The "House Cat" at the Discovery Inn.
    Mic J.

I'm really writing this for the owners/operators, whom I think are wonderful people. Each time I check in, they are always very friendly and accommodating (and always give me several fresh clementines for breakfast). I love the Discovery Inn. I've stayed here several times so far this year (and numerous times before that) and each stay has been excellent. I live in Los Angeles but find myself in the Bay Area on business once a month or so and I always stay at the Discovery Inn no matter where my business is. I know I can expect a friendly, clean place with more than reasonable rates. On the outside, the building looks bright and clean. The grounds are always well-kept and neat. There's a 7-11 a very short waking distance from the hotel making late-night and/or early-morning food/sundry runs a snap. Inside, the rooms are just the right size. The beds (mattresses and pillows) are very comfortable and the bedding clean and crisp. The bathrooms (toilets, showers, sinks, floors) are always clean as a whistle. The towels/wash cloths are fresh, thick, bright white and in perfect condition. The amenities are above average for a hotel in this price range, free wi-fi (that actually works), cable TV, microwave, refrigerator, and coffee pot. Perhaps my complete, 100% satisfaction with the Discovery Inn is because it totally exceeded my initial expectations. It's a basic, clean, comfortable room at a below competitive rate--and that's exactly what I'm looking for. Oh, and when you stay here, keep a look-out for the "house cat," a sweet and friendly black and white kitty who the walks grounds as a sort of goodwill ambassador, welcoming weary travelers who stop here for the night.

Rm 120. No sign of the continental breakfast at 6:30 a.m. though. I have to say I was looking forward to a muffin and some Motel coffee.

There were…read moredefinitely things on the coordination/planning side that seemed unorganized, and even as a guest I could see the holes. - PARKING - They have a dirt lot in the main entrance area, but I believe there are also additional spots across the lawn past the mansion. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - It's a beautiful venue, with a nice outdoor patio area where the cocktail hour was eventually held, a beautiful small pond and shaded gazebo spot, and the ceremony site where another gazebo sat. Unfortunately the sun was blazing that afternoon, and with us facing the sun, it was extremely hot and uncomfortable. Some seats also had some bird poop on it, which was not pleasant to see. The coordinators/staff were not very vocal, so sometimes it was hard to follow instructions on where to go next. - EXPERIENCE - Cocktail Hour: The flow of the area was hard to navigate, as if you wanted drinks you would need to enter this narrow porch to get one. However there were also staff members exiting the building where the narrow porchway led to, so there was definitely some traffic there. Eventually they had waiters pass out hors d'oeuvres and also drinks, so it made it easier for guests to receive things without needing to get stuck in the patio area. Reception: We were instructed to go up the stairs where dinner would be held. Initially it was nice to finally have some shade, but it quickly turned very cold and windy on the hill. As reception started, staff began to serve salads. There was a large break between salad and the entrees, and it looked like they were confused on what table had what entrees. We were also told to not make that loud of noise... but it's a wedding and it was only 7pm? I'd understand if it was later at night, but it was so early still! Dancing Hour: It was very loosely suggested that guests should use the photobooth, and that we only had about 30-45minutes left to use it... but we didn't even hear there was one to begin with! They also started to pass out desserts inside the dancing area, but they were quickly swooped by guests and some of our table members didn't even get one. - OVERALL - A very beautiful location, but if the owners of Elliston Vineyards directly oversee the coordination and planning of weddings, they should definitely retrain their staff.

Of course the first slot machine we went to hit and we started up $300, which we essentially gave back as we were chasing the big win. A guy next us said 'It only takes one spin to win' and we took that a little too literally lol. We played a variety of the machines, but the most luck we had was with the Top Dollar Machines, the others weren't lucky this time around. While we only left up $30, we spent 3 hours of fun just playing away. Something I haven't seen at any other casino was a free soda and non-alcoholic drink areas! It's Pepsi products though, so not the best, but at least it's free. I saw people ordering smoothies, which looked really good but we never stayed at a slot machine long enough to get one. We came on a Thursday, and it was bummer that there was only (1) blackjack table going with a $5 minimum. I walked by multiple times and there was never an open seat. Plenty of seats of pai gow or poker though. Maybe it was just the time of day, but definitely would love to try my hand at blackjack next time around.

My son ordered the chicken and waffles: The chicken was 1/5 - dry and underseasoned The waffles were a 5/5 - perfectly made, but served with a really unappetizing pepper jack cheese butter and spiced jam that didn't go well with it all. No syrup whatsoever was provided which would've really elevated the dish. My wife had the clams / vongole and they were pretty solid, 3/5. The mussels weren't obviously previously frozen, but the broth was tasty, and the croquets were average. My kids started with the garlic fries which were also a 3/5 and had a good amount of garlic and herbs. The ketchup was overly sweet but house made. The aioli was very acid forward and tasted like it had some sort of artichoke or vinegar mix in it that didn't match the flavor profile well. I asked for a recommendation between the veal and the lasagna and was told the lasagna was the way to go. The lasagna came out and looked beautiful, but taste wise... super traditional which some may like, but I found to be super disheartening as it tasted like low expectations. It might has well been microwaveable lasagna that was plated and finished by a chef. The tomato sauce base that it sat in was the highlight, but the lasagna itself was a disappointment. It brought me back to 2nd year of college, when roomies took their first stab at cooking. The server himself was great, friendly and attentive. But in regards to food, I would never come back here. You could get better Italian food in a mall food court and at half the price. (I wouldn't eat there either).

But the shepard's pie was not good. It was completely unseasoned. He tried adding some HP sauce to a few bites, adding salt and pepper, and just could not make it edible. he was really disappointed because that is one of his favorites. I told him he should mention it and see if they could bring him something else, but he was adamant that would just make more work for them and he'd feel bad. I did remind him that shepards' pie is not a very seasoned meal. And he said it wasn't just that, but that everything tasted like it came out of tin. I reminded him, as a human who has lived in England, that this was also not out of the ordinary. We did decide we'd try it again next time we were over that way, and he already has chosen something else to try, so the rest of it (including his Mango Cider) was good enough to have him not give up on it. Our server was doing her best on her own for the entire establishment and we respected her situation. The Gabby's Jolt was merely strong and seemed to be missing ingredients listed on the menu. We had ordered the stuffed mushrooms appetizer which was tasty, the filet mignon entree and halibut entree ( of which we told the server we'd like to have a glass of white wine to accompany it but had to wait until the entree was nearly cold to receive it). We ate two servings of bread an do bitter while we waited for the entrees. The filet was tender and seasoned well in addition to being cooked a bit over medium, had a large portion of spinach and mashed potatoes, and came with the same red wine reduction sauce as the mushrooms which we found a bit odd. The minutely seasoned halibut has to have been the tiniest piece of fish we've ever seen served and only had six small potato quarters and like 6-7 stalks of asparagus with it. Overall, we ate everything because of the small halibut entree, but will most likely not return. I suggest the owners have more than one server on a Friday night, For everyone's sake.
