This place is GOOD! We came here on a late Thurs afternoon and the seating outside was occupied and there were a few people ordering inside. Lots of options so you can easily get overwhelmed. We ordered the shrimp plate with diablo, street tacos with carne asada and beer battered fish, beef taco and the surf and turf taco. Unfortunately no pictures since our phones were dead. The street tacos were simply delicious!! The carne asada was the best but the fish was also good. Among the regular sized tacos, I thought the shredded beef was a little chewy so not very fond of it. The surf and turf was very good. The shrimp plate was hot. When we said we liked spicy, we had expected a more complex spicy flavor, not a straight up chilli pepper spice. The shrimp was good by itself but the sauce had to be diluted with the rice and beans. We will avoid that next time as it didn't do any favors in the bathroom either. Get the tacos. I have been coming here for nearly 30 years. It's a great little hole in the wall that seems perfectly out of place in a neighborhood that is filled with multi million dollar homes. The food is good and the salsa bar is excellent. I think what I really love about the place is how consistent it is. Same quality and taste for as long as I've been coming. They call out your number and you get up to pick up your order. Realized our side order of guacamole did not come with chips. . WUT? Couldn't the guy behind the counter tip us in on the no chips? Delicious! Because I wasn't super hungry, I ordered one mini fish taco and the churros. The mini fish taco is a perfect snack size; the fish is crispy and there is a nice balance. I also love the green chile sauce, adds a nice little kick to it. Churros are delicious! They are made fresh so they are nice and warm and covered with lots of cinnamon. I don't know why people don't' eat/talk about the churros, but I would recommend them. It honestly is a great place with a variety of options to grab a quick bite! My boyfriend took me here to show me his favorite California burrito. He wasn't kidding! This place had some solid food and drinks. I was a little skeptical at first because I don't trust him the most with these recommendations ;) but I'm glad I listened! The fries were extra crispy (which is awesome!!!!) and the burrito was stacked! The salsas added a nice finishing touch to it as well. We also got 2 mini tacos. I wanted to try the lobster and he got the smoke fish. Lobster was pretty good, can't lie about that. But the smoke fish really blew it out of the park!! That fish was actually smoked and had a nice crispy/crunchy/juicy texture to it. There was just enough sour cream/cheese/salsa and cabbage to even out the smokiness and just enough crunch to help with the soft tortilla. Food here was horrible. We came here with a friend who had raved about this place. My friend ordered the shrimp burrito which was expensive and only had 2 pieces of small shrimp in the burrito. Makes no sense to me since shrimp isn't that expensive to buy compared to beef. The service was horrible, we needed some cups for salsa and cilantro and we had to ask the lady with no smile behind the register for a few plastic cups (she only gave us one each), when we asked for another she gave us attitude.....really are you that stingy with your cups? Another friend ordered the nachos and the guacamole did not look nor taste like guacamole. The 99 cent Fried Beer Battered Fish Tacos are my favorite thing to get. They are the Street Taco size & are delivered with double shells, in case the one shell breaks through. The large piece of cod is breaded in a beer batter, then deep fried. Inside the fish is fresh off the boat tender. If you get the 99 cent Shredded Chicken or Beef Street Taco, you can actually make 2 tacos out of the 1 because they're piled high with Chicken & Beef. There are separate Ladies & Mens Bathrooms just outside the building on the porch overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just a block away. It's a one-room job, and was very clean on our visit. Hate to say it (because this restaurant has been one of our favorites for 40+ years), but Don Bravo's quality has slipped dramatically. Still the best chips in San Diego, though. I usually get (and love) the chicken fajita bowl with no rice and extra veggies, but my last three orders have been terrible. Dry, way overcooked chicken on two of them, and my most recent order had almost no chicken in it, virtually no black beans (but a lot of bean juice) and almost all peppers for vegetables. I've only complained once, but they made such a big deal about giving me a replacement bowl, that I haven't complained again. I'm so disappointed, but I'm going to have to say good-bye to an old friend. read more

Always have loved the food here but it's gotten painfully slow. We waited 27 min for food and there was no one in line when we got there. My tacos were cold the burrito tasted like boiled meat rather then carne asada. $45 for 2 people to eat and we only had 1 soda to drink ($4 for a can btw). Sadly after all these years I just had my last meal at Don Bravos. I've been eating here for 20 years, what a disappointment..... update: don't leave your review while still in the restaurant, they will take the time away from cooking to walk over and look at you and point at you as they read it and discuss the situation with each other. Why they didn't come talk to us I do not know, most business owner's try to make things right. They must get enough tourists business to disregard the locals who've kept them going all these years.
