I have been going to Hatteras since I was very young and have over the years found my favorite places to go when I am down there. Dinky's is a new must. I went with my family last summer and had the shrimp & sausage gratin and couldn't stop thinking about it all through the fall and winter. I was so excited to go back for dinner this summer. I also tried the seafood pescatore which was perfect as well as the tuna tartare appetizer. The specials are also always very tempting - I hope this place stays open for a long time so that I can try every dish. It is a smaller restaurant so you might have to wait for a table but everyone there is super nice and they have a bar you can wait at. read more

A delicious meal every time! We love Dinky's so much that we even order the crab bisque soup to go so we have soup for the week. The seafood is always so good and prepared very well. This time, we had the tuna, Parmesan crusted grouper, fried scallops, and the peel and eat shrimp. Each dish was perfect and mouthwatering. The grouper was a nice thick, flaky fish coated with parmesan cheese. The vegetables were perfectly seasoned and crisp. A definite highly recommended restaurant for lunch or dinner! Dinky's Waterfront has a great selection of seafood and pastas. I enjoyed the meal and drinks, but didn't get the view that I anticipated. While it's Waterfront, it is not exactly a waterfront dining experience; no outside tables available and no view of the water after dark. Wow! Amazing food and drinks! This was our second visit in as many years and I see more stops in the future! Bartender Steve makes great cocktails and Chef Dwight is a master of the culinary arts. The food is the highlight as it should be. The crab cocktail for a teaser was a refreshing, flavorful and indulgent with a generous portion of succulent jumbo crabmeat and a symphony of veggies and tastes! My seafood platter was perfectly fried and fresh as can be! The red potatoes were seasoned and cooked perfectly and I even ate all my roasted vegetables! (Ma would be glad). My wife had the grouper that was like butter topped with sun-dried tomato pesto and feta cheese. She finished the entire plate! We were told this was the place for crab legs. They are not open on Tuesday or Wednesday so we went on Thursday. They were just ok. Nothing special. We had to ask for butter and cocktail sauce and that seemed it was a nuisance when we asked. I'm not sure we will return. read more

I was excited to eat at Dinky's, and while it was good, I felt that there was something quite lacking. Considering the name, I thought that this would be like a dive restaurant, yet we got a generic red lobster design. The shrimp platter that we had was mediocre, and the Jumbo Blue Crab was also just OK. My mom's blue crab ravioli had waaay too much cream sauce, and was bland. Bathrooms were an inconvenient pain in the butt to get to. On a positive note, my sister's tuna tartare was absolutely well done, and service was pleasant. Dinky's had my hopes up high, but left me very underwhelmed. If you want to get good seafood and are in Outer Banks, it's worth the 10 minute drive to get to Pop's in Buxton. read more

was excited to eat here but definitely will not be back. we arrived 30 minutes before the restaurant opened to avoid the rush and wait - and we were the third party / table seated. we sat down at 5:10 and ordered shortly after for a party of 5. meanwhile a party of 10 trickled in within the next hour and they were served food and drinks long before us. we finally got our meals at 6:20!!! a whole hour after we ordered and we were one of the first tables there with a much smaller party. everyone at the bar were also served way before us :) they forgot our appetizers and laughed at us when we said we wanted them taken off our bill. we were also harassed for asking if we could get a straw for my stepson who could not drink from his cup well - they man proceeded to tell us we were turtle killers and mumbled under his breath while walking away. the party of 10 ate and drank and were done well before we we even got our food. very poor service, DISGUSTED with how we were treated. read more

Because of reviews we decided to try Dinkys ... we got seats at the bar. Took us 10 minutes to be acknowledged. Seemed like the bartender was bothered by people sitting at the bar. My boyfriend got a a second beer and the bartender didn't ask me if i wanted another drink instead she went to other side of bar and was on her phone for several minutes... when he got his 3rd beer he said do you think she can get a drink. The calamari appetizer was the least amount of calamari i have ever gotten in an order. Our dinners we both got specials were very good... best part of the experience. We stayed at the Village Marina and I walked over in the rain to get put on the waiting list. The girl keeping the list was extremely rude when I asked if I could be put on the list. She asked me how many was in my party and I said four. She wrote four on her paper but did not ask my name and went on about her business. I turned back around ask if she needed my name. She finally wrote my name down. The wait time was 45 minutes. We waited outside for over an hour. I went back up to check and see how much longer the wait would be. She looked at me and says, I already called your name. I told her we had been standing outside with everyone else and she says, I already called name. We never did get to go in. All I can say is WOW and thank you! I was worried my husband and I would not be able to find good seafood this weekend because of restaurants being restricted to take-out only, but Dinky's proved us wrong! A party walked in without masks on, tables were pretty close to each other and there didn't seem to be any capacity limitations - it was pretty full and all windows were closed. Despite good food and beautiful view, the dinkys staff really capped our family vacation off with a negative and demeaning experience. After waiting 1.5 hours with our family, we received no polite apology from the host staff. Noting the sour mood in our group, I asked the hostess if she could just comp a dessert or appetizer just to make everyone feel a little better (we had a $250 bill). She said she'd speak with waitress. On way out I gave her and her friends who were hanging at the bar our bill and noted that there was never an apology or a token comp. To which the only reply from her party was "they're never coming back." Sad because they could have saved our experience there but didn't care. We went EARLY( 4:45, 15 before open) on a friday for the 3rd try this week. They are always busy because there are not a lot of restaurants to choose from in Hatteras. We didn't want to wait the 45-50 minute wait around 7:00 for a two top. We had the shrimp gratin, tuna tar tar, Thai shrimp and scallops and seafood risotto. Everything was full of flavor. All the seafood was cooked very well, leaving the flavor of fresh seafood complimented by the other ingredients in the dish. We came here based upon yelp reviews and honestly, I wasn't impressed, even before getting sick. The food was decent, but in the trying-to-be-fancy-but-missing-the-mark in a big way. The restaurant sits on the second floor of the building, overlooking the small Hatteras harbor. The upstairs is accessed by a steep, twisting stairwell which I had to use several times taking our friend's 5 year old to the bathroom down said stairs. The service was terrible. Both our server and busboy's restaurant training was completely sub-par for this type of restaurant. Our server was completely unhelpful when I told him I am gluten-allergic. He just stared at me when I asked him which specials would be safe and finally said, "I think those are ok." I explained that I don't want to get sick so would he mind checking with the kitchen? He then repeated his initial comment to which I requested he ask the chef. Managers, chefs and owners who care about patrons are concerned about allergies. Yes, they are a PIA but it's a service industry and for $150+ meal, I expect mine to be taken seriously. Train your staff, even summer help. Several minutes later, our server came back, stood behind me and touched my arm to get my attention. Food industry etiquette 101: DON'T touch customers, ever. He proceed to tell me that everything except the tuna was ok but in a non-convincing way. The server brought me the wrong side, so I asked for the original request and he brought me some. Then a few minutes later, he brought me a second serving of the side (rice) and apologized saying a different server "took your plate." Oh boy. Honestly, we truly thought there was something wrong with him at this point. I should have trusted my gut and asked for a manager when I got the picture this guy really wasn't compos mentis; I got sick within an hour of leaving-- meaning, my fish had flour in it. :( My husband and our friend also felt the food was too expensive for the quality (entrees are about $25-35 FYI), the prep, the presentation and the service. I went to Dinky's last night with my family expecting a great view at the Outer Banks, great Southern hospitality (as I have received at restaurants like The Captain's Table), and excellent food. Unfortunately, none of these things came true. First off, the wait was extremely long (1.5 hours) and twice the amount of time I was previously told. The hostess, waitress, and manager did not offer any sort of apology about the wait. The service once I sat down was slow and the waitress was more interested in getting my family out of Dinky's so they could close than providing quality service. I knew the staff didn't care when they laughed at my family as we were walking out and said "They won't be coming back." So disrespectful. The only redeeming quality of Dinky's was their food, which was good, but overpriced. Overall, the positive qualities of Dinky's are heavily outweighed by their garbage service. Dinky's is a very fitting name for this restaurant, as it is the amount of care they have for their customers. Very dinky. read more

With very few restaurants to choose from along the remote strip of Route 12 in the southernmost Outer Banks, Dinky's, in Hatteras village, is a very solid choice for high end dining. Their portions are plentiful and the prices are quite fair for a vacation destination restaurant. Some highlights of dishes you should try include the fried calamari, the lobster bisque and the Caesar salad for appetizers. The salads here are huge so it can be split between two people. For entrees, try the seafood platter, available either broiled or fried, which includes shrimp, crab cake, sea scallops and the fish of the day which, on my visit, was mahi mahi. It is served with starch and vegetable and is a really good option. Thai shrimp and scallops was also excellent. It definitely has the Asian spice you would be looking for in a dish like this and it was quite tasty. I was fortunate to visit on a Friday night which is prime rib night. They offer either a 16 or 22 ounce cut and the 16 was more than enough for me. It was cooked exactly to order (medium) and served with garlic mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. It doesn't look like much from the outside but Dinky's is located on a marina so a hidden bonus is the view of Pamlico Sound found right outside the restaurant's windows. I didn't feel like I was ripped off as a tourist eating here in prime season. For that reason alone Dinky's deserves praise. The fact that the food is above average is an even better reason to eat here. read more

Passed by and turned around and went back. Great thing we did. Our timing was great in terms of being seated. Right away and with space for our two newborns. Jai our waiter was very attentive and engaging in our "tourist " dialogue. Sunset was wonderful with a storm on the horizon. My wife loved her goat cheese appetizer and the salad she got. My mom got the sautéed scallop dinner and was more than pleased. A big portion for sure. I went out on a limb. Gorgonzola cream sauce with mushroom and spinach chicken dish. Substituted pasta for garlic mashed and veggies. Dish was incredible. If you like Gorgonzola or any bleu cheeses - highly recommend. To note I am not a seafood fan. Never have been. The food was, however, very good. We had the Clams Casini and Tuna crostinis (sp?) as appetizers along with huge bowls of Lobster Bisque. Again, very good with nice presentations. I had the king crab legs as my entree. Delicious and seemed quite fresh (of course, it's hard to screw up crab legs). Prices were about right for the quality of restaurant. Our two meals were about 100 bucks (with drinks). A few nights before we ate at The Sandbar, also 100 bucks, but TERRIBLE in all respects. read more
