My experience was horrid. Car smelled like weed, tires were horrendous so we slid everywhere and they gave us the smallest vehicle they had - my husband was very uncomfortable the entire trip. Our trip was a month ago - I make this point to say that I've been promised a $60 credit for an ENTIRE MONTH AND STILL HAVE YET TO RECEIVE IT! I called over a week ago regarding this issue, spent over 30 minutes on the phone and the agent tried to get me to hold yet again until I told her enough! I've made at least 5 calls to them regarding these issues, spent probably 2 hrs. on the phone overall and still have yet to receive the credit. I am furious and at this point, think I deserve a complete refund. I will NEVER use this company again and highly recommend that others refrain from using them as well. read more

Not everyone has the time to deal with this kind of issue and so I think the company counts on that fact. Long story short. We were given a Tesla. Fully charged Tesla broke down in the morning because of some ERROR. Tesla would't give support because I am not the owner of the car. Called Dollar and waited 4 hours for tow truck. Dollar charged us for the tow truck and did not provide us with a new car. We were left alone in the middle of the street without a car in upstate NY without help from Dollar. Took a Taxi to Albany to rent a new car since Dollar wouldn't give us a new one. At the end we paid for the total rental and the tow truck. Tried to dispute the charges with AMEX but were unsuccessful. Dollar says we have to contact them the location where we rented the car, but guess what??? The phone number given by Dollar doesn't work. End of story, never again. Horrible experience with renting an EV vehicle for one day. Not only was the vehicle given to me at 34% which is very low for a vehicle that requires hours of charging just to get to even 80% (2023 Kia Niro), I had significant issues with this vehicle to include the battery not being able to hold a charge. So for a one day rental I spent so many hours sitting anf charging the vehicle. On the day of the return I experienced an issue where it went from 10 miles of charge to 0 very quickly. While in route to a charge station it stopped. I was thankfully in a safe area. I was finally able to get to a charge station and had to charge it 4 hours just to get what was estimated 154 miles. That was supposed to be enough to get me to the location (80 miles away) for the return, but of course while in route the estimate dropped rapidly to saying I wouldn't have enough to get to my destination. I had to stop again to charge the vehicle for an hour. When I finally got to the location for the return (by the way all of this was documented via phone calls to customer service for time extension) I asked to speak to a manager about this horrible experience. Kevin, the operations manager came and he was so rude anf unprofessional, kept interrupting me and refused to offer anything except a 50$ coupon for next rental. I declined that as I will never rent with Dollar again. I asked that he at least take off the additional 4 hour charge for returning it late he refused. This was all recorded!!! you wouldn't believe how rude he was. Do yourself a favor and DO not rent from this company it isnt worth the headache and money and it is so hard to speak to anyone who can help you. Nightmare experience! read more

I received multiples bill in the mail for HUNDREDS of dollars on tolls that were less than all UNDER ONE DOLLAR. Do not use Dollar Car Rental, their toll billing is a serious fraudulent scam. I asked multiple customer service representatives about the toll fees and they told me several times that I would receive billings for the toll amounts, not the toll amount with fraudulent "administrative fees" literally 107 TIMES the actual toll amount. I rented a car in September. Four days for $167, prepaid. When I got there, they upgraded my car because they didn't have what I asked for. Great. Somehow, they also changed the return time on my agreement, and we didn't notice. When we returned it twenty minutes early (we thought) they charged us an additional $331 for being four hours late. That is more than $80 per hour. We had no choice but to pay it. Then FOUR MONTHS later we get a bill in the mail for an additional $60. This is the never ending nightmare. I have never received worse customer service than I did from Dollar at Albany Airport. I reserved an SUV and when I went to pick up my card was told all they had was a Nissan Versa. It was late I was tired and I took the car so I could get home. I tried repeatedly for over two hours to call Dollar and repeatedly received a busy signal. I tried their national 800 number and was told the only way to get this resolved was to go back to the airport (50+ miles away). I went to the airport location and it only got worse from there. I explained the situation and was told the Versa was their equivalent of an SUV. I explained that I needed and SUV that had more storage in the back. I was tole the only way to resolve this would be to stand in line (approximately 10 customers) and wait my turn, I told the attendant I was talkking to that it was apparent Dollar didn't give a rat's ass about customer service at which point he got mad at me and while shaking his finger in my face said the had been trying to help. Obviously Dollar doesn't care about employee traing and how to deal with dissatisfied customers. Never again will I rent from Dollar. One star is too high a rating for them. read more

I booked a car with Dollar when I purchased my United ticket though the United website. I was puzzled when, on arriving in Albany, there was no kiosk for Dollar along with the five or so other car rentals. It was only then that I found out that Dollar is not located at the airport but is ten minutes away and requires a shuttle. I called the shuttle at waited ten minutes for it to show up. The rest of the process was smooth. I was concerned about returning the car to the location and catching the shuttle at 6 am for my morning flight, but that went smoothly too. There are two issues that resulted in my low rating. The first is the off airport location. This is not made clear at the time of the reservation. I would expect both Dollar and United to have been transparent on that point. Second, the car rental location is understaffed. There is often only one person checking in customers and driving the shuttle. You can see how this could be an issue. However, the service was friendly and I had no issue with the car. read more

Called and they told me to just drive it anyway.. next solution was to send a tow truck and an Uber for me to go back and get another one an hr away.. spent 3 hrs on and off hold just to be transferred to someone else and get dropped.. spent the next 8 hrs trying to get an answer with 3 different calls and no call backs.. i was told replacement car would arrive at 9pm. 11pm I get a call saying they might have a car out to me in the next hour or so but wasn't sure..... absolutely worst company ever, do NOT use!!! read more

Horrible experience. I reserved a car a week in advanced to travel to Long Island for work. Even after booking on carrentals.com I called Dollar privately. I asked the guy about renter's age, he told me 18 and up was fine. Seeing I'm 23 most places have you pay an additional charge, which I was ok with. I also asked if there was a mileage charge, he told me it was unlimited mileage. Firstly, they need a new phone. You could barely understand what he was saying and it was so in and out I had to have him keep repeating. Now, we get to the day of my trip. My coworker and I arrived at the rental places about 6:05am after getting lost and having to call because their address is wrong. No one was in the building. We waiting about 15 minutes before someone came in to help up. He then took my information and license/credit card. After him playing on the computer for 10 minutes he said he'd be right back. Then comes back and says sorry I can't do this my system won't let me put your information in because you're not 25. So I told him about my previous phone call and he just said yeah I don't know. My friend, who's over 25, asked if she could use her information and she'll just drive. He said that was fine, however her debit card has her husbands name as the main name on it and he wouldn't take it. Needless to say, we were there until 7am, making us over an hour late for our trip. He did nothing to help the situation but stare at me and her like we were pictures on a wall. Around 12:30 I then called to speak with the manager, one: the phone rang for about 5 minutes before anyone picked it up. Two: I left my name and number because the "manager would be back on 15 minutes." It is now Thursday, this was Monday and I'm still waiting to hear back from the manager. I'll pay higher prices next time to deal with people who actually have customer service skills, and everyone is on the same page. read more

WARNING IF YOU RENTING HERE AND DRIVING INTO MASSACHUSETTS. The MassPike is now "cashless," that is, no toll booths. At Dollar, they charge $19/day to put in the transponder. Knowing that we were going to incur much lower tolls than that, we declined and the guy took it out of the vehicle. We *thought* we'd simply pay cash at the MassPike toll booths. But they no longer exist. Now, instead, cameras photograph your license plate and bill you accordingly (at a slightly higher rate than you would pay if you had your own transponder). Dollar DID NOT tell us how to handle this. MassPike billed Dollar. Dollar sent us the bill. It was $8.90 PLUS $45 IN FEES. $45 in fees!!!!!!!!! I called the toll-free number and the woman was no help at all. She simply said "sorry" and "maybe I could get that lowered, I will start an 'incident report' with your plea." Like she was doing me a huge favor and doubtful that I'd get any break here. The $15 per toll fee (we had three, obviously, over the course of our journey) IS in the contract, buried in the fine print. So I guess we are liable. THANK YOU, ALBANY DOLLAR for not mentioning that. SKUNKS. This is a bad system. Bad, bad, bad. Sneaky and unfair and f'ing expensive. We will NEVER rent from Dollar again. BEWARE. read more

This is the worst experience of my life for the car rental place. First time renting from Dollar Rent A Car absolutely my last time.. the car was delivered to me with various stray marks on it. They said it was because it was a brand new car and they just remove the plastic. The car already had five thousand miles on it they could have cleaned up the car. Upon return they said the car smells from cigarette smoke. We don't smoke. However there were a few people standing outside the car we were smoking. The car did not smell whatsoever. I told me they would charge me $350 so they could have it professionally cleaned. So I sprayed it with febreeze thinking that would appease a manager. He started yelling at me in front of his employees and several other customers that now the car has to be sent out to be completely cleaned because it had the odor of febreeze. Torn $89 car rental, it just cost me over $400 for something that never happens and I was completely humiliated. I will never do business with this company again read more

Horrible experience!!! Fair warning all those who rent from Dollar Rent A Car in Albany. I rented a SUV a few months ago, as the days were approaching to be on my flight I called to make sure the shuttle was available to pick up at the airport. They stated not to worry because the shuttle knows the last flight out and would wait even if it was delayed. That's exactly what happened...our flight was delayed in Chicago for half an hour so I called the 866# to advise them of the delay and they stated they were notating it and to use the courtesy phone at the airport for pick up. I did just that only to be hung up on twice. So I called, yet again, the 866# and they said they would call. After a few minutes on hold the person said the shuttle would return within 15 min. They never showed so I called, yup again, and this time asked for the manager, she gets on the phone and proceeds to tell me they left for the night and that there was no record listed on their computers that I called. I lost it!! In the meantime, it's 2 in the morning, taxes are gone airport is closing and I'm stranded in an area I'm not familiar only to be told by the supervisor to be at the rental office by 530am to pick up the car otherwise they wouldn't guarantee the car...WHAT!!@!!...So basically I'm screwed! I went through two toll booths while I had the car - ones where you cannot pay at the booth but your car is billed. The tolls were $6 and $5 for a total of $11. I did not fly into the airport to book my car, I drove from home to pick it up and looked everything up thoroughly before going to pick the car up. I was a bit hesitant bc the rate I was getting was the best I found on our van (almost too good to be true) and reading other reviews I was afraid what I got myself into. I booked the reservation at least 3 weeks in advanced and called and confirmed a week before our trip and everything was set. Got there and even though a shuttle just arrived from the airport I was in and out within 15 min. We had a brand new van with 1100miles, even hit some snow and on the way home and the tires were brand new and did great. Very friendly. Dropped off with no issues. If you read all their policies about booking ahead of time then you should have no issues. Highly recommended and will rent from here again! read more

Everyone considering renting from this SCAM of a business should RUN in another direction. They have shady business practices, the horrible reviews left from everyone else say it all. I was trying to go the cheap route and I am now paying for it. I used a debit card to hold a reservation, got to airport and my friend paid wit her card. They told me the payment would be held for 7-10 days, 11 days later, they are giving me the run around. Every time I asked to speak with supervisor or manager, they said no one was available. What has happened here is they double dipped, never held the reservation, actually stole my money and continued to tell me they didn't. I will be reporting this business to the better business bureau. When all is said and done, the money isn't the biggest issue, it's principle. I booked a car through Southwest Airlines website. Our flight was delayed 5 hours (whole other story) and so we had to wait over an hour to get our rental car. The amount of taxes, fees, etc bounced the price up 100% the amount I had contracted for. In addition, they asked me whether I wanted to pay $100 for an ezpass for toll roads. I opted to pay the tolls directly. Turns out, there was one toll area that only operates on ezpass (no booths to pay personally), and I was sent notice that I owed $2. PLUS $30 IN ADMINISTRATIVE FEES!!! In other words, they charged $15 per toll that they have to notify the customer about. Called and told it was all in contract, blah, blah. I stated it was poor business practice to charge a person to use a toll road when that is what the state is doing. The woman I spoke with told me that I had the responsibility to figure out alternate roads if I didn't want to take the toll. I told her it wasn't the toll cost I was disputing, it was Dollar's charges!!! She said I didn't have to take the toll and then wouldn't get charged by Dollar, or I could've opted to buy the ezpass for $100 at rental time. For purposes of people renting cars, especially at airports, they are likely from out of town and would therefore not know which roads are toll, etc. EXTREMELY ridiculous contract terms and I will never use Dollar again! read more

Price was good so went with Dollar. They are offsite from the Airport. I did not receive any notice from Dollar that you need to call for their shuttle bus, however we lucked out and happened to flag it down as it went by in front of Baggage Claim. (driver said there was a phone on the wall in baggage claim to call for pick up and was surprised we did not get a notice from Dollar). Check in was slow, even though we were the only ones there. Car was in good condition, no problems. Car return however was a nightmare. It was raining, there is no outside cover to wait for the shuttle or put your bags. There was a mob of people returning cars and picking up. There was no one outside directing car return so people just parked hodge podge all over the place. The staff was very, very, very, slow in processing people. In my opinion the problem is lack of staff to handle the volume of persons that use the facility. The staff has one speed, slow. Won't use them again. I the past I have used the rent a car companies with a booth in the airport and cars in the adjacent parking and it went very smoothly. Saving a few bucks by using this offsite facility is not worth the hassle. read more

I feel sorry for the guys that work here, they were all pleasant to deal with, but the company they work for is criminal. Never prepay!!! Prepaying on their website creates the impression that you get a better deal if you pay in advance. This is not the case! Once you pay, you are then told you owe a balance at the counter when you pick up the car. I arrived to the pick up the car and I realized it wouldn't be big enough (my fault). I then went inside and immediately canceled my reservation, and the guys at the counter said no problem, and it wouldn't have been a problem if I didn't prepay! I told them I prepaid and they all rolled their eyes at each other which told me I was in big trouble. Two weeks later Dollar and their partners Cartrawler still owe me $252.45. Yes Cartrawler!! Thats the name of the company in Dublin Ireland that you have to hound endlessly to get reimbursed, and I haven't been paid back yet!! read more

Do not rent here. My husband was flying into Albany airport and arriving at 1am. They offer anytime of day to make your reservation online to pick up a car, and a representative told me on the phone that I could reserve him a car for his 1am arrival. When he arrived, no shuttle was at the airport for him. I called a representative (because there is no direct number to the Albany location only an 866 number) to ask them what to do, they were not helpful and argued with me on the phone telling me I needed to call 30 minutes before he arrived to make sure a shuttle was there and they are now closed. NO WHERE in my reservation confirmation did it state I had to call 30 minutes before his arrival ! And what if I was with him, how could either of us have called in flight?? The representative then yelled at me to go to Hertz. How can a company allow people to make reservations for 1am and then not be there for them at the time of their reservation??? Luckily Hertz was open at the airport and he was able to get a vehicle and Hertz honored the price that Dollar had quoted him. But Dollar Car Rental is a joke. Poor customer service, not helpful, and do not care if they leave people stranded that have made reservations with their company. NEVER will I do business with them again. read more
