This is probably my favorite in getting soft shell crabs and fried oysters. This place used to be crowded and hard to get into as the locals frequented here. They gave new menus as the prices have increased. Still this restaurant has the best tasting seafood in the Myrtle Beach area. Gotta love seafood shacks with good food. Was getting hungry as it was after lunchtime, and was really in the mood for some good seafood. Looking atYelp, I saw that the Calabash Seafood Hut had very good reviews and resolved to give it a try. My experience started with a warm smile and friendly greeting by the friendly young lady at the counter. Being a sucker for softshell crab, I ordered the softshell crab sandwich (poorboy) and a soft drink. (Should have had the sweet tea -- free refill, darn it.) There are outdoor picnic tables as well as an indoor seating area. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed my delicious meal outside. Yum! So glad I came in for a meal. Not sure when my travels will bring me to this neck of the woods, but would be happy to have more meals here. read more

I usually love the food from here. Yesterday's pickup was not the same experience. The bowl of clam chowder that I bought was not the full amount that I normally get. The hush puppies were old tasting, and the french fries were limp. The slaw was very runny with mayonnaise. The shrimp and the flounder weren't as fresh as I have normally experienced. I am unsure if this will be my go to place in the future. read more

The food was to greasy, the oysters were over cook and the scallops was so tough you couldn't eat them, the fish wasn't flounder, the meal was terrible. What a disaster. We were seated fairly quickly and our waitress got our drink and food order quickly. And that was the last thing positive that happened during the meal. After placing our orders we had to wait for 1 hour and 15 minutes before our food arrived and it WAS NOT worth the wait. We had a shrimp and flounder platter and while the restaurant claims to be all about fresh, local seafood the shrimp were the most pathetic things I have ever seen. They had to be frozen and almost assuredly imported from Asia. Most were smaller than my pinky finger fingernail (see photo), had no taste and a very odd texture. The shrimp were so small there is no way they could have stayed in a trawler's net which also indicates that they were imported. There hush puppies were also very strange. Being a southerner I have had a lot of hush puppies in my life but haven't had any like these. They were actually chewy and had almost no flavor. Very strange. Overall, this place was a disaster and absolutely not worth your time. Our waitress was nice but other than that I would highly recommend you go somewhere else. Actually, go to Island Seafood Company and ask them what is fresh, take it home and cook it yourself. You will be way happier. read more

They do not offer a shrimp Po' Boy because that would be served somewhat open-faced. They serve the shrimp sandwich on a burger bun so you do not realize they are using salad shrimp in Calabash. Service was fine, kind Ladies all. read more

This place has really gone down hill from when we moved here 8 years ago. They used to have good food. Th flounder was awful and the shrimp were bland and were those tiny ones like you get in a can. I guess if you've never had a good fish you might think this is good. But there are so many places around calabash and North Myrtle to get good fish that I would avoid this one. Oh my goodness, the shrimp is so fresh it melts in your mouth! Don't be distracted by the big glitzy digs in Calabash. The Seafood Hut is classic Calabash style seafood. The dining room is vintage with a combo of photos of the family who and nautical themed decor. Arrive by 4 to get the lunch special. But any time of day gets you the same friendly and prompt service. At peak lunch hours, you might have to wait in line, but it moves quickly and definitely worth the wait! You're just as likely to sit down next to a local or a return visitor from up north. We ended up at the Seafood Hut after sadly discovering our other eatery choices in the area were closed for the season. At first I thought the place was a bit endearing, as it gave off a dive diner ambiance and was filled with elderly local regulars...but this was by no means a hidden gem. The "cheap special", at $12 a place, was a con where we got exactly what we paid for.. Trying to explore 'SC Calabash', we ordered two lunch specials: one with flounder & shrimp - one with clams & crab. I knew things weren't going to be great when the waitress didn't ask broiled or fried..incoming plate of fried eats. Out came a very small plate of fried seafood, with crinkle cut fries straight out of the freezer luke-warmed, the grossest looking pile of probably canned coleslaw, and the saddest looking basket of hushpuppies. The 'seafood' was all breading- and while we had ordered four different items, I am adamant my husband's plate was all shrimp no flounder, while mine was mostly clams w. a very tiny breading filled crab shell. The fries were clearly frozen oven fries that were under cooked, the coleslaw was watery and too mayo at the same time, and I needed to douse the hushpuppies in hot sauce for flavor. Overall, the food flopped. Then our experience got worse because attempting to check out took almost longer than the meal did. A waitress scanned our chip in the reader then left. The reader sat beeping with our card, while we stood outside at the window in the cold. She then handed me my receipt, but when I went to leave she began to yell at me saying I was stealing her copy & I didn't listen to her. Food & service both swing and a miss. An elderly lady in the parking lot, also sad to discover nearby eateries were closed, asked if we just ate there and what would my review be..I was pleased to provide a live Yelp rating to ensure while our lunch was awful theirs wouldn't be. read more

Went today and had the worst service ever! Waited and watched others being served. This was after we were asked to wait outside. We. Went out side and waited while 4 groups left. Went back in to get a table and was greeted by a waitress that muttered under her breath " People just don't listen". Had someone come outside to get us, we wouldn't have gone back in by ourselves. So at the table we were seated at we watched and waited and waited. When the food came it was hot and freshly prepared. In old oil. Yuck! We barely ate and paid and left. Delicious calabash style seafood in a no-frills, diner atmosphere. Meals are served with a delicious coleslaw and crinkle fries. My spouse got the clam strips and it was a huge portion! Two meals worth. I got the deviled crab and they were very tasty. Service was quick and they have all you can eat hush puppies although they are not my favorite. A little bit more on the bland side than most of the other restaurants in the area. Would definitely return on a trip back to the area. read more

This is a great place. Limited menu and it's all fried. (That's what Calabash is known for) Walk up to the take out window and sit on the picnic tables or eat inside. It's nothing fancy but it's great fun. Open all year. No booze. Cheap eats and delicious. Even though it's fried it's not overly greasy. It's an original family business. Not too big but wonderful. Have I changed or has the food? Cute dive is where we used to go for seafood from Myrtle Beach all the time when my parents were still with us. It's not as good as I remember. Key points - if you order unsweetened tea you only get the option of sweet n low for a sweetener. On the lunch special your fries come on top of your seafood. There weren't very many and they were terrible because they don't salt them-Because they say, so many people have dietary restrictions for salt. What? Typically people with dietary restrictions order special, and restaurants accommodate that. These fries were horrible. And you know you can't put salt on a warm fry. I got the calabash shrimp and fried clam strips. Well, I got a couple of clam strips and a whole bunch of clam "fingernails". Just tiny bits that were almost all breading. See picture. The shrimp was good enough. I'll give it a four. But for calabash style, I feel like the breading was still a bit heavy even though it was on the light side. It seemed heavy for calabash. Or maybe like it sat there. Is it possible the seafood sits and is re-warmed? The breading texture kind of felt that way, but I'm not accusing them of this because I don't know. Also, I disliked the hush puppies. They have a very smooth outer finish and very little flavor and no sweetness. I just happen to like the sweet crunchy rough on the outside and sweet and moist on the inside kind of hush puppy. These are the opposite in every way. If we make our way back to calabash for this famous style of seafood, we will choose somewhere else and give it a try. A sad end to a happy era for us. read more

My parents have been talking about this place and the seafood was as good as they said. I had the small platter which was almost too much for me. This place has a locals vibe but everyone is friendly. The only issue was it was cash only since there was a technical problem so some people missed out. As I entered the restaurant, I stood at the front door for 8 minutes before I was greeted. Our server was clean, professional, and knowledgeble of the food. It is not her fault the food is absolutely terrible!. She did her job well and served us with a smile and earned a well deserved tip for bringing out the food. I ordered the original seafood platter for $34.00. My father had the softshell crab sandwich for $16.00 and my mother had the senior platter for $16.00 shrimp and flounder. The softshell crab was not even crispy. My fish was mushy. As soon as I took a bite, it crumbled and stuck together like a fish paste. I had to discreetly spit it out in a napkin. The scallops were rubbery and burnt. AWFUL!!!! It was like I was chewing an eraser! The shrimp also tasted burnt and they are about 1/2 an inch long. You get about 20 of them. Once again, I would not serve this food to my worst enemy. The whole platter was God Awful. Also, none of it was fresh and it tasted recooked or microwaved. The liver was like a sponge filled with oil. If you were choking on anything, you could probably squeeze spoonful of oil out of a piece of liver to help you swallow your food. I'm sorry..... But the new management/ owners here should be ashamed for charging $84 for that food. You can tell that the cook has lost his or her passion once you taste the food. SAVE YOUR MONEY! Stopped for lunch today. Ordered two lunch specials where you have a choice of two types of seafood. Ordered one with Flounder & Shrimp, and one with Clams & Crab so we could try all four seafood options. All were excellent! Also hush puppies, coleslaw, and fries were also excellent. In my opinion, this is the best place to get seafood in Calabash, provided that you are all about the food and not a bunch of extras. The Seafood Hut is a no frills experience. Everything about the building is dated, and when dining in is safe again, the dining room is quite small. You also can't make any kind of reservation or put your name on the list, the system for getting a table is waiting in line outside. Sometimes the heat makes that a challenge even in the shade with ceiling fans! If you can get past those drawbacks, this place is the best value for a person who just wants lots and lots of seafood at a decent price. They have all the favorites, shrimp, scallops, oysters, clams, flounder, crab, etc. in all their deep fried goodness. You can also get them boiled/broiled if you prefer, but you're on vacation right? For me, I like a plate of shrimp, scallops, and crab. If you're into softshell crab, you'll find a tasty treat here. Anyway, there is not a shortage of places to get your seafood fix in Calabash... but Seafood Hut has the same ocean fresh fish for a much lower price, if you don't mind giving up a few creature comforts! read more

Definitely end of an era. This place was recommended as a locals favorite when I moved to NMB in 1986. It was the best fried seafood around and absolutely the best flounder. We got to go plates almost every weekend for years. Over the years I have eaten inside at times but mostly to go, and the to gos were always just as good as inside. I have recommended it to hundreds over the years but never will again. The plate I got tonight was awful. Everything was greasy and soggy. Shrimp and oysters sitting in grease. The smell of the grease coming from the plate in the car on the drive home was of old used grease, and the cheap kind. I had to spit out parts if the fish that was undercooked, and parts of the oysters that were extremely, and oddly, chewy. None of it tasted fresh. I only had about 5 oysters on the plate. This restaurant started going downhill a few years ago so I've eaten there less and less but tonight was the worst and the last. And they now expect a tip for to go orders. Friendly service, traditional seafood hut. Fried seafood ordered all around by our table. Scallops were very good as were shrimp and flounder. Unfortunately we found the fried items to be more greasy than some had experienced prior, and hush puppies were not as hot or tender as preferred, hence the drop to 4 stars. The coleslaw is quite wet, chopped in to small pieces so not our preference. Good, not great. Will likely try another of many in area before returning to this location. read more
