I have lived in La Jolla the past 2 years and have given Don Bravos multiple chances to turn my opinion around but unfortunately it is the same result. I ordered food for the family over the phone and was told 25-30 min. I went down to pick up and ended up waiting an additional 30 minutes. That is a total of 1 hour for a family of 4 for basic Mex. food. I understand things happen but this is the 3rd time now. I don't know if they wait to put the order in until you pay??? If that is the case I am happy to pay over the phone. This makes no sense. I was told that the Kitchen was having a problem earlier and is a little behind. Again I totally get it things happen. Not 3x within 6 months. There is a bigger problem here. read more

Two words: SHRIMP BURRITO Love this place. It's right in the heart of Bird Rock, right next to the beach. Mostly everything on the menu is awesome, fresh and authentic. I say mostly as I haven't tried everything yet. It's way casual and you can't help but make friends with the staff. The prices are reasonable. Chips. Salsa. Guacamole Quesadilla. Carne Asada. Lobster. Beer fish taco. Happy Hour. DO IT!!!! Complaints -- not open as early or as late as I would prefer. 3 a.m. carne asada burritos aren't available here, damn the devil, but still, worth going to when they are open. So many good memories at Don Bravo...the margaritas...the sparkly tablecloths...walking to the cliffs nearby...drinking too much horchata. Definitely go here and make your own memories :-) But seriously. When you go...get the lobster burrito or the shrimp burrito. I'm so glad I found this place biking through one day, I take the family back on the reg now. Nice view of ocean in Bird Rock, nice staff, good fish tacos, good chips and salsa bar, various Mexican dishes. I dig the carnitas tacos myself. The kids dig the rolled tacos. 5-star because I only meant to feedback to support the business, they eventually resolve the issue: my shrimp burrito came out not hot, cheese was not melting. Talked to one of their staff and he said "that's how we make it" (?) and had to show him shrimp was dry, not hot, cheese is still cold; and they resolved this: my burrito was hot and juicy. Yet, we notice the size of the Burrito came out smaller, I guess because all costs are higher now. Yet I'd rather pay a couple dollars more and have things the way they used to be. Disclaimer - this review is for the California Burrito because that is the only thing I ever get here. Why? It's the best. I've tried others. They suck. Come here and order one. You won't be disappointed. Tuesdays are super busy but you can call ahead for take out if you wish. Or just come on another night. They offer table service in the evening or you can just order at the counter. Someone said they don't offer free chips & salsa but I feel like that might be false if it's evening "dinner service". Anyway...I don't know why I took so long to write a review for this place. I've been coming here for YEARS and before that, the one in PB. It's deeeelish. Last two times I've come here I've waited 35-40 minutes for food AFTER ordering. ... that's two times in a row about 2 months apart, and both times the place was not that busy. Not sure how much business they're losing due to wait times but can't imagine it's a small number. Their salsa cups are about the size of a thimble so you have to get like 10 of them. read more

The cashier guy couldn't have been more of a negative influence towards new customers, the first time I ordered the tacos were great but he was very rude and short with us.I decided to come back, and ordered more for taco Tuesday via a phone order for more dollar fish tacos, he tried to charge me 14$ for four tacos and he said I ordered the wrong ones when I specially said I want the dollar fish tacos again, he said I had to pay for these first to get the dollar ones, I will never go back. I have come to this place for 5 years. This is my third bad meal here. I am DONE! They are very slow, so I called in the order. When I arrived, she had not given the order to the cook. The fish was cut up in little chunks. It tasted like chicken. I showed it to the owner, and he said this is how they do it. That is a LIE. They usually serve a fillet. I did not argue. It did not taste or feel like fish. Also, he did not honor Taco Tuesday, like every other place in San Diego. Not sure what the mystery meat is, but now I have an upset stomach as I write this. I will never go here again. There are better fish taco places. I just go here out of convenience, but no more. The owner does not deserve my business or yours. Our second time here. Overall still like this place but tonight was a bit disappointing. Food prep time was slow, though not terribly. They ran out of the milder salsa for chip dipping. Ice machine ran out of ice (and it was not hot). We each had a 2-taco plate. Scallop tacos were excellent, calamari and mahi-mahi tacos were good. Beans and rice were good. Came in with my girlfriend on a Friday place was. Filled but not too busy. We got our food to go so we could eat at the beach. I got Don Bravo burrito and a crab taco which were both really good and my GF got a crab burrito that she ended having to get because they no longer had lobster. She loved it. Never fails to satisfy. The meat actually tastes like it's been cooked and seasoned. One of the best crunchy tacos I've had! Most crunchy tacos at other places look like mushed meat; for these you can actually tell they use nice chuck roast. read more

I love the fish tacos. For 99¢ it's unbeatable. The fish is fresh and the tortillas don't fall apart. This location is nice because it is so close to the beach, it has it's own parking lot in back so you don't have to scramble to find parking in bird rock, and it's near the residential area so those of us who live nearby can walk here at any time of day. The inside is very spacious and clean. Has televisions with sports on and many tables for groups of friends to eat together inside. This is the place people who move away to the east coast dream of. The carne asada fry burritos the size of your head! I love the quesadillas, chimichangas, chili relleno (has delicious sauce on top). They rarely mess up the orders and are very friendly workers. Famous for the 99 cent fish tacos but I don't think it lives up to the hype (other than it's cheap) of being featured in magazines such as WHERE and having such a high rating on Yelp. First of all, although it's more authentic than the fish taco stand at PB, I don't think it's authentic Mexican fish tacos. I'm not Mexican, but when I have tacos in Mexico, they don't have cheese and white sauce, and they DO have guacamole. Well, the fish tacos here do NOT have guacamole (75 cent upgrade for a small dollop) and has grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese and white sauce flooding the whole thing. They messed up my order twice (made a small taco instead of a large taco - but they gave me an extra small taco to make up for it, and they made a taco with cheese when I specifically requested no cheese, so they just took it all off with their fingers, leaving a few strands) so I guess I'm just unlucky. Parking lot in the back, restrooms on the outside (requiring their key), and within walking distance to the beach. Not worth the drive specifically to come here (which is what I did, since they were featured in WHERE), but if you're in the area already, it's a pretty cheap stop. read more

The other day I saw they had a sign up that said: BEST FISH TACOS IN SAN DIEGO 2014! Done. I was finally going to try this place. I had to know. I got a battered fish taco, and a grilled mahi fish taco. Neither were anything I'd come back for. They were pretty bland, and the mahi one tasted.... fishy. We end up going to this place quite often because it is walking distance from the house. It is hard to get a real good score out of me for mexican food because of the abundance of mexican food places in San Diego, can't give them all 5 stars. This place is nice because the menu has a lot of options and they have delicious margaritas. The atmosphere is really laid back None of the menu options are extraordinary but I have never had anything that has tasted bad here. I love the fact that they have wheat tortillas. Plus, we also order their chile relleno which is fluffy and loaded with cheese and sauce. One taco plate, one side order of relleno and it feeds two people. Yes the prices are good, and my blended peach margarita was amazing! I ordered two fish tacos. They were decent, nothing special... actually a little bland with a bit too much cabbage. My favorite burrito place in San Diego. Unlike the other Mexican fast food places in San Diego ( Rigoberto, Cotixan) that serve sloppy burritos, Don Bravo focuses on quality. Their burritos are very clean and fresh. I suggest ordering their California burrito and getting a frozen Margarita. Also they have an excellent sauces/sides bar. Another bonus is if you sit outside you can enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean and palm trees. read more

Stumbled upon this place after taking the bus to meet my boyfriend in La Jolla. It is the cutest authentic taco shop/ restaurant. It is very close to the water so you can see the ocean and the waves crashing through the big glass windows inside. There's a cute little outdoor patio can you sit at facing the ocean too. The women who worked there and rang me up was so sweet. I felt very comfortable and relaxed just sitting down, reading and enjoying a beer. Once my boyfriend got here I got a cheese enchilada and he got the California burrito(which is a big size). We both lovedddd our food! All in all the food was great, service fantastic, prices perfect and the location with the amazing view was more than ideal! Happy to give this place 5 stars. A great find! read more

Do NOT get the seafood taco. Ordered a "lobster" taco via Postmates and I got some kind of scrambled crab situation with a THICK coat of what was likely sour cream on top. Went to have a couple of street tacos here for a snack after waiting last night for half an hour at The Taco Stand. No comparison! This place beats them hands down! Can't wait to go back again with our daughter-in-law. Each taco was served in two tortillas and had enough stuffing to split with my husband. The fresh cilantro and lime on the salsa bar was an added plus. This place is walking distance from their home and just thinking about the many meals we can enjoy before heading back to Florida makes me smile! read more
