I came here to Cosmo burger to get some food and I have my daughter with me. It's apparently against the rules for them to serve water at this establishment if you have a kid with you. The ambiance is okay. Loud. But I just come here for the burgers.

Dodson's Bar & Commons was well worth the drive from the Northland. I only wished we had a neighborhood gathering place with awesome craft cocktails and uber friendly mixologists. The best decision we made on our first visit was to sit at the bar. There is plenty of seating elsewhere, but that's where you'll develop the greatest appreciation for what makes this place so special. We are big fans of the Suffering Bastard cocktail (made with Bourbon and Gin) and that was an easy first selection. Paul, one of the bartenders, explained how they made their version of the drink. The citrus flavoring was the difference maker. Paul led us thru the best drinks on their menu, plus some that aren't, each with a unique hook. My wife who is our house mixologist appreciated him showing her the various liquors and allowing her to smell what made each special. John, another bartender we met, was equally friendly and engaging. Beyond the great drinks and conversation, you can't beat the Happy Hour prices that end at 7pm. Next I ordered the Cock & Bull, followed by the spicy Mango Habanero Gimlet. My wife really loved the Don't Give Up The Ship, the Last Word and White Negroni. All were exceptional and would be ordered again. If you're not into cocktails, they have a wide selection of draft and canned beers. An added reason to visit is the Cosmo Burgers ghost kitchen located inside Dodson's. I'll review it separately. So you can have drinks and a meal. We can't wait to return and bring some local and out-of-town friends to enjoy the warm welcome we felt

Paul is a great bartender go see him. The place is cozy and chill. We stopped in on a whim and I am glad we did :)

@dodsonsbarwaldo What a place!! Games, drinks, and chill environment. Drinks to try - Cock & Bull and El Diablo. Also they have a great happy hour. We went on a Saturday and cocktails are $3 OFF!

The bartenders are amazing, especially Sarah. She works super hard and is very detail oriented and friendly. I appreciate her! (Paul, John and Deon are cool, too).

Happened to walk by this place because a nearby rooftop was closed for an event. Love the vibe! $5 cocktails from 4-7pm, such a great deal!! Staff was really nice and atmosphere gives the downtown feel. Can't wait to come back to KC!

I was in another place a few weeks ago, where the bartenders were discussing Dotsons being the best cocktails. I decided to stop in recently. A fairly small place with a dozen tables or so and the same for bar seats. I admit to being a rookie in the cocktail arena. Asked for a suggestion and got a Last Word cocktail. It was quite good. Then got a Suffering Bastard, less good. I know this is personal taste. I am always on the look out for the best burger in KC. Co-located is Cosmo Burger. All they sell is burgers of various sizes and add ones. Only side is tots. It was only just ok. Certainly doesn't rank. Main problem for me was the cost. If you drink these cocktails, better bring your checkbook. They do offer a full bar with everything, however. It wasn't so special that I will return.

Stopped in this local bar while waiting to meet some friends, yelp help me pick this out this neighborhood bar. We walked in and felt like we weren't strangers right away. Often when you go into a new bar everyone looks at ya and you can automatically feel the judgment, none here. We sat at the bar and immediately greeted by one of the bartenders. He gave us a rundown of some of the cocktails and made a couple of recommendations. I ordered the El Diablo (tequila, cassis, lime & ginger beer) and he ordered the Horse Feather(bitters, rye whiskey & spicy ginger beer). We watched our bartender mix them up upon ordering. His had a slight heat to it but wasn't too spicy. Both of ours had a good balance of liquor vs ginger beer. My second cocktail was the margarita, so light and refreshing. As we walked out, I saw some colleagues visiting for the first time as well. The place started getting busy, so want to come by back and stay longer.

Used to love it. Too bad the owners are ok with having a bartender being an absolute jerk. If you want poor service, ask for Sarah.

As a Vietnam veteran, I'm very aware of my surroundings, and something about today's experience felt off. I arrived during happy hour and ordered a drink, assuming it was part of the happy hour menu. I later realized it wasn't, and I left feeling a bit taken advantage of. I understand that a happy hour menu is provided, but I didn't realize I needed to specifically ask which items were included. No one behind the bar explained the pricing differences or mentioned that what I ordered was not part of the happy hour offerings. Clear communication would have prevented the misunderstanding. When I received my bill, it was about twenty dollars more than I expected. I asked about the charges calmly and respectfully -- I never raised my voice, even though it was difficult in the moment. The bartender simply told me, "That's what you ordered." She's a very sweet woman, but she didn't seem to realize I was upset, and shortly after that she stepped away. That's when I spoke with Hannah. Hannah is truly exceptional. She immediately understood my disappointment and asked if I wanted her to remove the extra charges. I declined, because my frustration wasn't about the money -- it was about the lack of attentiveness and the absence of honest, proactive communication I expect from a respectable establishment. Hannah handled the situation with grace, kindness, and professionalism. She has a personality that stands out the moment you meet her, and she made it hard for me to stay upset. My real concern was the overall experience. During the hour and a half I was there, the bar was never busy -- never more than two people -- until a woman who works at Starbucks arrived with her boyfriend. It was clear the bartender knew them, and the level of attentiveness shifted noticeably. While I understand taking care of friends, it made me feel overlooked as a paying customer. I spent nearly a hundred dollars during my visit, yet I received almost no conversation or engagement from the staff. I'm not a young man, and I'm certainly not in the same age group as the bartender's friends, but that shouldn't affect the level of service. I own a business in Brookside and often recommend local restaurants to my clients. Today's experience left me feeling neglected and uncomfortable, and it has made me reconsider those recommendations. In the end, I wasn't upset about the cost -- I was disappointed by the lack of communication and the absence of effort to make guests feel acknowledged and comfortable. Hannah was the bright spot in an otherwise discouraging visit.

That changed yesterday, when Diana Condori, the bar manager, was named a 2026 James Beard Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service semifinalist. As we love supporting restaurants and bars that receive that kind of recognition, my wife and I headed to Fern Bar that evening. I was especially curious what exactly a "sugarcane and agave bar" meant. We arrived around 5:30pm and found only a handful of guests inside. After congratulating the bartender who first served us, he mentioned that Diana was working that night and would stop by to meet us. During our conversation, Diana shared that she didn't even know she had been nominated. She woke up Tuesday to a call from owner Bryan Arri, who said he had big news and was coming over. Her first thought was that something terrible had happened--like the bar had burned down. Instead, he showed up with coffee and told her she was a James Beard honoree. Diana is originally from Bolivia and has lived in Kansas City most of her life, with the exception of time spent in San Francisco during the pandemic. She further refined her cocktail craft through local pop-ups in Kansas City under the name Condor's Cove. When Bryan was preparing to open Fern Bar, he reached out to bring her onto the team. The printed cocktail menu immediately reminded me of the Monarch and the Mercury Room--not surprising given Bryan's background at Manifesto and the Monarch. Thoughtful, intentional, and clearly designed for people who appreciate serious cocktails. We planned on having one or two drinks but ended up staying for three, thanks to an outstanding lineup and a memorable conversation with Diana. We tasted: * No Fly Zone - Rum, agave, pineapple foam * Mr. Collage - Smooth, elegant, egg-white cocktail * Three Negroni Lunch - Bitter, boozy, and beautifully balanced * Pendergast No. 4 - Complex and spirit-driven * It's Bananas - Banana liqueur with bright tropical notes * Off the Rails - Creative and well-executed rum/agave cocktail One downside of many cocktail-forward bars is the lack of food, but Fern Bar offers two varieties of mini burritos for $4--just enough protein to keep things balanced while indulging. Great concept, exceptional service, and truly memorable drinks. Check it out--and be sure to say hello to Diana.

It was adorable and the drinks were divine. Around Christmas they do a popup bar and in 2025 it was themed around a ski lodge. We tried to versions of the old fashioned on the menu and though we did like one over the other both were well balanced cocktails. After we ordered our libations the bartender suggested we head upstairs where it was less crowded and it was so cozy we felt like we were in someone's living room. Another couple joined us and we ended up having such a lovely conversation with them, chatting all about our favorite hot spots in Kansas City (gotta love KC pride). Just a note this is a slightly hidden speakeasy inside a pizza place, you need to have a password but it's easily found on their social media pages- just check Instagram. On our way out we decided to get a slice of pie (pizza pie that is) to balance out all that whiskey we washed down. I believe the one we got to go was called The Bee-sting, it had pepperoni and hot honey and though it was simple it hit the spot after a night of imbibing. I would most definitely revisit common tiger even without the winter aesthetic.

So another time. My only issue with the space is that I think it closely neighbors the kitchen. It was quite hot inside. To be fair, it was a hot day but still. I tried the Running of the Bullshit: blanco tequila, pineapple, lime, and smoked honey. It was good. The smoked honey was a tad overpowering but overall not bad. I'd probably opt for a different cocktail next time. I had a sip of the watermelon moonshine: blanco tequila, watermelon, grenadine, lemon, luxando, plum bitters, and topo Chico. It was watermelon! But it was good. Very refreshing. Both cocktails were very visually appealing with fun accessories and accents. Definitely check them out!
