Most awkward and disturbing part: ***Was not willing to receive feedback on the cut after having me look at it in the mirror. Became very cold (disdainful?) and told me he didn't have time when I started to explain what I didn't like.*** Also, awkward setting, no one else at all in the salon. When I asked if he has other people ever working in the salon, he got defensive. "Why does it matter?" Not a great cut, more an average one. I can't get my hair cut where I live because every time has been a slight disaster -- and I don't ask for much. Visiting NYC meant it was on my list to get a haircut but I hadn't planned ahead and was frantically searching for a salon the night prior. Tsumiki was the first that came up and after checking a few other places, decided to call them up the next day to see if I could get a spot in. They only take appointments but I was lucky to get a spot at 12 noon the same day so I made my way over. I was greeting promptly by Yuki who asked me what I was looking for, made a few recommendations and we came to an agreement on what would work for me. After a quick wash, Yuki meticulously cut my hair section by section and expertly blow dried my hair to a beautiful shape -- seriously a beautiful hair cut can change your demeanor faster than the most delicious dessert. I kid you not I had walked in with the most atrocious and what I thought to be the most unsalvageable haircut from another salon. Having read the reviews I decided Tsumiki could fix what the other salon failed so miserably to do. AND I WAS RIGHT. Yuki is kind and patient and really took the time to understand what I wanted (I had a reference picture and he really took time to understand it and with his experience right off the bat he knew what techniques were used to achieve that look) and what about my previous haircut I did not like - which was almost everything. To paint the picture I had uneven layers everywhere and my hair was in ruins. Yuki was able to turn that mess to a fun short, airy, and light bob for the summer. I also have incredibly thick hair, but Yuki was still able to cut my hair perfectly. Even after the first wash my hair still dried perfectly. Yuki is an absolute artist. Like many people, I always have reservations with trying someone new. However, my best friend (with AMAZING hair) has been seeing him for ten years - she did not steer me wrong! I wanted a subtle and bleach-free balayage and a haircut. My hair has been virgin for over ten years and I was pleasantly surprised that Yuki actually advocated to not color my hair because he loved my natural color and I didn't want anything drastic. I haven't applied color to my hair in over ten years because of dye-related trauma in my teenage years and I was concerned about damage. The products and process Yuki followed totally restored my faith in the industry. The salon is quaint and gorgeous. I was offered my choice of fresh tea and decided on white. I am not sure why others had a five-star experience. I never had a good experience at Tsumiki. He pulled on my hair when washing and cutting my hair, which seems to be a pattern judging by the other reviewer's recent complaint. Really bad attitude as if he knows better than me about my hair and I should either leave or let him do what he does (that's different from what I wanted.) No other hairstylist I've worked with ever was like him! He also likes to ask a lot of personal questions during hair cutting, which I didn't initiate. I like to say that Yuki styles, colors and cuts hair like Michelangelo painted !! Honestly, you won't find a better balance between quality, care, price and ambience at any other salon in Manhattan!! When I went to Yuki my hair was literally breaking from too many cycles of highlighting and a balayage. But I did not want to loose the color nor the length. Yuki literally nursed my hair back, highlighting it gently and gorgeously with organic color. Yuki was very honest about the blonde tone that he could achieve with organic color. He explained that ashy blonde was tough to achieve without chemicals but he was able to give me blonde highlights that were still close to the ashy color that I wanted and my hair feels so much healthier now that I switched back to organic highlights. I've been a customer of Yuki's since 1998. I'm lucky to have found him long ago (at another salon). I can't say enough good things about him. He is very patient and works with you to understand what you want, and what works best for you. I wouldn't (and haven't) gone anywhere else since I found him, and I don't know what I'd do if he ever retires. I had another great experience at the Tsumiki Hair Salon on East 9th Street in the East Village. Unlike other places I've been, this salon is highly consistent with their cuts and color. They take just as much time with a trim as with a new style; which is to say each layer, each strand is done right. And, in my experience, the style looks natural and will last a long time. They use a lovely natural hair color system which has really nice results. I also wanted some highlights and was treated to the latest and best Japanese products. So now I am a "natural blonde" with a little help from my friends at Tsumiki. I particularly like it a lot because it's a very friendly place. Both Satsuki, who is my stylist, and the owner, Yuki, are genuinely kind and fun to be around. Plus it's interesting to go out in the East Village. Their skilled hair cutting and coloring are what keeps me coming back. But it's fun and friendly and reasonably priced to boot, and that makes the whole experience enjoyable. Satsuki is the most awesome person! Not too chatty, she gives you your space and her hands are super gentle. I always fall asleep when I come here. I wake up and my hair looks fabulous. Have been going here for almost 7 years now. She's a great colorist too. I had my hair colored by someone else there when she was on vacation and it did not look the same even though he copied her notes about my hair. Love that they keep notes about past hair colors and styles. She is the only one allowed to cut my hair and I stand by it since the other person cut my hair when she was on vacation and it was never the same. They also have the best green tea! read more
