I love taking my morning walks to Dollop! I look forward to their delicious Caramel Latte which is always topped off with beautiful latte art. The service is great as well, everyone is super friendly. They persuaded me to get the caramel latte and it's been my drink of choice since! The atmosphere is so laid back and cozy. With all of the different seating available, I feel like I could stay there for hours! I couldn't wait to take our weekend visitors there. Great coffee shop in uptown but good luck finding parking. I was visiting family and friends in Chicago. The gentlemen up front was friendly but very monotone, I could barely hear or understand what he was asking me. The menu was basic, lattes, mochas, chais, etc. Most tables were occupied by people studying, hey I'm OK with that. I tried a mocha which I found was good but could have used a tad bit more chocolate. They had pastries and saw some people eating some other food items. With parking in the area being serious I don't know if is the best place to meet friends if you are not from the neighborhood. read more

Hit and miss. I've been here a few times and had mixed experiences. They have an awesome tea selection, which is never disappointing, but when I've ordered a coffee type drink, they've always been inconsistent. They also serve vegan pastries and such things, that are, however, usually quite stale. It can great insanely crowded with laptop junkies who think its cool to claim an entire dining room sized table as their own, even when there's no other available seats (which is all the time on weekends). During the week I usually have better experiences. Extra points for free wi-fi and the comfy couch next to the window downstairs. read more

This may be my favorite place to hang out in the city. It's big, has tons of seating, and feels like a real coffee shop should -- laid back, with good music, and plenty of places to lounge around, read, or hang out with friends. Despite all the complaints about the service, I've never had any problems. Everyone's been perfectly efficient and polite. I can't speak to the quality of your particular "half-caf soy chai latte americano frappucino," or whatever your ultra-detailed order happens to be, but I've never had an issue with the quality of the coffee, lattes, or anything else. Most coffee shops in this city are just designed to drive you out as quickly as possible, or have no idea how to create a comfortable, relaxing environment. I've never felt that way at Dollop. Since we moved to the neighborhood, Dollop has definitely been a regular stop for coffee and tea - as well as some seriously delicious pie. The Metropolis coffee is great, they have some excellent specialty drinks and teas and a really good brie and pear sandwich. I definitely haven't experienced any of the rudeness mentioned by other patrons, in fact the staff have always gone out of their way to be helpful, give suggestions for tea or specials, and once even made our beverages in advance while I embarrassedly ran back 5 blocks to retrieve the debit card I'd left lying in my room. I've found Dollop to overall have a really pleasant vibe and it's just far enough away that the stroll is nice too, so I'm definitely going to be back. Sometimes it's hard to find seating but that's true at every coffee shop. ...I'm guessing those seats maaaay be being taken up by those reviewers earlier who think that buying a new cup of coffee every 2 hours that they're on the internet in a place is CRAZY. read more

Their coffee is decent, prices are expensive but expected. They have that card scanner that asks you to tip, which is the worst obviously. (If you're making me latte art, sure I'll tip you, but if you're pulling the lever on the iced coffee machine, no way, I'm already spending $4.25). Anyway, the baked goods are good ONLY IN THE MORNING. Do not get the tea cakes, muffins, etc. if you are there in the afternoon--they're stale as hell. Overall, great place to get work done. I don't come here often, but I really like this neighborhood cafe. The atmosphere is the best part. Exposed brick, comfy chairs and couches, tables, shelves filled with books, old lamps, funky art by local artists, cool music...it all makes for a very comfortable and inviting environment. Oh! And free wifi, which isn't offered everywhere in Chicago, much to my surprise. The patrons are all busy at work on something or engrossed in a book. Lots of writers, I expect, and you can here the occasional hushed conversation about a play someone is producing or their latest short story. I suppose some might say it's pretentious, but IMHO it's not over the top, and I feel inspired by places like this. Brings me back to my college days when I loved to study in coffee shops. The coffee drinks are inconsistent. I've had GREAT coffee and mediocre coffee here. Today I enjoyed a very good latte. I also had a very expensive, but really good, smoked turkey sandwich with bacon and watercress made by Eat Green Foods. Also had the coconut cream pie, which was yummy...not too sweet, fresh coconut. Came here on a Monday morning a couple weeks ago. While I was in line I had my eye on a muffin to have with my mocha. There were 5 people in line ahead of us. All 5 of the customers ordered a muffin as well leaving the basket empty. After waiting 20min to get a chance to order I asked if they had anymore muffins..... nope...... Monday 8am no muffins... c'mon! Loved the atmosphere, lots of goodies to put in your coffee. Very tasty and reasonably priced. This is long overdue as I come here once or twice a day. SO, obviously I like this place. Why? Because the coffee is great, the staff is cool, the ambiance is inviting, cinnamon rolls(new)/chocolate croissants/Hoosier mama's pies/NY bagels and the revolving classic video game (Tetris is frustrating me currently). The crowd is real and much more interesting than any other place I've frequented. When the Dollop is packed, I feel as I'm no longer in Chicago - maybe Polk St or the East Village. After hosting my writing group here for almost two years, you would think that I'd have several reviews written about this place. I would have given 5 stars had Dollop not knocked their closing time back to 9:00 p.m. Sorry, guys, but my writers love sticking around late from time to time and the 9:00 p.m. closing time is killing us! Otherwise, love this place, and it would appear that many people are finally catching on to what makes Dollop so special. The vibe is very relaxed; the employees are super friendly and helpful (thank you, Max, for putting up with my craziness for the last 2 years!); and the vanilla soy lattes are A-mazing! I can't speak for the pastries since I'm lethally allergic to nuts and all pastries are baked on the same equipment. HEAD'S UP TO THOSE WITH SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES! The downside is that it's become too crowded and popular, and that makes it difficult to just sit down and write. (The hipster channeling was completely unintentional -- seriously, I'm sorry!). That being said, I'm not going to hold prosperity against Dollop. They deserve the recognition that they're getting and I hope that it won't lose its appeal in the process. It's very difficult to find a cafe in this city that lies outside of the "hipster" box, and Dollop is a much-welcome outlier. read more

The tables had not been attended to and there was even a small spill on the floor that everyone kept avoiding. One day I had absolutely nothing to do and decided to have a adventure and find a new place to curl up with a book and a cup of coffee. (I lead a thrilling life). So I jumped on the computer, went to Yelp, and found Dollop. Everyone seemed to be kind of in love with the place so I decided to check it out, and quickly discovered why everyone seemed to like it so much. The little hidden room in the back is by far my favorite part of the cafe. I felt like I could hang out back there for 20 years and no one would bug me, it was fantastic. I also got a kick out of all the old National Geographic issues and green velvet couch that I got to inhabit while I read. The croissant I had was so-so, which is what I usually expect from any cafe, but the guy working was REALLY nice and friendly, which was a pleasant surprise. He also did a fantastic job with my chai tea latte--it was the perfect temperature. I have never encountered a chai tea latte that was the perfect temperature, and I've encountered more than my share of chai-tea lattes, I assure you. This one was so perfect, in fact, that I have not been able to buy another one anywhere else since and not think longingly of the one I had at Dollop. I'm going to have to go back soon. read more

Overall, I really dig this place. It's reminiscent of original coffee houses with used furniture (wobbling are not a plus in my book though) and an artistic feel. The seating is typically plentiful and so are the outlets. Saturdays and Sundays, however, tend to get packed by all of the locals so get there early if you want to study or hang for most of the day (which they are cool with). They've recently put in some new furniture additions, sandwich case and added some extra sweet treats. Their pastry selection is pretty good but not extensive. Interesting choices such as goat cheese filled croissants and like-home made muffins. The carrot is particularly good. The free wifi is generous and they have the latest N frequency for those who have the most up to date wifi cards. For you non-techies, this means fast downloads. The staff is laid back and easy going but if you go in with a Starbucks attitude they probably won't smile all that much. As for the coffee, it's fairly good and they're made very well. The beans are not as dark and rich as Starbucks, which this makes for a good cup of coffee but a poor double espresso shot to sip on. Metropolis coffee is where they get their beans. As for teas, they have a ton of them and they're all fresh...no Stash tea bags at this place. Parking around the area is okay. Probably pretty tough if you're on Clarendon or east of there...try just west on side streets like Buena or Belle Plaine. Downside to this place: Poor temperature control in more extreme conditions, wobbly tables and somewhat weak espresso shots (the beans are weak). Also, the outdoor seating that people think that there is lacks tables...so this is NOT outdoor seating folks. They're chairs for the smokers and paper readers to hang out on. Overall, highly recommended. A great neighborhood coffee house. read more

Comfy chairs, great coffee, free INTERNET, places to work at with your laptop with places to plug it in . Relaxing atmosphere and art on the walls with great music make it a great place to plug away at that work or studying that you need to do . Good coffee every time, never had a problem . I would consider it the cornerstone of coffee places in the neighborhood. Buy coffee at this local coffee shop not the corporate monsters in the area. read more

So I was fairly excited to try this place but was sort of let down by the service. I use to go to Filter in Wicker Park before they closed their doors. I loved that place and was sad to see it go. Since it closed I have been looking for a place with great coffee and similar atmosphere. Just looking at Dollop I thought that was the place, but it wasn't all there The atmosphere was great, it was cozy and inviting. The coffee was excellent. My friend had a Latte and I got a Iced Chai tea latte. Both were quite amazing. I also had a peanut butter granola bar, which was very good. My chief complaint is the service. The barista who took our order was quite rude. After we placed our orders she continued to have a conversation with her friend, who was visiting, before she started to make our drinks. The tone in her voice was very rude as if we were bothering her. I've worked in the service industry and I know how crappy it can be to close out on a Saturday night, but I didn't appreciate her attitude. I'm still willing to try this place again, but next time I get a drink there, I hope they hold the sass. read more

Great coffee (metropolis, so obviously). Friendly baristas. Most of them are of the cooler-than-you variety, but not in an obnoxious/pretentious way. Nice atmosphere, with something for everyone. Good music in the front, quieter library-like (although not oppressive) atmosphere in the back room, and even though it's always crowded on Saturday mornings, I've never had too much trouble finding a seat. I stumbled across Dollop when I was looking for a new coffee shop in a different neighborhood. It certainly didn't disappoint. There was plenty of space for a Monday afternoon - though it's definitely quieter in the back room. Wi-fi was fairly quick and required a simple password. I had a regular coffee, which was fine. No complaints. Also tried the turkey sandwich, which was tasty. I believe there was a chipotle mayo which gave it a little kick. However, I wouldn't come here for a full lunch, as the sandwich selection was limited. Overall, super cute and friendly place. Only complaint? Slow service. I actually love the space, it is big and great place to get work done. There are a lot of outlets, very handy for doing work on your computer. I am not a coffee drinker, but I like their selection of tea's, and recently had a sandwich which was pretty good. My only real complaint about the place is that some of the staff especially one lady can be very rude, short and dismissive. I was here yesterday and the staff was great and friendly, but with her unfriendly nature with several of the customers has changed the atmosphere of the place, and very disappointing. read more

Officially my favorite coffee shop in Chicago. I'm not huge into espresso drinks, which is good, because I prefer The Dollops coffee and teas. They make a pretty killer Chai latte though, I will say. This is great for the following things: Coffee in mass quantities, pastries, pies, sandwiches, getting work done, there's free wi-fi, tables, comfy furniture, and a quiet room all the way in the back if you want to just read and be away from the main cafe area. The dollop baristas always entertain with a great shuffle from their ipod. The place is always mixing up their art and displays to keep it interesting and kitschy. read more

The drinks are just decent, and the pastries are good, my only complaint is that they're a little too expensive for what they are. The wifi sometimes cuts in and out, but for the most part it works. The best coffee I've had in the city, as well as amazing bakery and sandwiches. And the staff is very relaxed and friendly! The vibe overall is very laid-back and cozy, and you can definitely find a spot on weekdays to just read or get some work done. Despite the large layout, weekends get quite busy, so come prepared to be in tight quarters if you can find a seat at all. I love Dollop! I feel like I am sitting in 'Central Perk' from Friends when ever I come here. It's the perfect place to do homework and of course their Tea is to die for. Mmmm.. I can't get enough. The back room with all of the sofas and the chairs is a place you feel like you can sit all day. I come here all the time- it's seriously like my home away from home since I used to live in the neighborhood. On Sundays, I used to religiously come to catch up on work but a word of the wise, which is probably true of every cafe on Sunday- get here early. By about 10, nearly every table is taken. The great thing about this place is that it has two large rooms with a TON of seating, so when I say it gets packed- that means it takes a lot to fill the place so on the weekends in the afternoons, the place truly becomes a zoo. Anyway, the coffee is Metropolis which is way better than intelligentsia in my opinion and therefore the best in the city. The pastries are hoosier mama and therefore made with heart. And the sandwiches are really unique and excellent. The barristas are all really friendly and seem to genuinely love their job- even at 7am on a Sunday morning, which is saying a lot! read more

I stopped in with a friend this past Sunday, 07/10/22. The place was not crowded. My friend ordered tea and paid separately. I ordered iced tea, a sandwich and a salad, and paid $25.44. The casher was new, but figured out how to do the transaction. A short while later, the (seemed like) manager came to our table and told me they were out of several things, and I decided to cancel the food and just keep the iced tea. He issued me a refund, and only later did I see the refund was for $17.70, so I ended up paying almost $8 for an iced tea! Meanwhile the staff was loudly laughing, joking, playing around, and casually waiting on a growing line of customers. They seemed to be trying for customer service but much more interested in having a good time behind the counter. I noticed the food prep person looking stressed out by all the commotion and trying to do their job, but things were really disorganized. This location needs to get its act together. read more

Great place to hang out, read, do homework, or just get your daily fix. Coffee is served beer steins (!!!) and they'll comp you a free cup when you buy a bag of beans. Nice selection of tea and some bottled drinks and baked goods/munchies are available. Lots of tables and outlets for laptop users and there's a bike rack right outside the door! Easy going baristas and free wi-fi. A terrific neighborhood spot. Enjoy!
