Long story short, I have known Chi for more than 7 years! I found him when he was working in Bianchi's hair salon. I've spent thousands of dollars trying to fix my hair after a shitty hair stylist bleached it, leaving stains all over my hair. Since then, I have never let someone touch my hair again. My hair is ash blond and healthy, thanks to Chi!!! He is the one and only. He's truly the best hairstylist in NYC!

Have been going to Chi for 6(!!!) years for a reason! He knows how to create beautiful and dimensional blondes on even the darkest of hair. Chi switches things up slightly with every session but always achieves perfect results. I get compliments on my hair multiple times a week, it's that legit. The salon itself is also a gorgeous and massive space. You can't go wrong with any of the stylists here. But I specifically recommend Chi if you have almost black hair and are looking to go light.

Found this salon through Salon Apprentice ad and if you don't know what Salon Apprentice is, then well you are missing out honey! You save money and you also help build an apprentice's portfolio at the same time! I love me a good deal and I'm on a budget too. I knew that this salon had some of the best owners who work on balayage/foilyage so I emailed JC right away once I saw the ad because I had no doubt that the apprentices would be taught well. Upon arrival, I notice that the salon was massive with a super cool hip vibe! Loved how it looks! Close to the Bowery St station on the J too. Upon arrival, I was temp checked and used sanitizer then I was able to put away my coat and use the rest room before seated. The hairstylists/clients were socially distanced and wearing masks. My hair hasn't been touched with dye since Feb 2019 nor cut since Dec 2019 so I have been overdue for one. Prior to the appointment, JC asked for inspo photos which I provided + he got to work! Chopped of 3-4 inches of old dyed hair, thinned my super thick hair and gave my hair the texture and color I wanted. JC was super sweet and always checked in. The end result was so good! I was very happy with how it turned out! The color makes me look tan too, which I'm not mad about! LOL This salon also has a selfie area with a ring light to show off your new hair! I need to get myself a ring light! LOL Be mindful that you will be here for at least 4 hours if you are going to do a whole transformation! Make sure to bring snacks! Overall, I would definitely come back as JC is talented and so are the rest of the stylists here at District87. You won't be disappointed!

I book a single hair coloring and instead receive an extremely messed up dye job. I even had set up a consultation, so you could assume that anything that couldn't be done would be explained to me right? Wrong. All these people want are money and lack the training to do (specifically women of color's) hair. I paid almost $300 just for me to dye my hair back to black after this and they refuse to refund me, as per their "policy" that is not listed anywhere :) Unless you want to essentially have to go somewhere else, or just have damaged hair in general, do not come here. Also, the owner took an entire month to get back to me because she was on vacation and couldn't be bothered. She has vacation money, but apparently not enough to refund me :)

I have been going to Chi for a few years now since his previous salon, Bianchi. He is truly an expert on bleaching and toning dark Asian hair. Over the years, I have gone from an ashy brown to a neutral golden bronde and my hair is still very healthy! Chi makes sure to take his time to ensure the roots and overall blend are always seamless, as well. The salon is very spacious and in a great location. Chi sometimes brings his adorable dogs as well which is always a treat!

update: within a few months, my hair was left super brittle, dry, and prone to tangles. it is now at the point of snapping every time i shower. This was my first time bleaching my hair and I was pretty worried about maintaining the integrity of my hair, and Ernesto assured me they use the gentlest bleach. However, my hair has been in a fragile and very distressed state since the coloring. (My friend who has bleached her hair for years went to him per my recommendation, and also experienced so much damage that she went back to her old colorist to correct it.) When I reached out to him about it, he immediately said it was "environmental and not chemical" and blamed poor aftercare - i was a little taken aback. he doesnt know how much time and care i put into my care, but what was important was that he didnt care to know. so. If you are worried about the integrity of fine/sensitive hair, i would recommend trying someone else who spends much more care, or has much more experience, with maintaining the integrity of fine hair. If I come in asking not to go too light because Im worried, maybe it isnt the best idea to encourage them to go lighter, etc.

(Thursday, 8/19/21) Finally was able to visit this salon! First off, it's a beautiful space- it's so clean, open and very spacious. It's very modern & everyone is so friendly and accommodating. My mom & I have had our hair done with Sofiya back in 2018-19 when they still had Bianchi salon. It had been a while, so it was nice to see her again! My mom had a half-head balayage with Sofiya and I had an in between half/full head balayage with Sonia. In Feb 2020 pre-covid, we each had our balayage at another salon we tried nearby us and both my mom's and my hair became dry. The ends were especially more dried out from over-bleaching & the products they used. Mine was more dried out because they had to re-do mine because the color was way too light. By this time, the color has faded a bit/toned down so it was time for something new! I was glad to come here and have Sonia work her magic to fix/add some fresh color and dimension to my hair after a long while. My appointment ended up being changed to an hour later, but it was totally understandable; Sonia was so nice and apologetic about it and both she & Cathy notified me beforehand. So I had time to chat & watch Sofiya get started with my mom's hair. Sonia was so sweet to talk to & she took a look at some pics of what I was going for, took the time to assess my hair and discuss ideas, which I liked! We decided on a bit subtle chocolate color but with light enough areas & face framing to still be noticeable. At first, I thought it turned out a little too subtle, but then as they blow dried and styled my hair at the end, I could see the color start to pop and it was what I was looking for! Diego was very good at styling my hair and I appreciated the time he took to do so. My mom was going for a warmer tone from her previous color. Sofiya was the one who suggested she could achieve the results with even a half-head balayage& she was right! The perfect amount of color was there and we both loved how it turned out- it really brightens when in the natural sunlight. Sofiya took the time to style her hair too and in the end, came out so beautiful! We love how our hair feels after they style our hair. It's a such a contrast to our experience at the previous salon we went to. I think it's the quality of the products they use plus the care they take with each client's hair. Thank you so much again to Sofiya and Sonia for taking care of us and we look forward to visiting you guys again!! Can't wait to see this team & salon grow!!

Chi is the bomb! Not only is he funny, but extremely talented and knowledgeable about his craft. He is honest and will be direct with how genuinely far he can take your hair. He managed to take me from a medium level 6 to golden blonde in my first session with him, all while preserving the integrity of my hair! Haven't looked back since. He now has taken me to an icy, stark balayage ombré that I'm obsessed with and receive compliments like crazy about, even from strangers off the street! If you want high-quality, cutting edge, yet effortless hair- this place is for you. With Chi and Sofiya the helm, you cannot go wrong. Abby was AMAZING. Due to a bad bleach incident years ago I had to stop coloring my hair for almost two years and am frequently told by other stylists they can't achieve the color I'm looking for, so I'm always left with hair that's too warm and not light enough. I was able to get a same day appointment due to a cancellation. She listened to exactly what I wanted and achieved the tone I wanted and my hair doesn't feel brittle or dried out. Plus she is super sweet. So happy I found her!!

I had my first hair dying experience at this Salon! And I can tell you I was so nervous to do it but I had heard about them from Tik Tok and my nurse friends also recommended the salon, so I took a chance on Chi! And I am SO HAPPY with the results! He was very attentive and nice and made me feel super comfortable sitting in his chair. He recommended a cut before I dyed it and I showed him a couple pictures of what I was thinking for color and he gave me his suggestion which I loved and trusted him to do. So I posted my before (black hair) to chocolate brown hair and I will be coming back in later months to get it lightened just in time for summer! District 87 salon & staff are THE BEST! The salon is so edgy and energetic the minute you step in. They are following COVID-19 protocol to keep everyone safe. Everyone is so welcoming, sweet, and fun to talk to as you're getting your hair done-very down to earth people! Sonia did my hair today (has been for the past two years..) and was able to fulfill my vision of having a blonde/honey blonde color!!! She always listens to what I would like and really does her best to make it happen considering where I'm starting at. My hair has kept it's healthy appearance no matter how many times I've colored it. Top quality is always delivered with Sonia--you will not be disappointed. She's so sweet and funny to talk to! Let me start off by saying I never leave reviews, but the amazing service, quality, and compliments I have received with my new color has completely transformed my confidence. Chi literally changed and restored my hair! I have always wanted to go blonde and never got the results I wanted. He told me the process and the amount of sessions needed to complete what I wanted. He did that and more!!! His staff are so incredibly talented and welcoming, and not to mention the beauty of the new salon!!! It is breathtaking, sleek, and edgy! I've been coming here for years. Chi tang is amazing! He took me from black hair to ashy beautiful blonde in a few visits. I travel an hour from NJ just to see him. He is so knowledgeable in how to treat the hair properly so it still stays healthy after so much bleaching. I would highly recommend him. Everyone there is really great. I don't usually write reviews, but because I love Chi and everyone at the salon (especially those I've met from Bianchi) I just had to! Honestly one of the best hair stylists and salons I've ever gone to. I always walk out of the salon feeling beautiful and more confident than ever. I trust Chi and everyone so much that whenever I come in for my appointment I would tell them to do whatever they wanted, which I don't usually say to just anyone! If you're also looking for a stylist to talk about life with, Chi never disappoints! He's literally my stylist and therapist in one! Lol. I've been coming to Chi since the Bianchi days ( his former salon). I think its been 6 years now of him doing my hair. He's truly the best! District 87 is Chi's new baby that reflects how far he's come as a stylist and business owner. He's constantly educating himself while making sure his team is happy and having so much fun doing it. We have a BLAST every-time I come to get my hair done which always ends with a hug and a great story. I am so grateful to have someone I trust with my hair while in turn making such a great friend! District 87 salon is the place you need to go if you want beautiful hair. His whole team is unmatched!! read more

Complete lack of Empathy. When I walked in and the hair dresser examined my hair I showed her an imagine of what I wanted. This being a golden blonde balayage, I do admit I walked in with a previous job done which was very brassy and had some dark brown tones. She explained that it can be done, which made me feel comfortable that I would walk out with a golden blond balayage. Once the foils came off she applied a toner and I was seated back in the styling chair. When the hair dresser started to blow dry my hair she noticed how dark and ashy my hair was. I immediately noticed the change , she requested I went back to the washing station to apply more BLEACH ?!! I told her no, because I felt that my hair had gone through enough. She said that my hair felt "weird" and that the toner had gotten my hair to dark. But as a hair dresser should you know the timing of how long to leave a toner on? All of this by viewing the color the bleach lifted? I told her that my hair was extremely dark she then stated She wanted to get a second opinion by her co worker ( who I am assuming is the owner, but I do not know because she never introduced herself). This woman said if we blew dry my hair it would be lighter ( wrong) it never became lighter. She then stated that the dark black areas of my hair could be lifted. I did not want to spend more hours , since I had already been sitting for 6 with the bleaching and application process. She then stated my ends were to squared I had a weird hair cut ( rude) that once I had my trim I would see a difference. At this point my trust for the hair dresser was GONE. She then stated I wash my hair with shampoo really hard (her exact words) and I could come back in two weeks ? At this point I was just overwhelmed by the 6 hours sitting on the chair and the 400 dollars I had spent on a job that was NOTTT what I wanted or asked for. She lacked empathy and obviously only cared about the money. I never say the original hair dresser again , didn't even apologize for what she had done. I understand that working on previous jobs is a challenge, and as a hair dresser who deals with people images should be honest. If you do not honestly think the job can be done , please let the customer know! This way the customer Can debate and make their decision. CHI IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in hair heaven!!!!!! I came in with horrible sad hair color, and I left looking like a million bucks!!!!! Not only did he nail the color I wanted, but he provided the upmost professional service!! He explained everything he was doing to my hair step by step, along with hair care advice. Sofiya is an absolute master at cuts and color. I've gone both lighter and slightly darker with her, and love both outcomes. Her cuts are insane, the best I've had in my eight years of living in the city. The type of cut that even if you don't live here you'll fly in for. Daisy is absolutely fantastic! She pays extremely close attention to detail, and always does a superb job on my hair. I have been seeing Sofiya since her days at Bianchi and she never disappoints. Her new salon is amazing and clean. She is a amazing hair stylist and colorist. Sofiya is friendly and listens to all of her clients' recommendations. I was always hesitant to go to a new stylist (before Sofiya I went to someone for 15 years). Sofiya is THE BEST colorist I've ever had! I went through a lot of bad blonde looks trying to find a good colorist in NYC throughout the years and gave up a few years back and went back to my natural dark Asian hair. This summer I decided to give it another shot and went to Sofiya (when she was at a different salon) and so glad I did! She is an expert and a magician. In one session, she transformed my dark hair to a beautiful ashy blonde...and it was EXACTLY what I asked for. Today I went in to refresh and lighten my highlights to an icy ash blonde and once again, my hair turned out perfect. While I was there, I watched the other stylists do beautiful work as well. The salon is clean with a modern/edgy vibe, and even has a selfie room with great lighting. The best part is, there was a 3 month old Shiba Inu puppy I got to hold for an hour. I got highlights from Chi. He is such a dream to work with, he completely delivered on the results. The entire team is super sweet and the space is beautiful- sun drenched and glamorous in the heart of soho. High ceilings for air circulation, and because the space is so huge spacing for COVID was plenty. 12 feet away from other clients at least! You can book a treatment here and rest assured your hair and your health will be safe. Will definitely be returning for any touch ups or to go blonder! read more

Always asking if I was comfortable or if I needed some water. Not to mention she stayed open during a snow storm and didn't cancel my appointment. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Amazing salon with talented staff. The salon is very large and I felt very safe as they are taking COVID-19 precautions. This is the second time I have gone to Sonia and she never disappoints :) Went from having dark virgin hair to a beautiful balayage. Highly recommend this place, especially if you are going for a big change. I've been going to Chi Tang for the past year and a half. Each time I drove 3.5 hours from upstate New York to get my hair cut and balayage from the best colorist/ stylist in NYC. Chi will always give you a honest, professional and realistic consultation on what would look best on you. I have early onset grey hair genes and I came in wanting a chocolate brown balayage which would only accentuate the unwanted grey hair. Chi suggested strategically placing honey colored lowlights and highlights and the results were stunning. Chi is a genuinely kind hearted person and will give you his undivided attention. Both Sofiya & Chi are amazing and talented stylists, and I am so proud and excited that they have their own salon together! Their work is remarkable and they are straight and upfront with their clients which is so necessary in this field. If you're thinking of becoming a customer or just aren't sure if what you want is feasible, definitely book a consultation. They'll let you know what works best for you! Their services truly are catered to each individual customer. I have been a client of Sofiya's for AT LEAST five years and I trust her completely! She is the only person I go to for coloring. I have had countless bayalage and custom toning sessions with her. Each and every time my hair comes out amazing. I honestly have been stopped on the street (several times) and have been asked where I go to get my hair done. I just went to their new salon on Bowery to get my hair toned and cut and I of course love it! Also, their new salon is big and spacious. They took all the proper safety precautions to ensure a safe visit: from temperature checks, face mask and social distancing between clients. They are absolutely amazing! read more

You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. I recently moved to NYC from Chicago and ever since I've been searching for a hair stylist that can give me golden/caramel highlights that can make me blonder/lighter overall but did not want it to be overwhelming and platinum blonde. It might sound like an easy task in NYC but believe me it's very hard nowadays, especially to find a salon where you feel comfortable. I'm also super picky....I've noticed a lot of salons are either scared of doing a light of highlights and just do a few or they over do it. After searching for several days and countless consultations at salons that didn't feel like a good fit, I finally came across Chi on IG and couldn't be happier that I did. I saw his work on IG and I was super impressed and booked an appointment right away. I saw all the positive reviews on google and yelp and wanted to put it to the test and see if it's real or a hype. Let me tell y'all it's REAL. First of all Chi is SUPER humble and down to earth. He's easy to talk to and listens to exactly what you're looking for. I've never seen a stylist who is as patient as him too. Right away he makes you feel comfortable and the salon has a really nice vibe, super clean and chic unlike so many other salons in NYC that are small and congested. Everyone is welcoming and warm. In one session Chi was able to give me that sun kissed golden hair color look I've been craving for the summer. I've been trying so hard to get this same color for the LONGEST time in Chicago and it's been unsuccessful. In Chicago do a few pieces of highlights and call it a full when it's nowhere near a full. Chi gave me the complete value of what I paid for (full lightening) and exceeded my expectations. They use super high quality products at his salon so my hair didn't feel dry or brittle. He also gave me an amazing blowout so I could see the color even better. You all don't know how hard it is to find a stylist who just gets it. I'm beyond grateful for this experience and super glad I've met my new go to stylist in NYC who I know will always do an amazing job. I found Chi Tang on Instagram, and I loved his personality and his clients' before and after transformation photoI booked him immediately, and in one session, he transformed my hair from straight black to an ashy blonde.
