Today, that space was a volleyball tournament and there was a good crowd to observe. The parking lot has room for 25 or so vehicles, most of which were occupied today. There is a permanent structure with restrooms and water fountains. The parking lot is also a trailhead for the Carolina Thread Trail. First off, the dog park is amazing. Huge with lots of space, separated areas for small and large dogs, agility play equipment, benches and the like. You must have a city dog license and it seems that access to the park is using an RF tag to open the gate. Nearby, an ADA compliant playground, fitness equipment and a disc golf course. And that's just half the park. On the other side, a regular playground with a splashpag, picnic shelters, a massive baseball/softball complex and walking trails and a mountain bike trail. Despite the river views, it took a half hour or so to get to the spider lillies, which are apparently limited to one particular location. It was hard to see them from shore, made harder by rising waters (the festival the previous day was likely thrown off by rain). I got enough of a glimpse of them to understand where the name comes from. The overall aesthetic of the park offered remnants of a historic canal, and boating and picnicking opportunities. It was a pleasant space, but not at the top of ones I'd want to drive out to and pay for.

The Rocky Spider Lily's are only located in certain areas ( SC, GA, and AL). Hoping to see them in another state as well. Its all about timing, make sure you check the websites for a bloom updates. The park is well kept and bathrooms are clean, which is a plus. During the Lily Festival parking is limited, so pack your patience. You will get parking, so no worries. The cost is $6 for each adult, very reasonable considering. They have a store with maps for the walking trails, its approx 1mile roundtrip to see the Lily's. If you want to see them up close and personal you must rent a canoe prior to coming. The park doesnt rent boats, a outside company will take you on a tour. I actually enjoyed the nature trails. They have a nice platform for viewing the lily's. The lily's are absolutely breathtaking, I truly enjoyed my day at this park. The trails are fairly short and well taken care of. There are some food and artisan vendors at the park. Tip: dont touch the lily's if your on a boat, all parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested. Please do your own research beforehand. Lots of runners, walkers, bikers, people with their dogs. It was safe and clean with a few trash bins along the way (always appreciated when I have bags of dog waste to throw out!). Parking lot seemed large enough for a Sunday morning. Dogs enjoyed seeing a little frog for the first time in their lives. We will certainly be back! Finding shaded walking trails for the dogs can be difficult and this was nice. The porta potties could be smelled from quite a distance away so I would avoid those.

The park has a number of small tables that are perfect for a picnic or for setting up a chess board. The grass would be ideal for a picnic blanket. There is no playground or restroom facility. It is a proper rose garden and is named after Waxhaw's beloved history teacher, Dare Steele. Ms. Steele authored the play "Listen and Remember." The play was performed for many years at the Museum of the Waxhaws and was about the boyhood of President Andrew Jackson and the Waxhaws Colonial Settlement. Stop by. There is some street parking.
