I'm traveling on a budget, why I chose Dollar Rental. I checked in at the Palm Springs airport helped by Heather. She was nice but the debit card policy is ridiculous. See the attached photo. My card was charged twice $534 and I was subject to a soft credit check! No where during the booking and mobile checking was this stated. So many times I got emails and checked my reservation but no where was this clearly stated or even mentioned. The company needs to be transparent about their debit card policies and credit checks! For the double charge/hold, I called the company a day later as Heather had stated the wrong charge/hold should disappeared after an hour. The agent I spoke to stated I was lied to and the hold takes 72hrs to disappear. I'm on vacation and now I'm $1068 short which has ruined my plans. Please don't make the same mistake I did thinking "this stuff would never happen to me" No matter how prepared, Dollar Rental ruined my vacation plans. I should have just payed the cancellation fees the moment I was informed of their policy. Total regret. Save yourself the headache and anger and go with the bigger and better known companies like Enterprise. Update after a two day use: Upon return of the vehicle I was charged the deposit for being accused of smoking in the vehicle. I've never smoked in my life. I trusted this company did their inspections and recorded it before renting the vehicle to another patron. I kept getting questioned why I didn't call it in when I first got the vehicle. It was obvious to me they tried to clean car and attempted to get rid of the smell but it wasn't going anywhere. Due to the frustrating experience with Heather I didn't want to deal with them again. I was told the wait for a car would be "a couple of hours", "two hours", and/or "about an hour and a half". I wouldn't mind waiting this indeterminate amount of time if I hadn't paid them to have a car ready for me. What's the point of having an online reservation system if you're just going to half-ass it on the day? I do feel bad for the desk employees who do seem to be working hard, but damn... what a mess. We had to rent a car in an emergency-we were supposed to fly but my husband would not have.been able to make it through the flight- he had a SEVERE case of the flu. When we got into the vehicle is smelled of smoke but my husband was so sick we just took off to our destination. when returning the car we were asked if we smoked in it and told them we did not- we are both non smokers. Warning to people renting from Dollar/Thrifty! Normally a consumer would rate the service of a company AFTER they have receive it. I'm going online to let others know that it's not possible with Dollar Car Rental because they have prohibited us from doing so before we have a chance to follow through on our agreement. For over a month, we've had a reservation for a minivan for an upcoming trip. Today we received an email from Dollar stating they can't guarantee the vehicle with almost 30 days left before we were scheduled to arrive ("experiencing challenges with vehicle availability..."). This incident, sadly but in a sarcastic and humorous manner, reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry attempted to make a car reservation. Now I should say that Dollar's email was very well worded (offering a voucher or to cancel the reservation and "take the chance a similar car is available upon arrival) and the verbiage almost sounds like they are offering solutions! Giving way to these non-customer centric policies only exacerbates the problem. Not having a guarantee of the car we reserved and taking a chance on one being available upon arrival is NOT a solution! An actual solution would be for Dollar to upgrade us to a Ford Expedition or Chevrolet Suburban for the guaranteed rate we agreed to. But I guess Dollar Car Rental is NOT in the business of "customer service" like I presumed. Not wanting to be at the mercy of a rental company, we have since been forced to make other arrangements with another rental agency that will guarantee us a vehicle. So when we returned the van we had not 1 representative we had 2 come and check with a white glove the vehicle for damage and smoke. It was accepted and driven off by the representative. Now 5 days later email received stating there was damage to the vehicle, we advised that it was not damaged when we had it so move on please. Now a month later received a call asking what we are going to do about the damage again it was expressed that it was accepted by the representatives and there was insurance to cover if we had indeed been responsible for the damage but we were not. My belief is the representative that drove it away damaged it and does not want to step up and take accountability for his/her actions. Without warning, we were shifted online to something we later learned is called "CarTrawler," evidently a foreign partner of Dollar, answering phone as Dollar, but not Dollar -- as Dollar was quick to tell us when we called up to find out about our car and why this strange company had billed us over $280 on AMEX for no apparent reason. "CarTrawler" wants your "confirmation number" but we received no such number online, by phone, or by email, nor anything else to our email address, from Dollar or CarTrawler. Through Dollar we finally reached CarTrawler, which said it would be days (some people say weeks) to get a refund on the deposit. There are many similar complaints and extremely negative reviews on this company elsewhere. This is not an issue relating to any particular physical location but to online car reservations and charges. We have cancelled the reservation ASAP and registered a complaint with AMEX. read more

They gave me a powder blue Mercury Grand Marquis. Welcome to Palm Springs! Dollar was kind enough to dispatch a tug to nudge me out into the street. Plus, I managed not to hit any bridge towers. After assessing my situation, I figured the only proper solution was to blare gangsta rock while I blazed down the 10 on my way to La Quinta. It just felt right. The GPS they gave me worked maybe half the time, which was annoying. Mercury and I agree on at least one thing: the meaning of "max AC." I don't push that button lightly, and when I do push it, I mean business. So does Mercury. You could keep a side of beef in the backseat. Nothing says "Fall-of-the-Roman-Empire-esque decadence" like stepping out of a 50-degree car into 98-degree heat. One other nice thing: when you drive a powder blue Mercury Grand Marquis, people get the fug out of your way. At one point, I found myself turning left from the innermost of two left turn lanes, and realized I needed to turn right into a parking lot about 100 feet away from the intersection. I smacked the turn signal from left to right, jumped on the gas, and cut across 5 lanes of traffic. Not a car in the way, and not a horn in hearing range. Plus, you could drive over a fallen redwood with this thing and not feel it. When I took two friends back to the airport with me, the trunk laughed at our luggage. "You ever parked your bike in an airplane hanger?" it asked. "You ever thrown a toothpick into a volcano?" it queried. "You ever throw a hot dog down a hotel hallway?" it double-entendred. I don't take a lot of smack from car trunks, so at that point I just stuffed the last bag in sideways and slammed the lid. All for $20/day! read more

A very bad way to start your vacation....I rented through Rentcars.com with firm price for a dollar car in Palm Springs. Even though I gave them a voucher stating dates and price the gal at the counter came up with different prices for the 678 price on the voucher. First she tries to upsell the usual stuff...upgrade your vehicle etc. She tells me there are no cars in the category I rented and that it will be 1300 dollars instead. After arguing the price became 738.... the reason she says because all the taxes are not stated on voucher. Then I call manager... I tell him the voucher says it includes all taxes. When I dropped off the car, I was again told the total fee was $91. I got charged on my credit card both the $42 and $91, for a total of $133 for one day. I called customer service and spoke with a snotty representative, Luanne, who babbled in corporate speak, which got me nowhere, but gave her the opportunity to insult me a few times.
