Red Table clothes and a chalk blackboard with all the specials listed front and center. At the corner table I see chef/owner Marco Coletta. He's sitting and just watching the operation. I see someone walked up and gave him two huge tomatoes?? I scan the menu but I know what I want, the lasagna bolognese. I also ordered a glass of Montepulciano wine. Everything comes to the table quickly. Look at my picture, I can see in the Ragu's soffritto the finely chopped carrots. It's the perfect meat sauce covered in delicate pasta sheets. Just a simple, homemade lasagna. No need to get fancy with truffle toppings. I would have liked to sample their bread basket but it was never brought to my table. We kicked things off with the fried calamari and baked clams -- both were perfection. The calamari was crispy and tender, not greasy at all, and the clams were packed with flavor. For our entrées, we had the linguine with clams, which was spot-on -- perfectly al dente pasta swimming in a garlicky, briny sauce that you just want to sop up with bread. We also tried two specials: the Bracciola Pennete and the Poussin Sausage Scarpariello. Both were incredible -- rich, hearty, and full of that homemade Italian love you can't fake. Came here on a Saturday night around 7:45-8pm, we did not realize that they were to close at 9pm, and the staff seated us without mentioning it. Regardless, that seemed to be plenty of time, but the waitress immediately came over to take our order before we had time to review the menu and the special options. She quickly came back a second time and said they wanted to send home the chefs so we needed to order fast. We were still not ready. By the third time, we had no choice but to order and quite frankly, felt very pressured to make a decision. My guest and I were not fully aligned on appetizer or drinks yet, but the waiter was still grilling us, so we ended up ordering just to accommodate their urgency. We ordered rice balls as an appetizer, and while delicious and clearly homemade, the inside was still a bit cold. They had taken away our menus before we had time to review the drinks, and the waiter rudely explained that they did not have by the glass on the menu when we asked for the menu back, so he just listed the house wines. We did each order a glass of wine. When we got the bill, the beverages were totaled at $42. We did additionally start with bottled sparkling water, but this still seemed egregious and the total was not broken down. If we had a chance to review the menu, we would have likely purchased a bottle of wine instead, for about the same price. The main dishes were absolutely delicious, and you can tell the food is authentic, but overall left feeling disappointed by the customer service experience. read more

We ordered a cold antipasto and fried calamari to start us off. My nephew and myself ordered a beer and his gf ordered wine.My nephew ordered veal with mushrooms from the menu. His gf ordered from the special list which was Sole Francaise. I also had a special, Veal Chop Capriciossa which is pounded veal coated with a batter and coupled with salad. The chef came out of the kitchen and yelled at us for wasting food in front of our entire party and the whole restaurant, screaming that he cooked it perfectly and we don't know what medium is. When we said that we didn't order it medium, he flipped out even more. Our waiter apologized profusely for something that wasn't his fault. The rest of the food was fine but not worth this. This might have been THE most welcoming restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of visiting in my 11+ years in NYC. They really did capture the warm, welcoming cultural vibe of southern Italy. At first, I had a reservation to come here after a Yankees game, which I unfortunately had to cancel once the game was delayed for 2 hours due to rain. Once the game was over, I called to see if they could still get us in (a party of 5), which is tough on a Saturday night. I'm happy to say that they were able to seat us after only a 10 minute wait and an hour before the kitchen closed. I'm so glad they did! The entire staff is warm, welcoming, helpful, and cheerful. Cheers to Todd and the whole team. The FOOD! Wow. I just got back from 10 days in Italy and this took me right back. I tried the lasagna bolognese, the pasta a la matriciana, and the veal scallopine. All were fantastic!!! The wine and espresso were great as well. The ambiance - a convivial, family vibe. Think red and white checkered table cloths, but you're in someone's home in Italy. All the patrons seemed to be enjoying themselves and had a great time. At one point, they put the Italian happy birthday song on the central speaker system and brought a cake to one of the patrons - this is something that actually happened to me in Italy as well!! The whole experience was very authentic. This will most certainly become a post-game staple for us. I can't wait to come back! My brother graduated from college the other day, and before planning a large party with extended family this summer, we thought it would be nice to have a small dinner with just close family to celebrate the occasion. My brother wanted to eat on Arthur Ave, and ultimately chose here at Tra di Noi. I've been to a few restaurants in the neighborhood but this one escaped me, so I was excited to check it out. Tra di Noi doesn't sit on Arthur Ave proper, but rather on E 187th St which also contains a number of hot spots frequented by locals and tourists. Walking in, you're immediately greeted by the dining area; it's not a large restaurant - there are maybe 10 to 15 tables with a bar towards the back. The decor is simple - a muted red covers the walls with touches of Italian flair throughout. They don't have a large menu, but they have an extensive list of specials so there's really a good variety to choose from. They have a few items that are out of the box, but the majority is straight-to-the-point Italian. I decided to start with a burrata - they were very generous and provided two mozz balls with the app, and paired with basil, roasted red peppers, and tomato which worked really well. I heard they were best known for their pork chop, but I was feeling pasta so I went with their gnocchi special. This was prepared simply with marinara sauce and basil which worked perfectly. The sauce was good and the gnocchi were pillowy soft. Since it was a special occasion we ordered dessert; I chose the limoncello gelato which was pretty good. I could tell they don't make their desserts on site, which is pretty common. Service was excellent, our server and the management team were extremely hospitable - always making sure we were being taken care of. The food also came out at a good pace which I appreciated. Overall, I had a great experience at Tra di Noi. This may not be the first restaurant people think of when it comes to Arthur Ave eateries, however they serve good, fresh Italian food with great service. Went here today for dinner with some friends. It was an okay experience. It's an intimate restaurant, that is giving cozy and traditional Italian family vibes. There was one server taking orders and another worker who was running around flustered. For drinks, we tried the house white and the 175ml bottle of Rose Regale. The Rose was very sweet but I enjoyed it. The house white was smooth upon initial taste; but the more my friend drank, she realized it was too acidic and even had to water it down- she couldn't drink it. The bread that came out was half hot and half cold. For apps we did the clams and the calamari. These were the best part of our meal. But maybe it was because we were really hungry at this point. I ordered the lasagna which I was told was the best thing on the menu. While I did finish my plate, my friends and I agreed it tasted like Chef Boyardee. Not worth having in a restaurant. My friend asked between two dishes and the server told her the Halibut was excellent and it was on the specials for the day. My friend paid $40 for a dry, sauceless, bland fish that was covered in way too many bread crumbs. The worst thing about our experience, the second we ordered our server, an older blonde woman, never came back to our table once to check in. It did take us some time to decide on our mains and she seemed annoyed with us. Came here during an off hours time. The place was pretty empty and there were two servers working at the time. We weren't that hungry so we ordered a chicken parm to share. The server was visibly annoyed. He asked how many beer and wine cups we wanted and when we said we were just going to have water he just grunted. We have been here a few times before and always enjoyed our food. We were a bit pressed for time and not very hungry so we wanted to order a couple of appetizers and split a salad for 2 that was on the menu. When we placed our order or tried to at least the waitress questioned the fact that we weren't ordering entrees. She went on to say the owner/chef would not accept an order without entrees on it . We asked to share the salad and 1 entree. That didn't satisfy her either. She said the entrees won't cost you much more. Um, not the point. We weren't that hungry and we just wanted a quick bite. So we ordered 2 entrees and nothing else. No appetizers, no salad, no coffee or dessert. I wound up taking half of mine home. Trust and believe that if we had the time to go walk around to go somewhere else we would have gotten up and left. I don't think any restaurant should be able to dictate what you can and cannot order. Not sure if we will ever go back. Other restaurants I would prefer to give my money too. This became our "go to" place in the area a few years ago as some of the older, well known places weren't as good as they used to be. It is hard to get a bad meal on Arthur Ave but Tra di Noi is one of the best. It is a small and very popular place so large parties might be tough and a reservation would be advisable during dinner time. A friend and I snuck in for a late lunch on a weekday and were able to get a table no problem but it was definitely getting busy as we were wrapping up. I discovered Tra di Noi in 2003. I was a first year teacher in a nearby school and looking for a place to blow off some steam on a Friday. In that year Marco (owner/chef) and Matilda (waitress extraordinaire) provided me the oasis I needed at the end of the week to survive my first year of teaching. I even brought my entire 6th grade class there once for lunch! Now 19 years later I am still frequenting. This place was horrific in many ways. It was very expensive for the amount of food they serve you. To start they give you "ONE" piece of bread per person and if you dare to request more they charge. It was three of us and only gave us 3 slices of cold bread which is fine, but when finally our food came out and I asked for a little more bread the rude waitress said there a charge. I asked the bus boy twice and he kept saying yes yes with nothing ever happening. The food is very expensive and you don't even get pasta with the chicken Parmesan which had a terrible tomato sauce on top. This dish was not worth $25 at all. Come on!! Pasta is cheap and so is bread can't make your meals better. Not worth the $130 bill for 3 people and no extra bread, no pasta. That an expensive lunch bill and we didn't even have any drinks. The waitress never came to see how was everything, she was totally dismissive and just sitting with the owner on a different table. Not a good Italian restaurant at all. Rude and cheap people. The menu is classic plus they have many specials including vegetarian and seafood. There's a long wine list plus many classic wines by the glass and Italian beers. I enjoyed the house montepulciano.
