I got Balayage hair color done from this salon and they did a tremendous job. Elena asked for my preference and explained the process really well. She was able to exactly replicate the look I wanted. I valued her recommendations as she is a well experienced professional. She did a great job. Her daughter Sahar assisted and made amazing curls (see my picture :)). She was extremely sweet and polite. It was delightful to see mother and daughter working together. They are fun. Although they more of look like sisters :). The salon is beautiful, clean and they had great equipments. The Christmas tree was a cherry on the top. The location is really prime as it's located in Palo Alto downtown next to the Apple Store. It's at 30 second walk from 2 parking lots. The garage has 3 hour free parking and the open parking is free for 2 hours (Mon - Friday) until 5 pm. I'm really torn about posting this review, because the daughter (Sahar) of the owner who destroyed my hair genuinely seemed like a very sweet and kind person. Despite how horrific my experience was I'm still going to give two stars just because Sahar seemed genuinely kind and it seems like most of the salons elderly regulars were happy while I was in the salon for this six hour ordeal. Nevertheless I'm posting this to warn others who might come here... I bought a Groupon for this salon after their yelp page seemed decent, and despite showing both the owner, and the hairstylist the exact color I wanted several times each, (i've been doing the same strawberry blonde since I was 12) I ended up with terrifying chunky stripes of green, orange, and black hair. When Sahar took me back from the wash I was so shocked that I began crying and shaking. (I'm A healthcare director and usually not easily shaken). It was so bad that I had to excuse myself to the bathroom to cry alone for a while and figure out what I was going to do. I'm very careful with my hair and have taken years to grow it out and now my entire head looks like a witch wig from a Halloween store. I very politely asked them if they could try to do anything at all to fix it and the owner immediately became very aggressive and got in my face, yelling at me about how it was my fault for not communicating properly. I very calmly and politely reminded the owner that I had shown her the picture several times over the course of the treatment and had been clear about the color I wanted. The owner continued to be very angry. I wanted to give her a chance to make things right and was very intimidated, so I let her add a few more foils to my hair to try to lighten some of the black streaks, despite knowing it would only damage my hair further. While adding the "fix ", the owner roughly yanked at my hair and aggressively slapped the foils against my face and eyes while working, ripping bits of my hair out and splattering dye and soaps on my clothes and skin. By the time she was done I was sad, frightened, shaking, and exhausted. It had been six hours. I did my best to be polite and thanked her for trying to fix the mistake, but admitted it was still a horrible outcome and that I was heartbroken. I told her I just wanted to leave but they wouldn't do let me go without me paying an additional $90 on top of my already paid Groupon. The owner was visibly upset when I didn't tip them on top of that. If Sahar had tried to fix my hair she might've been successful, but she is obviously terrified of her mother and shrank away the second the problem arose. While she has a lot to learn about how to color hair, Sahar really is a nice person who i'd say deserves a second chance, but steer clear of her mother/ the salon owner. She's scary as hell. It's going to take hundreds of dollars, damage, and lots of time to fix my hair now. I hate giving bad reviews to small businesses like this but I just hope anyone reading this I hope doesn't make the same mistake I did. What a nightmare. read more

I made an appointment for highlights based on the reviews from other customers and I am THRILLED with my results! I scheduled with Elena and color is her specialty. She was very honest about my my goal of platinum color. She explained that she would bring my hair to the all over blonde I wanted but that my natural shade would probably not achieve the results I wanted. I appreciated her honesty! My mom was a hair stylist my whole life, and she is very picky about who touches her hair. I remember the time she found this salon (totally reminds us of my moms old salon in San Carlos WAY back in the day), and how excited she was to find Elena! I had moved out of the North Bay, so I didn't start going here..... yet. After many failed attempts at finding a stylist over 10 years, (my hair is the worst! Super thin and a lot of it), I decided to drive an hour+ to see this "amazing Elena". And that's the end! I have no idea how long I've been going here, but I know I'll never stop (never move Elena!). I now live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and still go to Elena. Now onto her skills.... she is amazing at highlights. Her hair cuts are gorgeous. So good, I only have to go a couple times a year. The grow out looks so amazing. I love the no-brass blonde she gives me. Just bring her a pic of what you want! I've added a few examples of my hair. A few are definitely (6?) months old grow out. I always get stopped by people to know who does my hair! Especially this last time. Only thing I would say you should be warned about, is my girl is sassy. I love it personally, but I can see on yelp some people don't. She KNOWS what she's doing. I've had her tell me NO to things I wanted done, and I'm so glad she did. I want to start this review by saying although I was VERY disappointed in my service here, I DO NOT put the total blame on my nail technician. She was put in a difficult situation and I 100% blame management. I bought a Groupon for a shellac mani and regular media for this place months ago and decided to come here before my engagement shoot. I booked my session for 2 hours before my tanning appointment (because you're supposed to get your nails done before your tan) around 4pm. I booked about a week out. When I booked, they explained to me how the cancellation policy worked and if I were to cancel or reschedule 24 hours before my appt, I would lose my Groupon. I thought it was odd but whatever. I get it, it wastes their time. Then it gets ironic: 20 minutes before my appt at 4pm the day before my engagement shoot I get a call from the salon. My nail technician is going to be 30 minutes late and is there any way I could come in at 4:30 or reschedule instead? So, you guys can cancel/reschedule anytime but your patrons have to pay a price? No. I told her I can't simply because I have another appt at 6pm and I'm getting this done for my engagement photos tomorrow so I can't reschedule. She was very sweet and said she would figure something out. I show up promptly at 4pm, where I was asked to put my feet in warm water and wait. And wait. And wait. There were 2 nail technicians there. One was quickly working on one lady while the other, Vivian, was helping (what I assume was) a "regular" pick out colors for TWENTY MINUTES!!!! They knew I was in a rush and instead, they let me sit there, with my feet in warm water which quickly turned cold. This Vivian woman could have EASILY said to the regular, "Hi, go pick out your colors and holler if you need help. I need to start on this woman's pedicure since she's in a hurry." My service didn't actually begin until 4:30 (which I told them over the phone I couldn't do). I had to call the tanning salon and push back my appt. My nail technician never showed, so one of the other technicians had to stay late to do me. Annoyed with the fact that she had to stay late, she rushed the job and one of my nails actually got infected (see photo). To whoever is running this place: NEVER have I had a WORSE experience at a salon. You made me feel stressed, anxious, furious, and then BUTCHERED my fingers... and I had to pay for it!!!! I will never EVER be back. And I've already spoken with a few San Carlos residents who were looking for a nail salon about this incident. Horrible, horrible place. read more

Terrible experience. Got Groupon for keratin and a second Groupon for mani-pedi. When I made appointment I said that I was interested in getting a French manicure, with acrylic if possible and that I'd pay extra. Day of appointment, I got my keratin treatment. It was fine, the stylist was the owner's daughter and very kind. Yes, Maria cut herself and her heating unit fell off the wall. Yes, she also disparaged "lazy young people" which isn't ideal but I didn't care about any of that. What I cared about was that for my nails, I tried to tell Michelle the nail tech, that I wanted French tip manicure, she looked at my nails and said they weren't long enough, to which I replied that I'd be happy with acrylic or gel builder or something and that I'd pay extra. well I guess there was a miscommunication because I ended up with bright pink uneven, and damaged mani-pedi. Michelle did an awful job, and did so much damage to my nails and cuticles. Plus, I got charged $15 extra for the supposed gel, but it wasn't shiny and it came right off at the next salon I went to. They believe I was lied to. That it wasn't an actual gel and that I was manipulated. It looked so bad I wanted to cry. I tried to point out the spots that looked bad while there, but the whole paint job looked bad. Not only was that not what I wanted, it was done poorly and hurt. I could understand not being able to do my nails French manicure style. I could understand most things, but I all I got from this nail salon was bloody and damaged cuticles, and the feeling of hurt. She cut into my toes to try and get them to look nice but she failed. The next place I went to RoseHip Salon, worked overtime and did an amazing job fixing my nails. It's hard enough to tell a salon that you don't like the job they did, and I definitely would've been able to say something if Michelle was new at her job but she had been doing this for 20 years.. how can someone do it so terribly for so long? Plus I felt bad for using a Groupon, and the owner, Maria was aggressive. Even as I left, she noticed my hair color, which I do myself, asked me who did it and said it looked awful. I know it needed work, which I can do myself, and if she had been kinder about it, I would have likely given her my business. But she kept staring at me and told me how awful and splotchy it looked. She kept belittling me for it. In the future, if she has just said, "hey I'm not sure you noticed but it looks like your hair coloring was done unevenly, If you wanted it fixed, we can do that here." I would have totally been cool with that kind of up-sell. But how much she insulted me, and even after I acknowledged it and said I planned to fix it soon myself, she continued to be-little and insult me.. why would I want to give you my business?plus her quoted price was incredibly high. Bottom line, don't get your nails done here with Michelle, not sure about the other women. Go to RoseHip Salon. I'm worried about infection at this point. also If you don't want to be belittled; or subjected to aggressive opinions, or want to support someone like that, go elsewhere. I hate hate hate giving bad reviews but I feel very hurt and cheated. read more

Got a haircut here a 2 years ago because it was local and convenient. I didn't like my haircut and didn't think my haircut listened to my request well. 2/5 stars I haven't gone back since. I walk by often and see the women who work there chain smoking in front of the store. Gross and tacky. Rude to nearby businesses, unsafe for the pediatric dentist office couple doors down and unsafe for customers being exposed to cigarette smoke. -1 star read more

Pro Tip: If you buy their 3 gel manicure deal on groupon make sure that you use all three by the day that the Groupon expires, this is not blatantly stated on their Groupon post and led to some issues. Manicurist was nice and she did a good job, at least I thought.... I got my nails done Thursday and Sunday morning I already had one of my nails chipping from the tip! By Tuesday (today) another one already chipped. I've been getting gel manicures for years and NEVER had this issue if anything as they grow out I've had them peel from the base. Very disappointed especially since I haven't even been doing a lot of dishes or anything. That's why I'm leaving 2 stars. Poor execution. read more

I received a Groupon for a spa mani/pedi for my birthday and decided to finally take advantage of it. The salon is quaint, clean and divided into two sides. One side is for hair and the other for nails. It's light and airy and the staff were warm and welcoming. Michelle was my nail technician and was very personable and friendly. She did a fantastic job on my nails and the Pedicure scrub was delightful. I was under the weather so this is exactly what I needed.
