I like this place. I'm semi new to the area and it's big and convenient for studying. However, there must have been a shift change or something. The music went from smooth great tunes that were just able to be heard, to LOUD TERRIBLE RAP/HIPHOP that is just not conducive to studying. I was just getting ready to take a 2 hour online exam and am now leaving because the music is just that loud and intrusive that I won't be able to concentrate. read more

Good coffee/lattes, good pastries. Can be a little slow when the line piles up and there are only 2 people making drinks and sandwiches. Sometimes people have a little attitude but for the most part they are fine and there are some really nice staff (i.e. "This croissant looks a little small, I'll give you a second for free") It's my go-to spot. read more

I really appreciate the atmosphere here. They staff is super inviting and wonderfully cheerful. I'd give them 4 to 5 stars for the people and place. BUT, that's not the ONLY reason you go to a coffee shop. The primary reason is for a great cup of coffee. My coffee was lousy and my friend agreed his coffee was awful as well. It had a terrible bitter taste and there were grounds in it. While I WAY prefer an independently owned coffee shop, I won't go back for the coffee. read more

Perfect place to sip coffee and study (or play chess!). It's just north of my apartment and I had no idea it was there, but I will definitely return. I'm a coffee snob and their coffee was better than some, but an ever-so-slightly disappointing. Nonetheless, I give it a 4-star rating due to its excellent (!!) milieu and good coffee. I've visited just once and I did like the place however parking is impossible anywhere near the place - in the end I parked good 15 minutes away in a tightly packed one way street. But that's the only minus I can think of! Their internet is good, seats comfortable, their little library out back is great (with the long table in the middle it's perfect for study and craft groups!) and the cappuccino I ordered was very creamy! I'd probably visit far more often but the lack of parking makes it very difficult! read more

In 2010, I walked into KickStand Cafe (on Belmont Avenue), and this was the first of hundreds of visits to Dollop Cafes throughout the city of Chicago and Evanston. Simply the best coffee shop on Chicago's north side and I have been to all of them many times. The Metropolis coffee is made expertly by their staff with great latte art work and all. The nice menu of sandwiches are delicious, due in no small part to the great bread and fresh ingredients, and budget priced. Fresh pastries are available daily and the Rishi brand tea is the best served in Chicago. The atmosphere is eclectic with a wooden decor, soft lounge chairs, a separate back room which is great for meetings, and an eclectic clientele of students, musicians, artists, writers and book readers. And I saved the best for last, the staff! All are extremely friendly and eager to help. Michelle, the manager, is the best! Equally so are the rest of the staff including Michael, Shante (the extremely talented musician/singer), Lace, Johnny (the extremely talented close up card magician), Annie (the extremely talented actor), and Haley. Wonderful coffee and sweets. Often stop in to grab coffee on the way to work, also good place to hang out & read. A bit pricey, but worth it. The spicy Mexican mocha is a fantastic treat. Very glad they're in the neighborhood. read more

I normally go to coffee shops to get some work done so my preference is normally for quiet places. Dollop doesn't fit that bill - the music is loud. But the music is good (only coffee shop where I've heard Liars). And it drowns out everything except the occasional iphone poseur. Oh, and the coffee is good. read more

HOME OF THE 4.00 DONUT. There is a reason they don't list the prieces of the bakery goods. They are hoping you don't ask, with tax a, nothing special donut is 3.29. I really like this place. It's cute, they make delicious drinks and sandwiches, and the baristas are great. I love the Nutella latte. Only complaint would be the noise. I like to come in to study and the music can sometimes be BLARING... Which can be distracting because I didn't come to a coffee shop to have a dance party. read more

Tried the Nutella latte. It was good. The table outside was unstable so I used some sleeves to stable it. The doors to get in and out are very heavy and makes it super inconvenient to get outside with your coffee alone. My friend had a turkey sandwich that was ok. I've recently warmed up to the place after being here a few times. I'm not a coffee drinker but they use locally roasted metropolis coffee which I hear is really good. They have a great selection of tea and I'm currently in love with Paradise Hotel. There are no vegan friendly sweets. Music is a bit loud at times so you might want to bring some headphones. As far as the barista's go it's a hit or miss... advice... smile! read more

I evaluate coffee shops solely on their merits as a study/getting work done space. Dollop excels in this capacity. Plenty of seating and quite a variety, too. Wanna people watch? Grab a counter window spot. Need a well lit desk? Head to the back room. Prefer a cozy couch? They got those. Free wi-fi is not slow but not super fast so you don't get distracted watching cat videos on the interwebz. They have foody things to keep you powering through the study sess. Plus, they play epic movie score soundtracks so you can feel like the hero in your own adventure as you TCB. Rad. read more

These people have no clue how to serve a paying customer. It seems to take almost 20 minutes for one cup of coffee. The employees are not cleanly and the thought of some woman's stray arm-pit hair falling into my cup just kept bouncing around in my head. All that time and worry and the coffee was burnt! Metropolis is my all time favorite coffee companies too bad they are letting this "joke" of a establishment butcher their brand. read more
