I was about to make my first online firearm purchase and was looking for a local FFL that could facilitate the transfer and help me navigate the unfamiliar process. My CCW instructor recommended I look into DMZ and I reached out to Nelson Ruiz via email and he promptly responded with an explanation of the steps we would need to take and what information was needed to proceed. I felt comfortable with how he presented the information and was immediately at ease with moving forward with my online purchase. Once the firearm was received by Nelson, he let me know that he would be processing the receipt of the firearm and would contact me as soon as my background check cleared. A few days later, he informed me that the background check cleared and my firearm was ready for me to pickup at my convenience. He has a good system down and is excellent about getting in touch with sellers and moving communications along quickly. 1st time FFL transfer went great, came in and out fast. 2nd FFL transfer however, no clear communication, firearm received on Monday morning, did not get the ready mail until Wednesday 4pm, and of course, they are closed on only Wednesdays!. So I will picking it up tomorrow on Thursday. Expected same turn around time as my first transfer, mistake. Owner works out of his house. Excellent CCW class. Cheapest price around yet the quality and instruction was first rate. Nelson's experience and extensive knowledge of practically any firearm ever made is evident in this well planned and well executed class. The CCW class requires learning a lot of laws and instruction in carrying a firearm in Illinois. This means a lot of reading/class time. But Nelson's affable nature and unparalleled knowledge in all things firearms, allows the class to flow at a nice pace. Fingerprinting is also included in the class. Nelson is also readily available for any questions after taking the class. I took the class 7 months ago. I've texted or emailed him questions regarding firearms, home security, carrying laws, etc. He answered all my questions fast and thorough. The location of the class is perfect. Right off the highway and you're there in a couple of minutes. There plenty places to lunch in the area, but that's irrelevant because he caters lunch!!! What was also important to me is that Nelson is a former Marine who brings, as you'd expect, all the knowledge, professionalism, insight and integrity to the program of a person with his experience. Nelson is also NRA certified so he gives you the opportunity (for NRA's fee) to get the Basic Pistol Course certificate, which I did. I plan on taking private pistol instruction from and will take the NRA Basic rifle class with him and bring my two kids along. (Rifle is actually his specialty.) CCW class was taught in a profesional manor. Nelson provided his knowledge to throughly explain the material needed while giving examples of situations to help students digest the material. A very smooth firearm purchasing experience, in Cook County no less! Found Nelson while researching purchasing a firearm and contacted him regarding doing an FFL transfer (for which he has the best prices). He was very helpful and willing to review the process with me over the phone and provide recommendations on websites (unlike the cold, dismissive vibe I got from others). But I actually ended up ordering the firearm directly through him and picking it up later that week, no problem at all. He was able to locate the pistol I wanted that everyone else in the area seemed to be out of stock in, and provided a very fair price that beat all the other shops in the area.
