    Fried chicken and cornbread

This place gunna kill me, y'all. Absolutely annihilated my vegetarian, low cholesterol diet. I should have known what I was getting into when every meal comes with a free sweet tea. Its a wonderful Baton Rouge food experience: all the delicious southern soul and none of the pomp and pretentiousness of the local places downtown or in mid city. I totally forgot I was a teacher on spring break and instead ate like I was a construction worker coming off a job. Bury me with the rice and gravy. All Hail the Stockyard Cafe.

I travel all over the world with my job. Every now and then you run across a little gem of a place to have a good, southern home cooked meal. Here it is! Probably one of the top three cafes in the county imho. All of their food is absolutely amazing. Everyone treats you like family, and you almost feel like you're at your grandma's house for Sunday dinner. All puns and jokes aside, this place is as good as you will find anywhere in the country. Oh, if the name puzzles you, don't let it. It's part of an actual stockyard.

Must be good if law enforcement frequents the place

So glad I found this spot. This is comfort food that hits the spot. I really enjoyed the food and service both were equally awesome. The Liver and onions over mashed potatoes with Lima Beans, cucumber salad, cornbread and sweet tea were delicious. The ladies behind the counter enjoy their jobs it would seem. The prices can't be beat either, all that for $12.00.

Some of the best plate lunches in town... especially when they have fried chicken! It's the 3rd best fried chicken I've ever had, behind only Gus's and Uncle Lou's in Memphis. Add some candied yams, rice & gravy, spaghetti & cheese, cornbread & cake with a sweet tea and you have a heckuva meal.

Very great food and helpful customer service. Would definitely recommend to others who are looking for good spots to eat lunch in. You also get tons of food for the price that you pay and it fills you up!

One of the lesser known places in Baton Rouge. I've heard whispers for years about the "best fried chicken in Baton Rouge". Sure, it's a hassle to get to, but it actually isn't. There's daily specials (see picture), everything is setup Piccadilly style. All around, it's the best plate lunch I've had in Baton Rouge. The scenery is even more impressive in that there are hundreds of cows traded in the hours before lunch.

Home cooked meals. A conversational crowd with southern charm. Long lines but they move fast. Good place for plate lunches to geaux.

This is a historic building that was once a bank, and it retains its historic murals as well as other features. It's definitely a place to take someone visiting or whom you would like to impress! The menu likewise is impressive, it's created by serious chefs. It includes everything from a simple burger to some fine steaks. I tend to go for the appetizers and small plates. However, they also have some quality seafood as well as Cajun specialties (including a good gumbo). There are regular specials, and the "Soup of the Moment" is also worth trying. They have particularly good charcuterie boards! The service is also great, the staff are dressed all in black, and there are white tablecloths. It's a near fine dine, but not as stuffy as one might expect. Definitely a place worth trying in Downtown Baton Rouge!

If you get the chance, don't miss their Restaurant Week menu. They always go above and beyond, and this year was no exception. The quail, stuffed with boudin and served over red beans, was incredibly juicy and packed with flavor. It was one of the standout dishes I've had in quite a while. For appetizers, we had the cachapas with pork which were delicious. Recommended app for sure! My wife had an Indian curry with cabbage, purple rice, chick peas and spinach-wow!!!!!! Probably the creamiest tasting curry ever! You could add a protein but wifey went with the vegetarian option and it was great! It wasn't perfect bc there were some chick peas that weren't cooked all the way and were crunchy I went with the mussels in a pesto cream sauce with potatoes and it was sooooo delicious!!! Again not perfect as some mussels had that sandy/gritty taste which I didn't like it most of the them were fine. The ambience here is great!
