Once I saw the Vera Cruz sandwich on yelp, I knew I had to try it. On my last day here in Morgantown, I hung around shops on high street waiting for Dirty Bird to open at 11 AM. TOTALLY WORTH IT. I just texted my husband to tell him "I think I just had the best sandwich of my life." I absolutely ate both halves of the sandwich, no way I could stop myself. There is at least one eatery for virtually every cuisine imaginable, catering to the diverse needs of a multicultural student body that is always looking for a taste of home. Downtown Morgantown alone is stacked with dining options but one stands out as seeming to come right out of a Southern dreamland. In most cases, multiple dishes and visits are needed to tell the full story of a restaurant, measuring the consistency of service and preparation across the board. There are exceptions to every rule and Dirty Bird, for me, is one of them. When your most notable food item shares its name with the restaurant itself, consider me intrigued. When that item is one of the most delectable, memorable, borderline gluttonous, and richly satisfying meals that I can recall, the term "five stars" comes to mind well before the last bite. The Dirty Bird's eponymous masterpiece is the reason to go, the reason to return, and the reason to spread the word. Writing the description has me ready to get in the car and drive two and a half hours north. Built on the foundation of a scratch-made buttermilk biscuit, a fresh, perfectly cooked chicken breast is topped with bacon, Cheddar-jack cheese, and a fried egg. As massive and savory as the combination may be, the dish is not yet complete. The plate is missing something. Atop the biscuit is, of course, gravy; country gravy on one side, and a rich brown gravy on the other. The visual is nice but the flavor is absolutely exquisite. Your personal physician may not be thrilled with your lunch, or dinner, selection but there is not a better meal in all of Touchdown City. Many labels will suit the Dirty Bird but the most appropriate description is a single word: unforgettable. The rest of the menu is stacked with options to appeal to most anyone, ranging from fried chicken dinners with a range of side dishes to specialty sandwiches piled high and thick with meats, cheeses, and vegetables. Tammy, one of my guests, ordered such a sandwich, the Demi Club, but underestimated the sandwich and overestimated her stomach capacity. The sandwich was excellent but, in a moment of cloudy thinking, she tossed half of the sandwich, enough to feed another very hungry person, in the trash. The rest of the table was shocked and saddened. We probably won't bring her back. It's a respect thing. The place is small but the service is excellent. The menu is large but, frankly, I will never know enough to speak of the flavors that the other items deliver. No, the Dirty Bird is one of those special places for a culinary freak where there is no need for trial and error, eating through the menu as if everything would be ranked from best at the end of the journey. Just WOW. If you are ever in Morgantown, WV please go spend all your calories here. All of our sandwiches (see my pix) were incredible, sides, delicious. The french fries were crispy and perfect. I do NOT recommend eating anything before or after because portions are delightfully large. Staff is friendly, and for a small restaurant everything was super clean. This is hands down the best sandwich shop in downtown Morgantown. In fact, I'd say all of Morgantown. The fried chicken is pretty darn good too. Go hungry, because the sandwiches are large. The standard side is a small salad, which is a nice change of pace, but they have great fries too if you feel the need for massive calories. Dirty birds food and service gets 5 Stars however because they are locally owned restaurant and do fairly well they seem to close as they see fit for vacations and such. I learned that I would have to call them to ensure that they were open even if they were supposed to be open on their posted hours. My favorite sandwich is the Monte Cristo but my overall favorite meal there is the named dirtybird. I would highly recommend this establishment if you are in the area. read more

The best chicken place I have ever been. My husband and I used to come in here at least once every two weeks, sometimes more. The dirty bird and the plain jane are my favorites but I hear they all are great! I love the sides too, amazing fries and to die for mac n cheese (it even has bacon in it!). The staff is so friendly and starts to learn your names and orders (not just ours but I see you this all the time while eating there). They really take pride in their food and that is so refreshing. Been here a few times and finally getting around to a review. Best fried chicken in the tri state area. The reason they don't get a 5 star review is because of their sides. They need to work on their mashed potatoes and their beans and rice. I've had two or their sandwiches and they are delicious but be warned they are very messy. Went to the dirty bird on a lark one blustery Saturday morning. Ordered the Dirty Bird Sandwich. I want to make myself clear, it was one of the most amazing things I've ever eaten. It was a revelation between two biscuits, and I have been itching like a crack fiend to get back in there and demolish one ever since. Do yourself a favor, and go to the Dirty Bird, and order the Dirty Bird. You will not be disappointed. What came first the chicken or the egg ? Well at the Dirty Bird it doesn't matter. I ordered the dirty bird a chicken breast with bacon,cheese,an egg and both buttermilk gravy and brown gravy on a biscuit !!!!!! Wow is all I can say it was unbelievably good!!!! If your in Morgantown it is a definite you have to have it. My only complaint is that I had it on the day I picked my son up for the summer wish I had it sooner I could've enjoyed it every time I was in town. read more

Without a doubt the best place to get fried chicken in the Morgantown area. The chicken is freshly fried, tasty, and crisp, and the sides are up to Southern standards of quality: mac and cheese, greens, and flaky/buttery biscuits, among others. The french fries, too, are worth ordering, and the couple of times I visited The Dirty Bird they made the fries fresh and gave an extra portion. In my opinion dirty bird is the best place to eat in Morgantown. Although they are not open late night, the food is very good. They hand batter the chicken In house and all the chicken is always so good! Outstanding (thanks Brennon O.) is the only word. The fried chicken, sides and sandwiches are all great. Fried chicken is all made fresh and comes out crisp, juicy and ultra hot! Thai chili and hot sauce for dipping. The sides are literally arguably the best I've even had at a similar casual restaurant. Dirty rice! Garlic green beans! Mashed potatoes! Sandwiches are huge and messy but delicious. Everything is homemade. And staff is friendly and free refills on drinks! If I lived in Morgantown, I'd be here at least once a week...at least. They do close for about 5 weeks at the end of each summer. So if you're there between mid-July and the 3rd week in August, you're SOL! And don't just take my word for it. My company is doing a job in Morgantown and our it's our foreman's favorite place. And the fried chicken is so good he ordered only that his first 4-5 times eating there. And I went there for lunch yesterday with three other people and they all loved it too. The one guy even said he'd drive his family 2 hours from Johnstown, PA just to eat there. read more

Deserving of the overall high rating. Fantastic chicken, sides are hit or miss. Chicken was made fresh, not sitting under a heat lamp. Had to wait 10-15min for it but on a weekday at noon for fresh fried chicken, that's pretty great. Crispy crust that wasn't too dense or thin, moist meat, not too salty. Comes with dipping sauces. Sides: fries were great, garlic string beans had good flavor but way too salty and oily, biscuits not enough salt and a bit dry but with the butter they come with, they're good. Taken on its own merits the Dirty Bird is a fairly nice joint. Hype on Yelp compared to reality, it's one of the biggest disappointments I've ever experienced. You order at a counter. The girl at the counter was friendly and happy to discuss the menu. I ordered chicken tenders with a side of fries and a side of dirty rice. The guy I was with ordered the same, minus the rice. The fry on the chicken tenders was great - a thin coating that wouldn't overwhelm the chicken or catch in the throat, flavorful, not too salty, not at all greasy. Underneath, the chicken was just... bland, and kind of stringy. No seasoning, no treatment for tenderness. It was high quality fry over generic grocery store chicken breast tenders, really. The fries were what made me want to check the place out in the first place - I first heard about the Dirty Bird on a webpage that listed the best fries in the nation by state, and the Bird's are supposed to be West Virginia's best. Thing is, they're battered fries. Really, really good battered fries - deliciously seasoned, served soft and steaming hot. But they're battered fries, not real fries. The rice, however, was the biggest disappointment. Even then, it had a nice seasoning blend, some chopped ham mixed in for texture - but the problem with it was, it obviously started as Uncle Ben. It was kind of puffy, tannish-yellow, and had that canned carrot taste to it. Both meals came with biscuits, and the biscuits were great. Would I go back? Were it convenient to do so, I'd probably go back and give their signature menu item a try. Being that I live a 90 minute drive from Morgantown, the limited hours the Bird keeps (see below), and that there's a few other places in Morgantown I'd like to try the next time I'm there at meal time, I doubt I'll make it. The price wasn't too bad, but I could have got pretty much the exact same chicken tenders at a Ruff Creek Market gas station store for a lot cheaper. Regarding what other reviewers have mentioned about the Dirty Bird's odd hours kept and how they're sometimes closed when they're supposed to be open, the waitress explained it to me. They order enough food to prepare for one average day's worth of customers. When they run out of food, they close for the day. Their hours say they're open to "four-ish", but if they happen to have a busy day they may close up as early as two. read more

I was in from out of town visiting friends and while I was waiting for my food, the women working and the customers were talking very negatively about the WVU athletic programs. The language that was used in the restaurant was really inappropriate and especially for a Saturday afternoon. I feel like the opinions on athletics should not be broadcasted to the entire restaurant with foul language.
