    Octopus salad
    Roman K.

Since my last review on May 2023 we've visited Docas about dozen of times. Last 2 visits were Dec 9, 23 & Jan 19, 24. We finally were able get Goat Stew without reserving it. Yes! goat stew, it sells out! as do all their daily specials. One thing I noticed that they do is update their online menu daily and the daily specials sell out very quickly. Some of the specials are - rabbit, quail, goat, octopus. If your interested in the specials check the menu online, call and reserve.

Stumbled on Doca's with two work colleagues recently and we kept it really simple - grilled chicken over salad. We also tried the fish balls as an appetizer - I think they were cod? Delicious! Not a hint of grease (yes - they were fried) and small enough to enjoy as a shared appetizer. Everyone raved about their salads and even said, "how could something so simple be so good?". The salad dressing is just "oil and vinegar - Portuguese style". Really perfect, actually. Someone also said, "if I made this at home, it wouldn't be this good!". Since we were there for lunch, we all kept it light....but some of the other dishes on the menu sounded (and looked) outstanding. I would definitely go back!!

It's like a trip to Lisboa. I love this place. Food is authentic and staff are actually Portuguese. I always order the bifana sandwich (off menu item) and garlic clams. it bring me back to my time in Lisbon. Just need some ginja and the experience will be complete.

Went on a Saturday early evening and the place was pretty full. It's a very causal atmosphere. The food is solid. Nothing fancy. Just good Portuguese food. They give you this really nice fresh baked peasant bread. We got the vegetable soup to start. It was a delicious, thick soup It had cabbage and beans. The entrées were very good too. The fish was seasoned and broiled perfect.

My wife and I went to Docas despite the so-so reviews. We were looking for something different. Well I am glad we did. The food was excellent and the portions were huge. There did seem to be only one server but she did a very good job of taking care of everyone. My wife and I ordered steaks. She had the Grilled T-bone and I had the Grilled T-bone Docas Style with shrimp and clams. We were both very happy with our meals. Give this place a shot. http://www.foodspotting.com/91300

Amazing Portuguese food. Our waiter was great. The place is open restaurant and bar all in one room..highly recommend .very reasonable prices for the big portions of food. .will definitely be back.

    Sunday family dinner at Doca's

Family style Portuguese gathering spot with fantastic recipes I'd never tasted in the States. We had greens and homemade sausage soup, olives and bread, chicken blood stew, whole cod, lots of veggie sides. Enormous portions which we gleefully wrapped up for home. This must have been what Duarte's in Pescadero was like in its first years. --A young waitress who could be running the whole country; I loved watching her handle 50 things at once w/o blinking. This is a place to be respectful if you are a visitor; and I loved showing my appreciation to be included.

We came on a Saturday night around 8:00pm and the restaurant was packed, with diners filling every room and even the bar area. Thankfully we had reservations and were seated right away. Parking can get tight on busy nights, so we used the valet, which made things easier. We started with a table favorite, chouriço, perfect for sharing while settling in. I ordered one of my go-to Portuguese dishes, Carne à Alentejana, tender cubes of pork loin sautéed with little neck clams, wine, and fresh cilantro. It delivered exactly what I was hoping for, savory, balanced, and deeply comforting. Others at the table enjoyed the broiled Mediterranean octopus and the Chilean sea bass with caper sauce, both well prepared. Service was attentive throughout, and they even offer to take a table photo for you. Portions are generous, the dining room is spotless, and the classic crumb-scraping after the meal is a nice old-school touch. Short of heading to Newark's Portuguese enclave, this is one of the best options in the area.

This is a small, compact place with about 2 dozen tables, but the tables are large enough and arranged well so that you don't feel crowded in. They have a small bar, but not for sitting, just serving. Everything seemed to be clean. The restaurant fills up very quickly; so you definitely need reservations. We both ordered a glass of chardonnay from Chile and lobster bisque, and we split an arugula salad. For the main course my Son ordered veal scallopini and I had the rabbit. For dessert we shared the Molotoff, which is a merengue. I had espresso and my Son a cappucino. At the beginning, they brought some nice fresh bread with a choice of butter or olive oil. The soup was so delicious with tender lobster chunks (best I've had in years). At that point I was thinking of giving a rating of 5, but then my entre was disappointing. The sauce was good, but the rabbit was tough and tasteless. My Son enjoyed his scallopini. The salad, although not exceptional, was good. We also unexpectedly received some vegetables on the side with our entre. The dessert and coffee were also good and blessedly light because the portions here are huge. We were very stuffed by the time we left. I would definitely return if, for no other reason, the soup; but I would order a different entre - maybe a pasta.

As Dana mentioned, when you walk in the building, you will need to turn left and walk past the lively bar (where there will likely be a round football game on TV), before you arrive at Aldeia. Far more subdued than its neighbor on our weekend visit, with well spaced tables draped with white tablecloths, the overall effect is of eating at your avó's after Sunday mass, when important company has been invited over: homey, but special occasiony. Aldeia features simple, straightforward Portuguese standards. There are a lot of grilled options and seafood options, a whole section for bacalhau preparations. (Menu here: https://www.portugueseculturalcenter.org/restaurantmenu) For those who are unused to the practice in Portugal and many other parts of Europe, be aware that there is a couvert -- bread and olives brought out automatically at the start of the meal, for which there is an extra charge. You can refuse it as we did at first. (I hate when our littles fill up on bread and butter and eat nothing else during the meal.) But when the appetizers we ordered (e.g. chouriço) came without the described bread, we relented and asked for the couvert. I was mildly irked at being strong armed into oredering it at first, but those slightly spicy black olives were good enough that I couldn't stay mad for long. We shared a few appetizers: - Chouriço assado - chouriço flambe ("chouriço served on fire with bread") -- Flames are always a hit with the littles and they enjoyed the fat, snappy-skinned, smokey sausage, broiled to taste. The chouriço was chunkier than many commercial versions, conceivably house made. (We've had similar from Erika Nakamura and Jocelyn Guest.) - Frango à passarinho ("fried chicken") -- Undersalted by our standards, not noticeably seasoned, but the chicken was admirably moist, quickly fried at high heat. We are more accustomed to the Brazilian version of this dish and missed the accompaniment of lime and cilantro. - Caldo verde -- a version where a small amount of potato or other starch had been completely pureed into the soup with a small amount of kale and a few bits of chopped chouriço. This was a little too much like Knorr's for my tastes. I personally prefer versions where potato and kale have a less wimpy presence. - Salada de polvo ("octopus, onions, peppers and herbs") -- I am a sucker for this dish (no pun intended) and loved the roughly chopped versions I had at humble seaside cafes in the Azores especially. This version was a elevated version with finely minced onions and peppers, a good amount of olive oil, and delicate slivers of slippery-skinned polvo playing hide and seek in this suspension. - Robalo escalado (grelhado, alho e azeite, vegetais e batatas cozidas) -- The fish was on the smaller side, but fresh and impeccably grilled. Vegetables -- a few broccoli florets, batons of carrot, and potatoes -- were served boiled. It's not my favorite treatment, but they were made far more palatable with the dressing of minced garlic still pale from a quick sautee in oil. - Frango grelhado ("grilled chicken, rice and fries OR small salad and vegetables of the season") -- The Pardner's good angel didn't stand a chance against the prospect of rice AND fries, but sadly, when I tasted it, the rice was a bit hard and the fries soggy, undersalted, and -- oh cardinal sin! -- not served with ketchup. :) The chicken preparation again demonstrated some admirable culinary skills: it was wonderfully moist despite being sliced thin and grilled. But again, the preparation was underseasoned and undersalted for our personal tastes. Another note on authenticity: The service is very....... relaxed, as it is in the Azores and the homeland. We were the only diners in the establishment for some time, but there were long, long lags in service. I have to speculate that our server may have been working the bar room as well given how hard it was to flag him down. (He was quite nice whenever we succeeded in doing so.) It's a shame that I'm an impatient New Yorker. I try to relax into the wait, but I'm not sure I can entirely embrace that in this lifetime.
