My friend had her birthday party here (and by friend I mean stylist-I pay a lot, can't call her a barber). And it was really great. It's what a coffee shop should be, couches in the front by the large windows, a couple of tables set up for people to work, and a back room w/ games a couple more tables and a bunch of couches. This is a perfect coffee shop to go into w/ a book or the Sunday Times and just pass the hours away while sipping delicious coffee (I want to say Metropolis, but I might be wrong, can't quite remember now). dollop is close to my apartment. it's dark, and, as a vampire, i really appreciate the low lighting. come here if you need to study and want to avoid anyone telling loud stories or making business plans, like they do at caribou coffee on broadway and aldine. it's REALLY quiet in this place. it feels like you're in a backroom of your old maid aunt's house. i like that. don't come here if you don't have cash for a cup of coffee. they have a 5 dollar minimum for debit and credit cards, so be prepared to purchase a baked good, if you want to use your card. i ordered a red velvet cupcake from there. the frosting was very hard, like crusty toothpaste. i'm not sure if that was what they were trying to go for, but i'm sure my dentist would be happy i didn't indulge in yet another frosting/cupcake/coffee combo. read more

Thinking about this review has made it clear to me that Dollop and I are in a bit of an abusive relationship: often I come and it's awful and unpleasant and I ask myself why I'm here. Then, once I've convinced myself to try it again, Dollop romances me with a workday so wonderful that I can't remember why I ever left. The wifi may be free, but those new-ish "expire after two hour" codes make me nervous (What if I'm not done after two hours? What if I have one more important email to send and my two hours are suddenly up and I'm about to leave anyway so I don't want more coffee?). I'm not against buying a second drink if I'm sitting for hours, but cutting off my internet seems a little harsh, especially when there's no one begging for my seat. Also, there have always been light and temperature issues - the whole place tends to be freezing in the winter, so much so that I considered bringing a blanket last year . . . and the overall aesthetic does not lend itself to bright lighting, so if you don't have a table lamp next to you, you can forget about reading. And while some of the baristas can be positively charming (I've been offered free refills on my coffee more often than not, and I'm not exactly on a first name basis with any of them), many of them seem like they'd rather be anywhere than making coffee - and frequently are. On the other hand, it's comfortable and cozy and quiet most of the time (though the music, even if well-chosen, could stand to be a touch lower), and it's just the sort of place I can convince myself to go to on a cold day when I don't want to get out of bed and work. The coffee is great, and I appreciate the variety of workspace (large tables, small tables, couches). On the whole, people tend to leave you alone but not make you feel like you've crashed their private coffee shop party, and I appreciate that. On days when everything falls into place, and I've got a table with a lamp and an outlet in the back room to myself, and it's in the low 70s indoors, and the mild roast is delicious and in funky mismatched mugs . . . Dollop could be my favorite in Chicago. Until the next time I come and get slapped around again. read more

This little coffee shop is right around the corner from where I live. The staff is really friendly, the tea is very good, and it's the perfect spot to work on projects/catch up on reading. Very nice place. I would give it five stars, but some of the menu items are a bit overpriced for the kind of quality they are. Overall, great little coffee shop. So I went to Starbucks and ordered a cappuccino and it tasted like luke-warm hatred. I walked on and saw Dollop. I pitched my nastyccino into the trash and went in and ordered one from Dollop. It's simply amazing how big a difference it makes when someone actually cares about how your drink tastes. First off, I kinda like this place, secondly I kinda don't like this place. If you come in regularly enough you start to notice that the baristas have this drama click going on, some kinda pyramid of baristas like high school. I mean I know how serious baristas can take their job, but you are in the service industry and you serve coffee, no offense, I'd happily do it, but common, we're making warm caffiene here.. Alright it used to be more genuine and vintage feeling now it's trying to be vintage and is sort of out dated and the layout of furniture used to be more inviting. Fantastic Metropolis coffee and a chill, comfortable, non-pretentious atmosphere. Very cheap compared to other indie coffee shops. I always feel very welcome and at home when I stop by. Outside seating is pet friendly even though the new Divy bikes eat up the view. Great for people watching or for getting some work done. Baristas are friendly and fast. I also think their bagels are pretty good! Can't say enough good things, only that it gets VERY crowded after 9am on weekend so watch out! read more

This coffeeshop definitely has an insider-y feel to it. I loved the atmosphere--the eclectic furniture, ample seating, plants, etc.--and who can argue with Metropolis coffee? The barista, however, didn't really interrupt a conversation she was having with two other employees behind the counter to take my order. She continued chattering with them as she gave me my coffee and took my money. I worked at a cafe in my late teens and early twenties so I remember what it's like to feel that the customers are just a distraction from the social scene behind the counter, but it's not so awesome when you're on the other side. I guess you have to be accepted into the club to get great service here, however, I like the atmosphere enough that I might just try if I moved back to Chicago. read more

It's like your favorite coffee shop from college and Buena Park is a very nice chilled out change of pace from the Lakeview scene. This place gets shabby-chic just right. The music is NEVER wrong -- you walk in and the Beta Band is playing at just the right volume for one to feel like he's somewhere, but not so imposing that it distracts from everything you're doing (e.g., the erstwhile, Filter). And if you need total quiet, there is the music-less library room in the back. I learned a great deal about the King Jigme SIngye Wangchuck's efforts to modernize the economy of Bhutan from a stack of National geographics back dated from the 1960s. Insightful. Drinks: Good assortment of teas and the iced chai, has this awesome cardamom kick to it -- like old school Indian Chai that mom (well, my mom, maybe not yours) used to make. They also have these great lemon blueberry muffins that sell out by 9am. People who work there are also just laid back and doing their own thing. I miss places like this. I finally visited Dollop about a week ago. Some friends had talked about it. Me, not being from the city noticed that the parking is very minimal. More difficult towards evening. But once I found my parking place, I headed into Dollop. The moment I walked in I knew I would enjoy this place. The exposed brick, the sofas, the mish mash chairs. I ordered my usual staple; non fat latte. I knew that this place was using Metropolis Coffee. And of course the latte was excellent. Nice friendly staff. Great selection of pastries to choose from. I just felt very comfortable here. Reminded me of the little indie coffee places back in Portland, OR. I will definitely be frequenting this place! read more

This homey little coffee shop was part of the reason I moved to the Buena Park neighborhood. This hip little place is a rare neighborhood coffee house in a land of too many franchised coffee joints. Finally, I found a truly bohemian, non chain, authentic coffee house. NO attitude, fun people, fun place, great place to read, or work or chill. Have to say, not so good for conversations, because it seems 80% of the people are working on their laptops, so you are very conscious that folks are probably listening in... but the vibe is great. They just added sandwiches, organic milk, etc. in the front section, so all the hippy chicks have a place to grab food in the hood.! read more

Dollop has made it to my list of the best cafes in Chicago. The seating is amazing and really offers you a bit of everything (high tables, low tables, couches, quiet area, conversation area). The staff are great, dont come off as being too good to serve you and actually are interested in engaging in real conversation. The internet is ACTUALLY FREE which is not the case for most places in the city (usually you get an hour or two and have to spend more money in order to get more internet time). If only there were more cafes like this one! read more

This is a borderline 5 star for me. The art on the wall, the metropolis coffee (yes I love "that other place" down the road on broadway, but apparently so does every cafe owner in this city...sometimes I need a break!), the lovely ladies working...and it doesn't hurt I only live about 2 blocks away. Score. Open till 10, which is huge for me since I don't get home from work till 8, and I love me some nighttime coffee. The music here has never let me down, either. Both times I've been here (so far) I had my ipod in hand, ready to go, and never turned it on. I wish there was more comfy seating up top, thugh. There's a back/lower area that's kinda tucked away, and the lighting's just a *hair* dimmer, and since I go there to read I prefer staying up front...sadly relegated to the rigid chairs. Oh well, not enough of a negative to steer me away by any means, just enough to not put it over the edge into 5-star territory :) but a big thumbs up, regardless. In fact, once I finish this review I think I'm going to go there and read a book and probably *not* listen to my ipod! *edit* Naturally, I'm eating my words. There was actually an open seat on a comfy couch right up front (The few they have had been occupied the other times I'd been there) and I went to the back room and it was lit perfectly well for me to read. Love this place! They have amazing drinks and sandwiches! The atmosphere is cozy and charming. The only "bad" thing is the line can get super long and out the door so be prepared to wait if it's during peak hours! Highly recommended!! read more

It really pains me to bring this review down a couple of notches. The place is charming. But then I started going 2-3 times a week and the novelty of the place really started coming down. First off, the service is inconsistent - some days the coffee drink is excellent, some days okay, some days its crap. There is one barista in particular that never smiles, she is quite depressing. I never get the feeling that I am a regular there - and for 6 bucks each time (2-3 times a week), for coffee I can make at home (I order two drinks) - I would expect more. I'm not saying that I am looking for the cookie cutter consistency from a Starbucks, or even the friendliness of the staff at Starbucks, but, for the love of anything holy to you, please smile once in a while. Please make me think that I am valued in any way for choosing to give you my business. I have other options within walking distance. I keep going because I really hope that it will change. I guess that truly is the definition of insanity, because at Dollop, it won't. And really - charging me 50 cents for a cup of water is nuts. Let me explain that one - charging me 50 cents for warm water from the tap is insane. And after noticing you charged me for warm water and after (very politely) asking you to add ice, I would appreciate if you did not visibly grumble. If policy is to charge for water, so be it. At least make an effort and don't hand me warm tap water without a smile. read more

I gotta tell you, when I first moved to Chicago, I was surprised at the bleak coffee shop selection here--carbon copy corporates and a small handful of (mostly struggling) independents. So, of course I was excited when I found out that they were putting in a new coffee shop in the neighborhood. And, despite my excitement and relief at its arrival, I found my expectations far surpassed. First let me say this review has nothing to do with their food or drink, which are average. a decent neighborhood spot. This is more to do with the fact their place says it is dog friendly, which it is not. I was looking for a coffeeshop I could work from, outside with my dog in tow. When I looked on yelp Dollop seemed to fit all three, outside seating, free wifi and dog friendly. Great! However when I entered I immediately was told I couldn't be there with a dog unless it was certified. I told them I just wanted to order before heading back outside, to which they had to go ask their manager if it was ok. Pro-tip, I would have been in and out in that time anyway. I order and immediately go outside. Then since I left so quick, when someone came by from the shop I asked for the wifi password and was told I would have to go inside to get the information, they couldn't give it to me. Ya know...the place they just kicked me out of. So there goes 2 out of the 3 reasons for being here. Anyway, rant over, I just don't think you should be able to call yourself dog friendly if you cannot bring your dog to the location you need to, in order to buy something from your establishment.(i.e. the counter) read more

Dollop is a cool place to lounge about, as the interior decor is original and down to earth. They have a plethora of teas to choose from, which is always fun. My only complaint about Dollop is that it's not easy for me to get to. This is more of an issue I have with the city of Chicago and the CTA though.
