How did I just find out there is a Little Italy in the Bronx (Belmont)! So what better way to learn about a neighborhood than to eat at a mom and pop restaurant. The restaurant has been around since 1927. I love how they have a cute black and white family portrait on the menu. Seeing the exposed brick walls and the paintings, gave me a very homey vibe. And given their generous portions I felt like I was invited to a family dinner at an Italian family house. We ordered: Complimentary sliced baguette Cold Antipasto Veal & Chicken Rollatini Combo** ( Stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella in marsala wine and mushroom sauce) Veal Pietro** (Potatoes, peas, and prosciutto in mushroom sauce) Veal Ann & Tony's** (Topped with prosciutto and mozzarella, sauteed in white wine sauce with mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and olives) Gnocchi (Stuffed with potato, topped with marinara) **Came with a complimentary penne pasta. After our annual trip to the NY Botanical Garden Train Show, we make it a tradition to have lunch in nearby Little Italy of the Bronx along Arthur Ave. This year, I selected Ann & Tony's, a 5 generation family run restaurant. We started with slices of crusty Italian bread with EVOO for dipping. For appetizers, we had Stuffed Mushrooms (4) and baked Clams Casino (6). Portions run on the small side for the price though. Ask for more bread if you want to sop up the tasty sauces. My Veal Marsala was only 2 pieces, but was smothered in mushrooms and came with a side of rigatoni marinara. The marsala wine sauce was excellent. The rest of the family were pretty satisfied with their dishes. The specials were a good choice and all the meat dishes came with rigatoni on the side. My sister's & brother's Chicken Garden specials had plenty of vegetables on top of the sautéed scallopinied chicken breasts. My wife's Chicken Ann & Tony looked very good topped with mozzarella, prosciutto, artichokes & olives. My niece had the Rigatoni with Broccoli Rabe & Sausage, my other favorite which would have been my second choice. There is also a children's menu which was perfect for my grandnieces. This was such a lovely spot, and the decor made our group feel like we were transported to Italy. We had the place mostly to ourselves on a leisurely Saturday afternoon. There was a cozy and welcoming ambiance. We were served complimentary sesame bread and rustic bread, paired with addicting olive oil and blend of flavorful spices, which made for the perfect combination. I ordered the Veal Columbo, which was melt in your mouth delicious! This was served with spaghetti in marinara sauce. The Veal was dipped in egg batter, topped with prosciutto, mozzarella, and tomato, in a creamy brandy sauce. Meat was delightfully tender, while all the ingredients were well seasoned and worked beautifully together. I especially enjoyed the meat with melty mozzarella in wonderfully rich, savory sauce. Service was solid. Our waitress was friendly and everything came out in a timely manner. Prices were super reasonable. We all had a great afternoon dining here. Stopped in on a Sunday after finding them online. The restaurant was big and decorated for the holidays. The staff were very nice and kind. The bread was delicious as well as the penne vodka. They had holiday drink specials and I had the Merry Berry Breeze mocktail and it was very good. We shared bruschetta which also was delicious. Prices were reasonable. We'd spent a glorious day at the New York Botanical Garden's Mexican Modernism orchid show when we realized we were ravenous. NYBG's cafe was packed, with a long line around the corner. We sighed, but then we remembered that the Bronx's wonderful Little Italy--Arthur Avenue--was nearby. First restaurant we spotted: Ann & Tony's, with a sign saying 5 generations (since 1927). We were hooked--and what a great experience it was. Excellent Italian bread, the kind you just don't get anymore, served with a Sicilian olive oil with herbs. Followed by a superb caprese we all shared. I had linguine with white clam sauce--so much that I took a large portion home for that night's dinner. Had high expectations going in; we've never been disappointed on Arthur Avenue before and this place has been around forever. Our water was warm (no ice) and the waitress only filled 2 of the 3 glasses and needed to be prodded regarding the third. The bottle of wine the hubby selected they were out of. The second option the waitress just poured without letting one of us taste to make sure we liked. My lasagna was almost cold; seemed like some cheese had been melted on top but it wasn't warmed all the way through. The service was slow and lacking throughout. She didn't come back after dropping the bill at the table to the point where my son had to go up to the bar where she was hanging out and submit it so that we could continue on with our evening. I'd say you lost us which is unfortunate since our son is living there in Fordham grad housing so we frequent the area often. Don't rest on a reputation of longevity but rather make a conscious effort to provide the kind of service and food Little Italy is known for. read more

We stopped at Arthur Ave. for Madonia Brothers Bakery early on a Sunday. Walking the neighborhood as we usually do, we decided impulsively to have an early lunch at Ann & Tony's. We grew up in the Bronx knew of its history. I had not been there for many years. It was a big disappointment. The food was not good. Rigatoni with Broccoli Rabe and sausage was tasteless. The pasta was reheated like many restaurant do, but it had been allowed to dry out after parboiling so the ends of some pieces were not cooked at all. There was very little oil, no garlic that we could see and no flavor. We sent it back. The Ann & Tony veal dish was a little better, but very bland. It looked rich but had no taste except for a couple of olives that tasted old. Not rancid, but sour and off. Service was mediocre. Bus boy tried hard but didn't have the skill or proper training or personality for the job. Our server only went through the motions. The hostess was very nice. After we got home I checked the Yelp reviews and I see that a lot of people had the same experience as we did. I'm only writing this review in case the family still cares about their reputation and their customers' experience. God Bless the memories and good luck in the future. Feeding tourists is OK if that's what you want to do, but these Italian American Bronxites won't be back any time soon. read more

The food is consistently delicious at Ann & Tony's. I have been a fan since my days at Fordham! Made a trip to the orchid show and had to walk over for a bite to eat after. We started off with some toasted seeded bread and an amazing olive oil that had infused herbs and garlic in it that was so delicious we asked if they sold it, and they do!! I had the eggplant parmesean, and my friends had pasta in a clam sauce and chicken piccata. Everyone enjoyed their meals thoroughly. Went hete for 1st time, saw good reviews on google. Should have looked on yelp. Family ordered chicken carbonara, veal parmigiano and a pizza. The waitress was attentive, brought our water, delicious bread with a dipping oil. Then the food came out in less than 10 minutes, and thats when it went downhill. The carbonara had chunks of onions, chunks of bacon, the sauce was watery and the chicken was white and looked raw. Had no flavor except of chicken and it was warm not hot. In my opinion, these things were cooked separately, put on a plate and microwaved. The pizza was a piece of italian bread with sauce and a big hunk of melted cheese. It was soggy, which if it was baked it would have been crunchy, again premade and then microwaved in my opinion. The veal was no different than costco frozen food and the pasta with marinara tasted from a can. Ive had better food at olive garden. First time dining here. It was just OK. Got the breaded artichoke appetizer. Didn't appear to be fresh artichoke, complete with the long stem (like one might get at an Italian restaurant). Seemed more like artichoke out of a jar, smothered in bread crumbs. Tasted good but...nothing high-end. Bread was good. Clearly authentic, classic, fresh Italian bread. Came with a flavored olive oil for dipping. Tasty. Got a glass of Montepulciano. Good. For entree, got the manicotti. Very average. Not delicate. Not 'sublime' (like a good manicotti would often be). Almost a bit dry, so all the more reason for me to need more sauce than was provided me. Also, while most of the staff I saw there were wearing masks, at least one was not. Against my better judgement we sat down and only 2 other tables had guests. Servers were not attentive, could never find them even though place was empty. The chicken parmigiana & the baked ziti were absolutely terrible. I started eating prior to my husband & son. I bursted out with, "this is awful". My husband looked perplexed because we were eating Italian on Arthur Ave & I never complain about food in the north. He & my son each tried their chicken. It was edible but less palatable than a cafeteria meal. The spaghetti was absolutely horrific. The sauce for all 3 meals looked and tasted like a can of tomato sauce was opened, heated in the microwave and poured on the top of the food. It had zero spices & was completely terrible. We looked at the reviews at that point. It was then that I took ownership for the abysmal meal. A 3 star rating for an Italian restaurant in Bronx Little Italy! I didn't look prior because we have never had a bad meal in the neighborhood & believed we could never go wrong. We wasted our money for a Lyft from Times Square to Arthur Ave & then from there to the Yankee game. We could've taken the subway, gotten a hot dog prior to or at the game. This place had been in business for 93 years 5 generations! They prepare the food the same way for all these years. I ate here about 25 years ago and loved it! I like this place very much. The food is very much like homemade - not exactly Mario Batali but straightforward, fresh and well done. Hot antipasto plate includes mozzarella wrapped in toast, eggplant, stuffed mushroom, calamari and shrimp. Pretty skimpy tho and the calamari was mushy - prob was frozen. Whole plate not too bad but had much better. Linguini with white clams was good, skimpy again on clams tho and broccoli rabe side nice and fresh, not overcooked. Lousy wine list and surprisingly expensive bottles - by glass mediocre selections but reasonable. Nothing terrible. Best thing here is friendly staff. The Chianti and the bread were excellent, the appetizers very good: stuffed artichoke hearts and clams casino. My friend had Veal Marsala which she liked. I ordered a dish called Shrimp Capri, however, the waiter did not apparently hear me properly and he brought me out Shrimp Scampi which was disappointing as I was looking forward to what I ordered. I did not send it back because I didn't want to wait for the correct dish to be cooked as I would have gotten it when my friend was finished with her meal. So I just ate the Shrimp Scampi which doesn't thrill me and was just average. We had Tirimisu for dessert which was outstanding. No one ever refilled my water glass although one of the waiters did come over to the table to ask if we needed anything else before my water was gone. They also came and started to remove food before I was totally finished. There were two waiters and I told one of them what happened with the Shrimp Capri so it wouldn't happen with someone else, and he rudely replied "I'm not the one who took your order." He did not convey anything to the other waiter. I really wanted to like Ann & Tony's. With their history, their personality, and their overall caring for their customers, they have a great background. But the food just wasn't that great. My friend and I braved a snowstorm from the Fordham road train station, but that didn't deter us. Their bread was excellent (From Addeo's, of course), the olive oil dip was good, and the salad they gave was basic but it was free, so it was a nice touch. The main courses weren't anything special at all. My friend had the Veal Parm, which was ok overall. Sauce was ok, veal quality was ok, cheese was ok, etc. My dish was Chicken Cardinale which didn't fare as well. The proscuitto and cheese were good, but thats a given on Arthur Ave; however, the chicken was poor quality, there wasn't that much of it, the peppers were ok, and the sauce wasn't anything special. The sauce we got on the sides of pasta wasok, but it lacked flavor. I give this place an extra star because of how cheap it was (especially if you use the coupons from their website), but Ann & Tony's isn't a place that should be a priority for anyone to visit based on what I experienced. However, I will probably give it another shot eventually. read more

I watched Ann & Tony's on the CNBC show Consumed - the real restaurant business - and the owners, staff were such characters that I had to pay them a visit. I been to other places I seen on reality TV and most of the time I am disappointed. The people portrayed on TV are not there, or the entire show was obviously staged for TV. Not here! What I saw on TV was exactly what I saw in person. The entire staff was there and in rare form. The owners were really cool, and authentic. With that said, I recommend you watch the show Consumed, and definitely pay Ann & Tony's a visit. I ordered chicken parm, what can you say about chicken parm? Chicken cheese and sauce lol. But what I can say is that we now live in the era of Corporate Restaurants, so it is a pleasure when you order the same dish as your friend and it comes out slightly different. Perhaps a little more sauce, a bit bigger, little less cheese.... That is the true magic of Ann & Tony's. The chef is not following the strict guidelines of the corporate cookbook. He is serving up food, the same way he serves it to his family. I started my meal with the Triple Shot Espresso Martini (as seen on TV) and it was delicious. Wow! I could of had five more.
