Thank goodness for Dixie Chili being open until 11:00pm! Hailing from Newport, the city of late night diners, I had a culture shock when visiting friends in Erlanger and all the restaurants closed at 9:00pm on the weekend. Bizarre! We pulled into the deserted drive thru around 9:30pm and ordered our usuals: turkey club sandwich, Greek fries, and a three way. As we approached the window to pay, that's when things got weird. The drive thru window was more secure than a bank. It had a speaker box, bullet proof glass, and a metal drawer slot through which you passed money and received food. I tried paying with a credit card and was asked to show my ID... for our whopping $13.00 bill. Really? Is chili fraud so rabid in Erlanger that this is necessary? After paying, we waited about 15 minutes for our food to arrive. My friend comedically asked, "Hey, did we eat already?" Fortunately, our food was hot and delicious, just like our home Dixie Chili restaurant in Newport. I'm still baffled at the security needed at the drive thru window. As a newbie to the Chilli realm, or that would say to what is labelled as Chilli in these parts of the world. Because I have had Chilli con carne many many times all over the world, and my first time eating "tristate" chilli was at Dixie Chilli in Erlanger. I did not know what to expect, except that it would be spicy, the name kind of implies that. But I was wrong, the Tri state version of chilli has nothing to do with spicy hot food, which still puzzles me. I can truly say that after trying both skyline, Goldstar and Camp Washington Chilli, Dixie Chilli beats them all by a long shoot. It has better flavour and the spaghetti is not soaky like at skyline. Not to mention they have the Alligator, which you will have to experience for yourself, but it is good. The only complaint I have is that it would be nice with some better service minded people. Every time I have been there, the people preparing the food, really looked like they did not give a F*ck. I understand dishing out chilli as a full time job, might not be the most exciting thing in the world, but maybe they could at least pretend while I am looking directly at them... All and all I have been accustomed to enjoy, this strange fusion of a dish, that I believe is found nowhere else in America or the world for that matter. Because I have lived in Minneapolis for 1.5 years, and never heard of Skyline/gold star, who is the big dogs in this chilli game... First impression of Tri state chilli, from a foreigners perspective. 3 way: Spaghetti, no problem seen that before. Non spicy hot meat sauce, but with hint of herbs and spices(why in the world do you call it chilli then?) Cheese, cheese, cheese and more cheese! What is it with all that cheese? Drive-thru vegetarian chili-cheese (waffle) fries on a rainy Monday morning = deliciously perfect! This was some of the best veg. chili I've ever had. The use fake meat crumble and it totally worked. We were in Cincy for the weekend and decided we had to have chili since it seems to be the thing to eat there. There were Skylines everywhere, but after looking at their menu, their veggie option just didn't seem super appealing since I wasn't in a beany mood. Dixie Chili is a beanless vegetarian chili and it was delicious. It tasted sweet and spicy (as in all spice, not hot). I like a good Cincinnati style chili but I found Dixie pretty bland. The waffle fries were good, as previous reviewers have said, and they do pile the cheese on - but the chili itself was watery and had little flavor. I round up to 3 stars because they have a pretty extensive menu so people who don't like their chili might like their deli foods. The restaurant was friendly, clean and pretty inexpensive. read more

I've been visiting this location since I was a little girl...um 30 odd years ago! Now I take my little one. The food is good--it's the service that has changed at this location. Even 5 years ago, you could still get the older waitresses, that really knew what they were doing. Courteous, efficient, sweet. Now...well, it's different. Each time I go, I order: 2 coneys (not a CHEESE coney--I know, unheard of!), and a chili cheese sandwich for my little one; sometimes I get the vege soup, sometimes I get the greek salad (which I think is overpriced) and often, the lettuce is browning. Regardless, I am ALWAYS charged for a cheese coney, and when I bring it to their attention, it seems to create a hullabuloo where they have to "figure out" the money I get back. If they'd just listen in the first place, it would be fine and dandy.... I love Dixie Chili, but I'm not in love with this location. Never have a problem in Newport!!!! read more

Now trying to take personal bias out of this review is difficult for me (know that) but I preach the good word of Dixie with the full faith that one bite and you'll understand. And in the great chili war of southwest Ohio, one bite can be a mighty big leap of faith. So I'll come at you from this angle. Dixie isn't just 3-ways and 4-ways. Dixie is a chili parlor that packs a full, delicious menu. Take in a huge selection, with items like greek fries, soups, salads, and a deli that could take off and open its own location. Ok, have you ever had an order come back wrong? Well I haven't, you know why? 'Cause I eat at Dixie Chili, where the staff work hard to make sure you items are hot and come out as what you ordered. You can see the entire staff making your food in a clean environment. (that carries over to the dining and restrooms) Now we'll approach the drive-thru in a sensitive manor, because I'll be the first to tell you it's their weak point. I know it, they know it, an any other review will point it out so we'll address the elephant in the room by just saying don't order Cincy chili from a drive-thru period, even if you do it from a Skyline. So I'll wrap this up by saying grab a tray, take your time with the menu, and don't be afraid to let Dixie Chili whip up your favorite Cincinnati-style foods, because they'll do them justice, and they'll have you back before sundown. read more

The young girl with red hair working the drive thru was very sweet. But, today the food was awful. There was grease from both the chili and the cheese stuck to the styrofoam containers. And the buns were very soggy and just unpleasant. The presentation of the 3-ways weren't the best and there was chili all down the side of the container. When we had called to inform the manager of the issue she said "that's just our cheese. It happens sometimes." .. well i feel otherwise. And I was charged for two chili cheese coneys but they skipped the hotdogs and when it came time to pick the cheese off the bun just to see if it would the bun stuck to the chili and cheese until it slopped off onto the container while the barely there chili and gross cheese were stuck together still in mid air. Also my chili had very crunchy bits (just spaghetti chili and cheese) and my spaghetti noodles were quite crunchy! For it being $27 I'm surely taking a loss and never going back! The manager has no idea of how to be reasonable nor even kind of apologetic.. she must have never heard "just give them the pickle" phrase. I work in the food industry I'd never argue with a customer about what was wrong nor right. Won't be going back. And just for a time frame... I live maybe under 5 mins away! I've had chili twice in Florence at Dixie and one of the other chain type places. It must be a long tradition in the Cincinnati area to have chili because the actual quality of what passes for good chili here is sub par. At Dixie I paid $9.50 for a bowl of chili with a large bag of chopped onions,cheese and crackers and sour cream. Half of the chili was spaghetti and the chili was most likely out of a 5 gallon bucket. read more

As good as Chili gets!!! I just arrived to this big city about 3 and half years ago and didn't know what all the fuss was about - I had Skyline and Gold Star, but THEN I had Dixie...ohhhh the Dixie. Now, no offense to the the dedicated Goldie and Skyline fans, but good ole' Dixie has this Cincinnati Greek style Chili perfected to a tee. My ultimate favorite - Greek Salad accompanied by a monstrous pile of their signature Chili Cheese Waffle fries!!! Lip smacking good (Newport's has amazingly convenient late/bar hours too)!!! I've been here a few times for lunch. It is SO fast! There is a board with menu options, you order at the counter, walk down the line and they hand you your food at the end. I appreciate that Gold Star & Skyline offer hot sauces- but this place has a variety of hot sauce to choose from: Frank's, Texas Pete, and an unknown (perhaps Dixie Chili) brand. I personally appreciate the choices. The first time- I got a coney and a gyro. The gyro was alright- but I knew I would stick to the coneys in the future. The coneys are literally piping hot! The bread was so soft & fresh it melted in my mouth and the chili is not as sweet as other local options- which I really like! The second time- I went coney all the way. My only complaint was that they went a little too heavy on the onions for me. I like onions- but not quite as many as they added this go round. Next time- maybe I'll actually try the chili on spaghetti... but maybe I won't. What I do know is that there will be a next time! read more

Staff were very pleasant especially for having to work the late night shift. Customers were even very friendly. Food was served quickly, fresh and hot. Being from Canada the chili was really unlike any that I have ever had before. The cinnamon would take a little getting used to but I would take the time. Being a transplant to Cincinnati, this whole chili war thing is mostly just amusing to me. I tried Skyline first and thought oh ok, this isn't bad but I'm not sure what's wrong with these people...it's just a hot dog with some runny chili and cheese. Then I met That Boy. He insisted I hadn't had good chili because I hadn't been to Dixie. He was right. I enjoy Dixie Chili much more than Skyline, and I've gotten my family in Carolina addicted too. But the thing I really love at Dixie? Not the chili. Without fail my standard meal is a small chef salad and an alligator, Diet Coke. I LOVE the alligator. Its a hot dog with a pickle and mayo and cheese and it's just like sunshine jelly for your tummy. Moving on from that . I also am a big fan of the greek fries when I'm not trying to watch calories. They are delicious, warm waffles fries with greek dressing and crumbly feta. The restaurant is always clean and usually they get your order right the first time. You order at the counter and then slide down with your tray to pick up your goods. Or if you are me, you have a handsome guy get your food while you pick out a booth. It's nice being pretty. Anyways. If you order fries they make them fresh for you and bring them out to your table. The only negative I have is the drive thru. I would not suggest it. WOW! We had a 3 hour layover at the Cincinnati/Covington airport and have some friends in the area so we called them up for lunch. Rather than head to Chili's or some other generic restaurant we decided to get some of the "local food". A quick search led to the discovery of "Cincinnati Chili" which I had never heard of so we went off to Dixie Chili! Between us we had the 6-way chili, Greek salad, and the cheese fries. The chili was like nothing that I've ever experienced before - and I'm quite familiar with chili from the Southwest, Northeast, and the Upper Midwest. This chili was served over *spaghetti noodles* and was not hot-spicy in the slightest. The chili is flavored with cinnamon and cloves and has a taste slightly reminiscent of Indian food. Finely ground beef was added to the mix, and it was topped with about 2 cups of shredded Cheddar cheese. I had to dig through the Cheddar to get to the chili! The Greek salad was OK, nothing too exciting. It was quite an interesting experience - I wasn't a huge fan of the spaghetti noodle base but the flavors were unique! read more

This is a small hometown chili parlor, the atmosphere is clean and comfortable. It has pictures of the 'good ole days' to remind them as well as you how long they've been in business and how far they've come. It is the BEST chili by far over Skyline or Gold Star. They have an extensive menu as well if your not in the mood for chili but the rest of your group is. I'd highly recommend this place. I grew up on this stuff and still can't get enough of it! So go order up, grab your tray and find you a nice seat near the window to take in the Erlanger, Ky scenery. read more

The first thing I want to say is that the food at Dixie Chili is quite good, and that is the only reason I put up with it at all. The chili is definitely superior to Skyline Chili, and they don't stint on the portion sizes most of the time. The menu standout is the Greek Fries, homemade waffle fries covered in feta cheese and greek dressing. Very tasty. The problem, and it is a big one, that keeps me away most of the time is the service. This restaurant just cannot get its act together and never has for the five years I've been visiting. Something is always wrong with our order, whether it's in-house or takeout. Their worst problem is forgetting side items like fries, but I've had orders of chili forgotten as well. We went in this past weekend with out of town friends, and were embarrassed when it took more than 15 minutes for the kitchen to finish three orders of Greek Fries to go with the meal. For quick-service food, that's practically an eternity, and the restaurant was nearly empty. It seemed as though nobody in the kitchen had a strong idea of what was going on, and there was not an efficient production line in place. This restaurant could easily get four stars if it spruces up the service. Until then, only visit if your frustration threshold is high and you're not in a hurry. Then: Being a native of Newport and born in the fifties I grew up eating at Dixie Chili Parlor on Monmouth Street. My family moved away but every time we came back to Kentucky we had to stop in Newport for some coneys and a 3 way. As a young adult I went into the military and you know - it didn't matter where I was in the world at Christmas I was always sent some Dixie Chili. Not sure who sent it but it was always there every year. Now: I am back in Northern Kentucky fifty plus years later and guess what I still enjoy - yelp - Dixie coneys and a 3 way. I enjoy Dixie so much that the location I work at which is a global company which has great diversity as far as employees goes that we frequently talk about the style of chili and the different chains in the area. So we were going to have our monthly luncheon which is normally pizza or something of the sort and I proposed we have cheese coneys from Dixie. At first the other leadership team members laughed - and then when they realized I was totally serious they agreed to at least let me investigate the possibility. This provided the perfect opportunity to prove that Dixie was far better than Gold Star or Skyline. The next day I called the Erlanger location and spoke with Mark who manages this location. After explaining to him the situation and how I had challenged the other leadership team members to try Dixie for themselves and then decide if they thought this was the best chili parlor and sharing some conversation about his and my earlier lives we agreed to see how this might work out for both parties concerned. I provided the number of people we were going to need to feed which was 90 and the next day we spoke again. Amazingly Mark figured out how to make this work and may I add with a price which was well within what we wanted to spend. Well the day came for the luncheon - one slight problem came up that morning - we realized that we had people that don't eat meat. I immediately got on the phone to Mark and explained the issue - not to worry he said - we can cover it. He told me about the different options for people who are not meat eaters and issue taken care. A few hours later the food shows up - hot enough to melt the cheese which was provided in separate baggies so people could decide for themselves how much cheese they wanted on their coneys. After everyone had eaten I listened to many of their comments. Many were wowed by the difference in the other chains and Dixie. Not one complaint did I hear - not one. GREAT job Mark and team. Papa Nick and your family have every reason to be proud of the way you are continuing to grow and confirm the great reputation of Dixie Chili Parlor. We have been frequenting Dixie Chil for more than 30 years, always a great chili. When a child, I order a bowl of plain chili w/3 plain chili buns. Love it, for ever. Then my husband would visit the Madison Ave in Covington location. We got the standard, 4 way with onion, and a cheese coney, yummy. But we visited about a month ago the same location and found they may have added too much salt to the batch of chili. It was hard to enjoy, we were unhappy. We didnt say anything to anyone. Friday night, Oct 21, 2011, we went to Dixie Chili in Elsmere, KY on Dixie Highway. We used the drive through, for the first time, we ordered 8 chili cheese coneys, again there was too much salt in the chili. I do hope they have not changed the recipe it would be terrible not to get to eat our favorite chili in Kentucky....I hope someone from the inside investigates this matter, I dont want to stop eating at Dixie Chili. Dixie Chili in Erlanger has the best chili in NKY/Cincinnati, hands down. Always hot, always tasty, the cheese is flavorful and not oily. The place is clean, friendly decor and usually fast. The menu is also very large and varied. Don't like chili? Go anyway. You're going to find something you like. This is the only chili place I will visit. read more
