So, here's my story, I used a CC to rent and insure a Dollar rental car. (Prices approximate) through Expedia, I might add. Cost $490.23 for the car and $140 for insuring said car...after the fact....meaning I used the same card for the insurance, but not the same day. We got to the front desk, told them I'd paid already, and they told me they needed to hold $200 plus I added $71 fuel cost which is $271. I proceeded to give my wife's credit card for the hold and the fuel. When the receipt was presented to me, there was a charge of $985, needless to say after seeing the receipt, I had to change my drawers. Now, long story, short, we worried through our whole trip about that charge, because it was a new credit card and we had no idea that that was going to be the charge on the card. And I was imagining all sorts of difficulty in trying to get that money reversed. Returning the car was a piece of cake. All that was needed was to leave the keys on the dash and walk away, which is pretty cool in my book. But still, I wondered or I should say, my wife and I wondered what the disposition would be of the final bill, and we had to wait a bit to see what would happen. (Suggestion: this is a pay at the Desk rental car company, that is why there was the large charge on the second credit card, however, I'm glad I reserved it early, they seem to have had a plethora of cars there.) Will we didn't receive a final bill but a few days later my wife and I were elated when that $985 had been returned on her new credit card, so we did indeed only pay the $630 or $40 needed which I'd already paid. So, other than worrying about that major expense on one card we were relieved to see the money returned, back on the Second credit card!!! So I'd like to say kudos to Expedia and to Dollar Rent-A-Car for a somewhat nervous but happy Experience, even though it was slightly stressful. If we had had foreknowledge of that big expense being returned, we likely would've not stressed so much, that said I would recommend dollar, they treated us fairly, and pretty good!!! read more

**November 2025: Weekend After & Morning Visit** I should have read these reviews before reserving the rental. Long story short, this was the worst car rental experience I have ever had. The rental was paid in full and the customer service rep insisted that that was an estimate. The car we were given was not what we signed up for and later we saw that we were charged extra for it. They also charged some additional things that we did not agree to. Have you ever seen that Seinfeld episode? The one where Jerry says: "You see, you know how to *take* the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them." Yeah, I was worried I'd have a Seinfeld situation on my hands, but everything worked out okay. While there've been some relatively minor, annoying hiccups, Dollar has become my go-to car rental agency in Boston. Let me introduce the elephants (really more like flies... annoying but harmless) in the room: the hiccups and how they were resolved. #1 - I was charged for a toll plus administrative fees. I called the number to dispute, stating I was nowhere near the tunnel at the time. The process was relatively painless and fast, and the money was returned. #2 - After making my reservation, I lost my confirmation email (my mistake). I called, and the representative said she would resend it. It didn't come, so I called back in a few days. I was then informed that they are unable to resend, but that the reservation was confirmed. Closer to the pickup time, reminder and "get ready!" emails started coming, so, no issues there. #3 - This was that almost-Seinfeld situation. The pickup time was scheduled for noon. As I made my way off the plane and toward the rental car center, it was already past 12:30, and my car was still showing as being unavailable. After what seemed like a 15-minute wait for a counter representative, I was informed the car was there, and he went through some final things to put it all together. In getting everything squared away, he asked: "Do you want full protection, or basic?" to which I responded: "None!" Not a negative, just an effective sales tactic to be aware of. He gave me a document, and I proceeded to my car in the garage. I looked and couldn't find the spot it should have been in. I went to the kiosk in the parking structure and was offered a choice of two vehicles, which would have been an upgrade if selected on the app, at no additional cost! The extra 30-45 minutes to figure everything out rather than get in the car and go was frustrating, but the unexpected, free upgrade made up for it. Other than hiccups, the experiences have been great! The cars have been as close to new as can reasonably be expected, no more than two years old. Further, while they may not have all the bells and whistles, they all had Apple CarPlay (one Nissan required a wire, others were wireless), and comprehensive driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. I also greatly appreciate that the cars were clean and seemed to be well-maintained, though with how new they were, not a whole lot of maintenance was due yet. Other than hiccup #3, picking the cars up and dropping them off has been a breeze. To pick up, get in and go. To drop off, park in the designated spot and leave. That's it - piece of cake! Finally, there are the prices. While I always check an aggregator to be safe, Dollar is consistently among the cheaper options out there, in some cases, even compared to Turo... and the convenience is unbeatable! Final Verdict: Dollar has established itself as a reliable, very affordable company with whom I happily have, and will continue to do business. Yes, when you have a budget rental car company with a fleet this size, things may occasionally go a little sideways. Still, all issues were resolved with minimal hassle and frayed nerves. read more

There is a seriously aggressive upselling technique carried out by the people on the desk. So much so that the man i dealt with refused to communicate with me any longer as i did not want his added insurance. He initially added it to my bill without my consent and when i asked him to remove it he became nasty. It is 3 weeks after my rental and i still have the hold amount still pending on my credit card which i was advised would be $200 but infact its $500. I would never rent from here again. Don't bother, seriously, they are TERRIBLE! Reserved my car online, came to the booth and the rep said the price was wrong, and didn't have to honor the deal I reserved online (had snap shots on my phone, reservation number, and everything). Deal went from about $400 (that they couldn't honor), to now which was over $2000...not even kidding. I really don't know how the airport allows this place to stay here. How has no one sued this place out of business? Dollar Car and Thrifty are the most terrible businesses I've ever had to deal with in my life. Because of the reviews, I really didn't have any expectation that renting a car from Dollar Rental would go smoothly, but it did. It was a super cheap price, so I knew there would be a ton of "add-ons" suggested, but I didn't take them except the EZ Pass for tolls. I gave it 4 stars because the online check-in said "skip the line", but it then said there were no cars available. If I was traveling with little kids, this would be annoying in terms of planning, but today I was flying solo. So I simply went to the counter to check-in. Easy fix. Got a car right away, maybe a couple minute wait, and I was on my way. I haven't got the final bill, I forgot to pull out the EZ Pass when I went through the tolls, so I'll probably get charged for that mistake. But all in all, this experience was like most rental car places. So 4 stars, good experience, will use them again. read more

Renting over 4th of July weekend is always going to be tough (does it have to be?). Long line to check in and get the car. There is a QR code but several customers including me experienced errors at the final check-in screen. Once we get through check-in, we walk over to the garage to get the car. And are met with everyone we were in line with - still waiting for their cars! There were about 20 families in front of us and it looked to be another hour waiting, sitting on a parking garage floor, or suitcase... This was bad. The staff in the booth looked exasperated and not sure why it was taking so long to get cars up front. (Under staffed?) Somehow, miraculously, I got my car before others (sorry folks!) The car did have scratches on it and no one reviewed it with me beforehand so I took pictures. MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT (after all that) was that I wanted to change my rental location and day and other than emergency service I could not get through to any customer service person. Double challenge because I made my reservation through AAA and the agent their misspelled my name - so it was impossible to log on website/mobile/etc. read more

All the abysmal Yelp reviews beat me to it: This place is horrendous. STAY CLEAR September 19, 2024 --The gate agent for Dollar actually told me, among other things, to "f*ck off." When I reported it to the manager, who apologized but said he was too busy to do anything about it, the agent yelled "This guy's a weirdo" twice to other customers. I then left concerned for me and my wife's safety. The line to leave through the gate was moving slowly, slower than I had ever experienced leaving a car rental garage. When we pulled up this employee, who the manager later identified as "S__" seemed to not know what he was doing and was agitated. He asked me for the mileage of the car. It was 4,904 miles. Later, he asked me for the mileage again and this being the third time I said it slowly. He then told me I did not have to be so disrespectful. I was not disrespectful. He told me I needed to learn how to talk to people. I hardly said a word to the man. He left the booth and someone, I believe it was the manager, came to help him. Later S was speaking aloud to himself about people treating him with respect and learning how to treat people. I hardly said anything to this man. I've never in my life had such things said to me by an employee of any business -- and completely unprovoked as well. I wonder if Dollar's other employees are concerned for their safety as well with this troubled man. If I was his manager I would view him as a liability. I remained calm in the face of his insults. Not everyone would have. When I approached the manager and first told him of this his reply was he could not offer me credit as he did not know what happened. I said I was not there to get credit, I was reporting what happened. I also had first told another agent working on the lot. She and the manager reacted as if this was not the first time S had behaved this way. Needless to say Dollar has lost a customer. Not to mention the charges they added to my rental. BEWARE!!! We prepaid for our car through Priceline with fees and taxes to be paid on arrival. We were charged for many extras, such as the deluxe waiver for loss and damage (which we verbally declined), tolls (which I'm pretty sure we did not incur) and other fees which we did not approve and were not explained to us, but the bill wasn't emailed to us until after we left. Extra charges amounted to several hundred dollars and more than doubled the cost we were quoted on Priceline. When we tried to call to discuss the charges, we found there is NO phone number for customer service. You have to write a letter and wait up to 5 days for a reply. They simply responded that we had approved the extra charges. There seems to be no recourse. This is a scam. We are done with Dollar. Take this as a warning to everyone considering using Dollar. read more

These guys are scammers.I rented an SUV from Logan airport prepaid 82 dollars for a two day rental.The counter person scammed us by telling me that the SUV did not have AWD .We agreed to upgrade as we were concerned about an upcoming snow storm .That put the bill to 220 dollars but when we returned the car they billed me for 358 dollars.I researched the original car that I had booked and it has a built in AWD.Basically we got Lied to and the whole experience was just very bad . Rented on a Friday afternoon in October. Dollar counter closed, sign directed us to Thrifty counter. No Thrifty staff present but two staff in Hertz uniforms were assisting. One then left never to be seen again. We waited 1 hour and 20 minutes. By the time we left the queue was three times as long. No other company had queues as long (including Hertz). Avoid at all cost. The sole member of staff was at least polite and positive but too little, too late. And he mistakenly(?) advised our EZ pass transponder wouldn't work in Mass. Apparently I'm reading reviews a day late, but it is true they misrepresent the "toll" EZ Pass option. Guy asked me if I needed, told me it was only $12.49 and if I didn't take the option I'd pay at min $9.99 per toll. When i arrived home I found a $50 toll charge added to my bill. Oh my where do I begin. I should of checked yelp before I rented. So we went to Boston and needed a car for a few days to travel to Newport. We had a full size car. We specifically needed the trunk space for excessive luggage. We get to the lot and there's NO cars. People had been waiting 2+ hours. Lines were excessively long. I wasn't too concerned since I knew I had rented a car for 9am and filled out my paperwork ahead of time so I could bypass the lines. Well nope. They were understaffed. Erik was scrambling to get people checked in, give keys out, then man the exit gate. I waited in the line outside to ask about dollar express. He said he would help me get started. People didn't look happy that I bypassed the line inside but that wasn't my concern. Well after we got checked in it took a good chunk of time to get "a car". A compact Jeep/suv pulled up and Erik said to take that car. Well that's not the one I wanted. He said he doesn't know how long it will be before a full size car comes in. My husband said we didn't have time to wait since we had to be in Newport and was already late from waiting for the car rental. So we anxiously get in and take off. We exit the airport. We look down and notice there's no gas. Then we notice the car smells and is pretty dirty. I called dollar rental and they said to "file a claim". Which I did. Well when we pulled over to get gas we noticed a water bottle with what appeared to be urine in it. That's why the car smelled. Upon turning in the car we got charged for gas. However it said to turn the car in as you received it. Well we got it with no gas but returned it with half a tank. They charged us $67. I again tried calling dollar. Same answer "file a claim". Then a couple days later we received a survey. Filled it out and they said someone would contact me within 72 hours. I've received nothing. No call. No email. No follow up. Yes it was our fault for not checking the gas and looking to see if the car was clean but we had been waiting a long time and there were no cars available. So we quickly took what was available but this is unacceptable and unprofessional. Will never use them ever again. Way to spoil a vacation. read more

The state of Massachusetts apparently did away with all of their toll booths, and all tolling is done electronically. From what we were told by Dollar, there is no way to exit the airport without having to pay a toll. You could rent a toll pass device from the car rental company; however, since we were literally just picking up the car and heading out of the state, we didn't want to pay a daily rental fee. The only other option was to essentially be billed a $10 fee + the cost of the toll. I think this would apply per toll, but we planned to avoid as many as possible. We thought we'd at least have two fees, one for leaving the airport and one for returning, but we were only ever billed for one. We went to actually get our car after leaving the main counter, and an older attendant told us to go pick whatever compact car we wanted, the keys were in the car, and just head towards the exit when we were done. We were so perplexed. Do we just drive off with a car? How do they know which one we took? Is no one going to make note of any dents or scratches? The guy wasn't particularly helpful, so we picked out a Ford Fiesta and headed towards the exit. Turns out there was an exit gate with an attendant who collected our rental details before we headed out. Sheesh, that whole process could have been done a lot more clearly. read more

There were about 10x more people in the thrifty line and only 2 employees giving out cars. When presented with choices of cars to rent, I skipped the first two which were electric. I selected the "manager's choice", which was a picture of a car covered with a tarp. Unfortunately, this also turned out to be an electric car, a Polestar. Because I am an old fart, I have a conflicted relationship with technology. And I don't like cars making decisions for me like automatically tilting my exterior mirrors down when I back up. Numerous other complaints that are probably irrelevant to younger people. However, my biggest complaint cuts across the entire car rental industry. And that is America' newest religion, Profit Theology. By that I mean adding over $100 of extra charges on top of the rental fee. So disgusting that it outweighs my complaints about the lack of engagement by Dollar Rent-A-Car employees. If you've got extra time at Boston Logan airport get a rental car from Dollar or Thrifty. I've been in line for 60 minutes and still have 12 people in front of me. They said more staff was coming in to help at 2:30 but failed to say that 2 of the people current working were going to be leaving. So it's a wash as far as more help. I flew from Florida on 8/16/25 to drop off my child at college. The car that I rented was for one day, returning it on 8/17/25, as I had no reason to staying there any longer. Dollar rental decided to charge me for 2 days rental and a late return fee. The first CSR after telling him that I only rented the car for one day and to review the cameras they will see when I enter the building. I even t him that I had a flight to catch on 8/17/25, he told me I need to provide evidence that I return the car on 8/17/25. The service is slow, their CSR are very unpleasant to deal with, they over charge and add additional charges to your agreement, dirty cars, I can go on. To the consumer's please review your receipt before leaving the premises to avoid this type of problems. I will not rent from them again, I will give them a bad review every chance I get and I will let anyone and everyone know what a messy and disloyal company this is. read more

Terrible. The lines to get a rental were massive with few workers there to handle the line. After getting through the initial cue that wait outside for a car was 1-2 hours. One woman said she had been waiting 4 hours in the parking lot to get a car. I was told I could go inside to get a full refund as I was already missing an event due to the extremely slow service. Awful. Just awful. Pathetic customer service. It took about two hours from the time I got in line until I left with the car. Only one person working the counter (for both Thrifty AND Dollar), then finally a couple more employees came. They were all moving so slow though like it didn't matter there was a line and that people have waited for 1.5 hours. No compensation for those hours of renting. There were still enough spaces for more to help and the manager was there, but not at the counter. I got to the counter and there was no acknowledgment of the time I waited. No real explanation of the options for tolls, just if I want it. I was told the daily coverage for damage was $33/day and it was actually $35/day. I was charged for daily upgrade and did NOT get an upgrade. I was eager to get out of there that I didn't look at price details. When I finally did and have tried to address the issues, there's been ZERO responses. Back to the experience of getting the car... Directions given to get to the spot to pick up the car wasn't very clear. I ended up walking around the parking garage for about 10 min before I finally saw the booth. I got to the booth and the worker didn't know if there were any more compact cars. (Had I known I was being charged for an upgrade, I would have sprung for that.) We got to the car. It was dirty (outside) and at times I got a whiff of cigarette smoke. It did not look to be truly cared for at all. I've rented from Dollar multiple times. However this time is going to be the last. Especially because they aren't willing to acknowledge what happened or apologize or do anything to make it right. Do yourself a favor and don't rent from here. I never expect a good experience renting a car at the airport, but Dollar at Logan took the prize for the absolute worst! I reserved the car through Expedia (never repeat that mistake), paid for it upfront. When I got to the Dollar rental desk at Logan, it was shut down with a sign that point to the Thrifty line that had 30+ exhausted people that waited for hours to get their car after a long flight, crying children, angry travelers, absolute mess! I spent over an hour in the line that barely moved an inch, then I overheard a conversation with an employee that mentioned that they simply don't have enough cars at this location. I ended up cancelling the reservation and taking a bus to the city. Don't buy into their promotional prices, they mean nothing -- you will spend hours waiting and still remain without a car in the end. read more

Rented via Priceline and paid in full. When we arrived at Dollar, they charged me again for the rental - which we caught right away. Then, they had to charge us over $625 for "incidentals" including the EZ-Pass and fuel, we requested. As we went to get the car, we found several additional charges for things we specifically said we didn't need. They were removed but they didn't reimburse anything, stating it was a charge for "incidentals." When re returned the car, we got a receipt stating the total cost (from the incidentals money) was about $125, but they charged the full $625 AFTER sending us the invoice, when they could have charged us the $125. No welcome, no smiles, all business in the Boston Logan Airport Dollar Car Rental. There were certainly other issues as well. Never again will we use Dollar or any other car rental company owned by their parent company. read more

I had no problem with my one-day rental, a deal I picked up and cheapened through Autoslash. Pick up was easy as I am a Dollar Express member. So I just went right past the counter and out to the garage where I gave the gent in the booth my name. He reminded me that I had reserved an Economy but I was more than welcome to take anything in the Full Size row. Bonus! A choice of a dozen or so cars, I passed by the ones with Florida and California license plates, settling on a brown Kia Optima with Pennsylvania tags. The closest I could find to Massachusetts on the lot. Other than the 38000 miles on the clock, the car was clean and drove well. It got reasonable 31 miles to the gallon for 333 miles of mostly highway driving at 75 to 80 mph. Returning was easy enough with well posted signs and a clerk who was polite and helpful. Only use Dollar if you want to pay an unexpected several hundred dollars over what they tell you. I was told I would only need to pay $60 at the counter after prepaying $130 for my rental.
