The restaurant had a full bar, and the server was able to provide us with a verbal draft list, but it was a bit odd not to have a printed drinks menu. We are at Holden twice a year and had never tried this since it replaced Capt. Pete's Seafood many years ago. Finally, this trip, we gave it a shot, and I'm so glad we did! We ended up getting takeout from there three times during the week, and there are no pics because every time we brought it in the house, it looked and smelled so good everyone dug right in and demolished it! Tried to come here the other night for diner but they were at capacity... okay, people like this place! Came back today for a late lunch and was very happy with our experience. The waitress was very sweet and helpful and was never far away from us. I had the Seafood Pot Pie, which was great; almost like a chowder with a flaky crust. I got a side salad that was better than what you'll get 90% of the time... not a pale iceberg disappointment, lots of good stuff in there. My wife had the fantail shrimp, broiled, and they were quite tasty. We finished off with a slice of key lime pie that got a thumbs up from both of us. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and the decor is the usual seaside-rustic. Interesting that none of the local Holden Beach seafood places score above a 3.X on this platform; here's my vote that the Dock House deserves better. read more

Bottom line: Dock House Seafood & More is a nice local seafood house to visit. My side Caesar salad and hushpuppies were good here. My crab cakes tasted good but were very mushy inside, not as set as I was used to having. I would give 3.5 stars here but round up to 4 stars for pleasant/helpful service during the meal and local atmosphere. The Deets: When at the beach, you seek out seafood near you usually and on this recent trip to Holden Beach we did just that (I am usually not a big seafood eater but go with the crowd when at the beach). We tried out Dock House on the island, just beside/under the bridge to get on the island. It looks like your average local seafood house you'd find at the beach, with plenty of outside seating near the Intracoastal Waterway as well as inside seating. After a small wait (we did not make a reservation), we were shown to the upper floor to our table. Our server was very friendly and helpful throughout our visit. The table got an array of starters, but I chose their small side Caesar salad to start my meal off. Everyone remarked how good it looked when it arrived and it tasted just as great as it looked, I enjoyed it and it was just the right size for starters. For my meal I chose their Maryland Style Crab Cakes (as I usually do at seafood restaurants, again not a big seafood eater here) with hushpuppies. When they arrived they looked good and as I started to eat them they tasted OK. However, when eating them I noticed the inside was pretty "mushy" and not as done as I am used to myself, which I could guess would be too much filler or not cooked until the filler was completely done around the meat. The hushpuppies were good, I always enjoyed hushpuppies and these were no different. Again, our server was there to check on our beverages and was very pleasant throughout the meal. Although my crab cakes make me want to go 3.5 stars for Dock House, I will say 4 stars for pleasant and helpful service, great Caesar salad and hushpuppies in a local seafood house type atmosphere. read more

We had a fantastic experience here tonight! The young ladies at the hostess stand were sweet and offered to take our picture when we stopped to watch the sunset before being seated. The salmon was delicious and I would definitely order it again! I got a side salad (definitely try the house made cucumber wasabi dressing) and sweet potato fries as my side dishes. This review is based on what's in the area which is a small family oriented beach. We sat at the bar and the bartender was good and given it's largely tourist she was helpful to visitors and obviously had a relationship with regulars. I was seated quickly and my order was taken, I was on an upper patio with a view of the pretty industrial inner channel. Saturday evening, lots of kids, friendly patrons. My first (see below) beer came quickly -- they didn't have slices of blood orange, but managed a little lemon for my hefeweizen -- the salad with grilled mahi mahi was unexceptional but totally acceptable So, nice ambience, good location, reasonably day service, acceptable food. I'm still a little confused by what happened, after my drink came, I went to the bathroom, and they bused my table. I came back to nothing. They replaced the drink in like six minutes, I don't know if it delayed dinner, but I advise that you tell your server if you leave the table. They blamed an overaggressive busser, that guy came out and apologized. It was a surprisingly displacing feeling, I guess it was because I was dining alone. I'm an affluent middle aged cisgender heterosexual married white man, if I hadn't been all of those things I would have attributed it to prejudice, but I don't really have a bucket for microaggressions. 10 out of 10! We went as a family of 7 ( 5 children) on a Friday night at prime time 6:00. Did we have a wait? Yes but it was short and we knew that going in. We were able to get drinks for adults and kids alike at the bar while we waited and passed the time with no complaints on the dock watching the boats come in and out. Once seated our waitress was right to us and went out of her way to make sure everyone had exactly what we needed. Food was insanely good. Like better than the $60 plus per plate you'll get in Calabash. The triggerfish was some of the best fresh fish we have ever had. We travel up and down the east coast and eat out often, so that is saying something! Menu was three times the size of any comparable restaurant around. There was something for everyone even the pickiest of our group. Plates & drinks all priced more than fairly. Heading back tonight & will be a regular stop for our crew. read more

I was appalled at the service and the quality of the food! We were seated immediately then had 1 waitress then got passed off to another. I had a cup of the she crab soup which definitely came out of a can and the wedge salad with blackened oysters. Back again at Dock House for dinner. Wait time 15 minutes on a Sunday evening... not bad. I wasn't impressed with the young hostesses though. I know it's a part time gig and they don't want to be there but maybe fake it for the customers. My daughter & I usually come after a full day at the beach so sitting outside is always a plus to watch the waterway traffic. This visit I tried the crab cakes dinner plate with grilled veggies. The crab cakes were thick and tasty though not hot, like they'd been made earlier and the grilled veggies were ok but they were cold. Ginger our waitress tried to warn me I think about the grilled veggies asking if I would prefer a sweet potato instead. But I stuck with the veggies only to have them sent back because they were cold. My mistake, should have taken Gingers advice. The Pomegranate Martini was very good. Definitely recommend that drink and the strawberry daiquiri my daughter ordered was also very well made. No chunks of ice is a huge plus. I wish they'd broaden their menu, they have versatile dishes yet they could use a little more options in my opinion. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and I'm sure we'll be back. read more

It was tasty but only about six shrimp and no discernible blackening. The hush puppies came out after our meal, which was disappointing. My husband ordered a seafood combo and fried plantains. He really liked everything but said the plantains tasted a bit onion-y. He suspected the same oil was used for the hush puppies. Our server was pleasant. I could tell she had too many tables -she seemed to be running around carrying food every time we saw her so we tried to be patient and kind. Nice views of the ICW. Coming here I had high hopes. There was a line out the door with a 30 minute wait for my party . Once we were seated we all ordered waters and the seafood queso for an appetizer. Do not recommend. The cheese tasted like concession stand nacho cheese and it was burnt on the top. Definitely not worth the price . Two people in my party ordered the shrimp and roasted tomato garlic pasta . It was OK. It had maybe 3 shrimp in it, the noodles were soggy and the sauce was gritty. Another member in my party ordered the calabash shrimp and it was ok . Really basic and lacking flavor. Another member of my party ordered the shrimp tacos and they were extremely soggy and the taco shell was hard as a rock . This place was definitely not worth the price or the 30 minute wait. This is one of the very few places I've had to not recommend to people, I will start with the good and then tell the bad, The Good: Restaurant is clean Staff is very friendly The Music is good The Views are very nice I liked the buffalo chicken dip but the bread slices were sub par, was better with the potato chips they give you as a side. There was a cool otter swimming around outside The Bad: We got here at 4:45 on a Tuesday during peak season, the restaurant was empty and they made us wait 30 minutes to be seated, there was only one group of people sat when we walked in to the very empty establishment. Most of us ordered burgers which were very over cooked and dry, mine tasted like it was dipped in salt. My Mountain Dew was completely flat so I got a water which honestly wasn't bad for how salty the food was. We were kinda forgotten about somehow and under-served The place seems to only employee kids, very few adults.
