This will be a review about the salon, but I have to thank Ms. Gina for always taking so much care to bring my vision to fruition. My whole family has followed her since the days of Hair Shapers at Town and Country in Palo Alto. She is such a hard worker and makes sure her customers are happy. I have been dying to get a haircut and I knew exactly where I was going as soon as it was safe to do so. During this era of SIP orders, the salon is taking the proper measures to temperature check clients and answer a questionnaire for contact tracing. There are plastic guards around the washing stations and between spaces. Everyone is masked and abiding to social distancing. They sanitize the area after every shampoo and after completing the services. You can see all the wipes, alcohol, and sanitizer everywhere. Of course the parking situation can be tough right now because Santa Cruz is closed off for the outdoor dining in front of the salon for the neighboring restaurants. They are still catching up on their normal clients, but seem to also be taking walk ins considering the other counties haven't completely reopened. I think they're doing what they can to keep people safe when it's not the easiest to do in this kind of field. It will always be my go to for making a gal feel like a lady again. read more

Amidst the pandemonium of the "shelter in place" I tried to rush in to get my hair cut - it was already long overdue and I was worried about going for another three weeks without the opportunity to have it trimmed. Although I got there late and they were technically closing, Mary (the last person left) called another stylist to cut my hair. The other stylist drove from Sunnyvale especially to help me. I came here to see Debra "Debbie" Dias, and I'm absolutely thrilled to have taken the chance here. I needed to get a wash, blow dry and flat iron for New Year's Eve and I called the day before to set up an appointment. Was able to get in for a late morning, which was perfect as I'm definitely not an early morning person! The salon is spacious and comfy, and are pretty standard as far as the seat style, mirrors and lighting go. You do not need to feel like your personal bubble is intruded on by the other clients. I think my one wish was that the hair washing stations change their seats to include the pull-out leg rests as I'm a short person and it's a little hard on my back to have my feet resting on the ground while having my hair washed. Other than that, facilities are fine. You can tell that Debbie has been here for a long time as she seems to have the most varied amounts of products at her station than anyone else. The flat iron she used even vibrates (and don't worry, I didn't feel it vibrating, I could just tell that it was from how it sounded)! I have thick, coarse, Polynesian hair so it was such a relief that not only was my hair silky smooth but it also lasted the entire evening and next day. I'm unsure about the rest of the salon but Debbie only takes cash or check. I ended up writing her a check because I just don't carry cash on me these days. Was a relief that she didn't look at me weird for choosing the check option :) The price is reasonable and she does a great job. Made sure to tip her well! Pro Tip: This is a great location if you have an electric car, as the parking lot near here has Chargepoint charging stations! read more

My family has followed Eric Xa from Hair International to D.J.'s. His cuts take a good 7-10 years off my age, which beats electing to Botox, "lift" or chemical peel (ieeee!) which I'd been starting to take a look at (and run screaming away after looking at the pictures). Even my "tween" son remarked that I looked "young" and "pretty" when Eric first corrected my hair. Who knew a haircut could make that much of a difference? The hair cuts he does for my kid don't show notches, irregular hairs about the ears, and all the other awkward oddities that make taking a kid for a hair cut such an adventure. He has an excellent eye for color. The stylists I used previously for many years charged me an arm and a leg (and a LOT of time) for streaks, etc. that aged and reduced wallet. He is thoughtful. He suggested Sunday for my kid when I'd typically not think a second about throwing my kid solo into a large crowd of adults in a loud place to get his hair cut. DJ's is more spacious than typical salon, so one does not feel so immersed in chemical products used by nearby stylists to point where it's like you're imbibing or embalmed in it, noise decibel level better than average, ambiance more subtle (less stridently commercial) than typical salon. So, I've been getting my hair cut on the Peninsula since ... um ... well, since I moved to the Peninsula in 1988! I stopped in at the Hairshapers Club in the Town & Country center in Palo Alto because it was nearby -- I rode my bike. Saw a hairdresser named Alicia there for years, but then she moved out of the country. So, I asked her whom else in the salon SHE would go to. Gina, without hesitation. Well, several years and a few hairstyles (but no color changes) later, the Hairshapers Club is going, going, gone -- please tell me it's not ANOTHER landlord-jacking-the-rent-up story! -- and the best of the bunch have moved to DJ's in Menlo Park. Now, DJ's is a nice place, but it definitely attracts the Menlo/Atherton older-lady set. It just has an "old" conservative feel about it. Gone are the photos of people's kids plastered on the mirrors & booths. It's a little too civilized and not where I would go in search of hip style. But Gina still rocks, and no one else is allowed to touch my hair. She'd get a full 5 stars, if I could give her a personal listing. I drove an hour to see her this weekend. read more

DJ's Hair Design is one of those salons that rents out chairs to independent hair stylists, so my review is not actually for the salon itself but for Diana Furmanbetova, one of the hairstylists who works there. Diana is absolutely fantastic! I've been going to get my haircuts with her for several years now (can't remember exactly how many). My hair is a little longer than shoulder-length and most hairstylists spend about 5 minutes with me to trim the split ends and, well, that's it. Diana takes her time and comes up with something new and original every time so that I feel like a new person when I exit the salon, which is why I go there in the first place. I also always ask that I need my hair to be low maintenance--no creams, gels or hairspray, no flat irons, etc. I just don't have either the time or the desire to spend my time on it in the morning. Plus I feel that my hair will be healthier if I avoid extra chemicals and scorching. I think there are many hairstylists who can create something new with your hair, given enough product. But it takes a real master to cut in a way that no product is needed. Finally, Diana is very reasonably priced. A haircut is only $35 (I think). Rates are obviously subject to change, so make sure you find out what she is charging before you book. I've been recommending Diana to all of my friends for years and thought I would go "public" with it now. :-) A word of warning, if you don't have at least an hour to spend, don't bother--Diana takes her time, so a haircut will be at least an hour and if want highlights or anything else, allow even more time. Oct 1, 2021 - high temperature in Menlo Park was 88 degrees. I arrived early for my 3 pm appointment, and was seen 10 minutes late. I waited 25 minutes in the heat. It was actually hotter inside than outside. Why? Because the owner (who was there when I arrived, and left about 3:05) didn't turn on the air conditioner. Saving $ I guess, off the sweat of the customers and the operators. Sweating and faint, when I was finally seen, I asked my operator: "Don't you have air conditioning?" At which point she turned on the system (I guess it was safe since the boss-man had gone home.) It kicked in immediately and works just fine (Iif you turn it on!). If you like it hot (in summer) this is the place for you to go. Just be warmed. I mean, warned! read more

It was a good experience because I was able to work with a nice & caring hair stylist who knows exactly what she's doing when it comes to hair. I have always worked with Lida Z and I was fortunate enough to continue to work with her at DJ's Hair Design. Lida Z who worked at Hair International is now working at DJ's Hair Design. Lida is an awesome and very talented hair stylist; she knows exactly what her customers want and has great skills. She also has great hand movements when she's cutting hair, is very comfortable with her scissors, and can hold a great conversation when you talk to her!! When you tell Lida what you want, she knows exactly what to do, and she doesn't have to question it as long as you're precise and clear. I will now come to DJ's Hair Design because it is Lida's new home and I couldn't trust anyone else with my hair as I do with LIda. I trust Lida enough where I come to see her for all of my hair needs, whether it's for a hair cut, trim, or bang trim because I feel very comfortable with her. People getting textured bobs: I would not recommend this place because their traditional cutting style does not achieve the current textured bob look. Got a hair cut here about a month ago. The haircut turned out OK, but was not what I asked for. I had beautifully textured haircut from Bumble and Bumble in New York. When I went in, my hair was about two inches past my shoulders, apparently this is considered long hair and was $5 extra. Ok... I ask for a choppy, textured bob a few inches off my shoulders. I even explained to the hair stylist the technique that was used at Bumble and Bumble. The length comes out OK, but it is clear that they do not know how to achieve texturized style. The woman cut my bob so the bottom layer was shorter than the ones that proceeded, thus resulting in the feared "mushroom cut". Yup, a $60 mushroom cut. The value for shorter haired girls is also not good, considering anything past your shoulders is deemed long hair. I will definitely not be coming back here and warn other bob-seekers against this place. read more

You'd be best off cancelling your appointment on hot days unless this gets addressed. I started having her cut my hair a couple of years ago at Hair International at Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, after reading reviews of stylists on line, and have followed her move to DJ's. The first time I went to her, I brought in a few pictures of what I thought might look good and she riffed off of those to create something even better that fit me. I received tons of compliments by family, friends and colleagues after that initial cut, and continue to receive compliments from strangers (in fact just yesterday a school crossing guard complimented me!). Out of all the stylists I've been to my life, I've thought only Lida and one other stylist were able to cut my hair in an extremely flattering way. Also, I get a reaction to regular hair coloring products and so prefer to use henna I buy at whole foods. Lida is both willing to use henna when other stylists would not try it, and has experience using henna given it's used in Iran which is where she is from. It comes out a rich warm brown color. Not to mention Lida's super nice and accommodating, and fun to talk to if you feel like it, but also cool with me working during the cut if I need to. A note that Lida's new location is convenient in downtown Menlo park, but the storefront faces a parking lot (1155 chestnut st), so don't confuse it with some of the other salons there.
