On my most recent visit, today Friday 8 December 2023, I found the shelves well stocked and ready for the 2023 Christmas season. Looking for some gift items, I was reminded of how much fun it is just to look and see what is on the shelves. The different sections were easy to navigate and I enjoyed perusing the offerings. I got a seasonal reindeer 3 kitchen towel set as well as Reese's pieces themed socks for less than $20.00 with tax. Immediately what sticks out to me about Deseret is how clean and well kept up it is. Goodwill especially is notorious for this where at many of them it seems like a gust of wind blew through the aisles and things are scattered all over the place and picked over. To be fair certain sections such as the toys and the otherwise 'brick-a-brack' sections do look like this here and other places, but at least it looks like here at Deseret they have people that come and try to neaten it up or zone it. Another thing about Deseret that's unique and I like is with the piles of shirts I'm sure they get, they try to color code them and hang them so if you're looking for that certain color you can simple walk over and sift through shades of yellow or green t-shirts for example as they're hung up and separated from the rest of the assorted t-shirts. The store seems to be decently staffed and seems evident by how clean it generally is here. From what I understand they hire people of less means or recently released offenders for work which is nice. My company actually has one of our clients volunteer here so I appreciate them for that. The one flaw I've found here is the shoe section is not well presented. You have to "eyeball" the shoes for size as there isn't a tag or other easily identifier of size on them. They also seem to pretty much be mixed - womens, mens, baby, child... it could use improvement. I've visited Deseret a few times and although I've yet to score any nice finds here, I do enjoy the ease of browsing here and the prices are surprisingly decent considered the spike in many thrift stores inventory in favor of profits. I have driven by this place so many time, but never dropped in. Today, I decided to pop-in. Service is great, the people there want to help and everyone seems to have a smile on their face. Selection, feels pretty good. I came early morning, after dropping off the kiddo at school. I could tell there were regulars, the early bird pickers who know what to look for. A bunch of the customers, somehow knew each other's names and yeah... I guess I was the stranger shopper today. Anyway, the prices aren't bad, I picked up a Timbuk2 bag, in pretty good condition for $3 bucks, and a couple blu-rays, $2 bucks each. Honestly, pretty good deals. I only buy things that I would use, so I don't know what resell values of things are, but feels like if you came here enough, you would find some good deals. So there, it's not scary, and if you don't care about the religion of the people who run the place, this should be on your list of thrift stores to visit.

The staff at this location are hard working, keeping the isles and racks neat, and I hard saying this but it doesn't look like Ross. The toy area is straightened and you don't see shoes everywhere on the ground and feel like you're at a picked over estate sale. I miss the Maxx downtown and the two levels. Great job, and the cashiers are always super friendly and keep the line moving for efficiency. The snacks by the register get me every time. Watch out. They're a good deal.

She then tells me it's against the law to not have a photo ID on me (which is false) and goes into how you never know with how things are nowadays. That left me feeling very uncomfortable, icky and no longer willing to shop at this TJ Maxx.

Depending on what one was looking for, some of the offerings were picked over and some were full. A worker was filling balloons (some Mother's Day related) later as I was waiting in line. I was looking for a few sweet treats for my mom as well as a Mother's Day card and a birthday card for her. The cards were varied in tone and style and I found one for each occasion that I decided to go with. For sweet treats, I found a couple of items rhyming with the tastes my mom likes. Check out had a longer line and one register was open. While waiting a second register opened up, then the first one started having problems. Even with the few registers and number of customers, the line moved quick and the wait was not too long.

It's a very large store, but it feels very DIY/shabby inside. Items haphazardly thrown up on found shelving, not retail shelving, or anything like that. Kind of like a vintage mall booth. The employees I interacted with were meh. Not outright rude, but not very friendly either. One of them rushed over to me from across the store to admonish me for "stepping over that line" between items for sale and items not-ready for sale. I had not touched one item in the area at all. It was weird. I didn't even realize that area was for processing, because my brain just goes into "look at everything" mode when I'm thrifting, and in 99.9% of thrift stores, the actual selling floor is not used for processing. They weren't mean about it, just had a very elevated sense of urgency that I not touch anything in that area. I apologized and they seemed to back off a little. Like I said, it was weird. I did find a couple glass decor items to purchase and their prices seemed fair. I didn't look at clothes, but shoes and bags were slim pickings the day I was in there. I might check it out again in the future, but there was nothing about it that made me feel like I wanted to come back. Kind of a bummer. Maybe after they've been open longer, they might get more of a sense of organization. In the mean time, I will continue to shop Deseret and Bella's Voice.

Today I picked up a case of monster energy drinks which is 24 for $38 and now I don't have to pay the ridiculous price of 3.79 each. There are supplies even for barista stands things like cups and stirrers and coffee syrups and coffee beans and the like. A good supply of essential professional cooking cookware like inserts, whips and utensils and some really good knives. For the bar there are dozens of different Frozen appetizers that patrons love like deep fried shrimp, chicken strips, zucchini, even pickles breaded, onion rings and other things like burritos, chicken strips and the like. They have a whole walk-in dairy refrigerator it's bigger than my bedroom which is quite nice when you need a lot of supplies and don't like the crowns of the supermarkets. No you do not need to be a member or have a special sign or club membership to shop here and no there is no fee for that it's just like a regular supermarket only with a different kind of display setup. In fact there is no display setup. They just open the containers for you to see what you're getting and then you can buy brand new containers of what you like. In some instances they will break a case like cleaning supplies, pinesol and other things too. Sometimes it's fun just to come out here because you never know what you see that will surprise you. Location could be better, it's off the beaten path past 130th Street North and Stone avenue North off to the east side kind of tucked away there. By the way, I still call it cash and carry because it has a nice ring to it.

For two days, items are discounted and treasures can be found. Parking is hard to come by. However, if you park at the 145th park and ride, they have a shuttle on Saturday (I'm not sure about Sunday). For furniture pick up, they will let you into the lot to pull up to the doors to make for easy loading and unloading. I saw tons of volunteers and they were all very nice. They were easily identifiable with aprons and were organized pretty well. Food was available from two food trucks and a concession stand run by students. I found great deals in the electronics room including 2 camera lenses, a computer monitor, and 2 robotic dogs for my little guy. At $26 for everything, I got a great deal! I bought a Columbia fleece, Quiksilver pants, and basketball warm ups for my kiddo at the whopping price of $3 for everything. I got tons of kitchen stuff for my sibling that just got a new apartment as well as old school Tupperware, gadgets, and a pruning saw for $13. I spent 5 hours here shopping. If you shop in the morning, you get a $5 off coupon that you can use between 2pm and 4pm. Overall, the prices were very reasonable and I had a great time. On Sunday, you buy a bag (small for $6 or garbage bag for $20) and stuff it full. Electronics and Best of Show items are half price and you can't use the bag on them. 4-stars primarily for the parking situation and the fact that they want you to eat so you will continue to shop but fail to give you anywhere to sit down. This was an issue because of the amount of rain we had that day.

If I was going to pay $10 for a used T-shirt, I could go to Ross and buy a brand new one. Used plates were $5, Ross would be brand new for $5. I'm trying this at that the prices are way over priced. I understand it's all for charity, but the donated items should be sold for a little less. The reason why it wasn't a 1/5 Stars is due to the fact that the last day there are sales. It was 50% off majority of the things and by the end of the day, everything. I was able to find lots of vintage cameras and film for an amazing deal. I would suggest everyone to check out the electronic side because they have the best prices for awesome items. The clothes and everything else isn't worth it until it goes on the half of deal. I would still come back to browse for stuff and definitely check out the electronic section again. As for clothes or home decor, bring your money!!!! It's good that they accept cash and cards!

I can't remember ever having a checkout experience quite like the one I encountered at Zakia's…read morecheck stand this morning. The customer ahead of me had a large number of groceries that she was bagging herself while Zakia stood by, looking pretty. I had a single quart of eggnog. While I was tapping my credit card, Zakia picked up my wallet and phone from the ledge next to the credit card machine and tried to hand them to the customer still bagging her groceries. I objected, of course. That wasn't all Zakia did. She said to me, "You're good to go." I started to leave before realizing that my egg nog was still sitting, out of reach, to Zakia's right on the conveyor belt. She did not hand me the receipt. Instead, she placed it face down on top of a messy pile of coupons. I could not have exited the store without showing my receipt to the security guard. Even if today was Zakia's first day of work, I will never understand how she can think It was appropriate to touch, much less pick up and hand off, another person's extremely sensitive and valuable personal property. The thing to do is to SPEAK and ask the customer bagging her groceries if the wallet and phone belonged to her. I also would have preferred to wait while Zakia did her job and bagged those groceries herself.
