We ordered a BBQ Grill online and designated the Diridon Station Ace Hardware as our store for assembly and delivery. Well, the online transaction didn't go smoothly, so I called the store and talked to Josh. He gave me some ideas on how to work with Ace's online and I finally got the order through. Note the store isn't truly involved with the online sale until it goes through the Ace order website and the order reaches the local Ace Hardware store's inbox. Now for the best part of this delivery. I called Josh to make sure that they got the order. He confirmed and then gave me a reasonable timeline for assembly. He was upbeat and gave me a window of time when I should call him back regarding assembly and delivery of the BBQ. I called the store within that timeframe and, Josh had a day off, so I spoke to Jose. Once again, I encountered a staff member at this store, who is upbeat, and had a reasonable answer to my question. Anyway, the delivery happened smoothly with the help of Nicko from the Willow Glen Ace Hardware. So I spoke to three staff members from Ace Hardware Diridon and Willow Glen, and it was a pleasant experience from first phone call to delivery. The BBQ grill works perfectly. Thank you. read more

This store is surprisingly well-stocked! I ordered a replacement part (from a third party) for a cat tree that did not come with the hardware to attach the part to the existing structure. I needed a handful of obscure, extra-large metric furniture bolts, including some parts I don't even have a name for (double-ended headless screws?), and I was able to find exactly what I needed in stock at this Ace. It was way more convenient than trying to order the hardware online, because I could test the bolts to see if they fit the new part, plus no waiting around for shipping. I hope this place lasts. Customer service is 1,000,000,000 times better than their competitors. The guys that work their know their stuff, and if one guy doesn't have an answer someone always does. I love the use of space, they pack in everything you need in a smaller area. I would rather travel a few more miles and feel like I'm a customer, than to go to the big orange place and feel like I'm a burden. God that place is frustrating. BEWARE of this Ace Hardware store if you place an order online for pickup. They gave my item away to someone other than myself, and obviously did not check ID or get a signature, and I am still being charged for it. They can show me NO proof that it was my husband or I. The store is good sized and the staff are plenty helpful but I regretfully will only be going here in an emergency that can't wait for amazon 1-2 day free shipping. They've recently put up a sign saying you must leave your shopping bag/backpack up front. For me, the convenience of this place is I can go on my walk home from work. However if you cannot trust me to not steal a $10 hammer why should I trust you with my $2500 work issued laptop? Not even the Ace I've visited in San Francisco had such a policy and numerous customers there are going to and from work with a pack of some sort. read more

I stop by on my way home from work. I carry in my back pack, I don't ever leave it in the car. As I enter I'm asked to leave my bag at the door. No, I will not do that. Customer service was AWFUL! If someone comes in and asks for a specialist in plumbing and you just have a blank look on your face, maybe you shouldn't work at the front desk. This review is for the free bogus item that suposed to come with the tool. There was never a free item, all was just a liar to lure people into buying their merchandise. I ordered the Milwaukee cordless driver kit because Ace advertised that it came with a free item, a cordless drill tool. I picked up the cordless driver at this store on the same day that I ordered. The free tool was supposed to come three days later. I waited two weeks and finally received the email that my tool is ready for picked up at the same store. When I came in to the store, they told me that they don't have the item and told me the item was canceled. What a waste of time. The told me to call customer service. This is not the way Ace Hardware suppose to do business. Advertising a bogus free item just to lure customers into buying the cordless driver from them. I can buy it at a cheaper price from Amazon without a free item. But instead, I ended up paying more for them because of their tricky business practice. Don't waste your time buying stuffs from Ace Hardware because of the free item that came with it. It will never come. read more

Generally I like Ace hardware stores, but not this store so much. I bought a padlock, then came back a month later to get spare keys and was told they could not get them. This was a key with "Ace" stamped right on it. The guy behind the counter asked me "When you bought the lock, did you ask if there were key blanks available for it ?" The worst lighting I've ever encountered in a retail establishment. -Harsh, direct LED lighting -Dim, ubderlit aisles -Uneven lighting because of all the shadows that direct lighting casts (ie you can see the product because your body is in the way of the light) You may be wondering if this reviewer is just an overly-critical kind of shopper, but first I'd suggest visiting Ace in the evening and see how the lighting effects you experience. So glad to see an actual hardware store open up. I hate shopping at Home Depot--although there are exceptions, I find staff uninformed, not service oriented, and on occasion rude. Staff at this Ace, on the other hand, were attentive, helped me troubleshoot my problem (re-keying door locks asap), and I left the store with an affordable and doable solution. I went back to purchase some bolts and nuts and was delighted to find boxes w/ individual bolts, nuts, etc. for single purchase (vs. those annoying bags at Home Depot). Although I only spent 65 cents, another staff member helped me understand how the thread count worked on bolts, and in no time I was on my way home to finish my project with just what I needed. A welcomed new hardware store in the neighborhood after the closure of both Orchard and its parent Lowes. This is a small hardware store but packed with a variety of items. The aisles are efficiently stocked with a variety of departments that you would expect from a hardware store. They have barbecues, a paint department, garden (but no plants), hardware, and household wares. The staff is attentive and available to answer questions. One small nit is are no bike racks immediately outside but that is the city of San Jose's responsibility. There are bikes racks outside of the nearby Whole Foods. read more

I had a rhodent in my kitchen. I lost vision in 1 eye and could not set the trap. Josh set me up with electronic trap and batteries and I caught igrey rat and 1 baby. I tried to use a coupon I received in the mail for a free key to be made. After giving them the coupon, they cut the key and tried to scan the code no luck and they do not accept the coupon after the fact. I told the manager Diana to override I it. She refused and said the owner would not be happy if she did this. Well I left the cut key with them and if you think they would give me the key as a goodwill gesture you would be wrong. I had no clue where to begin from the moment I walked in. Marcell greeted me graciously and schooled me on what I needed and matched the best we could with the photo reference. Treating every person with a presumption of guilt does not make for a pleasant shopping experience. I'll just order online next time. I've been a frequent customer to the store since I live in the community. The store is tidy and organized and its layed-out in a way that it's intuitive to locate most items and the clerks are polite and friendly. I usually buy most tools and buildiing supplies at Home Depot because they have much better selection at way lower prices. I'm not sure if Ace in general has marked-up prices over other competitors or if it's just this location. They seem to have a "corner market" approach, where convience is worth about 20% more than the bigger retail competitors. Which works, as I go there often because it's a quick walk out the door vs. driving out to another store. However, they do tend to have an assortment of items that other big-box stores don't carry. For example, some ime back I really needed a half inch T-nut and could not get one locally and online I would have to order a 10 lb bag of them. Sufice to say I never got my T-nuts and had to find another solution. If Ace would have been here at that time, I would have easily found one. Not only do they have less prominent styles and sizes of nuts and bolts, they also have them individually priced if you only need one or two. On top of the vast variety of loose nuts and bolts they have the most selection of fasteners that I've found anywhere in San Jose period. Maybe you're putting together an old bookshelf but you lost the hard ware? No prob, just go in and get a cam lock or a screw post or whatever you're missing. Its a crazy selection of knobs and wing-nuts and springs and anything you need to put something (back) together. I signed up with their Ace Rewards program as I figured it would be a good way to keep track of purchases and spending. This was beneficial earlier in their lifespan when the reciept ink was so faint it would mostly didsappear by the time you got home and tere was no way to tell from where and when and what had been printed on it previously. Although they have changed their printing supplies and now can be read the day after your visit, sometimes I'm just not good at keeping up with reciepts. I only sign up for rewards programs at places where I shop often and there may be a chance of a return and thus the cataloging of your visits has always been mostly in my favor; I understand that there is probably more nefarious data-collecting and profilling going on behind-the-scenes but it's hard to find any business entity that doesn't do this and I consider it an unstated comprimise since I wont have to keep up with reciepts. Since I frequently stop into the store to find items to assist with an assortment of projects, I often buy more than I need or experimental choices on the chance they may be suitable for the task. So whatever items I end up having extra or didn't quite work out, I'll just return them on one of my next visits. Most of the time I bring them in sans receipt and have never had an issue returning or exchanging. My point of this story is- yes, Home Depot will look up reciepts too but I've found that most smaller stores usually wont and I found this to be a great perk. All-in-all my only gripe would be that the prices are questionable and the selection of tools is very slim but I wouldn't expect that much from such a small spot. I was excited when I heard there was going to be a hardware store opening a block away and I'm feeling good that it'll remain a nice option for odd items that you don't want to drive accross town to pick-up. read more

Trying to shop locally at this new hardware store was not a positive experience. When I requested a specialty light bulb, with which the clerk was unfamiliar, I asked if it could be ordered. "If we have it," was her operative mantra. She then referred me to another store (not Ace!). At the counter, the gentleman at the register put in the data, found the requisite bulb, but did not conclude the ordering process because the first clerk preempted that register. We moved to an adjacent register, but the clerk stepped back and told me that he "was waiting for his sales associate." Weary of the runaround, I left and I won't be back. This store is well stocked with the odds and ends you expect to find in a hardware store, and some you don't. I needed an empty steel pint can to dilute some stain with mineral spirits. I looked up the can online on the Ace Web site, went to this store, couldn't find it, asked at the front, and was directed to the right shelf in the right aisle. Bought the mineral spirits there too. Lots of tools. Lots of hardware. I've always found the staff eager and helpful. A note on the inside parking: Yes, it's kind of weird. It feels tight getting in and there are tight turns, but there are designated retail spaces in the parking garage, which is shared with the overhead condo living spaces. Yes, you have to find the right exit door (the first time will be confusing but not on subsequent trips) and the walk down the long, long corridor from the parking garage only to pop out on the sidewalk where you have to make a u-turn to walk into the store's front door is kind of weird too. However, They Have Parking. You can park on the street out front if there's room too. It's a joy to have some retail downtown. read more
