I DO NOT recommend this company. especially for seniors!! They are not clear with there costs or estimates. and will leave you high and dry if their time estimate runs over. You will have to call to set another pick up at a higher cost. if you use them plan on paying double of the estimate they give you. My Husband called them up to help him move since it's just him, I can't help him since I'm pregnant with twins and they came over and said he had some loose stuff everywhere, my husband said he was going to take care of those himself but he needed help moving the furnitures like the sofa and big cabinet and there where boxes that was already packed ready to go but they didn't help him cuz they couldn't get over the loose things, one guy said he'll be back to call his boss but they just went and left him, that was so f^**cked up!!! We've used discount movers 3 times and will continue to use them for every move. They are respectful of your things and work hard to get the job done as efficiently as possible. Our movers were Kyle, George and Cody and they worked so hard moving us into a three story townhouse. The prices are very reasonable and they were able to accommodate our schedule. read more

Kyle, Raul and Nick did an excellent job this past Thursday. I couldn't be any happier. They moved everything out of my 2 bedroom condo into my new 3 bedroom tri level home. They were extremely fast yet took care of all of my furniture and televisions. I already had the boxes packed, labeled and they put them all in the right rooms. I was actually shocked at how fast and efficient they were. I would 100% recommend them to all my friends and family. I had them put a certain bed and dresser in a bedroom downstairs and now that I've lived here for two days I wish I would have had them put in the 3rd bedroom upstairs. We had this company scheduled to arrive between 8-9am. They called at 8 and informed us they were having problems with the truck and they outsourced our job to another company that would arrive between 10-12. Well the other company flaked. I wish we had something positive to write about these guys. Thanks I guess for trying to get us another company to move us, but why couldn't they just try to get another truck instead of giving us to another company that flaked? We were able to find a u-haul to rent and do the job ourselves, why couldn't they? read more

OMG they never showed up! There are plenty of moving companies in San Diego that show up when they say they will - why risk going with these guys? My scheduled time was 11-2. The storage facility I was transferring my furniture to closes at 7pm. So my drop dead time was 4:30pm to make it all work. They never bothered to call me - instead I had to initiate. They sound friendly and engaging on the phone so I assume they suffer from a massive lack of organization. I called another mover for next weekend and he told me it was the 3rd time in the last 4 months that he got business from Discount Movers because they never showed. Think long and hard about the inconvenience if your mover does not show up. Not showing up is really the only cardinal sin of moving companies. read more

First and foremost I have no idea what expenses are like for moving as I have never hired movers before. My dad recommended them to me, so I figured it was a good idea. When they arrived they made sure I knew that they accepted tips - which as far as I'm concerned, gratuity is EARNED, not expected - otherwise it would be part of what you're charging me. We discussed what needed to be moved, including that I needed something that was already at my condo to be moved up the stairs. He said it was all good, so we started. The good: very quick, very efficient The bad: After driving to my condo, the guy seemed to be pissed off and I don't know why...you said you were the best mover in San Diego...an archway shouldn't be a problem for the best. Said it was never discussed that they would move what was in my garage up the stairs and tried to charge me more. Finally, after everything was moved and they were done, he tells me "this is the minimum I can charge you - before tip." Again with this must needed gratis. You're lucky I tipped you. Would only hire again if I had a different guy...I'll spare his name. read more

Alright, I'm glad I read the most recent reviews on this page because wow, how the mighty has fallen. I used Discount Movers in 2010 to great results; the movers were professional, kind, speedy and a pleasure to work with. I was in complete awe at how wonderful my experience was and I recommended the company wholeheartedly to anyone I knew who was moving. Well. Times have changed. I'm moving again this summer and called Discount Movers to schedule an appointment. I chose Discount Movers solely based on my positive experience three years ago. James, the "moving manager" I spoke to on the phone, was so apathetic, rude, rushed and borderline unpleasant I literally gave up halfway through the conversation and just decided to find a new company to work with. James had no customer service kindness. He mumbled his way through the entire phone call and seemed so rushed to get me off the phone and treated me like they didn't value my business. He spoke really fast (and I'm a fast talker and listener, but with his mumbling it was impossible to really understand what he was saying) and I had to ask him to slow down his speech at least three times. After each time, he then would sigh repeatedly and then slow down in an exasperated tone as if I were being ridiculous asking them to clarify what he wants me to e-mail them. He did not ask me about what I needed moved. He didn't inquire about valuables or concerns I may have. He didn't even ask if there were stairs or other things most moving companies would want to know. He just asked, where you moving from, where you going, okay here's my email, oh yeah what date do you want to move, bye. There was zilch interest in making sure my move was planned and set up properly for the actual date. James was so off-putting that at the end of the conversation, I told him, "Umm... I think I might go to check out other movers" and he made no effort to try to keep my business. No questions on, why I would call them and book something, only to change my mind minutes later. No attempts to be friendlier or to try to figure out what to do to keep my move. Instead he responded (quickly), "okay then" and then hung up. The conversation lasted three minutes but within those three minutes, I became completely convinced this is NOT the same company that I worked with three years ago and that I knew I would not be comfortable handing over my household to. It really is a shame and a pity. It seems I'm not the only person with this sort of experience and disappointment. I was so hoping I could go back to Discount Movers because I imagined I hit the "holy grail" of quality movers. But it seems now they're just again one of the pack and I'd be just as uncomfortable moving with them as I would with other low quality movers with no focus on customer service. Are there so many moves in San Diego that they can pick and choose their business, or discard a job as if there are 50 queued up behind it? Perhaps, but it doesn't excuse the severe decline in customer service. I'd stay away. Check some place else out. Your household and the items within it are so important to keep safe and I'm not sure Discount Movers are the ones to do that job for you. read more

I used Discount Movers last month. My overall experience with them was overshadowed by the "Demand" for an unreasonably high tip. Four guys showed up to move my household of furniture (The contract was for a minimum 5 hour job). The lead mover, Joey or Jerry?, immediately told me (a single elderly female) they normally got $50-$100/mover for a job. I told him that seemed a bit high and that there was no mention of a tip when I made the arrangements for the move over the phone. Since I had to be out of my house that day, I felt I had to tread carefully or they would walk off the job, so I just nodded, signed the contract, and walked off to do something else. I felt they might be trying to take advantage of me because I was a single elderly female. The move proceeded. When we got to the new house, I offered everyone cold water bottles or soda from a dorm refrigerator that I had pre staged the day before. They all got drinks throughout the unloading process. I didn't have any real complaints about the work (I ended up with a few door trim scratches, but nothing I couldn't repair). However, I felt they did not go to any extra effort to put things in the right location, e.g., many boxes were put in the wrong rooms in spite of the location markings, the BBQ grill was left on the side of the house, not on the deck, and potting bench was not put on the deck like I had requested, but I did not complain as things are hectic on moving day. They finished the job in 4 hours, in part because they didn't waste time and I didn't have 5 hours worth of stuff to move. When the lead mover approached me for payment, I gave him the check for the agreed upon contract price and 4 twenty dollar bills for a tip (1 for each guy). He and another mover both started telling me that wasn't enough and that they didn't make much money from the job. They insisted I tip them more, at least $40, and I told them I didn't have that kind of cash. The lead mover told me I could write a check out for the tip. I said no. They got mad and made several comments each to try to make me feel bad/cheap. As they were leaving, they sent the youngest mover back into my house to grab as much water and soda from my refrigerator as he could carry (at least 6 containers). I felt this was rude, but didn't say anything. I called my realtor, who had recommended them from a vendor list he maintained, and told him what happened. I asked him what the industry standard for tipping movers was. We looked online and found that it was not uncommon for it to be 5% of the total bill, split between the movers, which in my case would have been $50. Other indications for tipping were from $10-$40, depending on how good the service was. My realtor was horrified at how the movers tried to demand such a high tip from me and as such, did not use Discount Movers for his move in May and took them off his recommended vendor list for his clients. I relayed my experience to the manager at Discount Movers, John. He indicated it had happened a few times before with this lead mover and that he would talk to him again. Clearly the talking wasn't working. I told him I would be doing a yelp review and he asked me not to and offered to send me back my $80. I told him no thank you. I suggested that he let his clients know that they should check online for the industry tipping standard before the movers show up. This way, clients know what to expect, can deal appropriately with unreasonably high tip demands, e.g., $50-$100, and not feel bad/cheap. read more

I would start saying we did not use this company at the end. I was really sad it did not work out. They kept saying they've been in business for more than 20 years but it seemed they did not have any experience on customer service. They kept asking for exact number of items and I was not able to provide that information -this is an office by the way. It was going fine at first but when I called to confirm the information one day before the actual move day, and it changed completely. I don't want to be disrespectful and say bad thing just because, but the person on the phone laughed at me when I told him that I rather use another company because it was too much drama... So, I wouldn't recommend this one unless you know exactly the number and type of items you're taking with you. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from Discount Movers within days of my move to express their concerns and sadness that I had such a bad moving experience. They expressed that this is not their normal experience and that they would make it up to me. I had previously used discount movers. My last experience was positive. This time, not so positive. I was told that there would be a 4 hour minimum, which I was OK, with based on the rate and compared with other moving companies. My total move time was less than 2 hours. I was greeted by my movers outside of my complex. They each introduced themselves so, so far so good. The lead mover went over the paperwork with me and was sure to let me know they gladly except tips. As my move progressed on, it was filled with constant 4 letter words and constant badgering from the lead mover to the other two movers. All my stuff made it from one location to the other safely. My first move with discount was very easy going, the movers were a lot more professional. The movers I had this time were poor representatives of the company. They have left a bad impression. It was a complicated move with items being packed for several stages of moving into her new place with an addition yet to be constructed. The crew was quick and careful and very accommodating with all her requests. They were patient and respectful as she decided where to place her furniture and asked to have things rearranged (again), as well as being careful to sort the items and boxes into 3 separate areas in our garage. Good enough job for the money. The staff was amusing, although the truck they brought was too small and they seemed intent on getting the job done without really paying too much attention to reading what our boxes said. We ended up with about 40 boxes piled in our kitchen (all had clear labels on the sides and tops), a couch was left in our loft outside the guest room (contrary to our request) and they didn't bother to remove the plastic on some of our furniture (in little used rooms). We were present during the move but I'm not going to watch them like a hawk to make sure they do their job as requested. So while they were cheap and quick, they didn't really finish the job. I have never used a moving company before but this move had a longer distance so I decided to call and get some quotes. I called several companies in the area and either they didn't move between counties or they just didn't call me back. I decided to try one more and it was Discount Movers. I was taken care of from the start! John was amazing at providing a quote while I was on the line and gave me details and tips for our move. I called the next day and spoke to Jerry and set up the move date. I was told that the movers would show up around 9:30am. We were so excited to see that the gentlemen showed up a bit early so there was no time to waste. We had the pleasure of working with Mike V. and Mike H. They took a few mins to assess the move and immediately started loading the truck. John was not kidding when he said the movers would be efficient and fast and I was sooooo happy we were prepared!!! These two gentlemen worked wonderfully together. In no time at all the truck was packed. They were so kind and so professional!!!!! We then drove to the new location. They arrived with great timing. They were unloading just as fast if not faster than they loaded the truck. They put the boxes and furniture exactly where I indicated. The efficiency and professionalism of these two gentlemen made our move so easy that we were completely unpacked and settled in less than a week. Don't use them We hired the movers to come and box up our smaller items one day and then move the larger items the following day. They came in asked what needed to be boxed up after we showed them said they didn't have enough materials. Then they refused service and proceeded to complain after that we said that was fine and said they were free to leave. They were demeaning and rude. They were also late. Given that I made my decision to use this company based on their reviews on Yelp, Kudzu and the like, I feel that it it is necessary to leave a review of this moving company. The upside: Made a reservation and received a quote for my move by telephone with Joe. The interaction was a positive one, they seemed professional and competent. They called two days prior to the move to confirm and give a time of arrival. Good in my book. The downside: The movers were unprofessional and caused damage to my 2 week old furniture. If you are looking for a professional moving company, DO NOT use them. If you are a college student and don't give a care about your belongings, feel free to use them. When I made the reservation I went over the list of items that I was moving 5 miles away. I was told that I needed 3 men for a minimum of 4 hours. I thought this sounded reasonable given that they would inventory my items to be moved and disassemble and wrap my furniture blankets to prevent damage prior to loading on the truck and reassemble everything on the other end. They did no inventory. They did not provide any type of blanketing or wrapping of items to prevent dings and damage of furniture. The biggest insult to injury was that they insisted on a tip for 2 1/2 hours ($184.00 per hour) of work and once the tip was handed over the simple courtesy of a "Thank you" was never given. My husband gave them each a $20.00 tip ($60.00 total), I wouldn't have given them a penny. This outfit is amateurish at best and negligent at worst. I would not recommend them at all. I wish I had know about the filtered reviews section of yelp prior to hiring this company. I was called hostile this afternoon for my words in this review. What I realize now is that everyone has different levels of expectation and that leaves plenty of room for disappointment. Fast does not make a job excellent. Just moved across town and had a great experience with Discount movers. We were off to a not that great start when they called to say they would be an hour late but one of the owners I think, Jerry called us to let us know he'd be knocking off the fuel charge for the inconvenience. Nice! I still had more packing to do anyway. Jamal and Aurthur killed it from the get go. If you go with Discount movers I completely recommend using this duo or professional moving and comedic power. They were fast, efficient and kept my wife, our 11 month old and myself entertained the whole time. Moving is stressful but also exciting these guys amplified the excitement level by 50 times! A joke here a funny story there and before you know it we were all moved in. This was such a unique change from the dry, boring types you often have to deal with at business's in everyday life. These were real dudes that take pride in their job and best of all have fun doing it. I would absolutely use Discount movers again. BTW this is my first Yelp ever. On the flip side, they did not wrap anything, did not have any mats to put down to protect the floor, and did not reassemble any furniture at the new place. Not a single item was damaged - they took great care with moving a large, HEAVY antique armoire. They made it look easy! I know this review is "after" the fact. I am writing this because I am moving again and don't even want to think about using them again. I used discount movers in 2006. Best movers EVAH! They arrived on time. I was moving 90 miles away. The 3 movers were funny, nice, very helpful - I did have everything ready. They unloaded and everything was in great shape. Thank you. In 2012 I used them again to move back to San Diego. The office manager gave me a quote, we agreed on time, date, etc. He kept mentioning tipping them, as there would be 3 movers. Day of the move... I once again had everything ready. They were an hour late, and only 2 movers showed up. They mentioned the tipping right off the bat. ok - no problem. The next 4 hours were the worst. They complained about everything, even with my neighbors helping them. Kept mentioning tipping. Told me I couldn't take my area rugs. Duh! We all got stuck in traffic on the way down, (big accident), but they were able to use the HOV lanes, thus arriving at my storage shed 30 minutes before me. They kept calling me an asking for directions to the shed. I had given them printed out (detailed maps). I arrive at the storage shed, they did have everything unloaded and stacked great. They were not in the best of moods because of the delay. We then headed 6 miles away to our final destination. They called once again for directions. oh my. They unloaded, mentioned tipping again. The bill they gave me was much higher than my original quote mentioning the delay due the accident. I did not pay the difference. They mentioned tipping again. Furniture was broken, scratched, they had also used regular packing tape to seal shut some small cabinets, and upon taking it off the paint/finish came with it. Bad service = no tip read more

Your first question should be what do you expect when you go with the cheapest movers available. Discount Movers will do your move cheaply priced but afterward you may feel as I do viewing it as poorly done. The main thing when you are moving is to get all your items from point A to point B. The things should be in the same condition as when they were packed. Unfortunately with Discount Movers you are likely to have items that are broken, in fact expect it to happen. You will cringe every time they slam the items down. They move quickly but the downside is they have little regard for your things. There is little doubt they want to finish the move fast feeling that is how they get the big tips. Imagine yourself a few hours of days later when you find things broken, not working or simply out of place. If you hire them act like a supervisor for each box. "This box says 'Kitchen' can you move it from the bedroom to there?" Repeat this for each box or item and tell them to slow down. Remind them you have payed for four hours of service not two. If you don't then you will start to unpack and be like myself and many others here. I am asking the question if they were helpful with the move or did they create more work for myself. I expected a little more especially being the move was a simple one and took less than two hours. My advice is not to tip them. Instead use that money and Discount Mover's lower price to help buy replacements for whatever they broke. The best thing you could do is find a better moving company. They will not be getting my business again. I gave them two stars for the price but that is all they get. read more

Let's face it - moving sucks. Sure, you're excited about moving into a new place and not having to hear your neighbor and his boyfriend get into physical fights at all hours, but the actual process of moving is a huge pain. Which is probably why I put off dealing with it until the last minute. I called Discount Movers on a Wednesday for a quote to move that Saturday. The quote was very reasonable and, after calling a few other places, I booked Discount Movers. I'm SO glad I did. The representative I spoke with on the phone was friendly and very honest - he told me I would only need 2 movers, instead of trying to sell me on 3. (Side note: They called me the day before the move to say they were going to send 3 guys anyway but only charge be for 2 - win!) The movers called as they were on the way and showed up right on time. They were kind, clean and professional, and VERY good at their job. I have never seen guys move that fast. I saw them literally run back to the truck on occasion to unload more boxes. From the time they arrived at our old place to the time they finished and left the new place, it was just over 2 hours. The final cost was exactly the same as the estimate they had given on the phone. Not only will I recommend Discount Movers to my friends, but I will absolutely call them again the next time I move (which hopefully won't be for a while!). read more

This was my first time using professional movers and the service was truly exceptional from start to finish. I was able to make an appointment on the day/time I needed, the quote they provided over the phone was accurate, and they provided wardrobe boxes for me to use at no additional cost, which was tremendously helpful. The movers (Jim, Kevin, and Lee) were quick, very conscientious about my belongings (fragile or not), and extremely helpfull overall. This was the first time I have used professional movers. Discount Movers was recommended to me by a family member who had a good experience with them. I'd like to start with the good. I had three movers who did a great job. They were fast but careful and moved everything in about two hours. The head guy was kind of rude at times but the other two were extremely polite and very professional. In all, they worked hard and all of the items I moved made it in one piece. Now for the reason I rated two stars only. The main reason I hired a professional mover is because I have an upright piano. I called a couple of movers and they could not accommodate the piano. Others could but were more costly than Discount Movers. I explained that the house I was moving from was a single story home with no stairs but the new home had 4 stairs to the front porch. They told me this would not be a problem but I would need three movers instead of two to complete the job within the three hour minimum and there would be a "piano charge". I thought this sounded good so I booked them. They called two or three days before the move to confirm and I verified that they had that piano on my order. They did. The day of the move, the three movers showed up promptly and asked to see what I was moving. I showed them and when we got to the piano, the head guy said - "Ain't gonna happen. Especially with a few stairs at the new place.". He said the person who I spoke with on the phone should have never promised they could move the piano with stairs. At that point, I had the three guys in my house already so had to pay for them. And because there was three of them instead of two, they got the move done in only two hours. So I paid for an extra guy and an extra hour and my piano did not get moved. I suppose I could have sent them away but I needed to move everything else that day so I didn't. I called yesterday to "complain" because I now have to spend an amount equal to what I spent with Discount Movers to get the piano moved. And the company I decided to use for the piano could have moved everything in the first place. I spoke with a manager and he said he would research the problem. When he got back to me, he said that I would not get any kind of a refund because I paid for 3 movers and a minimum of three hours. If I didn't have three movers, I would have had two and a minimum of four hours so the cost would have been the same. That was not explained to me when I booked them. UPDATE - Jerry called me today to discuss my issue with the piano. We were not sure where the communication breakdown regarding the ability to move the piano came from but he offered to reimburse me an amount of what I spent which I found very fair. Because he called me and was so willing to rectify the situation, I have changed my rating to five stars. As a business owner myself, I understand the importance of making things right to retain customers. Jerry went above and beyond and I will certainly use Discount Movers again because of this. Soooo impressed!!! These guys never let me down. As soon as we finished the walk through with (Billy, Jordan ,Lee ) these guys got to work.It truly looks like a performance never a wasted movement. Price good. John was friendly on phone. Then Yuri showed up. Right away he asked about my new place, and I said it was 3 story townhouse. I also told that to John. I had packed myself and everything was not only sealed but had a label which room it went into. First Yuri asked me if I had a garage - yes... then he said it would be more convienient for them to put everything in the garage and I could carry in one box at a time as I needed to unpack. I said NO thank you - why would I do that?? I hired you to carry the items up 2 and 3 flights or I could have done the move myself. I am a female and cannot carry heavy boxes that far. First he decided all my Christmas stuff went in the garage and when I said it was fragile and old and I wanted it up in the 3rd bedroom I was using for storage, he said it was stupid and he had never heard of anyone using a bedroom for storage or putting Christmas inside (hey.. it's my money pal). Then he told me where I should put my bed - and he is no decorator as he would have my bed in the middle of two windows... he also thought that was stupid. He complained and complained and after he left and I tipped him and 2 other nice guys each $50.. for a 4 hour move (which they did finish on time) he said he wanted to let me know that my move was a "nightmare" and that each step had a lip on it and that made it harder to get up the stairs. He also told me if he was back in Russia he would have a great job (brain surgeon no doubt!) but he could not leave the USA. I hate to hear that type of thing. If you take a job then do it and be happy you have a job! I said something to the other two nice guys about Yuri giving his opinion and they said they hear his lip all the time and are sick of it and ignore him. I think they lost some screws to my bed because he said bolts were missing (it's 20 years old and was not missing any before it was moved). I go into the garage and what do I find? My two HV boxes full of china that were supposed to go 3 flights up and 14 more boxes I get to carry up. I found MBR stuff in the office, kitchen stuff in the living room. MBR stuff in the guest room. Muddy footprints of his on freshly shampooed carpets. i don't care if they are cheaper; they are not better. I should have have to put up with poor customer service and a mouthly person who thinks he is a decorator and brain surgeon and is lazy on top of it. Who would let him DUMP everything in the garage? Question one : Why is he still working for them? i would have called and complained but to what end? He knows where I live and I have a feeling he is not a nice guy. read more
