Great food with friendly service at reasonable prices. I often stop by nearby El Molcajete for happy hour, but this place is actually a little nicer and has a little better food. The husband and wife team from Mexico City and Ecuador run the show here. The thing I live the most is they have a spicy light green cream salsa that I usually only have found in Lima and in Peruvian Restaurants in South America or Florida. It is soooo good. Worth a trip to the bar for drinks and chips with it. That said I've had the Fajitas twice now and they have been large in scale and very much sizzling. Sizzling has surprisingly become a lost "art" at some places. Don puts it on the plate though. I also love that they use Lodge American made cast iron for the service. It beats Chinese made products where you don't know what chemicals may have been used. They have a lot of TVs they apparently pay for. That's no small expense for this size of a place. Interestingly they have Keno here. This is a staple of the restaurant/bar industry on the West Coast. It's practically the only way to make the numbers work. I rarely see this in Atlanta and I give the owners credit for providing this game and apparently some other lottery products. I'll be back more often. We love coming to Don Bonachón, a cozy, family-owned restaurant. I always order the cheesy rice...it's absolutely delicious This time, I tried the shrimp and fish ceviche. It was very tasty, although I think it could use just a bit more lime for that extra kick. My daughter had the quesa birria taco, and it was super flavorful ,she loved it. About the same as last time. Sunday night not very busy at all. We were sat right away, our waitress was over quickly to get our drink order and brought chips and salsa. We ordered the enchiladas verde and the taco salad with chicken. Mine had a hot plate but the interior of the enchiladas were luke warm and her taco salad had too much dressing that made the taco shell soggy. Given this is our second mediocre experience, we will likely find another restaurant to frequent. Oddly the place was empty at 12:00 on a Monday, where was everyone? I can only guess that the local go somewhere else. The salsa tasted like runny ketchup, no flavor, no spice. I ordered the steak fajita nachos (no Peppers) for $10.95. It was a small order with one small slice of tomato, tiny bit of sour cream, cheese dip, onions, a few worm looking pieces of meat and lettuce. The steak was tough and stringy. Holy crap was that bad! I've never, ever send food back. And I asked that they please charge me. But this was inedible. It's like they used Old El Paso for the sauce. Meat has absolutely no taste. Sat outside since we had our dog with us. Staff was very accommodating. Menu featured a number of authentic Mexican items that you don't see at the chain restaurants. Having tried several Mexican food places in Atlanta, I can report that.... I'm a Tex-Mex guy. A man can only eat so much cheese. What I can say sets this place apart is the service. It's not very good. The staff is great, but there are so few of them. The ones there are don't look to check on the customers, they walk by without a care. Our meals came so far apart that my girlfriend was done eating when mine finally arrived. Being that this is one of three within two miles from our house, we come here rarely just to change up the ambiance. If you're driving by, you can head in. If you miss the turn, stay cool. I liked the chicken soup and the grilled shrimp quesadilla. I didn't like the guacamole and wasn't crazy about the rice. JA didn't like her steak bowl bc she mixed it all up. It could have been the guacamole in it. She liked my soup and rice though. The boys ate up their steak quesadillas. M ate all his rice and fries, but JO did not eat his rice and black beans. K didn't like his mild hot wings or fries. I think the wings were too crispy and hard to him. But our bill was only $48.59 before tip for 5 people, so maybe we will try this place again. I got chicken stuffed poblano peppers. I was hoping they'd have a firm roasted exterior, but they were soggy. And the chicken was chewy and stringy. Other than that it was good. The bad reviews are mostly right, but we tried it anyway. I'm not sure why they just can't seem to get their act together, but they don't seem to be making an effort to improve yet. The one saving grace is their chicken tortilla soup! It's delicious! Somehow with the complaints of all the other bland and flavorless items and now our own experience with utterly flavorless chips, salsa, beef tacos, chicken tacos and burritos (which we ordered assuming at least their basics would be good)... we were proven completely wrong. Of our orders, it's only the chicken tortilla soup that deserves any good comments and it truly deserves excellent comments! The service was however insanely slow. We were quite literally 1, of 2 tables with customers. Our server was very nice though and any delay seemed to be coming from the kitchen. They have a pretty big menu, but with the food quality and flavor issues I would suggest rethinking their menu size and focus on quality. Surely they didn't purposely plan to open a restaurant like this. As you read below and if you're like me and are still hoping for the best... remember that sometimes these reviews can give them a constructive nudge. So, you have a really nice restaurant. The food and the service are not good and that's a problem. The really sad thing is I can't base an entire restaurant review around really good soup. This just makes me sad. Went this past weekend. Clean, friendly staff, food was hot. Authentic mexican. Chips were served hot and fresh (corn tortillas). salsa was delish. And the beer was ICE COLD!! Ordered the fish tacos. Wife had the chicken tortilla soup. Both were very good. The fish tacos (serving of 3) were served piping hot! Loved that! Big piece of fish and a zippy sauce served on the side. Some people prefer a slaw dressing (i do like that) but this was good as well. it had some green peppers and a little green chilis in it. Was really good. We liked this not only because it was clean, but we could carry on a conversation without yelling. very nice waiting staff. If you want watered down sour cream and store bought guacamole this is your place. They gave me less than one bite of guacamole. I asked for more and told them I wanted sour cream that wasn't watered down. I than got a bowl of liquid sour cream and guacamole worse than something Taco Bell would serve. The chips and salsa also tasted store bought. The only thing good here was the drinks. We went on a Saturday night around 8pm and it was slow but still took a while to get the drinks and the food. The servers sat at the table next to us rolling silverware and complaining about how slow it was. I read reviews saying this place was authentic and amazing but I'm convinced those were family and friends or someone who was too drunk to taste the food. There was nothing remotely authentic or good. I even heard someone else saying they would rather go to the liquor store and Kroger which should of told me than to leave instead of waisting $50!! Went for late dinner with son after lacrosse game. Quick and friendly service. Ambience is a bit nicer, more intimate than other local similar style restaurants. Being a seafood guy, I went with the shrimp cocktail. Would have liked more veggies and cilantro - it seemed a little watered down, but great size and texture on shrimp. I really wanted to like this place. Sadly, it is awful. I will first say the atmosphere is nice and I enjoyed the brightness of the space. We started out with cheese dip which was good. I ordered the steak dinner burrito and my husband ordered the launch a. He said there was zero seasoning to it. When my food arrived I did not get beans nor did my burrito have peppers and onions. I sent it back and 5 mins later got a burrito with steak, onions and smothered in cheese. The rice and beans were not hot and the steak had no flavor and was very fatty. So disappointed. So we have had a good experience food wise the few times we have been. We just moved last summer into the area. Last night we popped in a bit after 5 for a quick dinner on our way home. After a few minutes, I noticed two of the TV's over the bar area had a couple of videos playing that were so inappropriate, to be frank I was embarrassed. A family was just finishing their meal in the booth next to us and had two boys about 4 & 6. They were locked into staring at all the women with practically nothing on, (certainly nothing covering their backside while they twerked in a circle in this man's face.) Several employees were sitting and standing around with the only two men seated at the bar who as well could not take their eyes off the screen. My husband returned from the restroom and just shook his head. We have taken our three year old grand children here and never felt in any way that this was not a place that we should not have children around. I am a fair person and will give this place another chance, maybe this was a super weird not normal thing. But if we ever have this kind of experience again we will never come back. We wanted to eat Mexican and had no interest in whatever that was all about. To the men at the bar and the owner or manager who was responsible for the tv's, go to the strip club please.
