That dog did not turn out to be a good match for me but Chloe introduced me to a smaller, older dog whose temperament was a great match. She approved a one week trial and the dog has been with us ever since. He's a little sweetie! I imagine others might not have considered him because he's an older dog, but I feel so lucky to have him. Adopted a Chihuahua from this rescue & reunited her with her brother that I adopted from the LA Animal Shelter. They seem to do a lot of work with the LA Chesterfield Shelter which is extremely overcrowded since the pandemic at nearly double capacity. So any rescue that is helping to save animals from these overcrowded LA shelters is doing a good thing. Adoption fee is a bit higher than others but it's going to a worthy cause and helps to find lifelong forever homes for these beautiful animals. Good communication and easy to work with. We just adopted our 2nd pup from Dogs Without Borders, and once again, the experience has been terrific. Kim (whose title I'm not sure of but seems to act as a coordinator?) was friendly and fast to respond to my inquiry about the dog we were interested in. She answered all my questions and was flexible in helping me initiate the transfer on a schedule that worked for us. Most of my interactions, though, have been with Katie, the foster mentor. Katie is just awesome- she was compassionate, knowledgeable, and encouraging, helping us work through some of the challenges of getting our new dog adjusted. I couldn't believe how quickly she'd get back to me with any questions I had- even on weekends. You can tell everyone involved with the organization is passionate about what they do. And I REALLY appreciate how they offer a foster-to-adopt situation where you get some time to really see how the dog does in your household and with your family members. They do their absolute best to give the most updated information about their rescued dogs to the public to get them into loving foster/adoptive homes. Then, it is the foster/adoptive parent to continue that responsibility to advocate and make the best decision for their foster/adoptive dog(s) so that they continue to have the best deserving life they can live. If you love dogs and would like to make a difference in their lives, DWB is one of those organizations that can provide a pathway towards that journey. I understand that the application process of fostering/adopting may seem daunting to some with DWB. However, for me, the process was quite easy because, ultimately, to provide all these answers and information to DWB was so that the dogs who are fostered/adopted are, indeed, in loving and trusting hands. My experience with DWB was a life-changing experience that I will truly cherish, as I now have two adoring adoptive senior dogs that have imprinted on my heart and are fur-ever a part of our family. In the end, the point of DWB mission is to give a new beginning of love and life to a dog that, otherwise, would have been surrendered to a shelter. Handing over $515 dollars for a dog you have never seen and it's supposed to be a "rescue" but you can buy the exact dog you want with embark testing / health guarantee's & a month free pet insurance for just a few hundred more feels to me like I'm not adopting, but buying this dog. DWB got the dog I selected 09/16 for $125, turned around & charged me $515 9 days later. Over the phone, prior to adopting Chloe said "Oh you need to see her immediately if you want her. There are 40 applicants already because they're so cute." (Yet all of her siblings are still on the site 3 days later.) Building urgency is a way to encourage someone to make a brash decision ie "If you don't get her today she will be gone tomorrow". She also said during that same phone call "if you don't want the dog, just let us know and we will refund the money." And I wasn't aware that it was an ON THE SPOT decision when you see the dog so I decided to give her a chance for 2 days because dogs deserve a chance :) However, she was just so small like a gerbil! I had to post on a forum to see if they thought my dog was actually 8 weeks old because she was so tiny & the vet paperwork they gave me said that she was born 08/02/24 & she was available to be adopted 09/27/24 (attached below). I adopted her 09/25/24 & they gave me this paperwork 5 hours after I took her home, meaning I paid for her before I even knew she was under 8 weeks old and I would have NEVER gotten her if I knew she was under 8 weeks. When I asked Chloe about this, Chloe decided she was a vet & looked at her teeth and "could tell" she was 8 weeks old by 09/19 (attached below) and ready to adopt despite LA Animal Shelter Harbor location (where DWB got my puppy) saying that it was wrong for DWB to adopt out this pet to me before 09/27/24 over the phone. Speaking of thinking you're a vet, DWB also has very strict rules regarding the food the dog can eat. I feed my dog Purina Pro Plan but According to Chloe, "Vets want your money and want your dog to be sick so Vets profit off recommending food brands" but if you search for foods that are healthy for your dogs by WSAVA, a group of 200,000 vets, purina pro plan is on there and none of the foods they are feeding their dogs are and studies show the foods they are feeding their dogs are linked to DCM dilated cardiomyopathy (they feed ORIJEN). The dog equivalent to being antivax pseudoscience should have been my first red flag. They also want you to CHANGE your food that is vet approved to their food due to this pseudoscience or else they do not feel "comfortable" giving the dog to you according to Chloe. Next was signing the paperwork and paying for a dog I have never seen & things in the paperwork are contingent on house visits in the future from dogs without borders, not owning the dog for months after you've already had it, changing the food you feed your dog to theirs etc etc. Essentially you're paying for a dog that they are micromanaging you for. No thank you. After I expressed a little concern to Chloe that this dog was a little too small, to play with my current dog (9lbs), she tried to condescendingly go "I know you've never adopted before, because you got your dog from a breeder BUT this is how this process works so you will have to surrender her now." And I was going to try to make this dog work for me after finding out it wasn't refundable as I thought it was, but Chloe goes "I wasn't born yesterday I'm not STUPID. I know you're going to try to sell her to make money because you don't like her" like girl what? Just making assumptions and claiming I'm trying to outsmart her or something? Girl relax lol. This dog would have been loved by me period and I would have supervised their play together & just waited until she got older but I had to surrender her & I didn't get a refund. Some positives though - The adoption process was quick & despite our miscommunication, Chloe isnt rude or mean, just misunderstood. She is direct and stern because she is a business woman at the end of the day and this is probably a stressful thing for her to do. She probably deals with crazy things & people all the time so it would likely make me the way she is as well. Kudos to people who adopt dogs & save them which I'm sure Dogs without borders does! But they profited off a dog that 100% would have been snatched up due to their pocket size. I would say that the profit they made was justified, but taking a look at the way they treat their fosters in the reviews section here will tell you otherwise. This entire process was arduous and rubbed me the wrong way. I wouldn't adopt from DWB again and it makes me not want to adopt a dog ever quite frankly. We have been on both sides of the programing that DWB provides - fostering and adoptions. Foster Program - We've fostered twice with DWB and their program is well organized. All supplies and any medication was provided. When I had concerns with one of my own pet having flea allergies, they made sure the foster dog was on their flea medication and provided extra preventatives. They even have a mentorship person where I could reach out with questions and concerns as well as a very informative guide to fostering on their website. If there is an emergency there are protocols in place. Adoption Program - As adopters from DWB I appreciated their thoroughness and home check steps to ensure the dog has a proper and safe placement. The adoption process was clear and communication was easy. Although fees are typically higher than adopting directly from the shelter, the funds help current and future dogs with their medical and care expense prior to adoption. I can't speak highly enough of DWB. I rescued my dog from there and fostered another too. They care so much about the animals which is why they have strict rules on who the animals can be adopted to. Those people saying they just care about money...it costs extortionate amounts to pull, care for and rehome the number of animals they have at any one time. Any fee paid for the dog goes straight back into rehoming another dog. For those who said they take too long to reply - I do get this is frustrating but they are just SO busy. If they had more money they could hire more people to get back to you quicker but you don't want them to charge more money....so it goes on. Before you write a bad review ask yourself what you are doing to save the life of animals day in day out. We need more rescues like DWB who actually care about the animals and have saved thousands. read more

She has brought us so much love! This was my first time fostering a dog and I did not regret it one bit! I found Dogs Without Borders while scrolling through Instagram. I saw they needed fosters urgently for several dogs with kennel cough. I agreed to foster little Dries. They provided me with everything I needed, even the medication for kennel cough. When I got him he was really sick and weak. About a week into having him his health wasn't getting better and I was really concerned. I immediately messaged Chloe who was very kind and reassured me that she was going to call the vet and let them know I was going to take him in. I love this organization because they will do whatever it takes to ensure the best interest of the dog first. I no longer have my little foster dog but I offer to help out with him when needed. I've fostered 4 dogs from this organization but my latest experience with DWB was so horrible that I'm utterly discouraged from ever wanting to help out a dog rescue organization again. I received a text message out of the blue from Kim, the DWB foster coordinator, asking if I would be available to foster short term. She said they were having issues finding fosters and knowing fully well about my situation (living in a studio in loud and busy city, not having a car, traveling often), she still viewed me as a suitable foster so I agreed to fostering for two weeks. With previous foster dogs, I've been completely transparent with Kim, Chloe Lawrence the DWB Director, and Nicole Lapidus, the foster mentor, on each dogs' needs and behavior. I was given no context on this new foster dog other than he was a bit shy, almost fully potty trained, and that he's learning to go on walks. On day two, I had to leave for an appointment and left the foster dog in his crate, provided by DWB, with his cone on and his dog blanket. On my way home, I stopped by the dog mentor Nicole's house to pick up more supplies for him, and when I arrived to my house, the dog had not only broken out of his crate by chewing through the metal wires, but he had also broken a few items in my house, and destroyed my living room and bedroom blinds. I found him in my closet and immediately sent Nicole a video capturing the entire scenario. Her first reaction was that we'd need to get him a better crate. She asked how long he'd been alone, to which I responded about 6 hrs, and she replied with, "that's wayyyyyyy too long" and to return him to Chloe's (director) asap. She showed no remorse or acknowledgment of the destruction that the dog had caused, and instead was more focused on the fact that he'd been left alone for 6 hours. I've looked over the safety information that was provided by Nicole and nowhere did I find that the dog had to be supervised 24/7 nor was there a time frame for what's acceptable to be away from the dog. To my surprise, I got a call from Chloe, and she began accusing me of, "trying to kill her dog" and she demanded that I drive him over to her house immediately. When I tried explaining the scenario to Chloe, she escalated the situation by hurling baseless accusations and threats at me by saying, "...and you're a dog walker?! I don't know who would even trust you with their dog! I'm going to report you to Rover, or whoever you work for! You could've killed my dog!" She displayed a shocking lack of professionalism and respect when she began shouting expletives and continued to demand that I bring the dog back to her immediately. Mind you, it's 6:30 pm on a Friday, prime traffic hour in LA and I let her know that I don't have a car to which she replied, "I don't care, I'll pay for your Uber, but you need to bring back my dog. Bring him back now!" I don't know who this woman thinks she is, but I truly didn't expect to be treated with such disrespect when I was literally trying to help them out. It's not like I asked to be a foster, they reached out to ME. Once she finally arrived, my boyfriend was kind enough to bring the dog and his belongings (crate, food, blankets, etc... all things they noted to be returned) down to her car. After he handed the dog off to her, he told her he still had to bring out the crate and she crassly responded with something along the lines of, "why would you give me back a broken crate?! I don't want that back!" and he let her know that the dog's supplies were in there. He graciously offered to load it into her car, patiently awaited her acknowledgement to open the trunk while she fussed on her phone, and once she finally did and he loaded everything in, she never said, "thank you" and just took off. Chloe's rudeness, lack of respect for other peoples homes, time, money, mental and physical energy is appalling and inexcusable. As the director, her accusatory and antagonistic nature tarnishes the vision and mission of what a dog rescue organization should uphold. DWB's unprofessional conduct, lack of accountability and toxic culture are undeniable red flags and makes this organization fall woefully short of its purported standards. Save yourself the trouble and choose a dog rescue organization that values both dogs and the individual's supporting them. read more

I have volunteered with DWB for just shy of two years now. I have fostered our fair share of dogs (and puppies!) and have always had a pleasant experience working with our foster mentor. I love being able to discuss with the new adoptive parents and following these animals into their forever homes. I had the privilege of actually adopting one of our fosters after we had him for 7+ months. Everyone was so kind and supportive despite us foster failing! The process was relatively quick and easy. There was an interview involved as well. Please remember that a lot of workers are volunteers and have a working/family life outside of rescuing all of these animals. There may be a delay in responses sometimes but everyone is working as hard as they can to help rescue these animals and put them in their forever homes. Thank you DWB for all that you do! They're highly selective and will scrutinize hopeful adopters intensely, but this is to try and find the most committed families for their dogs. I went through it a decade ago and while it was maybe a little frustrating, as I fell in absolute love with my dog I became impressed that if it hadn't been me to adopt her then it would have been someone equally committed and nurturing. If I'd had to find her a home I'd have been equally hardcore in the vetting process. I'll always be grateful that DWB pulled my pup from a kill shelter and gave her a path to my door. We had a great life together. I hope they continue to link up beautiful animals with dutiful, adoring caretakers for many years to come. My family recently fostered two puppies from DWB! It was our first experience and we were quite nervous but they did an excellent job of coaching us through it. They provided the necessary supplies and all we had to do was love and care for the puppies. Our experience here has been so wonderful and so touching. Although we have extensive animal experience (dogs, cats, horses), this was our first time fostering, and we wanted to be sure we were taking the very best care of our Lil Chuck, especially as we were nursing him back to health. I never ever write reviews but this was a very hurtful and traumatic experience for my children and I so I wanted to warn other families as there are hundreds of better animal charities that value both the dog's well being and the families supporting them. We went into this whole experience fostering but got a call 3 days later asking if we wanted to adopt, after considering we decided we would move forward, filled the application with the understanding if we applied we would keep the puppy, told our kids, sent the house video we sent PRIOR to fostering only to be told that evening by the "professional" that we didn't get approved because our house wasn't tidy so could we drop her off 45 mins away as she is going to a more suitable family! Excuse me?! Why on earth would you have fostered her to us then and why would you have allowed us even the option to adopt her? Apparently, our "yard wasn't even tidy", my partner was actively working on a garden bed at the start of May as we JUST purchased this home and there were things on the floor in my house which is normal with 2 young kids and we had been cooped up at home for 2 days due to illness.. When I sent the video, PRIOR to fostering, I had noted that we had been home all weekend as everyone was sick so asked to FaceTime so she could see the house currently but honestly there's more use hammering cottage cheese to the wall then getting through to this person. They then started going on about the dog not being in a pen, but the dog only had access to 3 rooms and we were with her 100% of the time but more importantly no one at any point told me they had to stay in a pen.. We used the pen to block off other rooms but it was useless as she would scale it and jump over risking serious harm if she were to fall... All that to say that the "professional" basically looked at our newly purchased house, judged hard and decided where we lived wasn't up to their standards which is completely snobbish, absurd and incredibly judgmental. The whole experience was extremely unorganised, cruel and not in the best interest of the dog and traumatic for my very young children. My 5 year old hid from us this morning as he was so upset she was leaving and didn't want to go to school. When people and other countries talk about "Karens", this organisation is the epitome of THAT, a bunch of stuck up women making decisions for dogs based on THEIR privileged lifestyles. Complete and utter nonsense. Sad for the dogs that have missed out on great homes as the houses weren't tidy enough ie. big or rich enough for these "professionals". Don't waste your time, go to another organisation or shelter when you are ready that won't leave you traumatised! Very much looking forward to the coco loco response I get here as if you review the other negative comments you can see how unhinged they are. Another 15 minutes of my life wasted writing this and thinking about these people, happy not to ever have to again! UPDATE: The response from "the professional" is completely disingenuous. When we had the painfully frustrating text back and forth about why the dog wasn't allowed to stay with us after her team pushed me to apply to adopt her, I sent her photos of my 2 young children (5, 2) with the dog so she knew very well what she was doing to them! I even explained how I had already told them she was ours and they were going to be so upset but my messages were met with complete disregard and OK Computer replies!! She often comments on people's negative reviews proclaiming that leaving reviews like this means more dogs in shelters will die. Well no, actually, it's her poor business management that results in this, not what the people who volunteer and offer their time, energy, money and home say about her practice... seriously, make it make sense!! As I have already said, look elsewhere, this place is terribly managed and full of bs don't take the risk of being let down and having to go through this nonsense especially if you have children! read more

Kinda surprised how many negative reviews there are. My experience with DWB was extremely positive. I initially applied for a different dog via email application and within a week someone had notified me that my household was not the right fit due to her shyness and hesitation. They welcomed me to check our the adoption fair and I happily obliged. From there, I met Hektar (who is now named Kona) and it was love at first sight. He is my little dude and I can't imagine life without him. He's 10 weeks now and is such a joy to be around. As a side note, puppies are usually straight adoptions. If you are the correct fit, you will foster the puppy until he/she is spay/neutered and the ownership transfers over to you. Young puppies are like sponges and require a lot of socialization and care and tend to bond with their caregivers. Imagine having to give up a pup after they imprinted themselves on you? Imagine the sadness or confusion they would feel if you somehow didn't come back? 8 weeks to 16 weeks is a very critical period for many pups... so it is important they have a solid foundation and a lot of positive reinforcement so they have a positive outlook growing up as adults. It may seem like I'm on my high horse, but I practiced as a vet technician for three years and volunteered at different shelters.. there is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that go into providing care for these pups.. especially as a non-profit organization. You are working with limited resources. You do your best. Sometimes things happen. But you have the best intentions and that's what matters. People sometimes change their minds when they realize how difficult it is to care for a puppy. If you are not ready financially, mentally, and emotionally to adopt or even foster a dog amidst a crisis. Don't bother. So many dogs are re-homed constantly and I can't imagine how it affects them emotionally. read more

I had been thinking about adopting a dog for a long while, and finally decided to start applying for adoption from various rescues in the area. I applied for one dog with Dogs Without Borders, and they contacted me within two days that I might be a match for another dog as well. After a brief interview with Eric, I could tell that they were committed to finding the right forever home for their dogs. While we found that I wasn't a match for either dog, Eric was willing to work with me and within a week, I had found a pup that grabbed my attention so much, I was in love.
