First night in London...made early reservation because I heard there is a line to get in. Upon our arrival, no surprise, there was a long line. We approach the front and was greeted and seated immediately. The staff was very friendly and helpful in guiding with recommendations. The fried okra sticks were delicious to start. The lamb chops were made perfectly and the monkfish was delightful. The live music in the background is a bonus in the restaurant that has an old diner feel brought into 2025. My understanding is that each of their restaurants look a little different. The seating area was comfortable and welcoming. Most of my friends recommended ordering 2-3 plates per person. We got the gunpowder potatoes, garlic naan, daal, lamb chops, and rice for two people. Everything was deliciously seasoned! Our order was delivered 5-10 minutes after it was placed. The place was packed! The service ended up being a bit slower than we anticipated. One of our friends who visited recommended this place for us. Ambience is pretty nice with good music. Had a waiting time of around 30 minutes but we could order from the bar. We took colada colaba with rum and kalla khata non alcoholic drink. Both were pretty good. We ordered chakna which just felt like haldiram mix. We got a chili broccoli salad which is good if you are looking for something spicy and healthy. We ordered a jackfruit biryani which was kinda disappointing for me as it tasting like chicken biryani. I've only been to this location, and we particularly appreciated the OUTSTANDING service - charming, cheerful, and efficient. This review is for the Kensington location. A friend implored me to go to this place on my fast trip to London so I had to try. Even though the earliest I could show up was 9pm, I was treated very well and seated almost immediately. The bar area is secluded, intimate, and within easy access to the rest of the restaurant. The service was incredible here. There were two servers who checked on me, and I really appreciated the detailed descriptions of all the best food items. Their specialty drinks were absolutely exquisite. I tried the Edwina's Affair which was a gin/rose/cardamom/mint concoction -- amazing! As soon as we sat the server came explained the menu which was printed using black color with dark background which was very hard to read and quickly explained what feast is, in no time they brought the starters which had kheema, pav and bhelpuri. The food was okay, eating bhel puri you will be already full for main courses. We ordered couple of wines which were expensive on the menu but had nothing to talk about. I am big wine lover. After we are done with starters they came with big Thaali which was mediocre and nothing much talk about. At last, we were little shocked at the bill because we felt really dum paying so much. I am very much used to going to fine dining in US and this not even worth comparing. it is outrageously expensive for what they offer. The ambiance is immaculate and romantic. Great experience here! We wanted to ensure we would have a table so we got a reservation for lunch (they don't take dinner reservations). We got there a bit early and so spent a little bit of time waiting for a table at their little bar. The place itself is beautiful inside. Really lovely atmosphere and well decorated. The tables do seem to be a biiiit close together. Their service was great. The food was also great! We got a few things - samosas, chicken tikka, dal, naan, and some rice. This Bombay-inspired restaurant has locations all throughout the UK and is definitely worth all of the hype it receives! From the unique cocktails to the delicious entrees to the sweet desserts, everything was incredible! We tried the Coloba Colada and Edwina's Affair for drinks during a short wait before being seated for dinner. For appetizers, we had the lamb samosas and chili chicken which were both super fresh and delicious! Finally, we got the garlic naan and Chicken Ruby (Basically like a chicken makhani) Every dish we had was great and to add to the incredible experience, the service at Dishoom was amazing! Okay...first of all, there are several sites of this restaurant, and there was a line for each one...for good reason! We had to wait less than 10 minutes and we requested to do so in the bar area...even with our 16 year old daughter. :0) We ordered drinks and we were seated before we even got them, but they brought them right to us! We started off our dinner with an appetizer...the shrimp, and they were a suggestion by our server. They didn't disappoint--spicy and perfectly cooked. We ordered garlic naan, ruby chicken, plain rice for the ruby chicken sauce, side broccoli salad, and the gun powdered potatoes. All were perfectly seasoned and full of Indian flavor! Dishoom seems to be the first recommendation for Indian food that anybody you ask mentions as "the place" to try when visiting London. I was luckily able to try out the Kensington location of Dishoom for lunch recently. I would have preferred dinner, but they don't offer dinner reservations for small parties, and are notorious for long waits during dinner time (even on weekdays), so lunch it was. The atmosphere, architecture, and design are easily a 5/5, so it's no wonder why so many love dining here. I can't claim to be an architecture expert, but it was almost a throwback to old Indian art deco style, with old brass fixtures you can't really find anymore. We weren't too hungry around lunchtime, but also wanted to try a variety of things, with this being our first Dishoom experience. The chocolate chai immediately jumped out at me, since I hadn't seen that on menus in Indian eateries, so went with that and the mango lassi. While presentation was excellent, the drinks failed to impress. I give them points for uniqueness of the chocolate chai, but the chocolate and hint of spice didn't add anything to the chai experience, and wasn't something I'd try again. I felt the mango lassi was way too light on the mango flavor, and while I like that it wasn't too sweet, it just didn't have that taste or texture a good mango lassi is supposed to have. We started off with a small plate of the chilli chicken. While it wasn't prepared fairly well and tasted good with just the right spice kick, I much prefer preparations of chilli chicken I find at some of the better Indian restaurants back home. For the meal, we went with the Ruby Chicken, and added both basmati rice and a naan, since main dishes don't include any of these accompaniments. This was definitely a solid presentation, with perfectly tender cooked chicken and delectable gravy with just the right amount of spice and flavor. If I was a local, this would definitely be one of my reliable go-to things to order. The naan and rice were both decent and well prepared, but nothing atypical from other restaurants. They pride themselves on service and while most the staff were great, our server did disappear at times, and did not give or offer us water until our mouths were feeling the heat/spice of the chilli chicken kick in, and we had to request it. I would think water is something you'd proactively offer all guests, especially if they're ordering anything remotely spicy. It was all a bit heavy and on the expensive side for lunch, but to be fair, we did try a variety of items to get a little taste of what was on offer. While the meal was good and everything was prepared well, it wasn't the best Indian food I've ever had. However, Dishoom is the type of place that would crack my list of Indian restaurants I'd put in my regular rotation if I lived nearby (which is a high compliment in and of itself), but just not a place I'd endure an extensive wait to have dinner at, especially given so many other great Indian restaurants in London that do dinner reservations. We arrived around 710 and got our names on the list around 720. We got seated around 9 PM. Unless you have a reservation more than likely you'll have to wait. The wait line is mostly outside but you get moved inside once there space at the bar. this place is hyped up by everyone. It came recommended by some friends and also a lot of the people in London, including multiple taxi/Uber drivers. I do think there's better Indian restaurants in London, but that's just my opinion. The prices are decent, not cheap, but not too expensive. The ambience is amazing for family or friends or large groups. The drinks are delicious and the service is stellar. The food is very average, i think. lots of people love it. I gave it four stars because of the ambience, drink and service were definitely five stars but the food is about a three. Widely considered a must-visit and considered by many to be a bona fide institution in the London dining scene. This was my second visit to the Kensington location and it remains a strong choice but wasn't as good as I remembered. TL;DR - apps were okay, curry and stewed mains are memorable. Apps: Chili Chicken - nothing special, not very spicy or crispy. Okra Fries - my favorite of the starters when dipped in the spiciest sauce but also nothing to write home about. Garlic Naan - fantastic but it always is, everywhere Mains: Black Daal - my favorite of the mains. Especially rich and flavorful here. Must-try if you like lentils. Monkfish Curry - the coconut curry base was delicious. The monkfish was great and not something you see often. Unique and flavorful, I recommend it if its on the specials rotation. Chicken Tikka - this is just the chicken without the masala sauce you're probably used to, so make sure to get the Ruby Chicken instead if you're looking for that. Ruby Chicken - Dishoom's spin on butter chicken/tikka masala. Has a bit of a red-wine-like sweetness and depth that I wasn't particularly fond of but others at my table loved it. I liked it best mixed with a little bit of the spiciest sauce. Lamb Biryani - while it was presented excellently with a puff pastry crust baked onto the top, I felt the rice and lamb inside were missing flavor and was overall too much starch and not enough oomf. Chicken Kathi Roll - good but needs sauce. Heavy and filling without a ton of flavor, similar to the biryani. The omelette in the wrap gives it a crepe-like taste. Atmosphere in there is cool with an art deco styling that makes it feel like a converted atomic age diner. Service was not great but it makes sense given the bustling Bombay vibe in there. The decor and ambience was so lovely. The low lighting and old school Indian movie style menu was so cute. We ordered the broccoli salad and okra fries for starters and they also gave us some papad with chutney. The okra was really crispy and flavorful. The broccoli salad was okay but didn't stand out that much. The tandoori chicken was really yummy and tender. The chole/halwa and puri were really nice but the standout dish has to be the black dal. We wandered in here for lunch based on other Yelp reviews (thanks, Yelpers!) and we couldn't have been more pleased. It was packed, but we got a table pretty quickly. I'd recommend a reservation if you're coming right at peak lunch or dinner hour. Service was quick and attentive despite the bustling atmosphere. We enjoyed a mutton curry, the 24 hour dal, the blistered greens, green tea, chai (two thumbs up on this pick, with a complimentary refill!), wine and beer. All were fantastic. I live in Seattle, Washington (a short plane ride from London), and we have a decent number of Indian restaurants and/or similar offerings and none of them hold a candle to Dishoom. If you're visiting London/the UK and you're looking for excellent Indian food, then I would highly recommend Dishoom to you. And there's great news too, because there are multiple locations across London, which I've been told are equally as good as the Kensington location, so you don't need to travel to this specific location to enjoy fantastic food. We were able to get a table for four with no wait at 5 on a rainy Monday night. Absolutely fabulous! The waitstaff were friendly and attentive. It seemed like everyone helped each other out. For example, people would clear things on our table as they walked by and the person who took our order would also clear and pour water.
