This is so much flippen fun! I am sold, I want my own snowmobile now. But if you can't afford your own snowmobile, the insurance, the maintenance, the trailer, etc. this is the best way to go. DJ's staff is very friendly. I like that they give you the how-to and rules straight up, no scary tactics, just the facts. Their trails are well groomed and very well labeled. They even post photo ops! There is no possible way you'll get lost, unless you go off trail and head into the back country on your own. There's even a map right between your legs, attached to the snowmobile. There are 3 different self-guided options: 1.5, 2 and 3 hours. Each with different destinations. I did the 2 hour ride up to Lookout Mountain, with time enough to get to Vista Point and Upper Vista Trail. I even had enough time to play around in all the fresh powder on Smokey Bear Flats. It started to snow toward the end of our 2 hour ride, but I was still having a fantastic time. I highly recommend riding single. There is nothing more disappointing than having no control and missing out on all the fun! It was definitely worth $120. If I remember correctly, with the insurance, the total came out to $132. They are also very punctual, so make sure to arrive early. I showed up at 12:30 pm. My reservation time was 1:00. I was on my snowmobile and ready to ride out at 1:01. The speed limit is 20 mph. It was really difficult to stay at that speed. They state GPS is mounted on the snowmobiles and they can monitor speed, location, etc. I have no idea if it's a little white lie, or they actually do have it installed, but I wasn't about to have my fun taken away from me for going too fast. read more

Our family of five had a blast on our 1.5hr guided tour. Cody, our tour guide was awesome. We hit all the trails then he took us through some fresh powder for a while. The fresh powder was our favorite part. The trails have beautiful scenery and are awesome as well. We just liked carving the powder better. We rented a 2 seater, 1 seater and the sleigh. They ended up putting my wife and I both on two seaters with the sleigh attached to one. We stated the tour with our 7 year old behind me and our 5 and 11yr old in the sleigh. After about 30 minutes or so the two in the sleigh said it was really ruff and hard on their bottoms. We ended the ride with all three kids on the back of the three bikes. Cody was kind enough to take one his bike since they were only two seaters. In the end we all had a blast and we will be back next year to do it again. just returned from a 5 day trip to Mammoth and enjoyed an incredible experience with every event from skiing, dining, shopping and dog sledding. The only negative experience was with DJ's Snowmobile Adventures. Here is my story. I had reservations for 4 riders (2 doubles) for a Thursday am ride which included a lunch and guided tour. This is a premium package. I was required to leave a deposit by leaving my AMEX credit card number at the time of the reservation which was made many weeks in advance. No problem so far.......On Wednesday night I called to see if I could move the reservation to Saturday. No, it is filled up.....no problem I said....see you in the am......Thursday am at 7am one of our party has a personal problem with attending the ride so I call at 8am to see if the reservation can be moved to Friday instead.......reservation agent says no problem, but cant do a lunch ride........fantastic I say, everything has worked out even though we had to juggle our schedules..........so I thought.................... I get a call back an hour later saying that because I had no-showed last year they were cancelling my reservation! What are you talking about???!!!!! I say ....and not so kindly I might add.......well you have been trying to cancel this reservation for 2 days the agent responds...to which I say........I am not cancelling, I changed it because according to you, I had an option to move it to another date. In addition, I said, I didnt no show last year, my bookeeper took my reservation in my place which was approved by the company after I notified them in advance........incredibly frustrating!!!!!@!$!%%&#&** Something very strange with the communciation and customer service. They had my credit card, they could have simply charged my card as is thier policy if I had no-showed........but to cancel a reservation because they got their panties in a wad is simply ignorant and lacks comprehension of good business practices. Well since then, I asked around town to the locals about this company regarding their reputation and found no positive responses. Good marketing does not overcome bad customer service...the locals know this......The hotel where I stayed will not refer them business. When the concierge of a major hotel chain will not refer hotel guests to a business.......let the buyer beware........... My recommendation is don't book with this company. There are better options. Went up to mammoth for nye like we always do and wanted to try something new. My husband and I rented a double snowmobile for 2 hrs and had a wonderful time. However, make sure you use the restroom before going there because the single porta potty on site was absolutely disgusting and topped off... Use your imagination. I had to hold off going to the bathroom for the two hours we were out there. Other than that I would definitely recommend DJ's to people wanting to see some beautiful scenery! read more

We have snowmobiled with DJ's for years and every year it is a BLAST! Have done the self guided marked trail but love to go out with a guide so we can go further, safer and not get lost. We have gone out 3 times this year and each time was a little different and FUN!! The most fun is to each drive your own but if you do double up make sure the person on the back is dressed really warm and has some pocket heaters because it is cold back there. ok, so i went snowmobiling for the first time this year and i had such a blast! after a long holiday weekend snowboarding at mammoth mountain, we had heard thru another group of friends that they had reservations to go snowmobiling at mammoth. i was soooo hyped about it and wanted to try it as well. so i called mammoth mountain and of course..being that it was a holiday weekend, they were all booked! but a friend of mine recommended DJ's, which is cheaper and just off hwy 395. you can't miss the place, its literally right OFF of hwy 395. theres a small trailer parked alongside the wide open flat area with a huge banner. for a double rider, it was $80 and $65 for single rider. it seems a bit intimidating at first but it's like riding a motorcycle or a jetski (sorry if you havent tried neither one!). they provide you with a map of the trail so that you know where to go if you decide that you want to ride the scenic trails. the trail is fairly long and there are areas which you can stop to take photos. when we went, the trails were completely empty so we didnt have to worry about traffic =) but the view is totally breathtaking! you have to try this at least once in your lifetime. the entire trail took about an hour for us which was perfect. remember to always bring your cell phone JUST IN CASE something happens to you while youre on the trail. the staff there were extremely nice and helpful. just be careful and watch the speed limit, you'll have a great time! btw, i think this place is either closing down or up for sale =( hopefully they'll still be around after this season. read more

What an amazing experience!! Booking online was simple. We rented two doubles. We have a 8 and 10 year old. Was debating a guided tour and we went for the 1.5 Self-guided tour. I was wondering how not having a guide would be. Everything was clearly marked and we had no issues with navigation at all. We had some time left and we went into the open space and did some exploring which only added to the fun. The kids had a blast and so did we!!! The staff was amazing and friendly. We have been clients of DJ's for over 5 years. We take annual trip to Mammoth and its a must adventure. This year we booked 4 snowmobiles for the whole family. Less than half way thru, one of the skies broke down, then 5 minutes later the tour guides snowmobile broke down. we waited 45 minutes for them to get us replacement units and once we got it, they ended the tour 10 minutes after. They promised they will discount us for missing out the adventure. Now they dont even want to honor a 50% discount for only riding 50% of the promised ride. I would never come back again. read more

Had a great time snowmobiling at Mammoth! We decided to try something new every year, so this year was snowmobiling. Mammoth has two places for snowmobiling, and DJ's is much cheaper than the one by main lodge. You just have to drive back out to the HWY, about 10 minutes from Canyon Lodge. Fortunately, there was enough snow this year, and they had just opened a few days before we arrived. We did get lost, but they came to find us and helped us back to the correct trail. Supposedly, all the snowmobiles had GPS devices which is a good thing because we could have kept on going in the wrong direction. They have a 20 mph limit which is pretty fast for a snowmobile, and we rarely ever went over that limit. If I were to make a suggestion, the trail signs could be much bigger. We rented 4 snowmobiles, 3 singles and 1 double for 1 1/2 hour self-guided tour. Even though you may not realize it, you do end up inhaling exhaust fumes from the snowmobiles if you are behind them. We were heading toward some vista point which required traveling up a road. This fume stayed with us all night long, but then we were fine the next day. All in all, it was a great experience which I would recommend to anyone. So next time if you're in the Mammoth area, check out DJ's Snowmobiles. read more

Writing this review for people who are deciding to getting the sleigh. Came here with my husband and two kids, age 8 and 6. We got the sleigh for the kids because I wasn't sure if my six year old would be able to hold on in the back seat. Sleigh just seemed safer. So 10 minutes I into the tour, kids were signaling me to stop. They were getting nauseous from the constant exhaust smell inside such a small enclosed space. Add that to all the bumps and they wanted the ride to end. After persuading them to continue, by midway point myy youngest just couldn't anymore. So I had her ride upfront with my husband and I sat in the sleigh with my 8 year old. Omg, worst idea ever! It was like putting your face to the exhaust the entire time. Fumes were just so strong. And the bumps made my insides hurt. I ended up hitting my head sso much that my neck hurt. And I'm only 5'1". I was so happy when the tour ended. My advice is Do NOT get the sleigh. Just get two a snowmobiles andd have the kids sit behind you. Absolutely no sleigh! Otherwise, my six year old had a blast sitting behind my husband. She had no problem holding onto the handles. Views were gorgeous. Guide was friendly. Wish I would've known about the experience in the sleigh beforehand. I would've definitely gotten two snowmobiles instead. read more

My family and I called wanting to book a tour and forgot that they usually close on Wednesdays. I believe it was the owner I spoke with and he said that he'd open up and allow us to hit the snow park. We had already been snowmobiling at another place and after reading the reviews that once you go to DJ's you will not go to another place. Well the reviews were right! While we just had an hour to ride the snow park, we will be back for sure to book the tours which I hear are AWESOME! The place is right at the BIG DJ's sign off the 395 easy enough to find. The check in was a breeze and the sleds are easy enough to ride. The snow park is enormous and so much fun so if you have the time book with DJs you will not be disappointed!!! NOTE: I originally wrote a negative review but deleted it after owners took action. This is an updated review. Please note that my family and I did not get a chance to go on the snowmobile tour. I'm sure we would've been much happier with the company if we did. They seem good from the reviews, but I just had a series of bad experiences, which hopefully won't happen again. I originally booked a 2-hour tour for 5 single riders. I paid in full (as required for booking) 2 months in advance for Dec. 24. The night before, the owner calls and tells me they have to cancel. One snowmobile caught on fire, and another crashed into a tree. I asked if just 3 of us could ride since it sounded like 2 snowmobiles were down but the rest were fine. Well, she calls back and tells me no, they can't do the tour (not sure exactly why) and complains that they bought the company this past summer and the equipment isn't as good as they expected. I was bummed because my whole family was looking forward to it, but stuff happens. She tells me I'll receive a full refund. Well 8 days later, no refund. So I reply to the email they sent me with my order confirmation. The email didn't look official, just like a personal account, so I tried looking for an actual email address on their website and there wasn't one (after my suggestion, they said they put one up now). I then proceed to call the next day, but get a voicemail saying they're closed due to illness. I leave a voicemail. I call back 4 more times over the next 4 days, all going to voicemail saying they're closed but will be open on the weekend. Then Sunday (today) at 12:50 p.m., I call and voicemail says they'll be open Sunday at 9 a.m. (obviously they're not). Well at this point I'm upset and worried something's wrong with their company. (In the back of my mind, I actually worried that they were just taking my money and it was all a scam. Payment all upfront, cancelling the trip, no refund, and then not answering my email or calls ... ) So I go online and write two bad reviews. They finally call me like a half hour later. The guy sounds angry on the phone because I left the negative reviews. He's been through a lot and it's just him and his wife, and I wouldn't understand (I run a small family business too, I get it.) We go back and forth. He says he though he sent me a refund but I guess he didn't. And then in the middle of our conversation the call just ends. I'm not sure if he hung up on me or if the call was lost. But I never heard from him again, so I assumed he hung up on me (my apologies if I'm wrong, but usually you try calling back if you lose connection). I then get my refund confirmation from PayPal, and I take down my bad reviews. So that's resolved. I send an email with my suggestions on how they can improve. They email back and they give me attitude. Even called something in my review a "flat out lie" when it really wasn't. I know they're still angry at me probably. We go back and forth on the emails, and they even say "May I suggest contacting Mammoth Mountain for all your future snowmobiling needs," basically saying they don't want me to come back as a customer. Thanks? I was expecting something more along the lines of, please come back, we'll give you a discount on your next trip if you book with us. Sorry for everything we've done. SUMMARY: They cancelled the trip on me. They didn't refund me (they said it was just "delayed" but I suspect they just forgot because it's been 2 weeks already). They were very difficult to reach (but bad reviews work well!). They gave me attitude and excuses that didn't make sense when they finally called me back. But you know what? I don't see them as bad people or a bad company. They're just maybe very emotionally invested in their company (hence the attitude) and they lead very busy lives. I truly want their business to succeed, and I'm sure they do very well with the actual snowmobile trips. I just hope they treat future customers better than they treated me. And don't forget to refund your customers! I'm sure after me, they won't forget. read more

They will never answer the phone or return your calls but you have to pay upfront online reservation. Mammoth has been having crazy weather so I began calling the day before our reservation to see if they would be open since we were the first reservation of the day at 9:30. The voicemail says to follow them on Facebook to know whether they will be open. I was concerned because from looking at their FB page they don't post until 10-10:30 which doesn't help those of us with early reservations. I started calling at 7am all the way up to 9:07am....it was Saturday and voicemail still said it was Friday and they were closed for weather. Nothing on FB. We were trying to get there in very dangerous conditions ...wind was so bad we were in complete whiteout at times. All we needed to know was whether they were going to be open and they didn't post until 10:23am that they were open. Today is Monday and their FB page still references Saturday......horribly run business! I have two disappointed 17 year olds and lost $380 to the most unprofessional company I have ever done business with. I asked for a refund which I had to do on FB which I was told no. Running a business on FB is rinky dink!!!!!! read more

Well, this trip totally back fired on us!! I must say, this was one of the WORST experiences I've ever had on a vacation (EVER). To start it off, the office cashier was uninformative and disinterested in customers. No big deal right? Well that was just the start. When we go outside the office to be oriented to the snowmobiles, our guide is texting on his cell phone while giving instructions. He failed to mention several key features of how to operate the snowmobiles, such as if there was a reverse on the machines (long story short - It was bad!). He did not properly inspect the machines for gas and did not run through any sort of safety checklist. He even told us we would crash the snowmobiles...guaranteed. I wish I was lying, but I'm not! As far as the tour goes, we had THE WORST experience of our lives! we did this because my wife had never snowmobiled before and was a bit nervous... and my son, who is mildly autistic, would be riding on the back of my snowmobile. The road conditions in the area were pretty bad that day, and this guy was either hopped up on coffee or just a completely manic (most likely both)!!!!! He insisted we drive 45 mph even though the flat area had some super heavy snow - As crazy as that sounds! On the trail, my son had a mitten fly off while we were going 45 mph-- and the guide just kept right on going... not ever even stopping to help us get his mitten . I continually asked this guide to slow it down about 10 mph. He would not!!... and eventually my son and I wiped out with me twisting my ankle and hip... and my son injuring his knee - lucky for us there was no damage to the machine. We booked a tour with this company for a nice, long snowmobile tour through the lovely forest of Mammoth Lakes. We didn't want to be in a group, as we might have held some folks up-- and we didn't want to ruin anyone else's time by only driving at a pace of about 30-35 miles and hour, as some folks often like to drive around 40 to 45. That being said, we booked a private tour (paid way too much by the way for just 3 people and only 2 snowmobiles). We tried to keep up with this lunatic guide as best we could--and tried to stay at 45 mph, but it became nearly impossible to do! It was absolutely exhausting, as my son was crying while riding on the back with me while we had many, many near accidents. I actually explained all of this prior to the booking agent too and specifically asked for a kind guide that would be patient and not in any real hurry. The lady that booked the trip was awful. She seemed robotic with her responses, and assured me that we would get what we asked for! Well we didn't!!! I asked the guide numerous times if we could simply just slow it down a bit. Maybe go at a more leisurely pace so we could actually enjoy the trip-- look around a bit-- and not have to be so hyper-focused in order not to not crash and burn. We wanted to maybe stop and take a few photos along the way (like I had on a snowmobile trip once through Yellowstone). He was VERY rude -- insisting we had to go 45 MPH to be finished by 3:00. Thanks, but not thanks!! To top it off, near the end of our tour, my snowmobile stalled and failed to start up. We were stranded out in the forest for nearly 20 minutes until we finally manage to get my faulty machines running and head back, we see that the guides had been sitting at their warm office waiting for us to return. Thanks a lot for the help! Stay away from this company. There's another Snowmobile Tour Company at Mammoth. Almost everyone in Mammoth is very happy and friendly. I don't know where they found this guy. What a nightmare!!!! read more

There are so many variables that can make or break an experience like a snowmobile trek, especially if you're new to the experience. Some will be nature-dependent--weather, snowpack depth and such. Other factors like the equipment and your guide also play a big role. But clearly and most obviously the biggest consideration is thumb strength. Um, let's come back to that. The check in process was easy and speedy. Multiple signs inside and out show you your potential liability if you crash a snowmobile into a tree (Hint: it's a lot.) The cost of insurance was low ($15 or so) and we all got it. Note that even with insurance you're liable for the $600 deductible so it's still not a good idea to start doing flips. Our guide (forgot his name) was knowledgeable and friendly and took us out after a quick safety brief and orientation. He kept a close eye on the group throughout the tour to make sure everyone was safe and accounted for. There's an option for a self-guided tour as well if you're the type that doesn't like to be told what to do. Bring your own gloves if you can, although you can purchase them if necessary. Helmets are provided, and if you can get a cheap headsock (not included) you'll erect one more level of hygiene buffer between you and the last jerk. So what did we not like? The biggest complaint from the group was the thumb throttle which seems to use a spring with the highest tension strength known to Western science. After 10 or 15 mins of riding, everyone was trying to shake the pain out of their hands every time we stopped. This isn't a minor complaint either. It affected our ability to smoothly manipulate the throttle, especially in places where we needed to both turn and move slowly to avoid plummeting off a small death cliff. Each person also complained that there seemed to be an exhaust pipe perpetually pointed at your head as the fumes were intoxicatingly strong. We all had a good time and got some great photos out of the trip with no regrets. Also, none of us will be doing it again. read more

When we called to make a reservation we were told that it was a 20mph speed limit on the trails, and a few snowplay areas where you could do what you like. Then when we arrive, we are told it is a strict 20 mph speed limit everywhere. Ultimately, I signed up to drive a snowmobile. Not take a tour at 20 mph. I can ride my bike that fast. I have to be fair, I am really just dissapointed in the 20mph speed limit. Other then that the business was fine. But I have rented snow machines at other resorts and had a much better time. read more

The staff was friendly and helpful, and they didn't come with the "know it all" or "sick of this job" attitude. We did the 1.5 hour self guided vista trail ride and it was beautiful. I gave it 3 stars for the for the 20 MPH speed limit and the price ($125 for a single rider including insurance/taxes). I felt like I had a really powerful machine, but I could have gone that fast down the highway on my bike... The location is great. Open meadows, vistas, and groomed trails. The staff attempted to be helpful but make sure to show up at least 45 minutes early because a line forms easily. Unfortunately my snowmobile was not acting normal. It had about 50% less power than it should have had. After getting yelled at by a guide for mistakenly being outside the boundaries, I went back to the office. Turns out my sled still had a tool stuck inside the belt drive. Things were fine after that except for getting grief from the same guide who thought I was speeding (even though I was doing the 20 mph limit). I would rather purchase a snowmobile before coming back. Great for people who have never been snowmobiling or who like getting subpar service. read more

We took a 1 1/2 hour guided tour with a group of 6 yesterday & had a blast! None of us had ever ridden a snowmobile so this was quite a memorable experience for all of us!! Brenton was our guide and he did a great job of taking us on an awesome trail & look out point and even taking an amazing panoramic group pic of us. Even when I had a minor accident on my snowmobile due to ice on the trail, they were so helpful and concerned for my safety. They promptly brought out another snowmobile so I could continue on the ride. My advice: get the insurance! Why wouldn't you? Its only $12 and completely worth it. Did the 1.5 hour self guided tour on Jan 1st. Rented 3 skis and had my 8 year old daughter on the back of mine. Had the BEST time. My daughter is usually a bit of a wimp, but even she loved it! We booked two dual snowmobiles for 2 hours and paid online. The day before we were to go snowmobile, we heard from the locals that due to the lack of snow, DJs was closed. We called that same day and their closure was confirmed by the lady that answered the phone. She was courteous and explained that due to the lack of snow, they were closed for the season. She confirm a refund would be processed in 3 days. We waited 5 days before I started calling about the refund. It never came through and every time I call, all I get is their voicemail. I have left more than 30 messages and multiple emails. Our booking was for February 21st and it is now May. We have not received a refund or call back. It is so disappointing because I had hoped to use them next year. Now, I find myself writing reviews so that this doesn't happen to anyone. I was a little skeptical at first because of the average rating... However, my wife and I decided to avoid the crowd from Mammoth and come to this place. It was definately the right choice. We decided to be adventurous and picked the self-guided tour. My wife and 2 small children, ages 5 and 6, rented 2 snowmobiles. We were able to see the whole trail at our pace and took plenty of incredible pictures. The kids loved it because they were able to play with fresh snow and made plenty of snow angels. The trail was beautiful and it takes you to the top of the hill which provides breath taking scenery. The guys here were professional, friendly, and extremely helpful. I definately will come back here again!!! read more
