We lived in Mission Viejo for many years and could never find a respectable mechanic. When we moved to San Clemente, a little bit of research and word of mouth led us to Shadetree Automotive. We have lived in SC going on 10 years and all 4 are cars are serviced by Shadetree. There has been be been an issue with service or pricing, including last week when my daughter's car needed brakes. I knew it was coming up as the vehicle had 67k miles and we bought it with 36k. The rotors grinding scared her, but [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called Dan at Shadetree and noon in which he told me to drop off the vehicle.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The vehicle needed rotors and brakes on the front and back, the batttery was just about dead, but lastly he recommmneded the brake fluid exchange. I was hesitant but seeing we sold one of the other cars the weeek before, we needed to ensure this car last a long time as well. I've been taking my Honda Element to Shadetree for years (it's a 2005), and hope I never have to take it anywhere else. The car is always repaired correctly and as promptly as is possible (sometimes we have to wait for parts to arrive etc.), and at a fair price. These guys are honest and do great work! I won't take my "family fleet" of cars anywhere else! Can't tell you how many times I have learned that lesson!!Currently I have a service contract on a new car with the dealer and have had a few oil changes there. I just caught the dealer recommending unnecessary repairs, even went as far as to have Shadetree thoroughly check out the dealer's recommendations and brought the dealer's notes to Shadetree. Can't say enough about this place. I am a retired/widow living ion a teacher's pension. This shop was recommended to me by another great place Holly's tires right down the street. Dan was very helpful in explaining to me just what was wrong with my car. It's a 2008 Chrysler Town&Country Van that needs to our live me My request was to fix what would get me back up and running. Recommendations they make are items needed I did not notice but they needed changing or service. A pre inspection for a sale turned BAD. Brought my very nice car in for a pre sale inspection. Even they said the car was nice--had no issues. I have been around the block and know shops and cars. Shadetree told me after their inspection that it had a VSC light on. NOT TRUE. The problem was that they put their equipment on it for testing set something off and then failed to correct it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called after I drove off and explained that the problem was never there till it went to them. Shadetree gave it back to me, maybe hoping I would pay them to correct the problem I allegedly had going in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They said bring it in a couple days later to see if it could be resolved. it took them three minutes to correct the problem that I had identified-they did not charge but they should have given it back just as I brought it in.. Unprofessional, deceitful and slimy auto mechanics. Yes they have a high rating but they blew up my sale, wasted my time and lied to me. I wonder how many others have gone through this and never said anything or charged them. I had an incident where I went somewhere closer to my apartment out of convenience and the auto shop gave me an invoice for $1300 trying to tell me I needed all these things added to my car. I brought it here for a second opinion and they said my breaks were rusted and they just needed to be cleaned and greased up. I only had to pay $120 for an hour of their time. Gave me a wrong diagnostic for my Acura and said it was transmission related but it turned out to be a bad gear shifter that I got fixed and charged me $270. When they asked me if I was satisfied with the service I asked for a refund because it was not transmission related and that's when Dan said he was comfortable with his diagnostic and no refund will be issued. read more

Had something fixed, starter and some new spark plug wires and spark plugs for about $700 which is kind of obscene/ a price I think was steep, Turns out the starter wasnt even new it was rebuilt that makes it more absurd, & now a month later my car's just starting half the time so if you enjoy paying a bunch of money and having your car run for about a month this is a great place. More like SHADY-Tree! I took my SUV there for normal tune up. I picked it up, and nothing was said to me about any recommendations. I started to drive off and heard a terrible grinding noise coming from engine so I immediately turned around, still in the parking lot. I went back inside to talk about it, and they said, "yeah we noticed that too". I was furious because my car did not sound like that when I dropped it off. Turns out it was a bearing near the water pump and they had somewhere busted it while they had it. So I got my car back busted, and they wouldn't repair it because they "heard it too". Of course you heard it, you did it! After getting no where with them, and needing my car in proper working order to work, I took it to Bob's and they did a tremendous job. It sucks feeling helpless like that since I don't have a video of me driving up to the shop to show my car wasn't broken going in... Total crooks, please do not go there. read more

Second or third time we have been here and this time, we passed. We had a minor radiator leak from a hose or maybe a cap on our SUV. These guys took three days to get an answer that ended up being the same one as before with a whopping almost $1400 price tag! Rod had no real idea precisely what the problem was. I deal with maintenance issues non-stop as an airline pilot and have even run large shops in the Corps. I know when I am getting a bad answer. This was not only a bad answer, it was a gouge in my opinion. My recommendation is just to bypass Shadetree and that is a shame as they're a local shop. I don't give bad reviews eaBut management is not supervising properly. This might have been a $300 dollar job at the most. Beware of these guys! Addendum: got the repairs completed for less than half of Shadetree's gouge estimate. There are components to auto repair - did the repair fix the problem and was the price fair? I suspect many people never compare the price at Shadetree unaware they have been gouged. They don't know and give a great review because they fixed the problem even though they paid a ton compared to other shops. read more

Car overheated they said car needed the two thermostats changed, they supposedly changed them, but car overheated again two months later. Went to Shadetree again. They quoted me $890 they said that it might be the radiator but that they wouldn't know until it was changed. This time I towed my car to my usual car shop which quoted me a lot less to my surprise my mechanic said that they only changed one filter. He showed me how the seal on the bottom filter looked old he said if it would have been changed you see clean seal. I feel that they took advantage of me. I lost my grandfather and brother within this two months the money I was overcharged could have helped my family a lot. They charged the labor to change two filters and only did half the job. Also, they had a chance to rectify the mistake on my second visit and they chose not to. The two guys at the counter are great that's the only good thing I can say other than that I recommend that once Shadetree quotes you do yourself a favor and call other shops to compare cost to make sure they're charging you a fair price. read more
