My mother loves every sweater I have ever bought for her from here. I was warmly greeted by three or four of the staff members as soon as I walked in the door. I always am greeted every time I walk in here it seems. It feels like the Cheers of the clothing/retail shops. I feel like this place tends to be for the more rugged and out-doorsy folks, which I am not. But I always manage to find a great sweater or two in merino wool, cashmere or a mix of fabrics. I spent some time browsing around in the men's section. I ended up finding a one piece jacket/shirt hybrid. Orvis brand. One of the staff members had the same shirt and he said it was great shirt and he loved it. He said it's super versatile and warm and has a lot of added features that my stepdad would like. I was sold. Was about $170. The entire staff is an A team of helpful, patient and informative peeps. Each will go above and beyond to make your experience great here. I didn't realize I was in the store after hours. There were still four staff members that had stayed on to help me out until the end. They didn't rush me out or make me feel bad about keeping them at all. I did thank them for staying a little extra. They said they had stuff to finish up still, so staying was no biggie. I took a little extra time to try on their barbour jackets, as these require a bit more time in selecting the perfect color, style and fit for a jacket. The wax jackets are around $420. It was great since I was able to do 1-stop shop for my parents tonight. Found two cashmere sweaters for my mother and two sweater/jackets for my stepfather. Their Christmas gifts are done. I was able to find two cashmere sweaters, one cable knitted for myself, a black barbour waxed jacket and a inner vest lining for it. A successful trip and put a good dent in wallet too. I was told the Barbour jackets are great and durable and lovable for many years to come. I so love the smell of their frasier fir candles here. I buy some every year from here.

Not here to talk bad about others. My wife said call another location and just ask. I waited a few months, should have taken my wife's advice, but I called the Royal Oak store and talked to Luke. He said come in and he will help me. Sure, I thought, just like the other one did. Well, Luke actually did help me. Fixed the problem and away went. I walked out extremely happy customer thanks to Luke. Honestly, Luke saved Hanson's, they would have lost a customer for life. I send everyone to Hanson's, now it will be the Royal Oak location only. Thanks Luke.

They are so good about making sure you try on as many shoes needed to get the right fit and comfort for running. Since they are so knowledgeable they will often have recommendations on which brands are the best fit for your feet, for arch issues or if my running gait leans more to the right or left. I have had so many running shoes from here. They have Brooks, Asics, Saucony, New balance and even addidas. The last one was by new balance. I don't buy my running shoes from anywhere else but here. If you are runner than you already know this is the place for the runners in you.

Given the popularity of hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, and other outdoor activities is…read moreMichigan, you'd think there'd be more stores catering to these activities in South Oakland county, but the number has shrunk over the years. There's a Cabelas over by Selfridge, and a Bass Pro Sports up in Auburn Hills, but this is the only big outdoors store within 30miles of me. (I don't count Dunhams, which caters mainly to team sport activities.) Sportsman's Warehouse is the only big box store in the area that caters to traditional outdoor activities, and while it's no Cabelas, it's not bad. The archery selection is fair if you're a fan of compound bows or crossbows, but the last time I looked that had on,y two recurves or longbows. There's a lot of fishing gear for fans of spinning and bait casting, but not a lot of quality fly fishing gear. Selection in most departments is a lot narrower than you'll find at Cabelas, and not all sizes are in stock. Several times I've gone there looking for shoes and boots but couldn't find any 12s in what I was looking for. I went looking for a range bag a while ago and found just a handful of bags. The firearms selection is decent if you're looking for a 9mm auto or an AR clone, but you won't see a wide range of .22 rifles or pistols. The reloading equipment section is very thin, with only a handful of powders, cases, and bullets. Ammunition selection is wide in areas like 9mm and .223, but thinner in other areas. The .22RF selection is a seemingly random selection that changes, probably depending on what available. Still, I do visit regularly, and sometimes find good deals. I picked up a Frog Togs rain jacket that was on sale not long ago, and sometimes you'll see something interesting in the used firearms section. If you don't have a regular sporting goods store nearby, and you do t want to make a long trek to Cabelas, it's a hand place for many supplies.

They have an extensive collection of Lugers, and usually bring out military surplus to the gun shows. Their Taurus line up is often extensive. However, if you're looking for new HK's or more elitist brands, they're not often in stock at this location or in very limited availability. They are more than willing to order them, but be prepared for an unpleasant surprise at the quoted price. Though they're one of my favorites to browse at gun shows, I rarely go to their store 1.) because they never seem to be open after work when I'm able to go and 2.) some of their store employees suffer from the same machismo that turns me off from dealing with gun enthusiasts. Call ahead to make sure they're open, and go in knowing exactly what you're looking for.

There are some good rifles and shotguns in the rear of the store, and racks filled with overpriced junk on a rack in the middle of this little shop. Around the store, on the floor, are bins of old ammunition at top prices. Behind the counter you'll find a mixture of inexpensive pocket autos, old guns, and the owner, Griz, who dispenses some of the most outrageous BS you'll ever hear in a gun shop. I've heard him go on about AKs, saying he spoke at length with Mikhail Kaliishnakov at the US distributor's warehouse. Nice try, but Kalishnakov never worked for a US distributor and didn't speak English. The last time I was there he was explaining that the ammunition shortage was due to the government buying up all the ammunition made and shipping it overseas. The younger guys who work there are pretty reasonable, and I'm told that Griz is in the process of selling the business to his son in law, so perhaps things will improve. If you're in the neighborhood it's worth a visit just to see the old collectables, but generally I purchase my ammunition and supplies elsewhere. Update: The last half dozen times I've driven by the store has been closed and locked up. Are they still in business? No idea.
