Must visit on Arthur Avenue- this is the real Little Italy. Huge portions, classic atmosphere

I've been here a few times over the years, three to be exact. I don't come out to the BX too often but when I do, I try to make an effort and hit this place up. When I started coming there was no menu on the wall, there is now though. My most recent visit, my girlfriend and I shared only two things but was enough food IMO. We went on a Saturday so we were able to try the Chicken Rollatini Saturday special. Two rolls of chicken with prosciutto, mozzarella and smothered in Marsala gravy. Definitely unique but it was excellent. The cheese, the ham, that Marsala sauce.. just look at the pictures. What keeps me coming here is the Linguini alla Gianni, previously known as the Liguini alla John. A simple garlic/oil/tomato sauced with diced shrimp and clams with parsley. If you've been to Don Peppe's in Ozone Park, think of this as an evolution of their Spaghetti & Shrimp Sauce. Each bite is chock full of al dente pasta and bite-sized clams, shrimp or both! I'll even venture to put this down in my top 5 pastas. I gave my brother the leftovers who happened to be in the Bronx at the same time. He ate it several hours later and texted me "sick" later that evening. If you're in the area, you should absolutely go. If you're not in the area, you should still go. You'll be glad you did. After quickly reviewing the menu, we came in for lunch! COVID19 form completed and temperature taken. Looking closely at menu once sitting down, I found it so boring, I had no idea what to order. We went with the linguini and clams and chicken parm with pasta. The pasta on both plates was almost rubbery, sitting around and not thoroughly warmed to capture the sauce. Just limp, very aldente pasta and although an incredible 2 pieces of chicken they were flavorless and lacked any finese. No fresh clams on the linquini, can they afford 2-3 for presentation at least! By the way, next time give us real EVOO to dip our bread. read more

OK. We have been coming here many times now. And the food is STILL really good. It's a bit annoying that they do not have menus, because I always forget that they have tripe. I love tripe, but since there's no menu and the waiters never tell me about the tripe-I forget to order it. This is always our early dinner stop after a day at the Bronx Zoo. My kids love the fettuccine and meatballs (they're huge), I usually get the clam sauce with fettuccine, but I tried it with shrimp and clams and it was even more delicious! The baked clams are really good. The calamari is decent (sometimes a bit on the chewy side), the salads and entree portions are bit and definitely shareable. I wished the waiters remember to offer everything on the menu instead of just 4-5 items. read more

Come here once a year for my dad's birthday dinner (his choice). Last years dinner event left something to be desired for. This year's food was so much better. We had two bottles of the house Merlot which was delicious and I don't normally drink merlot. Our table of 9 shared two cold antipasto, an order of calamari and stuffed artichoke. We ate chicken ala Johnny, the veal special, some chicken rollitini special, and penne vodka. My 3 year old actually ate this year which is a win. This cash only joint had our party of four doing laps to the ATM machine - the food was so good we just couldn't control ourselves. What did we eat? Baked clams out of the oven were garlicky and buttered to perfection, like little boats of heavenly saltiness. Bread is pretty killer - use this to your advantage and don't let any sauce go to waste. I got so excited just now on the food let me give a quick update on the drinks. Espresso martinis were excellent, and the house red punches above its weight... one member of my party was walking with a limp after a glass or two. Pasta a la Dominick - get this and send me a picture, I miss it already. Will be naming my first born child Dominick, boy or girl. So utterly disappointing, I cannot believe it. Went on a Sunday late afternoon, ordered Chicken Marsala and Beef Bragioli with some house red. This food was BAD. The marsala had canned mushrooms, cheap chicken, and a oily sauce. The beef bragioli was a hunk of inedible, tough meat with a greasy tomato sauce. The wine was ok. Service was passable but nothing great. Oh and how nice that they dont accept credit cards either. I would never come back and never recommend this spot. Plenty of better choices. read more

My favorite place to eat. Don't be intimidated by the lack of menu and shared tables. Just go! Get an antipasto, stuffed artichoke, baked clams and any recommended entree and you will not go wrong. Their seafood platter is the most incredible dish I have had. It's huge and can be shared. read more

Old school Italian joint in Da Bronx. Just a no frills place with little decoration or ambiance, long family style tables that you will share with others on the main floor, but it has a certain old school charm to it. The bathrooms are upstairs on the second floor seating area which looks like a nice place for large parties, but I heard it's hardly used. No menus. The waiter will relay a list of what they have for the night. He won't write anything down. You will get the correct food you order. Friendly service in a no-nonsense way. Solid Italian comfort food standards. Being that I grew up eating delicious Italian food done right by my mom, aunts, grandma, and sister I am a bit critical at times. I still have not found anywhere that makes Italian food and sauce as good as mom and sis. Sorry Dominicks, but you also fall short. Not bad, but it was a valiant effort. The basket of fresh bread was good, but no oil to dip in. Packets of butter are a fail. Sauteed broccoli that had a covering of bread crumbs and cheese. Ok. Stuffed artichoke. Ok. Ziti with meat sauce. Good. Washed down with a small glass of house wine. Ok. The portions are large and we did take some home with us. In fact, we saw many others taking bags of food to go from their meals. Overall, the meal experience here was tasty. Decent prices but they don't accept credit cards here? Meh. C'mon guys, it's 2015. The bill for two or more will still run $60 - $100. Accept some plastic as not everyone has a wad of bills burning a hole in their pockets. They hand you a piece of paper with the final amount on it. It's kind of funny in a "you better pay this or we'll break your kneecaps" kind of way. Overall, it's a well known locals joint that has great neighborhood support, but it's a bit of a shlep for anyone else coming up from Manhattan or further out. It's also kind of a touristy spot at the same time. Worth a trip once to at least say you ate there. Wish I could rate with half stars as this was a 3.5 star meal to me. Alright so my last review kinda took a crap on top of this place. Last night I was there because I was running a decent sized tour of Arthur Ave (9 total), and the place best fit the group's needs. While the experience didn't change my opinion that much, it did make me like the place a bit more. We got there around 3:15pm on a Saturday, and as you could expect of Arthur Ave on the weekend during the Christmas season, it was pretty packed. They fit us by the door, and when the last 2 guys showed up, they joined the table adjacent to us and I joined them as well. While this was a little annoying with the passing of the food and all, the others at that table and the staff were cool about it; I would say that it actually added to the experience for the people I brought there, actually. The biggest notable thing different this time was that the service was much better, even though they were near capacity. On previous visits, they were near empty and very irritable, so thats an interesting dynamic here. Regardless, all the servers were friendly and very helpful this time, and I appreciate that as it was needed here. Atmosphere-wise, Dominick's was Dominick's: its not a place to go if you want to eat alone without anyone bothering you. However, my table alone got into several nice conversations with the people sitting with us, as well as those waiting to grab a table. This is part of the charm of the place, and if you can't deal with it then don't come. As far as food goes, we got the stuffed peppers and the antipasto salad to start, and the chicken scapariello, roast veal, linguini w/ shrimp, a small eggplant parm, a side of broccoli rabe, and a bottle of their house red (which they bottle and sell now apparently, along with their antipasto salad dressing). The house red wasn't gonna win any wine spectator awards, but it was a nice, low key homemade red and I enjoyed it. The bread, as you could expect on Arthur Ave, was great and they did pitchers of water for us, which certainly made things easier. The antipasto salad was actually really good this time, and the stuffed peppers were pretty good although they coudl've used more seasoning. The chicken scapariello were made correctly (boned) and the meat was very tender, the eggplant parm was good, the broccoli rabe could've used a little more garlic but was otherwise good, and roast veal was good but not as good as last time (didn't get to try the sauteed cabbage it came with). The linguini with shrimp (in a red sauce) was addictive, with delicious sauce, plenty of small, perfectly cooked shrimp, and was easily the standout dish. As others have noted, they don't do dessert, so we just walked across the street to Madonia to get some cannoli. All of this came to $215 for 9 people. Considering how big the portions were and the fact that there were significant leftovers, ~$24 per head isn't bad. Especially considering that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, even the moody guy who was sick at the time. Although at times it can seem kitchy and like a food factory, Dominick's is the last of a dying breed (I know of only 2 other NY places with a similiar setup, and they do actually have a menu now posted in the back by the stairs). Its definitely worth going at least once, and if you love homestyle Italian, are an easy going person, and enjoy talking to people for the hell of it, you'll definitely enjoy it. read more

Wow. Don't know where to start. Walked in because of a short list of places to go on Arthur ave from Time Out NY or some list like that. Figured we couldn't go wrong on Arthur Ave right? Wrong. Started with a Campari and Soda in a pint glass filled with ice with some pink stuff on the bottom and foam on top. I was with my boys and we ordered a portion of ziti with a vodka sauce and their supposed specialties, chicken scarpariello and chicken cacciatore. I asked for a glass of red with this and was told the only red wine by the glass was Merlot, Dominick's Merlot lol. The only other option was a bottle of Chianti for $58 or an Amarone and they usually are $80 and up so didn't ask. The Merlot couldn't have been older than a 2021 and tasted like grape juice according to my son Nick lol. I agreed. The food came out and could not have been more average. The vodka sauce said nothing and don't bother getting the chicken, either of them . Both with a relatively bland sauce not resembling either of those dishes. We were so bummed . To top it off it's an unannounced cash only which is in small print at the bottom of the menu so required a trip across the street to the atm. The bread however was great. Best part of the meal. So skip this one guys . I've been to a couple of others next door that were good so pass. read more

I hate to say, Dominicks is a disaster. Would give zero stars if I could. I had originally eaten at Dominicks 10 years ago and it WAS delish. I always loved the charm of this authentic Italian restaurant on the famous Arthur Ave. Times certainly have changed. We were there for dinner on Sunday. We were seated pretty quickly, and our server was very charming. Unfortunately, went down hill from there. They were out of virtually everything on the menu. It was like a comedy routine. We were told there was a Yankee game so that was why they ran out. If everything is cooked fresh, I am not sure how you can be out of Chicken Parm but have Chicken Marsala. I mean, how does an Italian restaurant run out of pasta? All they had left was penne. BIZARRE. Anyway, we finally were able to find enough menu items to place our order. We still had high hopes of a great meal. I was quite excited to try their famous meatballs. Needless to say, the food was an epic fail. Food overall was flavorless and served at room temperature. Eggplant parm was mush. Penne a la vodka was watery. Shrimp were stringy. Stuffed shells were run of the mill at best. The red sauce was just bad and flavorless. This is a good restaurant, but not the best in the area. First of all, make sure you look at the menu outside, they don't give you one when you sit down. They are a cash only business and do not give you a check, they just tell you what you owe. Their best item on the menu is the stuffed artichoke. It's almost a meal in itself. I suggest you share it. The rest of the food is good, but not the best for the area. They have community seating which I like, because you could talk to other people . I have never gone to a restaurant that doesn't present a menu. It was a great idea. It's hard enough to picking a place to eat. This restaurant saves time when the waiter named Jack named what he recommended we definitely enjoy. He was absolutely right. Not only was it amazing but the size platters was enough to serve a group of seven of the hungriest people. We practically filled the tables with food. We were treat like kings and queens. They were so attentive always filling our water glasses and refilling the bread without being asked. Jack had a couple of jokes made us feel happy to be there. Pasta was perfectly cooked, sauce was nice and thick and very tasty. Pork chop was humongous and so tender we didn't have to use a knife to serve ourselves. I would give this place ZERO stars if I could, because nothing about this place impressed me. I wish I was the other guy and had a dog to feed my leftovers to, but since I didn't, we had to leave all our barely touched dishes behind. I was going to say give the one star to the service, but no, I can't even do that, since the owner of this establishment went in defense mode and couldn't not handle my criticism over his restaurant. He tried to pick a fight with me - very professional. Instead of reading comments and use the feedback in a positive light to learn from the mistakes of the food, instead he took it to a dark place. Not surprised. since Meghan A. also received a message from the owner telling her off. We just came back from the Hamptons and so F and I had baked clams on our mind. I'll give them points for cleaning the clams well, but the clams were tough and non-aromatic. The ones that I had in the Hamptons, before they even arrived to our table, we could smell the baked goodness. NOT HERE. We tried so hard to have these clams taste good, but pushing through the butter and piling it on doesn't seem like it's worthwhile. Bolognese Penne - I am not Italian and I didn't have a Nonna to teach me how to make pasta, but P and I both make Bolognese better and again, neither of us are Italians. Meatball - Not a good OMG, but a bad one, I don't even know if this was meat, because meat tasted weird and dry AF. Seafood Spaghetti - I thought this would come in a nice garlic olive oil, but it came in the marinara sauce, which was fine, but again flavourless and both the shrimp and calamari was overcooked. I love seafood and I couldn't stomach to eat theirs and we all had to let the food go to waste. The other two people that I was with lied to the old waiter and said we were just too full. I would never have lied, I would have told them straight up it is overcooked and bland. Not edible at all. I actually wouldn't even give them to my future dog, because I don't want to put my dog's health in danger. Yes, they have been in business for over 50 years and they have 4 stars and followers willing to stand up for their food, but if anyone has ever eaten in Michelin stars restaurants or Italian restaurants that shaves FRESH PARMIGIANO REGGIANO CHEESE for you onto your hot pasta should know better. This place gives you Parmesan cheese in a shaker. WOW - even I do freshly grated parmigiano reggiano cheese when I cook pasta at home. I also think this place is shady, because one it is cash only, so their totally not reporting their income and not to mention no menu and they don't give you the price when they verbally give you the offering of the day, so they easily can make something up. EATERS BEWARE. Because when the bill came, the waiter first told us our meal was $138, but he's like "you didn't have anything to drink, oh it's $58 dollars" - so that's a red flag right there. Came to the Bronx for Chihuly and wanted to taste good Italian food, but at least did one out of the two. This is a hidden gem located on Arthur avenue that you either have to be told about, or know about. For starters this place is cash only, so make sure you come prepared. Furthermore, if the idea of no menus and no check but being told verbally what your meal price is bothers you, I highly do not recommend coming here. The place is quaint and very tight packed. The bar is upstairs. There are different specials every day of the week, which your waiter will go over. I highly recommend the anti-pasti as an appetizer, to go along with your bread. We had heard a lot about the Little Italy on Arthur Avenue so with the help of Google, we decided to stop by Dominick's before heading to the glow show at the Botanical Gardens. With the weather starting to get a little chilly and the Covid numbers steadily rising, it was good to know that they still have the option for both outdoor and indoor dining. Despite Covid, indoor dining is still on the table, but this place,while truly exceptional with taste, was not so great with adhering to the CDC measures/guidelines. They did check your temperature upon arrival and had someone from the party write down their contact info, but the entire staff was not great with adhering to the face covering regulations. Social distancing, however, It's strictly adhered to in the restaurant. I highly recommend, however, trying their food, but personally, I would have opted to have eaten outside. If we didn't have after dinner plans, I would have even ordered take-out, which says a lot since I'm coming all the way from Queens. read more

I saw others who had sides of pasta, why didn't they offer it to us, even for an upcharge? 2. No bill, no prices even recited to us. Fine you don't have a menu but tell the people what each dish costs. 3. Went inside to use the bathroom. and low and behold there were MANY OTHER different dishes being served other than what we were told was on the menu. Otherwise it'll be as if you went on an affordable beach vacation and complained about the sand in your bathing suit and the sun in your eyes. HERE'S WHAT YOU GET: You will have the best eggplant Parmesan you will ever have in your life - and my father agrees with 68 years growing up in "The Sopranos" NJ as experience. The food is magical. You will eat quality home cooked food that doesn't serve fish on Sunday bc it wouldn't be fresh. You will not get a check and trust your waiter - who is masculine and matter of fact. They will tell you what they have and the menu on the opposite wall is just a loose guide, not scripture. You will sit family style. Approaching 40 this year I can still remember asking for linguini calamari from Dominick's for my Eighth birthday. Over 30 years later, Charlie is still manning the bar, Patsy still serves through narrow aisles and that linguini calamari hasn't changed a bit. It brings tears to my eyes knowing No matter where my life brings me I can still go back to Dominick's and be home. An institution. Antipasto salad and artichokes to start (1 feeds 2-4), Then linguini calamari, chicken scaparialo, stuffed pepper and broccoli rabe. Steak or Porkchop with hot peppers if you're craving meat. Overall the food was disappointing as expected it to be exceptional Italian food based upon it's Arthur Avenue location. The linguine pasta was virtually tasteless and the cheese that was served upon request seemed like it was a variety from Kraft. The salad was also only OK and hardly exceptional. The Peroni Beer and the Italian Bread served with the meal was, however, very good. I would rate the service as very good. read more

Solid food at a reasonable price but really nothing to write home about, especially for the Little Italy of the Bronx. Particularly underwhelming was the free bread. A bit silly to complain about something free, but we've come accustom to exceptional bread with your meal and with some of the best bakeries in the city around the corner, it's a bit disappointing.
