    Fried chicken and cornbread

This place gunna kill me, y'all. Absolutely annihilated my vegetarian, low cholesterol diet. I should have known what I was getting into when every meal comes with a free sweet tea. Its a wonderful Baton Rouge food experience: all the delicious southern soul and none of the pomp and pretentiousness of the local places downtown or in mid city. I totally forgot I was a teacher on spring break and instead ate like I was a construction worker coming off a job. Bury me with the rice and gravy. All Hail the Stockyard Cafe.

I travel all over the world with my job. Every now and then you run across a little gem of a place to have a good, southern home cooked meal. Here it is! Probably one of the top three cafes in the county imho. All of their food is absolutely amazing. Everyone treats you like family, and you almost feel like you're at your grandma's house for Sunday dinner. All puns and jokes aside, this place is as good as you will find anywhere in the country. Oh, if the name puzzles you, don't let it. It's part of an actual stockyard.

Must be good if law enforcement frequents the place

So glad I found this spot. This is comfort food that hits the spot. I really enjoyed the food and service both were equally awesome. The Liver and onions over mashed potatoes with Lima Beans, cucumber salad, cornbread and sweet tea were delicious. The ladies behind the counter enjoy their jobs it would seem. The prices can't be beat either, all that for $12.00.

Some of the best plate lunches in town... especially when they have fried chicken! It's the 3rd best fried chicken I've ever had, behind only Gus's and Uncle Lou's in Memphis. Add some candied yams, rice & gravy, spaghetti & cheese, cornbread & cake with a sweet tea and you have a heckuva meal.

Very great food and helpful customer service. Would definitely recommend to others who are looking for good spots to eat lunch in. You also get tons of food for the price that you pay and it fills you up!

One of the lesser known places in Baton Rouge. I've heard whispers for years about the "best fried chicken in Baton Rouge". Sure, it's a hassle to get to, but it actually isn't. There's daily specials (see picture), everything is setup Piccadilly style. All around, it's the best plate lunch I've had in Baton Rouge. The scenery is even more impressive in that there are hundreds of cows traded in the hours before lunch.

Home cooked meals. A conversational crowd with southern charm. Long lines but they move fast. Good place for plate lunches to geaux.

We had a wonderful breakfast at Simple Joe's Cafe in Baton Rouge!…read more I ordered the shrimp and grits, and it was absolutely delicious--creamy, well-seasoned grits topped with perfectly cooked shrimp and a flavorful sauce that tied everything together beautifully. My husband had an omelette with peppers and bacon, and he really enjoyed it. It was fluffy, generously filled, and cooked just right, with great smoky flavor from the bacon and a nice kick from the peppers. The service was friendly, the food came out quickly, and the whole experience felt warm and welcoming. Definitely a great local spot for a hearty, satisfying meal.

It's Simple as the name suggests…read more Nothing fancy or elaborate about this place. It's a small restaurant with a small open kitchen and a small dining room where you stand in line to place your order, get a number to put on your table, and servers bring the food to your table when it's ready. So, if you're looking for a large upscale, elegant restaurant with elaborate food presentations, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a simple, quick and delicious meal, Simple Joe Café is for you. The menu consists of a wide variety of breakfast favorites, but the menu is not intimidating and easy to read and order from. Simple enough. When my family and I arrived, the small dining room was packed with a few open tables and about six other customers in line waiting to place their order. On Saturday and Sunday, you cannot sit at the open tables or hold the tables until you have placed your order and given a tent number. At that point, the servers will help you find a table to accommodate your party. The employees do a very good job of clearing and turning over the tables to make sure everyone is seated and able to enjoy their meal in a timely manner. I am not a fan of breakfast food and normally don't eat breakfast, so I only had coffee while my family enjoyed their meal, so the food quality part of this review is based on what they described as they were eating. They each ordered Joe's Number One Breakfast Combos which came with two eggs, choice of meat and pancakes and they shared an order of hashbrown and a side of grits. The food came out quickly. They stated everything was fresh, prepared and cooked as requested, the food tasted very good and enjoyed every bite. Of course, the coffee was hot, and fresh and the service was fast and friendly. The relaxed ambience and decor add to the unique character of the restaurant. Date of Visit: Saturday 05-16-26 Simple Joe Café | 3057 Government St, Baton Rouge, LA
