The food is good, the decor is nice, but this is gold-plated Tex Mex. The governing ethos seems to be to make the product hard to get and very expensive in order to make it more desirable. It's not easy to get a table in this place, and that may be deliberate--there just aren't that many seats and the pace of service is leisurely. Reservations are recommended. Dolores is the upscale sister of the very crowded El Rancho Grande in Olneyville,. The cuisine is more ambitious, but the ingredients are the modest.inexpensive staples of Mexican cooking, and mostly bland--the waiter asked if we wanted things spicy, and we said yes. I am a huge fan of El Rancho Grande but this restaurant was very disappointing. They took authentic Oaxacan cuisine; which I love because of it's simplicity, it tastes from the earth and it very satisfying. They tried to make it 5-star with small portions, innapropriate preparation of ingredients for a very hefty price. The elotes were extremely disappointing (4 grilled little baby corns, without mayo and a sprinkle of cheese with fried grasshoppers) for $10. They gave us 2 tortillas for a sharing portion of guacamole. They tacos were just ok (octopus al pastor and pork). I will continue to love and visit the other restaurant, but this restaurant left me angry that I just spent all that money for extremely sub par food. Very unique dining experience. It's clear that a lot of thought went into this place. As an appetizer we ordered the salsa flight which consisted of six interesting flavors; some had heat, most did not, but they all were tasty. Oddly, the salsas arrived with only three small tostada shells (we were a group of four). We were given more on request, but it was awkward. As for dinner, it was moles all around. My husband and I went with a couple of friends on a Saturday at 5:30. The place was mobbed and we waited for a half hour. The restaurant is small and very LOUD. We couldn't have a conversation because of the loud noise. The food is way overpriced. They are so stingy with the salsas and accoutrements. The Aguachile was tasteless. The Cochinita al Pibil was well prepared but no accoutrements like pickled onion, cilantro or salsa. Their tortillas are made in house, not by hand buy with a tortilla maker. But they tasted good. The wait staff made it clear that they didn't want to bother to accommodate us with our requests. I know they were overwhelmed with so many guests. Our food never came together, so we couldn't eat at the same time. The churros were awful. My husband asked if they made them when they were order and not ahead of time and the waiter said yes, they made it to order. Well no, they tasted like frozen and reheated in oil, tasteless. The Tres Leches cake was terrible too. A Quesadilla with Huitlacoche was $10.00, unbelievable. The guacamole was less than half an inch of a big bowl. Probably not even a full avocado, it did not have cilantro. Very bland and they charged $9.00. The problem with Mexican restaurants in New England is that there's no presence of a Mexican community here, therefore the restauranteurs get away with murder. Mexican restaurants in RI and MA would not get away with bad food if they were in CA, Tex, NYC, Chicago or the bordering States where there's a presence of Mexican communities and demand good food! Who's going to complain here? Nobody!!! Me, I'm Mexican. And I am always disappointed!!! I don't try Mexican restaurants anymore. But we wanted to give them a try. They are trying but they have to get the basics, which is to be generous with the basics of Mexican food. Salsa ingredients are so cheap. So are onions and cilantro.They have to be a little more generous with their guacamole. In their pictures of their dishes above, they show a generous portion of cilantro and onion and salsas, but it is just for the pictures. They were so skimpy! When I asked for chopped cilantro for my taco, the waiter brought a stem of cilantro with three leaves...lol.. My husband and I will go back for lunch for a cochinita al pibil taco and I will ask again for more salsa and toppings. El Rancho Grande is a long-time favorite, but this tonight was a BIG FAT NO. Perhaps where I went wrong was ordering vegetarian. But many a Mexican restaurants can do vegetarian oh so right. This was not right at all: steamed, mushy carrots, zucchini and corn they called Tacos to share - Vegetarian. No flavor. It was as if someone had steamed a Bird's Eye mixed bag of vegetables and threw it on a plate. Served with 5 homemade tortillas - why the odd number? And were they corn or flour, I still don't know. Accompaniments included four slices of radish - yup just 4 and white onions that may have been attempted to be pickled, cilantro and 3 salsas, while there was heat, the flavors did not come together. The decorations were a bit sparse. We sat at the bar. The bartenders were nice and the cocktails were pretty good. The food presentation was not sophisticated and was simple looking. The chips and salsa sampler was something my young kids could have presented. The bone marrow was a good concept potential but was served without a lot of imagination. The tacos tasted good but were basic. Overall, we did not enjoy it very much and we thought the restaurant lacked the sophistication it seemed to want to project. Enjoyed a really nice dinner here after doing some Saturday errands. Showed up around 4 when they opened as were starving and got a cozy table in their bright and cheerfully decorated space. Very warm and friendly service. Perfectly made margaritas. Husband enjoyed a well-made, interesting whiskey cocktail (Tenochtitlan). We're always about the tacos so enjoyed a bunch of different ones, but loved the Cochinta Pibil and Lengua the best. But man, they also made fab homemade beans too. Yum! The place was packed when we went! Clearly the neighborhood is eager for something new, the the El Rancho Grande regulars wanted to come out and support the new upscale spot. The interior was well done and inviting, which helped make the wait more comfortable (but I suggest making a reservation). The cocktails were delicious, and despite being slammed the wait staff was friendly and attentive. I will start off by saying, I am so glad to see something wonderful in a space that has been underutilized for years.The restaurant is sleek and beautiful, it doesn't look like any Mexican restaurant I have been to in Providence. It is understated, yet the decor is distinctively Mexican. I went with a friend who is not food adventurous, so we ate very lightly. We both got tacos, which are the small "street sized" tacos. We both ordered fish tacos, I got the cauliflower taco, and she got the shredded pork. We both agreed that the fish tacos were our favorite. The fish was nicely cooked and full of flavor, and the garnishes were amazing. Next time I go, I might get a few of these. The cauliflower taco was good, but not amazing like the fish taco. The shredded pork was good also, it was just plain pork, no fancy garnishes. Since my friend is a bit of a plain eater, that was fine with her. In spite of that, she liked the fish taco best too. She also ordered some rice, which was white, mixed with peas, not the orange rice you usually get in Mexican restaurants. It was nicely prepared, and not dried out. The thing that was really outstanding about this meal was the corn tortillas our food came wrapped in. They were heavenly. They were the best tortillas I have ever tasted. I have heard they grind the corn fresh for their tortillas. This is what will make this restaurant stand out. The restaurant was very busy for a Monday night especially since they just recently opened. There was a mixed crowd of people, tables of two with twenty somethings, families with younger children, people who looked like they were stopping in after work. This was our first time visiting Dolores restaurant. I was super excited because there was a new, and more specifically, a Mexican Restuarant, to try out. I had this experience with my partner and two sons. As an El Salvadoran and fellow Central American, I was ready to eat some delicious flavorable food. Our goals were not met, and it came with a pretty hefty price. We ordered the fish tacos, pollo guisado, guacamole, and pork chops. The guacamole was super spicey as well as the fish (which my son couldn't even finish because it was so spicy). The pollo guisado, which usually is flavorable in other cultures, was tasteless and made with pineapple (not common). The frijoles (came with pollo guisado) was the worst black beans I've ever tasted. It had no flavor and tasted straight like water. They also had no juice available, which our 2year old requested (we don't like to give him lots of sugar but we do give him some kind of organic juice mixed with water). That wasn't so bad and he stuck with water. The best part of this meal was our alcoholic drinks, and by best I mean compared to everything else. The bill totaled to $122.00. We left a 20% tip and ended up paying around $144 for our awful food experience. It's too bad that the food quality is so bad because the ambiance was pretty dope. They could do so much better with their food selection and flavor. read more

Being huge El Rancho Grande fans, we were VERY excited to hear about this place. Tasty drinks, but REALLY pricey. It's what I'd call a date night place ($14 for a 2oz Old Fashioned that I probably lifted to my lips 3 times before it was empty). We ordered an appetizer that consisted of three small tortillas stuffed with jalapeño goat cheese. They were okay, but not worth the $9 we paid. I'd have felt good about paying $4 for them. Bartender was very nice and the service was great, but there's too many places to get amazing food in Providence that isn't terribly overpriced. We got one cocktail and one beer each (I think the cheapest beer on the menu is $8, unlike the menu pic someone posted above), and one appetizer, and it was just under $70 with the tip. After the appetizer we were afraid to order any more food (a single $9 taco?). We knew the bill was already getting up there and we didn't want to end up spending $125 and leaving there hungry. People leaving less than 5-star reviews don't seem to understand the concept of regionality in Mexican cuisine or that this place is like, excellent Oaxacan fine dining and the prices and portions are appropriate for the quality of the ingredients and dishes you are getting. The cocktails are delicious (and so is the tamarind lemonade if you aren't drinking). The scallop aguachile was actually exquisite and the octopus al pastor taco was amazingly tender and flavorful. Also, you can't get any better than the warm handmade tortillas that come with the entrees. The flavors, the craft, and the service were all on point and I would def recommend for a nice evening out. Great take out! Order and pay for food through the website, then pick it up at the takeout window. Allow a bit of extra time for pickup since they are pretty busy with only 2 on staff. We got family-style carnitas tacos on housemade tortillas (assembled at home with provided onion, cilantro and salsa), plus chicken mole, rice and beans, and their passionfruit margarita mix so you can make your own at home. Just add tequila! We really enjoyed it and used the extra mole sauce on chicken we made the next day. Don't waste that stuff!!! Amazing. read more

Gotta be honest. I was worried, with the consistent poor reviews and consistent high reviews...I wasn't sure how this was going to go. Loved it. This was the last reservation in town for the time slot I needed (7:45pm), and with no recent pandemic reviews, but still open, I didn't know how this was going to go. Easy parking (blame the pandemic). I can smell the smoker (like meat smoker) going, so my interest is building. Lovely upbeat, ambiance, the four of us sat in a tiny alcove which I'm sure helped break the noise. There's people here! Yay!Service was prompt, though at the end our server disappeared but was replaced by another staff member who helped us out the door. Started with two mezcal margaritas (Tejates), and two Monopolios. Servers kept the beers filled all night, and the mezcal was great so we had two rounds. We're they cheap? No. Were they good and in an overpriced part of town? Yes. I'm ok with this. I thoroughly enjoyed. Again the reviews had me nervous I was going to be hungry, or rather my guests were going to be hungry. Apps were guac, quesadilla, and tetelas. I've never had a tetela, but I was happy to see the blue corn (?) tortilla, dunno, but these are NOT regular purchased tortillas. Some might think they are too rustic, or authentic, but it's a theme throughout the meal and we loved them. Legit house tortillas. Tetela had some good sauces going, dunno what it was but I liked it. Brisket Quesadilla is a yes. Guac, even with the whole tortillas chip presentation, was a hell's yeah. We scraped up every bit. We had brisket quesadillas, we know there's a smoker in this joint somewhere so we arnt about to turn that down....which sets us up for our entrees. I can tell by the reviews the entrees to share are the way to go. So...all four of us order entrees to share. Three brisket mole and 1 carne asada plate. The carne asada was great, husband ate all but three little pieces which came home with us. Can you tell we own a smoker? Don't worry, sometimes if I eat one more vegetable I think I'll turn into one. The rest, we had brisket. Outstanding....and we took a ton home. I hate taking food home, I would prefer to split it out. But it was a mistake in our ordering and I'm going to have a fantastic lunch tomorrow. Also, I was having such a good time, and enjoyed my tacos so Much I forgot to find the mole sauce in the ramekin...so I got two bites, but still worth it: This restuarant is up to you. It's not Taco Bell. Money will be spent. You can make tacos, or you can have some legit tacos brought to you. We can agree here you don't mess with brisket, so let Dolores bring you a plate to share. Dolores is a boon to the dining scene in the East side of Providence. The vibe is casual, but the food would feel equally at home in an upscale restaurant and a family kitchen. WELL worth the price.
