So it's super important to know they are a cash only establishment . Who carries cash anymore ?! Growing up in Sd and spending summers in LJ you know this is the fish taco spot of all taco shops . I'm happy to report after many years this is still the fish taco spot of all taco shops . I like everything on their menu and their salsa bar is really good . They have hot carrots, onions , cabbage ,limes and 4 or 5 different great salsas to choose from . We really like their carne asada fries . The fries are cooked perfectly and they load them with nacho cheese , shredded cheese guacamole, sour cream , pico de gallo and delicious carne asada meat . They have fair prices and big portions . The only complaints I have are; even when you phone order a to go order they lag . So expect to wait for your food and make sure they give you forks and napkins if you plan on eating the food on the beach . This is the best taco shop in the area. read more

This place has been my go-to for over a decade and one of the 5 recommendations when someone asks me for the best Mexican spots in SD. That being said, this place has been going downhill over the past couple years and finally lost the goodwill they had built up over so many delicious California burritos. The problems started before we even got our food- Don Bravo's has never been known to have a quick kitchen, but the wait took over 50 minutes. It wasn't very busy either- it literally took 50 minutes to call about 10 orders. They gave us cold chips (that would've cost a couple dollars per bag) for waiting so long, but something is absolutely wrong with the kitchen. Did I mention the 3.5% credit card fee? 2 burritos and 2 fish tacos taking 50 minutes would be ok if the food was anywhere near what it used to be when I found this place, but that wasn't the case. The carne asada burrito was small - close to the size of one of their old mini burritos for you OG's. The tortilla was ok but overpowered the carne. The carne was bland and tasted like it may have been cooked for the lunchtime rush. The salsa also tasted like marinara sauce- very sweet and absolutely no fire. The arbol salsa used to be special and quite hot for my taste, but I was drinking it and couldn't even feel a tingle. All in all, this place used to be one of my favorites but now tastes exactly what you'd think a Mexican joint in Bird Rock run by gringos would taste like - bland, overpriced, and not really giving a shit about providing good service. If you're going to wait an hour to get your food, go down the street to Taco Stand and at least know you're getting a good burrito and spicy salsa. read more

Signal boost! This adorable taco shop has the best fried fish tacos around. Happy hour is from 3-6pm m-f and you can try their original fried fish taco for $1.49! Came here yesterday for a Carnitas burrito and a fish taco, the fish taco was pretty decent size and it was very delicious. The Carnitas burrito on the other hand wasn't the most appealing and it didn't taste the most satisfying, it appeared to be drenched in Greece & The meat didn't seem like It had time to properly dry out before It was put in the burrito. I've been going to Don Bravos since I was about 12 years old. My mother lived in SanDiego for two summers and this was the hot spot! I haven't been to Don Bravos in YEARS. I told my boyfriend we had to go when we were in Cali about a month ago and we spent maybe 30 minutes to figure out what the name of my favorite taco shop in La Jolla was. So glad we found it. This used to be one of my favorite taco spots 7-8 years ago. It's within walking distance of home, and I like to support local restaurants. In the past few years it's slipped down in my taco spot rankings. First, the manpower is not sufficient to handle the volume of orders so the wait times are just too long. I think it's fair to expect taco spots have to turnover food in under 15 minutes most of the time. This is regularly a long wait thanks to the to-go orders for sunset watchers over at Colima Park. But more importantly, where's the beef? They're over-filling the shredded beef with peppers and onions, probably to keep costs down. I find myself picking peppers and onions out of the plate just to get to the meat. I'm sure this review won't hurt their business, but it's just not what it used to be for me. read more

Can't beat this family owned place. Very close to the ocean, even has an ocean view from one of it's sides. Place has accommodating seats outside or inside (although can be tight given how much traffic this place gets from local customers. Parking can be tight given it's proximity to the ocean, but well worth the effort for what this small restaurant is. read more

The food is pretty good. Make the Burrito a "Supreme". Their Chile Rellenos are excellent, and the food truck they now have in the back has excellent Birria. The food used to be good a long time ago, but the last few years it has just gone down hill. I have no idea why I keep trying it out now and then because I'm always disappointed, but today is the last time. I ordered 4 potato rolled tacos to go. I got home and the melted cheese was in a small plastic container-microwaved??? There was a small amount of sour cream and a small amount of guacamole in two separate compartments in the tray and 4 rolled tacos that were naked, hard, and cold. I opened the plastic container of cheese and it just fell on the tacos like a lump. I took it back. Can't even eat it. They've hit the bottom of the barrel and they are very expensive. We were driving through La Jolla starving and saw "street tacos" in the window so immediately pulled in. It was GREAT! We got 4 street tacos and the cheese enchiladas. Came here for a quick snack. Cute little Mex place about 1 block from the ocean. Decor is nicer than your typical Mex food joint, they serve alcohol and they have happy hour M-F. I love how the outside patio overlooks the distant water, especially on a beautiful sunny day. Unfortunately, this is what made my visit worth coming. Ordered the beer-battered fish taco and lobster burrito. The taco had a bland and odd taste to it. I had to squeeze 2 limes for additional flavor. The lobster burrito would have been good, only if I had more than 1 piece of lobster in my half of the burrito. Disappointed... I was in the Bird Rock area today and came across this little Mexican restaurant and decided to give it a try. The restaurant is only doing takeout right now, but there was 1-2 small tables outside that you can sit. There is a small amount of staff working so they won't be that diligent to go and wipe down/disinfect the tables as needed for safety precautions. Food was average, nothing to complain or rave about just your typical Mexican restaurant. I got a basic California burrito, I believe they are charging an extra $1.00 for carne asada and will not give extra salsa which boggles my mind! I don't know about you but I love salsa and usually need about 3-4 small containers for my burrito other than that no complaints! read more

My husband and I frequent Bahia Don Bravo quite often since it's close by, the food is good, and is one of the less expensive dining options in Bird Rock. We typically get the carne asada fries or the lobster burrito. The carne asada fries comes with guacamole, sour cream, salsa, shredded cheese, and queso (and carne asada and fries). The portion size is pretty generous; we typically will have leftovers. The lobster burrito is really tasty. The sauce is what makes this burrito delicious. It is on the smaller size for the price, so some may not think it is worth it...but we love it. The mild salsa tends to be too watery for my taste, so I don't usually get it, but really the lobster burrito doesn't need it. There have been times when our meals haven't been that great (i.e. lobster is overcooked), but that doesn't stop us from coming back. Overall, the pricing is a bit higher than most smaller Mexican food joints, but Bahia is more conducive to dining there - they serve alcohol, have a tv, provide table service, and happy hour. They do have outdoor seating as well. We do usually take our order to go and the wait can be pretty long, so if you are ordering take out, I'd recommend calling ahead. They also have a frequent buyer card (just ask them for it) where you can get a free meal (up to $5) after you get 10 stamps ($50). read more

I ordered a kids quesadilla with chicken and was charged $17 before tax. I questioned the manager why I was charged so much when a full size chicken quesadilla was listed for $14 on the menu. He said the chicken was an extra $7 on a kids quesadilla but not a regular quesadilla even though it's the same thing just cut in half. I love love LOVE this place! I love their fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, and burritos. At least for me, their fajitas and enchiladas come in huge portions. I can probably order one and be good for two meals. I recommend getting chicken as it's more flavorful than the beef, but the beef is still really good. A nice perk here is that they sell $0.99 fried fish tacos Monday through Thursday (between certain hours). Even if you miss the $0.99 fried fish tacos, they're still pretty cheap - about $2 which is bad at all. I wish their sauces were more spicy, but aside from that everything is amazing! If it wasn't too far from me, I would be coming here every day. There is private parking, bathrooms (which I haven't been to), indoor and outdoor seating. Also! I gave this place four tries before rating them hoping, each time, that my next experience would be better than the last. It didn't happen. I ordered a breakfast burrito with double bacon and extra crispy potatoes. It was a complete disgrace. The boiled potatoes are bland, unseasoned, and have no texture whatsoever. They might as well put mashed potatoes in the burrito. Terrible!! In addition, I had to open the burrito and dig thru the potatoes to find any reminisce of "double bacon". When I finally found a few slivers it looked like a single strip of bacon that was diced and thrown in near the bottom of the burrito. Did I say Terrible?? The worst part about this experience was that I spoke to the owner and told him before ordering that each of the past three times I ordered this burrito the potatoes were never crispy and the there wasn't enough bacon in it. He offered to deep fry them.....not a solution!!! Your grill person should know how to grill crispy potatoes. It's not astro psychics. He said they would grill them longer till crispy. Came here a few days ago on a run by work lunch and was so impressed I had to come back a few days later!! Man this is good food!!! I got a fish taco and a chicken tostada and my girlfriend had mini carne asada street tacos and ceviche. I'm not too sure on the fish taco schedule cause it seems to change but when I went on Monday it said $.99 10-4 and today (Sunday) it was $1.99... Either way, damn that is a good fish taco!! Horrible. Got food poisoning after eating their tacos that took over 30 minutes of wait time. They have a big yellow banner advertising $1.99 stree tacos including beef, pork, etc. At the register I was told they didn't have beef street taco so I ordered a regular size carne asada taco which they charged $5.50, yes, you read it right, FIVE DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS for a taco. The man taking my order was less than friendly. My meal choice, a surf & turf burrito special, was so-so at best. I asked for our chips (that came with the special) before our meal arrived to appease our hungry toddlers... they were unable to accommodate. What??? We're talking a bag of chips! I had to ask for a couple extra plates for the kids, a water cup and little cups for the salsa. This request was received with a less than a friendly response from a lady behind the counter. Great burritos, reasonable prices, and surprisingly good salsa. I was checking out some sights in the PB/Bird Rock area and decided to swing by Don Bravos around 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. I had expected a long wait given the timing, but there was only a handful in line and everything came out quick. No frills in the inside, though the rear seating has a (slight) view of the ocean in the distance. Cash only below $10: a drag, though understandable. Also, the rear parking lot was surprisingly open, given the area. Based on Yelp I tried the Carne Asada Burrito, which came with some chips. The meat was definitely on the better end that I've had in the area, and the guac was generous. The flour tortilla was a highlight as well, having that perfect balance of soft and chewy, with the lightest touch of flour denoting how recently it was made. And chipotle salsa! I sampled the full gamut of salsa offerings and that tasty chipotle version will be my go-to from now on. The green wasn't half bad either. I saw quite a few adobada burritos and fish tacos making the rounds of the place, so I might have to give those a shot next time as well.
