At some point in the journey, I began to think this is like gambling. $39 and it may be a bust. I retreated to the covered interior of the boat, and like many people, started to doze off to the rhythmic rocking of the boat, when thankfully, for the speakers, was awakened to the sighting of whales! I've learned this is the way to approach such excursions: They are not mechanical Disney animatronics, they are not guaranteed to show up. They very well may show up or these whale-watching tours would not be organized at these times. You've made it that far, you got to do the whale-watching. The guides teach you the signs to look for, and pretty soon, you'll get a grasp of it, and start to spot the whales. It's fun, it's educational, it's so worth the $39. read more

We had never been on a whale watch before and based on the great reviews Dolphin Fleet has, we figured we would give it a go while visiting Cape Cod! The women working at the ticket desk were delightful! It was early in the morning and they still had on their lovely smiles and were very helpful in explaining everything we needed to know before the trip. The whale watch itself was great! It was a very wavy sea day and they offered dramamine to anyone who needed it before the ship set off. The naturalist speaking over the PA system during the trip was incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. Unfortunately, I was not made for the whole being out at sea sort of thing (even with the dramamine) and got sick :( (But I get sick just being in the back seat of a car so I wasn't surprised. My husband and nearly all others on the boat did just fine!) I have to mention that when I became sick, the young lady working behind the snack counter was delightful, understanding, and helpful and I felt so much better after she instructed me on what to do. All in all, it was a great experience. We saw humpback whales and an ocean sunfish! It was amazing and almost magical to see these enormous creatures up so close in their natural habitat! What a great trip!! The staff onboard (Dolphin VIII) were very friendly and accommodating. Be aware that the boat ride out to the "viewing area" is about an hour - each way. Pack a lunch or at least some snacks. The snack bar is cash only. I read reviews of other whale watching companies and they complained of only seeing one type of whale or the same whales over and over. We saw about 11 whales in total - or maybe the same 5 over and over again. Either way, it was cool!! This isn't the zoo. The whales aren't just out there waiting for us to show up. What a wonderful experience! The ride was satisfyingly long, they do have snacks on board, overpriced but expected. They also provide some scientific tidbits which are very helpful! We went out on the first trip this morning with only about 50 people on the boat - people must have been scared off by the light rain. Lucky us! I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure! Walking down MacMillian pier, we boarded a fairly packed, big ship we had a good captain, 70 degree weather and calm seas working for us. We saw maybe 5-10 humpback whales, a rare sighting of a full finback body, and a few seals. After a 45 minute comfortable ride out to sea, we starting seeing Salt's grandchild very frequently. My favorite part was: following a jumping school of baitfish at the surface who was trying to evade an ensuing humpback. This whale was within 50 feet of the boat and leaped out of the water, open-mouthed, catching a bunch of fish! Honestly, jaw dropping! Recommendations: -Order tickets online to ensure a seat at your desired time and *use coupon code "Whale," for $2 off/ticket. -Pack a cooler with food and drink, it's easy to stock up with goodies while walking along Commerical St. -Pack warmly, and snag a rail spot at the bow for arguably the best views. read more

I am not a big boat or whale person, but my friends and husband convinced me to try it out. We brought our 1 and 3 year old children. We had to drive waaaaay out to find just a handful of whales and it wasn't for very long. That is not the fault of the company, but it was disappointing. What makes me give a one-star rating is that both the kids and 2 adults (myself included) got sick and vomited. I think the trip was too long and there should be more warning to potential whale watchers about the potential for sea sickness. 4.5 stars... The Dolphin Fleet office location is by the pier by commercial street where you can reserve your spot and/or pay. Adults are $39 and you can get $3 off by getting your ticket online or by being a AAA member. In terms of the boat ride here are some things you're going to want to know (and I wished I had known beforehand): You're going to want to sit on top at the beginning because that's where the tour guide is and she'll be talking and showing and explaining different things. If you really want to sit on the main deck then you'll only hear what's going on through the speakers on the side benches or in the inside cabin (you can't hear anything from the front or back of the boat). The boats even have a tiny bar and grill with a few options if you're dying for a drink or bite to eat. Once the guide has finished the intro feel free to go downstairs as the best view is in the absolute front of the bow (otherwise known as the Leonardo DiCaprio position) as you can see all around the boat with nothing in the way. Basically if you're on either side you'll miss whatever is on the other side and the worst position is the seats in the back. The Dolphin Fleet Whale Watching tour was the best thing I did when I was in Cape Cod and one of the coolest experiences ever. It's the New England equivalent of going on an African Safari as you're seeking out large mammals within vast areas in order to get up close and see one of them in their natural environment. Late spring through early fall is the time to go as the whales go south for the winter. On my trip (which lasted 2-3 hours or so) I was able to see a couple Atlantic white sided dolphins, a bunch of minke whales, and a bunch of humpback whales (I went on the 10am tour on July 23rd). Obviously the humpbacks were the largest, the most impressive, and the ones that spend the most time on the service playing around. Unfortunately I only saw one of the whales breach (jump out of the water) and it was far away and I didn't get a shot of it but I still got some amazing photos and it was an amazing experience. read more

I had been under the assumption for years that tours like this were a scam, but wow, was a impossibly wrong. A brochure found in a hotel caught my eye and tempted us for a couple days, and luckily I became curious enough to look up reviews and see if this was the real deal. Boy is it. I figured maybe we'd only see a couple whales from a distance and it would take a long time before we saw any, but after barely reaching the feeding ground we caught a glimpse of our first blowhole spray. The next couple hours were spent going from one whale to another, trying to spot new ones with everyone else, taking pictures, and "oo-ing" and "ah-ing" along with the rest of the boat. The woman who spoke over the PA was informative and added to our interest greatly. Additionally, the price of the ride was a lot cheaper than I had prepared myself for, so cost was a non-issue for such an amazing experience. Go. Bring your kids and the rest of the family. Don't let anyone talk their way out of going and miss out. This is a truly amazing experience that one would think is only available to scientists or the rich, but it's a great time from anyone and everyone. I cannot endorse this nearly enough and expect to likely go again. Awesome. Oh, and do bring a jacket, windbreaker, etc. Also be aware that they sell food and drinks aboard the boat, so you don't need to worry about bringing anything. Amazingly great charter to see some whales. We saw about 40 whales all around us. Some quite far off and some way too close. It is simply amazing. This puts other whale watching cruises to shame. The whales here are feeding, nursing, rolling around, relaxing, and having fun. We are from the west coast and typically only see migrations where we chase a whale up and down the coast. Our family of 4 just took this tour yesterday. The Dolphin Fleet tour was recommended by a local. I do think they may be a little pricier than others (we paid 39.00 each with AAA discount and we saw signs for 34.00-36.00 on the docks for other tours). However, this is a responsible tour company with respect to the sea life. They love their whales and have a conservationist on board who knows EVERYTHING there is to know about whales and sea life in general. They also support whale research. We were on their newest boat and it was spotless and our cruise was very smooth. Crew was friendly and let the patrons get up and move around once we were out of the harbor. If you get on early (line up in front of the boat and wait at least 1/2 an hour before if position is important to you), find a spot you like (up front, upper level seating along the cabin is good viewing.) We were amazed to see between 25-30 Humpback whales and 2 Minke whales. They came right up to the boat and several seemed to be putting on an exhibition for us! One slapped the water repeatedly with it's tail (30 tons of power!!) right near the boat. Another kept spinning and turning and still another turned on it's side and slapped the water with it's fin. It was one of the most incredible spectacles I've ever seen! Definitely worth the price - no question about it. The naturalist did a wonderful job explaining and narrating what each behavior was and why they think the whales engage in it. The captain was careful to quietly maneuver the boat for the best viewing from all sides, trying to accommodate all the passengers from all vantage points. I suggest leaving AMPLE travel time to Provincetown during peak summer months, and make sure you call ahead and reserve your spot on the boat, as they do sell out. We parked next to the municipal lot, which was already full by 11:30, and paid 15.00 for the day at the lot right next to it. The price of parking went up from there in surrounding lots. (Note: As you approach the harbor from 6A, several attended lots post signs charging 20.00 for the day - that's a rip-off, as lots closer charged less.) However, I hear that parking can be hard to find by afternoon. Also, the Dolphin Fleet web site lists what the sightings were at times throughout the week, so check their blog. The view of the shoreline from the boat was beautiful, but not worth the price if the whales aren't in the neighborhood! Enjoy! read more

I had never done a whale watch so I didn't know what to expect. Wow, what a great experience. We saw 16-20 different whales. All 3 major varieties that was in the area including humpback, minky and fin whales. The whales followed us along and were so active as it was feeding time. So cool to watch the birds flock and follow the whales along. We got a real lesson in whales and the environment. Our 3 kids age 3, 6 and 9 and loved it. I wasn't sure if it would be good for the little guy. It was awesome! read more

We thought we may see a handful of whales off in the distance during our trip, but we never anticipated the incredibly moving, stunningly breathtaking, National Geographic-wildlife-documentary-caliber experience we had on the 4 p.m. tour, Monday, Sept. 3. Go early! We saw all of the action while the others boats - the ones that left later - were in the distance trying to catch up! This was my first time out on a whale watch boat and I was definitely not disappointed. I was nervous because the morning was incredibly foggy, but we saw three humpbacks (a mama and her two babies) barely thirty minutes out on the water. The crew definitely did an excellent job with finding and tracking the whales; allowing all of the eager passengers to see no matter where they were on the boat. Unfortunately, they are wild animals so everyone's trip will be different. But definitely would do again and highly recommend. read more

Our group of 6 went whale watching on a rainy (almost stormy) day where the waves were 5ft crests. As such, our boat load was a light one and everyone had an easy time getting good views of the whales. Liz, our naturalist, was fantastic. She satisfied the birdwatchers of our group with knowledgeable information of the summer and winter birds hanging around in-between seasons, along with all of her extensive knowledge on the patterns of whales. She was also very gracious in announcing missing binoculars (which we got back). The captain, (Brian?) kept pace with the whales and gave us some great sights. Some Sightings: Cormorants, Shearwaters, Great Black-backed Gulls, & other birds I can't remember.. 2 Gray Seals A few Minke Whales A couple Humpback Whales A Fin Whale (We saw this on our way back, Liz told us to "Get back out there!" and we're sure glad we did!) 2 doses of whale poop (research material and fertilizer of the ocean)! read more

I checked their site and there were lots of whales. The last post was two weeks old and all the whales had since moved north. They forgot to mention that the whales had all moved north. Two of them have recently returned and we chased one of them for 30 minutes before our time was up. Try to find up to date info on recent sightings as this is too much time and money to invest if there are no whales. I am sure it is wonderful when there are whales but 1/2 day and $45 is way too much to invest when there aren't. The whales come and go but they are not going to tell you if there are whales in ptown or they have moved to greener pastures. Avoid rough seas. Am pretty sure the person behind me had lobster the night before and we raised our feet as they rinsed it overboard it. It added to the the discomfort of several people in our group that were trying to manage their last meal though we did not add to the smorgasbord. Do not get coffee at the snack bar. It is the worst i have ever had and i am a fan of Cumberland Farms coffee. If they don't show a lot of sightings (15+) right before you go, don't bother. A waste of 4 hours and $40. read more

Went here during an April trip to Cape Cod. The staff was very friendly, starting from the people at their ticket office. Since it was April, the boat was not too full so we could get great pictures and views of the seals and whales. I would definitely recommend this to someone that hasn't experience it before. Food is available on the boat, but I would eat before the ride since it can be a bit pricey. read more

Had never done this and was very glad i went. By far one of the coolest experiences i had ont eh cape recently. I sat on top and was very glad i did - the tour guide is there so you can very clearly hear them. Also - being on top gives you such a better view. We saw about 20 whales and even had the opportunity to see about 5 of them breach which is absolutely amazing (where they jump out of the water). We also saw a sunfish which has to be the ugliest fish ever (poor guy). The boat is clean, with plenty of space and a great knowledgeable staff. Depending on when you go you might want to pack an extra sweatshirt or jacket. read more
