I spun a rod in my 70' Oldsmobile 442 high performance 455 cid engine. It needed to be completely rebuilt. This is a show quality car and engine. I was referred to Alex at D&A and was a bit apprehensive as it is a small shop. I was assured by Alex that the car would be well cared for. I was impressed with the way he pre ordered parts and staged cars for the major repairs, thus avoiding excessive down time for the vehicle. He put the car on a lift and covered it while the engine work was done. I can tell you that engine was beautiful before and even more so after the rebuild. And as for performance, well after some trial and error with carburetor and distributor tuning, the results were simply amazing. Wow. Álex was not satisfied until it ran up to expectations. And my expectations were high. Price was fair. I'm convinced he and his guys can handle any auto repair. read more

Alex was SO helpful when ALL of our cars needed service within 3 weeks of each other. We knew we were putting off service on 2 of our cars, so when we mentioned we had 2 other cars coming in AFTER our 1st car, Alex was more than helpful in putting together a deal for us to alleviate some of the cost. We had a quick turnaround on when each car was finished, which was amazing and we even had my Mom take her car there as well. In fact, she had another issue that didn't need to be fixed immediately, yet Alex informed us how many miles/months we had until we would need to address that issue, so that we could plan accordingly with regards to cost. Be aware, in my opinion these guys are not honest and the coupon ads always different than the real price. If you decide to have work done at least get a quote for the real price on all the mark up and then assume higher for the surprises. STAY CLEAR !!!! They advertise a 29.95 4 Wheel Alignment made 2 attempts to get it done. Drove from San Clemente the first time after calling them and they told me to come. When I get there 15 min. later they had a car on the machine and that it could not be moved till the next day and to come back. So the 2nd time I call and go there they told me that it would be 89.00 because of my car.If they would have just told me that the first time I was there and they wasted my time I would have not gone back!!!!! Avoid this shop! They will damage your car! Poor customer service. I found D & A when my wife and I first moved to Dana Point about six years ago. We get our major work done at the dealership, but I wanted to find a place closer to home for oil changes, service, tires, and small repairs because our apartment complex doesn't allow me to do any work on our cars myself. I didn't notice any problems with D & A for the first few oil changes, but then the problems began. About a year after we started going there, they told me that the cap where you put the oil in is broken. I had them replace it, thinking it was no big deal. Only about $25. Then a few months later, they told me that the oil cap on my wife's car was broken. Since her car was less than two years old, I asked how it had been broken. They said that it must have been twisted on crooked. "Then you must have broken it, since nobody else has touched it." was my response. They denied breaking it, and I went ahead and had them replace it. Then, a few months later, they told me that my radiator cap was broken. "Then you must have broken it since nobody else has touched it," I said. They denied breaking it, and I had it replaced. Then, a couple of oil changes later, the oil cap mysteriously became broken again...another $25! Then, when I was washing my car, I noticed that the caps on my tires had been replaced. I had caps on them that tell you the tire pressure, and now, mysteriously, they had the simple black plastic caps on them. I was growing weary of these small problems, but I had to get tires. D & A sells tires, so I asked them to sell me some. They couldn't do it right away, so they told me that they would price some tires and then give me a call. They never called. Then I noticed a big plastic piece was dangling under my car, so I took it to the dealership. They told me that the piece was meant to cover the bottom of the engine, and it was missing the clips that hold it on. "How could those clips fall off?" I asked. "They wouldn't fall off, but they have to be taken off to get to the oil filter." Obviously D & A had failed to put them back on! So then I took my wife's car to the dealer for an oil change, and what do you know? They told us that the oil cap was broken! Effen D & A! They broke the car every time they touched it! I will never take anything to them again. It is difficult to find a good mechanic. One of the reasons that it is so difficult is that it might take you a couple of years before you figure out just how bad a mechanic really is. Please hear my warning! Do not take your car to D & A. They seem like nice people, but they will break your car and make you pay to fix it. read more

Finding a good mechanic is not easy. I found D&A by chance as the alternator on my car went out. As it is a high mileage vehicle (180K miles) we discussed whether to repair or just get a new car. Alex, the owner, spent a great deal of time with me discussing the repair, any alternatives, and his thoughts on what to do. His labor rates are very fair and when I called him the next day to ask about the price of some parts, he was very patient in explaining what he put on the car and why. At the end of everything, you have to do business with people you trust. D&A automotive seems like a very trustworthy establishment. They give a 1 year warranty on all parts and labor so are standing behind my new alternator with not only their reputation, but also their money. I would rate this Business with a no star if I could because I was trying to save a few bucks when I went to D&A auto for my tires..which was a very bad decision. D&A auto treated me horrible placed substandard tires on my car This place takes advantage of females! I had all four tires replaced two years a go. I've had rotator cuff surgery so the only driving I've done is to the market and Doctors appointments. I returned to D&A to have my tires rotated they striped one of my lug nuts and the tried to tell me they didn't do it.. wanted me to pay75$ plus tax a little over 80$ to have it repaired..however no one else had touch my car but them!! Now two years later.. both front tires are out of round witch means the rubber is separating from the steal belt..and it feel like my wheels are shaped like American football.. Hollys tires told me not to drive because it's dangerous.. went back to D&A again I was treated as if I damaged the tires is stead of just replacing the defective tires. I will also be reporting them to the better Business Bureau.. Go to Hollys in San Clemente Sergio and Greg are honest and have integrity... read more

I went into DNA with DNA's Pennysaver ad for a oil change. I have 3 cars I wanted to have serviced and inspected over the next few days. They would not honor the ad price on any of my vehicles service needs and instead quoted nearly 3 times the ad price for an oil change. I left with out having any service performed. I felt the old bait and switch in play. Alex told me my vehicle would require 7 - 8 quarts of oil thus the extra fee. However, I know from working on my vehicle for 5 years it only takes 5 quarts as does most standard V8 engines. He would not honor any of his ad prices. Be certain you know what you are paying before having him do any work. read more

I am always hesitant about bringing my cars to mechanics because of previous experience. However, Alex Avila, the owner I spoke to, was courteous and honest about the issues with my 95 Honda Passport. He lifted the car and immediately spotted the problem, and was straightforward about the costs associated with fixing. I took my 2012 Toyota Tacoma to DNA for a brake job on the front brakes. Prior to taking it to DNA I had taken it to Capistrano Toyota where I purchased the truck, Capistrano Toyota gives free oil changes and and tire rotation for the life of the vehicle if you buy it there. They informed me I needed brakes on the front and also recommended I get a 30K tune up because I had 29K miles on the truck. I regularly receive coupons for brake jobs in the mail and publications like the Pennysaver where I found a coupon for 59.95 brake service from DNA. The 59.99 brake service turned into 199.00 they also informed me the spark plugs were bad and that whoever worked on the car prior had installed two different types of spark plugs. The spark plugs had never been changed they were the original spark plugs from the manufacturer Toyota where I bought the truck new. Anyone who knows Toyota products knows they have a higher quality rating than most manufacturers. In the end it cost me 332.00, If I knew then what I know now I would have never taken my vehicle to DNA. It appears to me DNA is one of those untrustworthy mechanics you hear horror stories about and see on TV. I'm just glad I figured it out early before they could do too much damage like they did to the guy with oil cap problems. There are plenty of good honest mechanics but DNA is NOT one of them. Buyer beware DNA is only looking to create an income flow rather than fix your car/truck, avoid this place like the plague!! read more

Really a bummer to have to write this review. We have had work done at this shop for years...have spent over 6k here...but what happened today is inexcusable and I would want yelpers to give us a heads up so here goes. We brought in our 2004 tundra as the check engine light was on. We were given a call back and talked to the folks there, they told us we needed two O2 sensors at $319 each...I have had this issue before and thought the price was too high, we then asked if this was the price installed and he told us it would be $850 to do both sensors with labor...really? My husband and I called two dealerships and two other shops and the dealer quoted us less than $200 per sensor and then one shop said, "Did they give you the code?" No all four places we called said they would replace two sensors for under $450.00 total....we drove to pick up our truck. They re-did our estimate and none of them wanted to address the $850 that was our phone estimate and both my husband and I were on the phone and heard it. They then said only one o2 sensor was bad but they usually replace both of them....we later found out there is four 02 sensors!!! The written estimate they gave us was for 319 total parts and labor for one sensor. Still way above any other shop but much lower than he had quoted us. We took our truck to another company and he said usually you only replace the parts the system says are bad which was one o2 sensor. Really disappointing...please be weary here. read more
