles in soup with pickled vegetables and pork. The noodles were fresh and the soup had a good balance of savory and some sour from the veges. Side of veges - Chinese broccoli. Steamed with garlic. Nothing special but hits the spot. The wrapper isn't too thick or thin - they're chewy enough to not break once you pick them up with your chopsticks. - Sticky Rice Shiu Mai: Not a fan... idk what I expected but it's literally just sticky rice wrapped in a dry dumpling wrapper. Not that good LOL. - Green Onion Pancake: Skip this - for the price it's not really worth it. Pretty dry and tasteless. This is a pretty large restaurant and I don't think I've ever had a problem with getting a table here or having to wait too long. Still the same exact menu, workers, and WiFi before the name change. Both their crab and pork xiao long bao are our go to and certainly not be missed. Tried a few new items on this trip - dan dan noodles and fried mantou. Dan dan noodles were cooked well but the dish was just overwhelming heavy. It needed some kind of sweetness or acid to cut the dish. Okay to share but wayyyy too much for me. Fried mantou - they used the twisty buns - crispy and warm - couldn't go wrong with condensed milk. Retried their beef rolls - after having them a handful of times in LA, I noticed instead of cilantros, here they used sliced scallions. Reminded me more Peking duck especially with the plum sauce. Overall - thought it was okay. I personally prefer fresh cilantro any day. Overall - will continue to be our go to for all soup dumplings cravings. I've been going here for quite sometime. My go to dishes are of course the pork soup dumplings, hot/sour soup, spicy wonton and sweet/sour pork. I've tried some of their other dishes but weren't too impressed. I always go with my husband so there's only so much we can order for 2 people (usually 2-3 dishes). The Bad: chicken marinated with wine, pan-fried dumplings. The Good: soup dumplings, wonton with spicy sauce. The Surprisingly Good: beef tendon in chili sauce, shrimp and egg fried rice. I personally wasn't a fan of neither the pan-fried pork dumplings nor the chicken marinated with wine. The fried dumpling skin was rather thick and the pork was overcooked. The chicken was unusually bland for it to have been marinated. Thankfully, their soup dumplings and spicy wontons did not disappoint. What surprised me were the beef tendon in chili sauce and the shrimp and egg fried rice. The tendons were quite tender considering it's a cold dish and went well with the chili sauce. As for the fried rice, it's such a simple dish that anyone can make but it's hardly ever memorable. Most fried rices taste the same but this particular fried rice just tasted better. This DTF location is larger than the one at First Markham Place. Finding parking depends on your luck and timing as it shares a parking lot with a few other stores. Do NOT mistaken this restaurant for Din Tai Fung, the international chain based in Taiwan. I would have given two stars but the obvious play on the name is very disturbing to me as I'm sure it would be to DTF. The restaurant is fairly large and well lit. The first thing you don't notice as you approach the restaurant is the lack of a line stretching out the door. The second thing you won't see as you enter is the demonstration kitchen where at least a half-dozen employees are busy rolling, filling and folding dumplings. There are large windows and a demonstration area at the back of the restaurant but there was no real activity going on there. The menu is in English and Chinese while the ordering sheet is in Chinese only. The items do correspond by number so ordering is still fairly straight forward and simple. I'm not going to break down everything we ordered and ate but suffice it to say that the flavors were weak and the temperatures too cool for my preference. The XLB come six to an order instead of ten and didn't hold the temperature as expected. The soup was sparse and bland. The vinegar on the table was red instead of black. I've been coming here since it opened as Xiao Long Bao. Same people. Same food. The place is nice and large and can get quite busy for lunch on weekends. Open till 11 PM, it's good for a later dinner too. I enjoy coming here for the different dumplings. This visit, we ordered a hot and sour soup, xiao long bao, steamed chive dumplings, spicy oil dumplings and a sticky rice roll (my favourite). Honestly this time all the dumplings' skin were a little dry and got a little hard, so it didn't seem as good. I'll probably still come back and hope it's better next time, because the taste is good.
